I Need a Hero

I need a hero
Here's one I bet you haven't heard before. Should be a challenge for one of you geniuses out there.
My friend had a black MacBook that was dropped and rendered display-less. No video signal at all. He takes it to the Apple Store. The resident genius tells him that repairing it would be cost prohibitive. My friend agrees and buys a new MacBook Pro. During the attempt to move all his files to the new computer, the disabled MacBook's hard drive takes a dump. They got everything off but some photos and my friend was happy.
I've since inherited a one-year-old black MacBook with no display and a dead hard drive. I thought I'd stick a new drive in it, remove the lid/display and hook it up to an external display. Instant desktop!
Here's what I've determined I am going to have to do so far:
1. Install a new hard drive
2. Boot up on the system install discs to install OS X.
If you haven't jumped ahead and figured out my dilemma, here is what I see coming. I will have no way to click my way through the installation without a display. I could go ahead and hook up to the external display but I would need to change the monitor settings to use the external monitor. And since there is no system installed yet, I'm not sure I'll have any Settings to change anyway.
To any of you that made it through this long-winded story, got any ideas?

Hook it up & see.
My G5 PowerMac has dual-monitors, and when you boot it up the initial grey screen appears on both. I've never tried it on a Mac laptop, but you might well find it automatically mirrors the laptop display to a connected external monitor during boot up, if it finds one connected.
If it doesn't work, then come back here worrying about it. I've worked blind a fair bit on Windows, but not on Mac - generally speaking the worst case is to perform exactly the same operations on another machine, work out the keyboard shorcuts and blindly enter them on the computer with the knackered monitor. It's amazing when it works, but also it almost always works!
Windows PCs have great easy-to-use keyboard shortcuts, but Mac OS X can talk (speech synthesis) during installation so that blind people can install it. You sound resourceful - I'm sure you'll be ok.
PS: if you can find a similar model on eBay which has a dead CPU or logic-board (ideal symptoms "it was getting really hot and the fan was on all the time, then it just wouldn't power up") then you may be able to affordably cannibalise it for parts. About the only Macs that are cheap on eBay are dead ones, and reselling the left-over spares can be profitable. That sort of task is quite delicate, though - you have to be very careful during disassembly and reassembly, take it real slow!

    I'm getting tired of dealing with my iPod. After trying 3 different conversion programs, nothing will transfer to my iPod. my iTunes SAYS that it's on there, but it's not there when i look on my ipod.
    seriously. Apple fix your bugs.
    Can anyone help? nothing anyone has said has worked.

    Benjamin, It would be great if you could post on my thread right before this one, because I posted 3 of these and seemed to have confused some people.
    So, view that one, and your help would be much appreciated.

  • IMac needs help

    Ok I have this iMac that was given to me and i turn it on and everything but I don't know the password so I can't use it and I've tried command S and command R they both do not work please someone help me anyone. Please I need a hero.

    Okay, that's great - for best performance, I'd suggest wiping and reinstalling as you'll get a clean fresh copy of the OS and can set it up with your own name/password.
    insert disk 1 and choose Restart from the file menu while holding down the C key. Once booted into the installer, go past the language selection, and then choose Disk Utility in the File menu. Choose to erase your disk. When finished, quit Disk utility and install the OS. Insert disk 2 when asked for it. When it's all finished, hit Software Update in the File menu under the Apple and it'll update whatever is needed.

  • DVI To Video Adapter on XP using Boot Camp

    I bought a DVI To Video Adapter for my MacBook pro. Though is works fine on the Mac OsX, when I tried to use it on Windows XP (using Boot Camp) all I got was a black-flickering image on my TV. Anyone… anything…? Thanx
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I'm having the same problem.
    It's gotta be some driver problem on the XP side.
    I don't know if it's something created by boot camp when it creates drivers for the Mac.
    The help i've found for the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 doesn't describe the options and dialogs I'm working with very accurately.
    Called Apple-- they can't support the issue. Turned me back to searching on my own. Boot Camp message boards/ ATI... bummer.

  • Exporting errors:  the quicktime movie is "squished".

    Hi. I'm exporting in HD and my quicktime movie is (vertically) squished. I appear "fatter" than I really am... but just barely.
    I've tried many settings, but am currently compressing to 1280 x 720.
    (I eventually want to get it to youtube, but for now even the file looks wrong / squished.)
    {in case it matters, I'm using the Kodak Zi6, but I can't imagine that is the prob.)
    Thanks so much in advance. I need a hero

    Hi Tom,
    In a different thread, you adviced for Kodak zi6 users to:
    " Make sure you set the 720p30 preset in FCE before you make a sequence. "
    I feel like an idiot but cannot find that setting in FCE. How do I do that? Thanks.

  • Account existence issues.

    Hello,
    I was hoping you guys could help me.
    After trying to reset my password I was told that "Sorry, we couldn't find an existing Skype account for you." However, I get told that I can't make a new account under this email address as it says it already in use. I can't login to do anything via the site or client, can someone help?
    And yes I'm using 7.1
    I need a hero,

    Hi!
    Since this is a community forum, we really cannot deal with account details (changing pwds, emails and such), we can only advice.
    Your best and most likely fastest bet, is to contact customer service (yes it can be painfull). If you still have access to the registred mail address, can name a few contacts and other things that can connect you to that particular account, you should be able to restore the account (get a pwd reset). this is assuming your account is not compromised (as the other party would have access to the same information).

  • Import edited Photos from iPhone 5s to Mac

    Hello Everyone!
    How can I import several photos from my iPhone 5s (updated to the latest iOS 8.0.2 (12A405)) to my macbook Pro (updated to OS X 10.9.5)?
    I've been searching all over the net, all over support.apple, iPhoto help, iphone help, and I am unable to do this. I found sending email with attachments a very inefficient way, (i've been looking all over for over 4 ridiculous hours). iPhoto would only import originals.
    I also tried iCloud sharing, but besides being a bore, it doesn't save the location when exporting.
    It seems i've once achieved to import edited pictures, after several hours of searching, but now I can't recall how i did it. It -the way i did it that time- created a folder with the event name inside the iphoto library, but now when I try to import with iphoto, it will save only the original file, and save it in some weird named folder, which is inside of another weird named folder and so on. I have to import more than 5gb of photos this time which are already edited on the phone, need a way to do this without making it one by one, and would like to save the location data, since they are from trips in Europe.
    I need a hero! Any help would be kindly appreciated, since i'm running out of ideas, and getting really tired of this (:
    Thanks all!
    Ki

    There is no easy solution, I'm afraid.
    If the shared photo streams are not an option for you, wait with transferring your edited photos for a bug fix.  The current Photos.app in iOS 8.0.2 does not have the option to save a copy of the edited photo to the camera roll, and shared photo streams do no longer transfer the GPS. If you can wait for an iOS 8 update to fix this, wait a bit.
    Dropbox will also transfer the edits, but the GPS is also missing.
    Mailing the photo will remove the GPS.
    You may want to send feedback to Apple with a bug report that edited photos cannot be transferred properly right now. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto_ios.html

  • Error saving psd file to jpg file HELP?

    I have PS version 9.0.2 I can't save psd files to jpg all of the sudden...I live in Escondido, California and had to unplug everything when told to evacuate for the fires. Do I need to reinstall PS or ??? something about dumping preferences, how do I do that?  Need a hero!

    Yes, it's a bug in the mac version of PSE 9. Just opening the Saving Files preference causes pse to stop appending the file extension. You can either enter it manually, or quit the editor, relaunch it while holding down command+shift+option and keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do. Then never go to that particular preference again.

  • Native application creating files

    Hi everybody,
    I need a hero
    I'm working on a Air app calling a native application in C++, so it is not a .app or .cmd it's an executable file. For now it's a "dummy" application like below:
    #include <iostream>
    #include <string>
    #include <fstream>
    using namespace std;
    int main(int argc, char ** argv)
              ofstream myfile;
        myfile.open ("test.txt");
        cout << "Hello "<<  argv[1]<< " its a new world!"<<endl;
        myfile << "Writing this to a file.\n";
        myfile.close();
        return 0;
    I launch this native application thanks to the NativeProcess API :
                file = file.resolvePath("./application/Marlin/mac/hello");
                var nativeProcessStartupInfo:NativeProcessStartupInfo = new NativeProcessStartupInfo();
                nativeProcessStartupInfo.executable = file;
                var processArgs:Vector.<String> = new Vector.<String>();
                processArgs.push("rela");
                nativeProcessStartupInfo.arguments = processArgs;
                process = new NativeProcess();
                process.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.STANDARD_OUTPUT_DATA,onOutputData);
                process.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.STANDARD_ERROR_DATA,errorDataHandler);
                process.start(nativeProcessStartupInfo);
    I can see intthe standart output that my native application is running. I have in the trace : hello rela its a new world!
    First question, the native application doesn't pop up, I mean that the console doesn't show up and execute the C++ code. Is it normal or is there a configuration to change that?
    Seconde question, my native application creates a file but when I launch with the Air app, the file is not created. Is it possible to launch a native application creating a file? Is there any security or confifuration to set up?
    Thanks a lot.

    Nevermind, I've found out.
    Needed to add the working directory.
    nativeProcessStartupInfo.workingDirectory = File.createTempDirectory();

  • "Thumbnail" image need to be the same image as the "Hero Image?"

    When using the slide show widget does the "Thumbnail" image need to be the same image as the "Hero Image?"
    I would like to keep my "Hero Image" I load into the widget, but would like to change its corresponding "Thumbnail" image to a different icon. Is it possible to use live type in MUSE as the icon and put it over the "Hero Image?" Thanks for the help!

    Thank you very much for the help. This works great! As I'm diving in deeper and messing with the Composition Widget I had few more questions...
    I have figure out how to put in a different image into the thumbnail, but how do I replace it with a text box instead of an image. I would like to use websafe fonts as the thumbnail that triggers the Hero picture. Is this possible?
    I attached an quick 3 frame storyboard as reference to show you what I am trying to do.

  • Need help with Go Pro Hero 3 and Premiere Pro CS6

    Hello,
    I recently acquired PP CS6. I put my clip (30 seconds long) and I go to preview while editing, for the first 1.5 seconds it is fine but then it is very choppy. The audio is fine but the video does not play smoothly. When I save and process the video it is fine. It is frustrating to try to edit video this way. I'm sure I'm missing a step when creating the project but I haven't used Premiere Pro since CS6. This is only happening with Go Pro Hero 3 videos, any of my other cameras are fine. Any ideas? Thanks

    There's a lot of confusion over how video encoding affects subsequent editing performance - a higher data rate has no direct relation to how much effort is required to decode and play the footage, in fact a higher data rate often makes playback easier - which is why transcoding to AVI can help with playback even though the files can be hundreds of times larger. Data rates with the same codec depend on the frame contents and recording quality, but for playback and editing what matters is the GOP (group-of-pictures) structure and the complexity of the encoding algorithm. Provided your disks are fast enough the data rate is immaterial to Premiere.
    With long-GOP files (as typically created by consumer DSLRs and helmet cams) we have keyframes (I-frames) with a complete set of pixel data, then a series of intervening P- and B-frames which only store the difference between 'now' and 'one frame before' or 'one frame after'. Unless you're on an I-frame you have to calculate the chain of differences from the nearest I-frame, and when editing or applying an effect we must  re-calculate the entire GOP, so Premiere has to hold a lot of data in the buffer. Remember all timelines in Premiere are internally transcoded to 32-bit floating point, so it's more work to 'play' the footage in the monitors than would be done by a simple playback-only application such as VLC, or in some other brands of NLE that only work in the footage's color space. Premiere's hardware acceleration (MPE) only kicks in once the buffer has been ingested, all the decoding of the original H.264 frames happens in your CPU.
    With digital cinema cameras and some hacked DSLRs, we record "all-I" footage - so there's no GOP overhead and playback/editing is massively smoother. I can scrub all-I footage from a hacked 7D no problem on my relatively-ancient spare laptop, but the  long-GOP files from a factory 7D struggle to play at all. Our all-I 7D footage can hit 300MBit/s compared to 35 for long-GOP. Helmet cams such as the GoPro do all they possibly can to squeeze data onto their storage cards, which means they have long-GOP codecs that have some of the most complicated compression algorithms out there. The Hero3's implementation of H.264 uses the Ambarella chip, whose files are very small but an utter nightmare to decode - hence far more of a demand on your CPU than an equivalent clip from a DSLR.
    Jim Simon wrote:
    Might be the 35 Mbps that is causing the choppy playback.
    It shouldn't, assuming sufficient hardware.  My GH2 clips often get up to over 90 Mb/s and play just fine on an older i7 920.
