I need a new computer and am looking for some direction

I have the CS5 Premium Suite and do not have the 3D capability on my current computer. I am a PC user and was hoping someone would educate me on what desktop computer I should investigate. Thanks for helping out a newbie!

While some might propose building your own, unless you're *really* into computer tech I suggest getting a pre-built system, put together by a reputable company.  For maximum future-proofing, it should be a workstation class machine rather than a regular old computer, and one that comes with a solid warranty.
If I were outfitting a brand new machine for graphics / Photoshop use right now, I'd look at the Dell Precision Workstation line.  These are the only machines I use in my business.
You really haven't said anything about your budget...  These are not inexpensive machines.  But they are rock solid stable, they perform really well (and I'm talking THROUGHPUT), and Dell will come fix the machine if it breaks.
Now, if you are looking to not spend quite so much, you can get a just off cutting edge Dell Precision workstation used, even with a warranty still intact (and which can be extended) for a big savings.  Believe it or not, eBay can be an excellent source of Precision workstations...  I have purchased two this way recently, and I have had nothing but rock solid service from them.
My rule of thumb for pricing a professional, "get real work done" computer is this:  Prepare to spend $1,000 for every year you expect to be able to use this computer.  If you think you'll be buying another machine in 3 years, then you should look at spending $3,000.  Another way to look at it is that if you buy a brand new workstation decked out with all the bells and whistles you might spend $5,000 and that machine will likely be usable (possibly with some minor upgrades, such as adding RAM) for 5 years.

My old computer crashed so I got a new computer and installed Itunes but some songs are grayed out

What actions, if any, did you take to transfer your iTunes Library from your old computer to your new one?  Unless you do so, the only songs that will automatically be available to you are your previous iTunes Store purchases - and even then this is dependent on both where you are (not all regional versions of the Store provide this facility) and whether the songs you've purchased are still available from the Store.
As leofanti points out, iTunes Match is not a backup service for your library.

  • Moved to a new computer, but iTunes looking for songs at old folder locatio

My old pc crashed, so I copied all the songs from my old hard drive to my new machine. Now my iTunes shows 2 versions of each song and 1 version says it can't find the file. Does anyone know an easy way to have iTunes delete all the songs it can't find.

The best way to migrate an iTunes library to a new computer is simply to copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer into the <User's Music> folder of the new one, then install iTunes. It only becomes more complicated if the media folder is split out of its usual place as a subfolder of the iTunes library folder, in which case the media folder needs to be placed on the same path that it had previously or the library needs to be made portable before it is copied across.
If whatever your brother has done leaves the iTunes Media folders looking the same on both machines then copying over the library files and Album Artwork folder from the old iTunes folder to the new one should fix things, otherwise just do the whole process over.

  • New computer and video monitors for HD and PP CS5.5

    Dear All,
I have recently updated to Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection to work in conjuntion with Final Cut Pro.  I've been working with a Canon XL-1s, taping with mini-dv format in Standard Definition up to this time but am thinking of buying the Panasonic AG-AC160 AVCCAM and upgrading to High Definition.
I'm working on a Mac Pro and have been using a View Sonic computer monitor and a Sony Video Monitor that I've had for years -- left over from the old analog video tape days, but it still seems to do the job well.
I'm learning Premiere Pro CS5.5 and the suite seems to be working o.k., so that is not a problem at this time.
My question is:  If I start working in high definition, do I need to change my computer and video monitors in order to get professional results from my editing software?  I have done documentaries and want to do them in high def and have the best video for podcasts and mobile applications.
I don't want to spend another gazillion dollars on monitors if I don't have to, but I do want to provide the best video that I can and I will buy what I need.
Thanks for your suggestions and any info you can provide.

    Dear taz291819
Thanks for your help.  I have one more question.  Do I actually need two monitors or will the computer monitor serve as a video monitor?  I'm used to the old analog process of viewing the final video on a video monitor, but with HD, I would think that the computer monitor would give the same result as a separate video monitor.  My ViewSonic would work, I'm sure, but it's a bit small for the HD format and I would like a bigger screen to work on.  So, can I just use the computer monitor for editing and viewing the final product?
For Harm Millaard, I just think that HD will produce a better final product in small formats viewed as podcasts or on mobile phones -- plus almost everyone wants everything in HD now, and for some of the things I will be doing, it will undoubtedly give a better product.  I want to upgrade my camera anyway, so I want to go to HD.

  • I got a new computer and some of my music apparently wasn't backed up to the external hard drive.  I have some of the music that didn't save on an iphone. How do I move the music from the iPhone into my iTunes library on the computer?

I got a new computer and somehow have lost some of my more recently purchased and or imported music.  I have some of that music on an iphone and some on an ipad.  How do I get the music from those devices into my itunes library without losing everything else?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Do i need a new SWCV and a business system

    Hi Friends
Do i need a new SWCV and Business suystem for every scenario .
Let us say i created one file to iDOC scenario with the same sender and same target system
and now for the same Sender and Reciever i want to create one more scenario which is again a file to idoc
So for this do i have to do all the stuff in SLD again.
    Thanks

No you need not create a new technical and business system. You can use the existing technical and business system defined for the same source and target system. You just need to go to the "Objects" tab in ID and add the business system to your scenario.
As far as technical and business sytem info:
SLD is based on the CIM model ( Common Information model)
this model clasiifies the system in terms of SWC, Product, TS, BS to list down....
TS--> Technical details of the system likeserver name, IP etc....it mostly identifies the system with it's technically ( this gives option to change the TS in future suupose you change the server or its configuration etc)
BS---> represents the BS usuage identity suppose youa re using the SAP r/3 clnt 100 is sued for develoment activity 200 for QA here the R/3 palys the TS system and 100 200 plays int he Business system....for that particular business wht'a the role of this system......
Do award points if you feel your query is answered.
    Thanx

  • My new computer build, good bang for the buck?

I'm just starting out with CS 5.5, need a new computer, and want a solid base for upgrading as I go. I think I'm on the right track but uncertain of the video card.
    Intel 970 six core
Asus Rampage III 1366 X58 ATX
    MSI Lightning GTX 580 3072MB
    Asus PA246Q 24''
    #3 (total 24GB) G. Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB) 24O-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC312800) F3-1280CL9D08GBRL
    #6 Samsung F3 3.0 7200 32MB
Corsair Series Gold 850 WAtt Power Suppy
Antec Kuhlen H20 920 CPU Cooling System
    Logotec 500 corded mouse
Logetec corded slim line back lit
    Lain Li A77F case
I'm uncertain if the GTX 580 3GB video card ($475) is overkill? The other options are GTX 570 2.5 MB ($375) GTX 560 2MB ($225)
I've read all the reviews but there are mostly gamers who have more than one card.
Will the GTX 560 2MB be good enough? It's appealing because of the 2GB and the $225. If this could work for the next year few years then the GTX 580 may be down to $200. I just don't have much experience with video processing, how many layers I'll be using, etc. Or are all of these poor choices because they don't have the copper tubing?
When I upgrade I'll add a RAID card. For now I'll just start with the 6 Samsung and use a few for backups as I go along. Maybe I'll need to order more or another external back up sooner than later. Hope that makes sense. My approach is to get started then upgrade. I don't need to win any bench mark test but want a computer that's reasonably fast, upgradeable, reliable and have a long life.
Oh yeah, I had no idea about the keyboard and mouse so just went with a wired one as it will be on a desktop.
So does this look like a well balanced approach? Does anything look excessive or insufficiant?
Thanks for bearing with me. This forum has been a great resource! Of couse you recognize the parts from other recent builds. I've been doing a lot of reseach and really looking forward to getting this together.
    thanks again!
    John C

Yes, Frederic, some of the parts should look familiar! Your approach was really interesting how you were concerned about cooling and air flow. I actually had ordered most of it, including the MB, kayboard and mouse, last Thursday, then decided to go with the same case instead of the Half X and the CPU cooler, so I'm really glad you posted your system when you did.
Really appreciate the feed back. As far as what codec I'll be using, I suppose the ones that are the most versatile and most often used. I would like it to be capable to handle professional work standards yet not overkill. Do most editors use native and a codec for ACHDV? I was planning on the AVID codec and probably the CinaForm. A week ago I was put off by spending $100 for a codec but now that I'm configuring the hardware that might be a good option. I just don't know how to put all this into perspective until I get a real idea of the work flow; if it will save minutes or hours off the edit time.
I was confused about the disk performance. Thanks a bunch for pointing that out. I must have misunderstood some of the post, as I was under the impression that the SATA II disk 3.0 32 mb exceeded the throughput of the SATA connection, however you are saying that’s not the case with a RAID card, and that the RAID card with a decent disk set up would be best approach to improve the performance as opposed to more VRAM on the video card.
I am planning a good raid configuration in the near future so will get the SATA III. It's nice to be able to upgrade like that. I also want a good RAID card and the RAID will be also for redundancy. I may even have to go with a 10000 RPM primary drive like yours as those appear to be a nice boost. I planned to start off with 4 disk set up with a few disk for backups and ordered 6 disk. I was going to look into that next and didn't even realize the SATA III was on the MB. I'll probably be shooting a lot just to learn how to process the video, and once I start processing quality video I'll upgrade the RAID and backup.
Ok, off to see if I can cancel the Samsung order, gotta love Amazon for that.
Have a great day and thanks again!

Try reindexing the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
    Reindex messages.
If that doesn't work try deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.
    Quit the application.
You need to look in your user Library. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.  Move the file to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the file from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return thefile to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.
