I need a new computer

Ok i have a really crappy computer and i new a new one for between 800 - 900$. All i want is a reliable computer with the ablity to run the internet FAST.  Good grafics card with a Blu - Ray player.

Do you just need the tower, or a new LCD monitor as well?

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

You need to upgrade OS X.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Yes although you may want to check the remainder of the system requirements at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/tech-specs.html.

  • I own a powerpc G5 2.1ghz PPC and have itunes 9.2.1. Netflix through my Apple TV streams only Vol 2 of MI-5, even though 9 volumes exist. any solutions? or do i need a new computer meeting apple tv tech requirements?

do i need a new computer, or is there a work around

I don't think that is completely correct, Allan. Netflix streaming doesn't have anythign to do with your computer hardware. Yes, if you want to stream content from iTunes it must meet the hardware specs, but the OP isn't talking about that.
To the OP, scroll up to the top of the episode list and select the "other seasons in this series" option. Then you'll be able to see the other 8 volumes.

  • I need a new computer.  What do you think of the new Lion?

I need a new computer.  Should I go for the new LION?  21" ? I have had a Dell?

My guess is WZZZ and I don't agree on Lion. IMHO it's stable and a great OS. While it does have Launchpad as a feature which is very iPad like, Launchpad does not need to be used. I've been using Lion since it's inception and have found it to be simply the next evolution of OS X having migrated from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and now Lion.
If you need a new computer any new iMac would be a fine choice, which one is right for you would depend on how you intend to use the computer. WZZZ is spot on on the refurbs too, some 2010 models may still be available and some do come with Snow Leopard on it which you can update to Lion if you want. That update would be free as part of Apple's Lion - Up-to-date program.
Transitioning to OS X is pretty easy however to make that transition easier you may find these bookmarks useful.

At the moment I have an Acer Aspire - it's 3 years old and I am running Windows 7 it's a 64 bit machine.   I use photoshop with many layers to produce  - I also use Paint Shop Pro  I don't use it for photography but mainly for many layered taggins, email, animations etc.  Uploading my siggie tags to Photobucket and Fotki also the usual general stuff MS office, Word, Excel, One Note.     My husband has an old Acer which is so slow - it has less than 1gb RAM and it's still running on Vista     My thoughts were if we are going to replace his I may as well get one that will fulfill my needs too should my machine go down.   I am a mod in a couple of taggers forums and have to be able to produce things    Forgot to say I use all photoshop 2014 CC including 3D.   My budget is about £350 tops - I am in UK
My present machine spec is this
Acer Aspire X5400   AMD Athlon II X4   3 GHZ Processor   RAM 4 GB    64 bit o/s with NVidia Geforce
    Video Card Vendor:    NVIDIA Corporation
    Renderer:             GeForce 315/PCIe/SSE2
    OpenGL Version:       3.3.0
    GLU Version:          1.2.2.0 Microsoft Corporation

  • I need a new computer but not sure what to get, im on a budget

This may sound dorky and a little nerdy but, It is time that I buy a new computer.  It has been such a long time since I have bought one, and even then I didnt make the purchase my ex-wife did.  The deal is this....I am a major World of Warcraft geek.  So one would expect that I know what kinda computer I should buy.  Not the case.  I need to know what I should look for when I am purchasing a computer strictly for the purpose of playing World of Warcraft.  I dont have a ton of money to spend and I am going to get the computer from Best Buy because, well frankly, I have a lot of gift certificates for there.  So in short I need a solid computer for gaming, have a limited budget and I dont care if its a desktop or laptop, all though I would prefer a desktop.  Please if you have any advice to offer I would appreciate it very much.

You have bigger problems then looking for a good computer.  A Destruction Warlock at lvl 70.  /shakes head.  LOL, just kidding.  I would recommend going Affliction or Demonology until you hit lvl 80 unless you are leveling strictly through the Random Dungeon tool.  Although even with randoms, Affliction is still completely capable of outperforming Destro locks until the early to mid gear levels of level 80 toons.  Plus, as Affliction your mana is almost endless and there is virtually no downtime to drink and eat between mob pulls while questing.  Two words:  Drain-tank.  Plus its.........wait a minute......we're on a Best Buy site.  Hmmm....got a little bit carried away.
For a computer system, you don't really need an awesome graphics card to run WoW.  Although with Cataclysm I believe the system requirements will be raised a bit with the ability to fly through Azeroth.  I was actually with a customer today looking for a computer to play Flight Sim on and we found a great ASUS desktop for $499.  4 gigs of ram, with a great graphics card 1.74 Gigs of shared memory.
I, like others on here, would recommend you purchasing a desktop for computer gaming.  As games grow, their requirements grow larger and desktops give you the best option for a system that you can upgrade.
I hope this helps........and at least try out my suggestion about re-speccing to Affliction.  Just remember not to Clip your DoTs.  Warlocks are OP.

  • HP Director software needed for new computer with windows 8

I have a Deskjet 5510 and went from Windows XP to a new computer with Windows 8 (64 bit).  The driver installed when I plugged the printer in, but I haven't been able to find HP Director to install.   I tried to do an install from the website, but it just told me that the driver was already installed correctly.  The Director is a pretty important piece of the printer, can I get it back?

Hi, due to the age of the printer HP does not support 5510 in Win8.

  • I need a new computer and am looking for some direction

I have the CS5 Premium Suite and do not have the 3D capability on my current computer. I am a PC user and was hoping someone would educate me on what desktop computer I should investigate. Thanks for helping out a newbie!

While some might propose building your own, unless you're *really* into computer tech I suggest getting a pre-built system, put together by a reputable company.  For maximum future-proofing, it should be a workstation class machine rather than a regular old computer, and one that comes with a solid warranty.
If I were outfitting a brand new machine for graphics / Photoshop use right now, I'd look at the Dell Precision Workstation line.  These are the only machines I use in my business.
You really haven't said anything about your budget...  These are not inexpensive machines.  But they are rock solid stable, they perform really well (and I'm talking THROUGHPUT), and Dell will come fix the machine if it breaks.
Now, if you are looking to not spend quite so much, you can get a just off cutting edge Dell Precision workstation used, even with a warranty still intact (and which can be extended) for a big savings.  Believe it or not, eBay can be an excellent source of Precision workstations...  I have purchased two this way recently, and I have had nothing but rock solid service from them.
My rule of thumb for pricing a professional, "get real work done" computer is this:  Prepare to spend $1,000 for every year you expect to be able to use this computer.  If you think you'll be buying another machine in 3 years, then you should look at spending $3,000.  Another way to look at it is that if you buy a brand new workstation decked out with all the bells and whistles you might spend $5,000 and that machine will likely be usable (possibly with some minor upgrades, such as adding RAM) for 5 years.

  • IDVD 06 - need a new computer to install???

I have a G4 superdrive desktop. reading the instructions for iLife 06 and apparently i can't install iDVD w/out having an Intel Core processor. is this correct? so i can keep using iDVD 05?
    Steve

Not sure where you read that but it is not correct. You can use iDVD 6 with a G4 or G5 as well as an Intel based Mac. However, on my Quad G5 I found iDVD 6 takes -twice- as long to encode the same project as iDVD 5 so I went back to iDVD 5 (and iMovie HD 5). You may not experience a 2:1 slow-down but be prepared for much slower encoding in iDVD 6 if you install it.

  • Need help installing PC DIO 96 in new computer

    Hello:
I am currently running a PC DIO-96 on a 100 MHz pentium (Windows 95) and LabWindows CVI. The board controls high voltage power supplies and timing equipment for a mass spectrometer. The computer is on its last leg, and I need a new computer for this instrument. However, I did not develop the code that controls this instrument, and I would ideally like to plug this board into a new computer system, copy over the .c, .h, etc. files, and continue using this code.
The questions I have are... is LabWindows CVI compatible with the OS I would get with a new computer, e.g. Windows 2k or XP? Also, is this board compatible with those systems? Are there specific system requirements I need to purchase to utilize the
board, or can I expect to just plug it in to any new computer? If I can't use board, is there a newer one I should purchase that I can use with the existing code that has been written for the instrument?
Forgive the newbie questions, but this will be my first foray into the realm of computer hardware.

    Justin;
You will need to check the version of the CVI you are using and choose a version of the DAQ board driver NI-DAQ to compatible with both that version of CVI and the OS you choose to use.
Please be more specific about the versions you are using now so I can give you a better help.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need help buying a new computer

Ok so I desperately need a new computer. my current one is 6 years old and is dying on me. What I'm looking for is something that will be able to run games like Knights of the Old Republic, The Sims 2, and eventually Star Wars: The Old Republic once it is released next spring. I don't want something that would be overkill for these games, but enough so that they don't lag and don't look awful. And I'm fine with buying a graphics card separately if it would be cheaper then buying some epic pc. My price range is $800-$1100, preferably $800 ^^; $1100 is like last resort no other option.
so any help would be greatly appreciated
On a side-note, my current pc until recently could play the above games fine, so I know I don't need some epic gaming computer to play them, but I just need help with which companies are reliable and what will be able to handle something like swtor's graphics in the near future.

Hey! You don't need a powerhouse, but as long as you have such a nice budget, you might as well get something nice. This is my personal recommendation based on specs, hardware and branding. Also, the case doesn't try to be 'too cool', it's a standard, functional case with a little better construction. No video upgrade needed. (This is tower only, if you need a monitor, that's a whole different cup of tea).
