I need a new drive controller

I have a couple of 120's [IDE] that I want to set up as a Raid 0 and use as startup.
On my G4 AGP will I see any difference between a 66mhz controller card and a 133 controller card?
Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) Quad 2500   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 GB Ram, Nvidia FX5500 agp card

The "ATA-66" and "ATA-133" speed rating is in megabytes per second, not MHz.
If I am not mistaken, a 33MHz, 64-bit slot has a bandwidth of 264MB per second (64 bits, or 8 bytes, x 33MHz).
Most hard drives can only transfer around 45MB per second, in spite of their speed rating (the drive's electronic parts can handle more data per second than the mechanical parts can send). You only get higher transfer speeds in short bursts.

  • I need a new drive for my G4 Mac mini - where to start??

    Hello all,
I have a approximately 4-5 year old 1.5GHz Power PC G4 Mac mini with 1 GB DDR SDRAM memory and an 80 GB hard drive. I was having issues with it running slow, not being able to access different files/applications, etc. so I ran Disk Warrior on it and received the warning that it was not able to replace the directory and that I should save all files from the Preview directory (which I have been able to do).
I took the mini to my local Genius Bar and was told that the most likely problem was a failing drive. Unfortunate as that is, I am happy I was able to make back-ups of all important files on it, and have resigned myself to making the necessary repairs to get it running again.
As I have yet to ever run across this type of problem (replacing a drive to a computer) I obviosuly have a few questions to that end. As some of them may be buried in threads that might be hard to find, I was wondering if folks out there would have the answers to a few simple questions I had regarding this upcoming task.
First, would this be a failing optical drive or hard drive from the way I've described the problem? I seem to be able to get the mini "running", that is able to copy files, etc. if I first run Disk Warrior on it and ten restart - but it is still unable to open things such as Safari or iTunes.
Second, what are the best options for replacement in terms of price/speed/memory? I would love to have the newer intel processor in it, but don't even know if this is something that would be replaced with a new drive (shows how much I know! :^) I don't need as much hard drive space since external drives are fairly cheap - my main focus would be a faster processor and RAM.
Is this something a pretty capable person should attempt to replace themselves, or is going to Best Buy or something along those lines a better choice for the security of not messing the mini itself up? I feel fairly comfortable doing it if it is possible, I would just hate to fry the entire computer if it is a really tricky process.
Thanks in advance for whomever replies to this rather "wordy" question. I think forums like this are one of the best ways to learn and get answers on electronic questions!
    Cheers,
    Kev

would this be a failing optical drive or hard drive from the way I've described the problem?
Hard drive. DW and other such utilities don't even work on optical drives, and an optical drive problem would not cause boot problems and the other symptoms that you describe. But before you replace the drive, I'd suggest you try reformatting the drive ("erasing" in the terminology used in Disk Utility) and reinstalling Mac OS X. That may fix the problem. If not, then you can look into replacing the drive.
Second, what are the best options for replacement in terms of price/speed/memory?
You can find options here, among other places:
I would love to have the newer intel processor in it, but don't even know if this is something that would be replaced with a new drive (shows how much I know! :^) I don't need as much hard drive space since external drives are fairly cheap - my main focus would be a faster processor and RAM.
Sorry, but replacing the processor can't be done. If you want a faster processor, you'll have to purchase a newer mini.
Is this something a pretty capable person should attempt to replace themselves, or is going to Best Buy or something along those lines a better choice for the security of not messing the mini itself up?
Avoid Best Buy like the plague. They're far more likely to cause problems for your mini than you would be doing it yourself. There are a number of sites on the web that have instructions. Here's one:
    http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm
OWC/MacSales has video instructions as well:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/
It is a bit tricky - lots of disassembly - but it's not beyond a reasonably dexterous user.
    Regards.

  • My MacBook Pro is spitting out my DVDs. I tried many discs and they all got spat out. Its an early 2008. The drive is a HL-DT-ST dvdrw GSA-s10n. Do I need a new drive?

Hi.  Need some help here.  My MacBook Pro is spitting out my DVDs.  I insert them and they knock around awhile making whirring noises, then out they come.  Refuses to play them.  I've tried many.  I have an early 2008 model and the drive is a HL-DT-ST dvdrw GSA-s10n.  Do I need to get a new drive?  Thanks for any help or comments.

My old Early 2008 MBP used to do that every now and then in the last years of its life. Got a dry-type optical drive cleaner, the kind that is a CD with 4 rows of very fine and soft bristles glued on the "business side". Memorex was the brand I got, good for 20-30 uses.  Ran it thru every time the drive acted up, never failed to restore functionality.
Of course, the Mac would later go on and blow its logic board. And that was that.

  • T400 SSD Upgrade Question Do I need a new drive caddy? My machine shipped with a 1.8" drive.

I'm planning on upgrading to a larger SSD in my T400. It originally shipped with a 1.8" 64GB Samsung SSD and I'm probably going to upgrade it to a 2.5" 7mm Samsung 840 (non-pro) SSD.
I'm not sure if the current caddy in the T400 is going to fit the new SSD, or if I'll need to purchase the 2.5" caddy. If so, does anyone know the FRU # of the caddy I'll need?

  • Need a new drive

    Hi all,
I've decided to upgrade both my G5s with new DVD RW drives. I have a history in building PCs and upgrading macs so I guess I can do this.
    They are Dual 1.8Ghz G5s. Model 7,2.
Anyways, have a quick search it seems that pioneer and sony drives are the users favourites when it comes to upgrading. But which model? Is there one that has been reliable as there's also a lot of posts about upgraded DVD drives not working after a day or week.
Whats the best model at the moment?
    Many thanks,

    Sam Hayder-
Of course you can do it.
    Check out this site: http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
The xlr8yourmac site is very helpful, and searching the drive database will allow you to both find a proper replacement and see what others have to say about their experiences in doing so.

  • With Mac Pro I´ll need da new controller?

Power Mac Quad with WD Raptors is a problem. The internal controller not work correctly with Driver. The Solution is a PCI-E controller.
I´m a owner PM Quad and I know how the disks take-me a lot of time. My primer use is running a chemistry soft called Gamess of Ameslab. I can´t use the power of 4 processor because the 4 process fight for bus of disk.
I search a lot of a really good controller of my quad and found the ARECA ARC-1210. Is a 8x PCI-E controller with 128MB ECC (buffer) for 4 disks SATA II. http://www.areca.com.tw/products/html/pciE-sata.htm
I´m waiting for make a test. Newegg not delivery my box. Brazzilian Gov is try take my money.. ***..
I read some bech´s and i believe that with this controller and 4 disks will take 300MB/s.. Much better the 60MB of my 250GB Default Disk.
PS. Areca controller has a driver not bootable for MACOS
So.. I think buy a new Mac Pro.. Better because fortran compiler of Intel give-me a license for educational use.. Much different of IBM with yours compilers XL..
I have some problems with XLF and appreciate some help. [email protected]
I´ll need buy a new Areca controller for Mac Pro?
Is sure that is a increment in performance because is a Hardware RAID controller with 128MB os buffer. Much better that internal controller..
My primer question is how much better??

  • Do I need a new hard drive & can I use Leopard?

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.5Ghz with OS X 10.3.9 on the original 80GB hard drive, I've been getting a lot of problems with the computer acting very slowly and getting 'hung up' with the color wheel spinning endlessly, during which nothing responds, I can't force quit, the only thing I can do is force a shut by holding down the power key. Sometimes it takes a long time to start up. I've tried re-installing the OS but still the same problems. I ran the Apple Hardware Test which gave this error code "2STF/4/3:ATA-100 ata-6-MASTER".
Does this all mean that my hard drive is going down and I need a new one?
Can I use any size hard drive e.g. a 250GB one?
Also - If I put a new hard drive in can I then install Leopard?
All info received with many thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That code means there are problems with your hard drive. If you look at Disk utility (on your hard disk in applications/utilities) you may see that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows a problem. Or if you have SMARTreporter installed, it may not be green.
You can certainly use up to a 160GB hard drive. There was a discussion recently suggesting a BIOS (basic input output services) limit to 160GB ... I don't know if that's real or not.
If you do replace your hard drive, you might consider the slight price premium for a 7200rpm drive. You'll appreciate the extra snapiness in response time. And yes, you can install Leopard on it. After installing the new hard drive, boot from the DVD drive and use disk utility to format the hard drive in mac os extended (journaled) format. Then you can install Leopard.
