Hi guys,
just want to get opions about pci video capture cards out there that can be used on a MDD running either 9.2.2 or X Tiger.
I basically need to transfer old analog Hi8 video to DV format. and the default card doesn't have video in/out.
I don't might purchasing software that may be required... either old or new, or if iMovie is enough just tell me if it is required to support the HD.

I assisted a wedding videographer who spent seventeen thousand dollars on an elaborate capture and editing system based on NuBus cards for 8100 PPCs and the company never got it to work properly without constant crashing. I am sure that Avid has gone on to produce some quality equipment based on lessons learned in the 1990s but that 8100 generation of cards was worthless.
I am interested in doing the same thing you are looking for so I will post back with what I find. Just avoid being the guinea pig for some company who does not have the details worked out.

PCI Video Capture Cards for PowerPC?

Hi, I have a few PowerPC macs and I want to record some videogame game play via svideo (composite if svideo isn't an option) on them via a PCI capture card. Can anyone give me a few recommendations for cards to purchase? I do not want a USB or Firewire capture device, and it needs to be real time because I would be playing it through my monitor as it records. Preferably OS9 AND OSX compatible, though either or is perfectly fine. I don't care what format it records in or the compression, as I can deal with that later. Thanks.

Satellite R630 - need internal camera video capture software

Help!!
I have a Toshiba Satellite R630 laptop with skype installed.
The video side of skype works perfectly well but i can't seem to find any software on my laptop that enables me outside of skype to make and capture video recordings using the built in camcorder in the laptop.
What do I need to do to be able to do this?

As far as I know you should find the software in All Programs -> Toshiba
If its not installed, you can download this from the Toshiba European driver page.
After the installation, the webcam tool control bar should be available in the upper are of the display. Its slides in and out in order to use it
The webcam tool control bar can be moved to different areas (left right bottom upper area)

Streaming from composite video capture

I need a USB video capture device that accepts an NTSC color 480i composite signal and presents itself as a video input device that works with QuickTime (or iChat, EvoCam, etc). That last point is important: it can't depend on its own application software (except the drivers, of course) to do the recording. It must appear to the system as a video input like a camera.
Most Mac compatible capture devices I have looked at do not make this easy to figure out, and so far the few devices I have found require their own software to do the entire capture process. Does anybody have any experience or recommendations?

A DV Converter that is Firewire to the computer is going to be preferable for iChat.
iChat can accept USB 1.1 input from a device with driver.
We tend to be talking USB 1.1 web cams here as many Converters don't do Drivers for USB in a form iChat can "See"
iChat can accept USB 2.0 UVC complaint Camera input as the Driver has been there since 10.4.9 (and working with iChat).
Again you don't tend to get Converters or Camcorders with UVC Compliant software - only web cams.
I have a Hollywood Dazzle but unfortunately it no longer is fully functional. (it works only as a Firewire Hub at present)
Pinnacle bought out Dazzle but do not support the older products and don't make anything Firewire capable themselves.
The Hollywood Dazzle had two Firewire ports and could in fact allow a camera connect by RCA connectors to be outputted to two computers.
It could also of course take Firewire from the computer back out over the RCA ones to a TV so you could see what iMovie was producing.
iChat will accept Firewire.
That means the Original External iSight (there were three models but only mounts really changed)
Firewire CamCorders - and as has been mentioned some will act as Analogue to DV converters
There were more Firewire Web cams at one stage but only the Fire-i seems to have survived.
If I was looking to buy another converter then a Canopus would be my choice. (Preferably something that could replicate what the Dazzle would do).

On Linux I have a Pci video capture card width 4 channel but jmfinit has detected only one channel. ZoneMinder use both for channel How can I do in order to obtain for channel width JMF?
My Pci card is Grandtech X Guard.

And the way I read that is you want video input (keyword you used was "capture"). Is that what you really want? If so adapters you are looking at is for video output, i.e., to send video from your computer to a display device (e.g., a TV or monitor). If you really want to video input (into your computer) then a simple cable isn't going to work. You need a pci card that handles such functionality.

Need video capture with overlay

I am looking for a video capture card or camera that I can use to capture video of a sample under test. Labview would be controlling the test and I would need to have the test parameters displayed as a text overlay on the captured video in real time.
What sort of capture device can I start/stop with Labview and also insert a text overlay as frames are captured? I would also prefer the frames to be built into some standard video format like AVI as they are captured.
I don't need to do any "vision" processing on the video. I just want to capture and save. I would like to capture using a firewire megapixel camera for higher resolution if possible.

From what I understand, you are looking for these hardware and software
capabilities:
- Use FireWire camera and/or framegrabber card
- Insert text overlay
- Create AVIs
If you would like to do image acquisition with a FireWire camera in LabVIEW, you
will need to use the NI-IMAQ for IEEE 1394 driver that comes bundled in the Vision Acquisition
Software. You can either plug the camera in directly to a computer
with a built-in FireWire port or use the PCI-8252 FireWire interface device
(which comes with the NI-IMAQ for IEEE 1394 driver). For information on
other framegrabber card options (for non-FireWire cameras), please see the NI Vision Hardware website.
The functions for creating AVIs are included in the Vision Acquisition
Software. The text overlays, however, are functions only found in our
image processing software, the Vision

Getting ready for a video capture project, need some guidance

Hi, I'm getting ready to hold an xbox LAN tournament and I would like to capture the game to my computer so I can give people DVDs of it afterwards. The G5 i my first tower and I've had no experience in PCI cards and capturing A/V and all that jazz.
Basically I'm going to be having an input of component cables (though its only going to be 480p, no HD) and possibly optical audio, though more likely analog because I'm going to try to borrow a mixer and run everyone's headsets into the G5.
What am I going to need as far as a video capture card? Will it work in the PCI-X slot or am I going to have to swap it with my 9650 XT?
Also, I'm guessing I'm going to have to buy final cut express to do the software capturing (Seriously, if you couldn't tell already, I really have no idea what I'm doing )
I'm willing to buy the hardware and software required and get some books to figure out the process, but if anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

I use a Canopus DV converter to capture analog video/audio to my computer. I've got the ADVC-100 which has been updated to ADVC-110 and costs about $250. It connects via firewire and works like a charm. I capture using iMovie HD which more than meets my needs for now. I burn dvd's using iDVD which also meets my current needs. My setup is audio-video source, usually a vcr, to the ADVC-100, to the G5 via firewire. Make sure you've got plenty of dick space available to capture. I use aa 320 gb external SATA RAID set. It's really an easy setup and capturing and buring using Apple's software is a snap. Not a steep learning curve. I would suggest if your going to use more advanced software to get a few projects under your belt before the tournament, if you're going to use the iApps you'll find them much easier to learn and will be up and running sooner.

Need Video Capture Card and DVD Burner Quick!

Here's my situation. I've created some movie titles in iMovie and have no way to get them from my Macintosh to my DVD/VCR to incorporate them in a tape I'm making. I need it like NOW as a lot of people are waiting for copies of the tape!
For some time I've wanted a device called a video capture card. It has the ability to play videos on your computer and you can print out images from them. What I want to do is make DVDs of my VHS home movies. I did learn you can't just walk into any local store and buy such a device; it must be ordered.
Desperation is a great motivator and finally (duh) I decided to look at a site specializing in Macintosh products, instead of studying every capture card online. Surprisingly, they offer three models: one cheap ($50-some), one at twice the price of the first, and a third at ten times the price of the second! That's quite a jump! So, as I understand this, I somehow connect this device to my computer (Power Mac G4), hook a VCR to it, and then I can play videotapes on my computer. If I'm in a desperate hurry to burn DVDs I suppose my friend's DVD player will also connect to this device, or am I wrong in this?
Even if I am right (that a DVD player/burner will connect to this) I still don't see how that gives ME a DVD burner with which to transfer my videos to DVD! My combo player will make videos from DVDs but not the other way around! So do I have to run out and buy a DVD burner, and should it be any special kind since it will be used with a device connected to a Macintosh? I need this ASAP so thanks for any advice, or clarification to my understanding of how this process works!

Lennart's links are very good and informative. But one thing you should know is that an external DVD burner will not play a DVD - it only burns them. Since you want to view the DVD and pause at a particular scene and print it, you'll need some way to view your DVD. You also need a way to convert the iMovie project with the imported VHS footage, to a burnable format. iDVD can do that, but I noticed you have OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). If you don't have iDVD you'll need to buy it from the Apple store.

You also need a media player so you can view your final DVD. I did some quick research and found out that none of the free media players allows you to print - which is what you want to do. There are quite a few free media players available, like Nice player and Xine Player, but you need Panther or higher to use them. Because you're running OS X 10.2, the only free media player that you can use is VLC media player. To download a free VLC player go to: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ You do need QT 6.5.2. or higher. So you may need to update your QT.
You can't print a paused image, but you can take a snap shot of the still image, then print that. Snap Shot=CommandShift4. This will allow you to select the paused picture in the screen, or if you like just a portion of that paused picture. It will save on your desktop as a picture. Double click on the Picture, then print that.
Then it sounds like after you've burned the DVD with your titles, you will need to connect a VHS recorder to a DVD player and record your DVD on to VHS tape.

Are they VHS video cassettes or something like 8MM camcorder tapes?
If they're camcorder tapes, usually it's best to try to buy an old video camera (MUST have FIREWIRE port).
Then you can play the tape in the camera and capture from the Firewire. Also important, if you have a 2010 (maybe 2009?) or newer iMac, you'll need a cable that is Firewire 400 to fit the camera at one end and Firewire 800 at the other end to connect to the iMac.
