  • Do I even need an analog to digital converter for old VHS?

I'm just trying the most cost effective way to transfer all of my old VHS & HI-8 material to a digital format for better preservation. Since, why I do not know, PE doesnt allow for analog capture, I need a converter like Dazzle to get my analog source to digital. Or do I?? Can I not just use Windows Movie Maker to capture then import into PE?  Doesnt my capture card do convert?? I have my VCR hooked up via S-video to the card. Is the card not the same thing as an external converter? I just want to know the best way so I dont waste my time only to have to go back and redo everything. Thanx yall

Thanx y'all. Thats where I'm a bit confused. You mentioned "quality DV-AVI". I'm under the assumption that when I capture an analog signal that I set at 720x480 is a "quality DV-AVI". After I have captured and rendered to an .avi file I then import that into PE. Is that what you are meaning? Or is that an inferior quality video file? The capture card I have is a Legacy capture card that came with Pinnacle Studio ver 9. Pinnacle is a great intro level editor, but it sucks because it's slow, unstable and captures out of sync audio which I have to go in and manually sync. I shouldnt have to do that. I'll spend $100-$200 if thats what I have to do to get the results I want. I'm not looking for HD quality here. I simply want to capture all my old analog media, edit it, and burn to DVD and keep on my HD to preserve it all. I want it to be the same quality as it appears on its original medium.I also want to continue to edit and burn stuff using my Mini DV camera as well. I just want an editor thats above intro level, but not as complex as Premieire Pro. I feel that PE will do the job well. My capture card has S-video, firewire & composite inputs. Is my card not what I'm needing??  Or, do I need an analog to digital converter to get the analog material into a raw digital format thats the same quality as the original?
To help in my endeavors i recently upgraded and built anew PC so that I would have no problems, seeing that video editing does tax a computers resources. My new build is a Quad core 4 gb of RAM system. So my computer power should not be an issue for home editing and what not.

  • Premiere Pro 1.5: Best analog to digital converter for BNC?

Recently I've been looking for an external analog to digital converter (that connects via firewire)that will work with Premiere Pro 1.5 for capturing uncompressed digital video from any source, whether it be BNC composite from a U-Matic to S-VHS via S-Video (either DIN or Y/C BNC) to Betacam SP BNC Component.  It would also be nice if it could import digital sources (i.e. DVCPRO 50/Digital Betacam) as well by SDI.
I've looked at a few by AJA or Blackmagic, but I'm not sure if they would work with Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows XP SP3.
Does anyone know of a good converter?

I have NO IDEA if it will work with everything you list, but do some reading at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters

  • How do you "import" AVCHD 60P from Canon camcorder so it can be "converted" for iMovie?

Low-tech guy here.  I don't know video formats and I don't edit video often.  I used my new Canon VIXIA HF R400 camcorder to record high-quality video (AVCHD 60P) not realizing when I connected my camera to my MacBook Pro the video does not even appear for import onto the computer.  I realize I have to convert the format to one iPhoto and iMovie will recognize, but my question is how do I even get my computer to see the video on my camera so I can drag it into a converter software?  I see several chats about how to convert, which assumes the software can see the video on the camera - my problem is I can't even get my computer to see the video so I can then import and covert it.  I've tried Bigasoft AVCHD converter software and the AVCHD Converter by iFunia, but neither software sees the video.  (The Bigasoft doesn't even recognize my camcorder.  iFunia recognizes the camera but doesn't see the video clips.)

Thank you for trying to help me.  I may just be hopeless.  As I mentioned I don't know my video formats (though I've tried to learn now).  I just upgraded to Maverics (thank you!) and was pleased to see that now iMovie recognizes my Canon camcorder, but it does not "see" my individual video clips.  The thumbnails are just blank and I'm not able to check mark any of them (see image).  Maybe the format is just too high-quality for iMovie?  It's AVCHD 60P (or 1080p?)  I don't know what the difference is between the two.  iMovie used to be so simple I didn't need to know that.  I just wanted to put together a simple movie quickly.  I'll have to let go of the dream and let go of iMovie!  LOL  Again, thanks for trying to help!

  • Trouble using Canopus to convert analog videos to digital for iMovie

I am trying to convert my old Sony HandyCam Video 8 analog videos so that I can edit them on iMovie and burn them on a disc. I have connected it as described in the directions but although my computer recognizes the device, I just get the blue import screen and no picture or sound. I have pressed play on the camera and video is running there but does not appear on the screen. Any idea what I am doing wrong? It is connected with the 6pin firewire that came with it to the computer and the DV out plug... and on the other side it is connected with the two plugs I use with the camera...Video IN and Audio IN... and Video OUT and Audio OUT on the camera. The camera is in the player mode with power on. And my computer is a new MacBook Pro with iMovie 08.
    Really need help. Thanks

    K.C.S.
I am having the same problem ADVC-55 to MacBook Pro and iMovie 8. I was able to convert two full VHS tapes but when I started the third, no go. Red status light and nothing I have tried will get it to green. I tried myVCR and iMovie 7, also no go.

  • Canon Camcorder in EP mode convert for iMovie via Quicktime Pro?

Good day everyone. I have a project to do and need to capture some video from a Canon camcorder that recorded the video in EP mode. Unfortunately, I did not know that iMovie cannot work with EP video, only SP and LP. Can Quicktime Pro capture such EP videos and convert it to a format iMovie can work with? I am connecting the camcorder via Firewire just as an FYI. Thanks for any help/advice.

Assuming EP is equally fraught with problems with Quicktime (and I'd suspect it may be), if you can get another video camera temporarily do this - output the first camera using the analog audio and video cable to the AV inputs of a second camera, and then connect that (2nd) camera to iMovie and capture (so to speak) through the 2nd from the first.
    So - Camera 1 ---A/V out---A/V in --Camera 2---Firewire out----Computer
This is called A/V passthrough and works with VHS tapes and the like and since EP must be pretty low quality I doubt it will suffer much more with one pass this way.
Or a device like an Elgato EYE TV will allow you to connect the analog A/V out to its inputs and record for subsequent use in iLife.

  • Need to build a central TOC for ~75 html help files

I'm using RH8 for HTML.  A year ago, I took our 75 Winhelp projects and converted them to 75 HTML projects in order to be compatible with Windows 7.  in Winhelp, the user selects Help and gets a central TOC from which to select the help for the individual project they want.  Now that we want to install the HTML, we need something similar.  we are not set up to have context sensitive help (it's not a browser interface).  How do I create a TOC as a separate HTML project from which all of the other projects can be called?

Best practices? That's all a ToC really is at heart anyway - a bunch of hyperlinks ;>)
You could build yourself a nice big parent/child merged projects scenario if you want the pain...

  • I need a variety of good music for Imovie - any suggestions?

    Hello,
I am creating a DVD for my friends but I am struggling with finding fun, great movie music that I haven't already used. Does anyone know of a website or songs that work well for movies?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

.. songs that work well for movies?..
    Slipknot/OMS Freddie vs Jason (skatermovie...?)
Sinatra/My Lady (portrait of a charming woman.. ?)
    Albinoni/Adagio for Strings&Organ (funeral of a friend... ?)
Scott Joplin/ any rag (Keystone Cops chase - alike ... ?)
... music is THE source of emotion in any project.. so, without knowing the 'tone' of your movies, it is hard to give any recommendations ...

  • File conversion for imovie? help!

hello i just got my new mac 3 days ago and i'm already frustrated and losing my mind!
i plugged in my digital camera hoping to edit some video clips i've been shooting. the pictures load fine in iphoto, and i even watched the video clips with quicktime, but imovie does not recognize the files! thus, i can't load them on there nor edit them. this stinks! unless i convert the files then imovie 08 is useless to me. the file shows up as .mov but stil don't work. i've spent the last 3 hours searching for free file convertors, and all of them are a bust. can anyone help me? any recommendations on a good program to change my .mov to mp4 ?
i'm beyond frustrated right now... really, i never thought apple would be this stubborn! i see i have the option of converting picture files (from .bmp to .jpeg) but there is no such option for video files.
    please help!

You don't want to convert more than once.
QT Kirk is correct here. Your goal should be to not convert the video at all if you don't have to and only once if you must to get it into the editor. iMovie '06 will automatically convert the original clips in iPhoto as part of the "import" process as long as the files are "conversion" compatible with QT and any components you may have installed. iMovie '08, on the other hand, does not perform any conversions as part of a "Finder" level file import. Therefore, if you wish to import to iMovie '08, you will have to do some manual conversion. However, what actually has to be converted may simply depend on the content of the source file.
    1) An MPEG (MPEG-1) or MPEG (MPEG-2) "muxed" file would have to convert both audio and video content to make it compatible with iMovie '08.
    2) A Casio AVI, Kodak MOV, or other digital files containing M-JPEG, MPEG-4, H.264 video with DVI ADPCM or µ-Law audio compression would only have to have its audio content converted. In the case of MPEG-4 and H.264 files, this can be done by using GarageBand to access the "Movie to MPEG-4" export option and "Pass through" the video while only converting the audio content. In the case of M-JPEG files, the audio track can be extracted, converted, and used to replace the original sound track if you have QT Pro available.
    3) QT MPEG-4 slideshow exports can be made iMovie '08 compatible by simply placing the audio/video content in an MP4 container with MPEG Streamclip (free) which strips it of incompatible "Tween" track or manually delete the track with QT Pro.

  • Analog to Digital Converter-- What's A Good Product For My System?

What would be a good analog to digital converter for Final Cut Express HD 3.5 on a Mac OSX 10.4 system? I've used a Canopus on a MacPro with Final Cut Pro before and liked it, but wasn't sure what would be a good product for my macbook. I've looked at the Canopus advc-110 and 55 but am not clear on the difference and if it would work with what I have.

The ADVC-55 is capture only. It includes composite & s-video inputs and stereo audio inputs. Firewire output.
The ADVC-110 is bidirectional (meaning you can both capture and output through it - this is a very good way to monitor your video during production as you can see the actual quality on a monitor/TV rather than just your computer screen, which has limited capability to show you the actual video quality.) It includes composite & s-video inputs and outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output.
The ADVC-300 is also bidirectional and includes composite, s-video and component video i/o (D1 connector) inputs & outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output; and software that enables you to tweak its video settings. Helpful in cleaning up particularly bad analog videos.
I've used these things for years and they all work great. I do not believe there is any difference in the internal conversion hardware ... The primary differences are support for one-way vs. bidirectional conversion; input/output connectors; and the software that comes with the ADVC-300.
If you have basically clean analog video, any of these units will be fine. You can use any analog source (VHS deck, camcorder, DVD player, etc.) and would typically use iMovie or Final Cut Express to capture your video on a Mac.

  • Which is the best Analog to Digital Converter

    Hey everyone,
Im new to this movie making digital world.  I have been using imovie for a while and looking to upgrade to FCP.  Before I spend the money, just a few questions hoping someone would know the answers.
1:  Can I use idvd to burn my movies with FCP?
2:  Im need an analog to digital converter, but not sure which one to get.  I have VHS, Hi8, mini DV, etc...     Which converter is best with mac, specifically with FCP?
3: Does FCP work well with an external harddrive?
    Thanks...

    1. Yes
    2. Canopus and DataVideo are popular but some camcorders have a built in A-D converter. Note that Mini-DV works without needing a converter. Just plug in your camera with FireWire.
    3. Yes

  • Best converter for .Mov to .Flv?

    Hi
I need to find a video converter for .Mov to .Flv(or maybe Mp4 or mpeg).
I found out that you cant create a playlist in .mov...so i need to convert. Youtube's conversion seems to suck though...can i get a better quality .flv conversion?
I have a lot of videos +around 70+ that need to convert to a format with playlist functionality for mac and windows.
Whats a good software to convert to flv.or the other format? currently my videos are 960x540.
    Help is appreciated.

MPEG Streamclip with the Perian plug in should work.
    Both are free.
