I need an old version of Pages for my old Mac. How do I buy it?

Hello,
I have a Mac which does not support any OS X newer than 10.6.8, so I need a Pages version compatible with this. But in the store I just find the newest version of pages. How can I get an older version which is supported by my Mac?

You cannot get anything but the latest version via the App store.  Best option is to purchase an earlier version of the full iWork suite on disk from Amazon/e-bay (loads there to buy).
iWork 09 should work with your system and is more fully fuctional than the latest version.  You will get Keynote and Numbers as well as Pages too.

I cannot get pages from iworks to share on Mountain Lion.  Do I need a new version of pages for Mountain Lion instead of iworks?

You need Pages 09 (Version 4) to take advantage of Mountain Lion's iCloud features. You don't say what version you have.

  • I need an older version of keynote for my older Mac running 10.7.5

How can I get an older version of keynote for my older Mac running OS Lion 10.7.5. I have it purchased for my newer Mac.

Click here and follow the instructions. If they’re not applicable, buy an iWork 09 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay.

  • Need newest version of pages for my iMac. When trying to download latest version the message said I needed OSX 10.9? Where do I get this? I really feel stupid when I can't download a program!

I just worked on a Pages document on my iPad. I wanted to finish it on my iMac (OSX 10.7.5). I emailed the iPad Pages document to get it on my iMac. I then tryed to open the Pages document on my iMac. The message said I needed a newer version of Pages for the iMac. I then went to the Apple store to upgrade Pages for the iMac. When I tried to download the new version, I received a message that Pages couldn't be installed unless I upgraded to OSX 10.9?  What the He.. is going on?

be very careful about getting the iWork "updates."   This forum is FULL of complaints about it.
    Mavericks seems good, though.
If you try Pages 5 and dislike it, Pages 4.3 will still be located in an iWork Folder within your Applications Folder.

Just be careful with Pages 5, it is not strictly an upgrade.
Apple has actually removed over 90 features and some work can be very difficult in the newer version.
It was all done to make it more interchangeable with the inferior iOS version:

  • Pages downloaded, but I still can't open iCloud pages from iPad. Says that I need a new version of Pages on my Mac

For my Mac Pro, after I downloaded the new Mavericks OS, I downloaded the new pages. However, I still can't open iCloud pages from iPad. Says that I need a new version of Pages on my Mac.
    Please help.

It appears that you are launching the old version, probably using an icon in your Dock. That icon is an alias & is not updated. You will need to go to your Applications folder & find the new Pages 5 icon & double-click it. Once it is launched, you can right-click on the icon & choose Options > keep in Dock from the contextual menu.

  • Suddenly not able to open a lot of my documents due to "needing a newer version of pages"..?

I just got my Macbook Air in early december (my old macbook was getting too old), and the ONLY version of pages I have is the newest one.
Originally, it worked fine -(it was annoying and not as good as the old pages, in my opinion however) - and I had no issues for about a month. I was able to successfully open and edit all saved files. I submitted most of them to colleagues and teachers through Google Drive, although I'd always save two copies of every document I used - one for my files and one for drive storage. Suddenly, neither will open.
Just recently, my teacher informed me that he was unable to open my documents anymore. I was puzzled by this and attempted to open the document both in drive and on my computer, but was confused when it informed me I "needed a newer version of pages". I have the NEWEST version of pages. This document was saved on the NEWEST VERSION of pages.
About half of my files - both on google drive and in my storage - are now unable to open or even convert due to me getting a notification saying "I need a newer version of pages".
A lot of the files I received were downloaded through google drive as Microsoft Word files, and were automatically converted. They worked fine as a pages document when I received them, and was able to successfully work on them and complete them and then resubmit them through Google Drive. A month later, these same files will not open, due to me needing a newer version, but no newer versions are even available.
My mac also has a remote disc - everything from my old laptop was transferred to my new by apple when I bought it.
However, the old files are not the issue. It's the files that I've downloaded and editing since I bought my new laptop that are the issue.
I'm also not a genius with computers - I've used a mac since 2011, but have never really encountered issues that needed me to really "get to know" the innerly functions of the computer until now.
Help? Some of the said documents are very important to my work and I need to be able to succesfully submit them so others can open them through google drive or dropbox.

I've seen other people solve their issue this very same way, based on other conversations, but my case is different. No older version of pages exists on my laptop.
My laptop is new, so I have no older version of pages anywhere on my laptop - I never installed it.
All files that I transferred from my old laptop to my new laptop that were made using the old pages still work, but a majority of the new documents that I've created since getting my new laptop will not work.
After further investigation, the ONLY files that will not open are files that had been converted from Microsoft Word to pages and then saved.
So, on my new laptop, I would download a file from another user through Google Drive and then convert it from Word to Pages.
The pages documents worked, and I saved them successfully, and I could reopen them when I first created them.
But now, checking them again a month later, all files and only files that had been converted from word to pages say that "I need to update to a newer version of pages" - but all files that were created in pages by me work fine. And so do documents that I downloaded AS pages documents.
This is the notification I see whenever I try to open a file that was originally a word document. All ex-word format pages documents that I converted from word to pages give me this notification and will not allow me to open the document. They worked originally, but now suddenly do not.. why?

Personally, I would not recommend deleting/removing the iWorks 09 folder for several reasons: one is that the new versions have had several functionalities removed and until you decide that you can work with the new one and do not miss any features the older version had, I would leave the old one in place. Personally, I will not be using the new versions.
The second reason is that you can accomplish what you want using a different approach: simply open a Get Info window of your document and choose which version of Pages you want this to open in - you can also stipulate that all docs like this are opened with whichever particular version.
FWIW: Once you have edited an old document in the new Pages version, you can no longer open it in the older version. However, you can still export it to the old version.

  • "You need a newer version of Pages"

Today, when I tried to open my newsletter to print more copies, I was told I needed a newer version of Pages, which I could get from the App store. But the App Store shows I already installed it, which I did last weekend. Along with the OS update (10.9) that was released. What do I do? How do I open my document?

Be careful beofre you commit to Pages 5, as a lot of features have been removed- particularly some (like linked text boxes, mail merge, and facing pages) that are useful to newsletters.
Your old version of Pages should be still in an iWork folder within you Applications folder.  You can use that if you need it.
Unless you delete Pages 5 or hide it from the system (in a zipped folder, for instance), remember to open your docs with a right-click "Open with... Pages 4.3," since merely opening them in 5 can destroy formatting.
    Good luck!

  • Since I updated my pages to 5.01, I can't open documents created on my iPad today. It says you need a new version of pages to open document.  (My computer says it is installed).  Has any one encountered this?

Well, here's what I found out that works for me...
I had a Pages icon on my dock, and launching it brought up version 4.3.  But I went to my Apps folder and found the new updated icon there and when I launced that it brought up version 5.01.  So apparently the Apple update process left two versions launchable on my iMac.  Weird...

  • Pages '08 says "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." when opening a Pages '08 Document

Created a document 3 years ago with Pages '08.  Got a new Mac last summer, migrated my user account, reinstalled Pages '08.  Upgraded to Mavericks recently.
Now when trying to open the document I get the message "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document."
Note that I have read a number of the messages here that are similar.  To be clear there is only one Pages (Pages '08) on this system.  Its in the iWork folder.
Is it the case that this document and all the other Pages '08 documents on my system are lost forever?
BTW I have looked at the new version of Pages.  Its just plain awful from UX to quality.  What has gone wrong at Apple and specifically in the iWork group in the past few years???
    Thanks for any help!

And in trying to post this I got the "You are not allowed to create or update this content"  Changed the Community from what was automatically selected and seems to work now.  Whats with Apple Engineering and QA these days???

I've never had Pages 5 on my system.  Just to confirm I copied the file to a USBDrive and gave it to a friend to try out.  He has Pages 5 on a new MBP with latest Mavericks.  When he tried to open it he got the following message:
"You document will open in the new Pages for Mac.  If you save it or edit it, you'll need the latest Pages on iOS7 to open it on an iOS device."
But it did open on his system.  He closed it, no save, and reopened but did not get the above message again.
We concluded that the file is actually a Pages '08 file because of the above message.
However we also suspect that when this file was simply opened in Pages 5.2.2 on his system it got flagged and possibly converted which is actually quite offensive!
    Thoughts/Advice?

  • I was sent a .pages doc.  When I try to open it with pages I'm told "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." I have the newest version of pages on my computer. What should I do?

I wonder if you are running an OS earlier than 10.9.x?  If so, you cannot run the *latest* version of Pages, which is 5.1.  Apple is trying to get you to update your OS to 10.9 Mavericks and then get you to update (but defintiely not upgrade) your Pages version to 5.1.  5.1 is, in everything but name, beta software. It not only has many bugs, it also lacks more than 90 features that are present in version 4.3 ("Pages 09"). One workaround that is to open the file with Pages for icloud (this is explcitly beta) and click tools|download a copy in Word format.  Pages 4.3, which is probably the version you have, can open Word documents.  Get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine before starting Pages for icloud: it is s-l-o-w.

  • Sometimes when I send a Pages attachment I can't open it afterwards. I get a message saying I need a newer version of Pages to open it. I find this odd since I created the document.  How can I get the attachment open?

Sometimes when I send an email with a Pages attachment it is tuned into a zip file and then I am unable to open the atttachment afterwards.  I get a message saying I need a newer version of Pages in order to open the attachment.  How can I get around this?

    Carol,
The message saying you need a newer version indicates that you saved from a newer version and tried to open with an older version. This has nothing directly to do with whether the file was compressed and packaged in a .zip file.
If you have two versions of Pages on your computer, you must take care to note which of them you are using. You may want to delete a Dock alias to the older version and you may need to change the Finder preference for which version is set to automatically open .pages files.

  • Cant get my pages docs that I created on my iPad (new version of pages) to open on my MAC.  Reads: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document.". But I have the latest!

Help - I cant get the docs I created in pages on my ipad to open on my MAC. I've used iCloud, emailed to myself - all I get is "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document.".  But my MAC has the newer version!

I have Pages for iOS 2.0.1 on my iPad and Pages '09 (4.3) on my Macbook Pro.
I haven't upgraded anything in the past few months. Still on OS 10.8.5.
    Suddenly, something has changed.
If I open a new Pages doc on my iPad and later try to open it on my Mac, I get the error message saying I need a newer version of Pages.
Also, if I open an existing doc on the iPad (one that I've worked on repeatedly from both devices) I get the same message. A couple did open, but only if I hadn't touched them on the iPad. Anything opened today on the iPad won't open on the Mac.
I can open and edit these docs in the Pages beta at www.icloud.com but not on my Mac.
I don't want Mavericks and a new version of Pages now (I'm in the middle of a major project and have learned not to make major upgrades until major things are finished).
For now, the best I can do is open docs in iCloud, copy all, and paste into a new Word doc. Yes, back to Word. Thought I was finished with Microsoft.
    Is there a better solution?

  • Err Msg: You need a newer version of Pages to open this Document?  I am already on the latest version?

Hi there!  I am recently on Maverick & the latest version of PAGES.  I just went to open up a PAGES document & got the following error message.
You need a newer version of Pages to open this document.
You can download the latest version of Pages form the Mac App Store.
I confirmed I am on the latest version of Pages by visiting the Mac App Store.  When I visit it says INSTALLED.
I created this document with the latest version of Pages.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks so much & continue Being Brilliant out there!

    Hi there fruhulda,
Thanks so much for your reply.  I am truly grateful.  I apologize in advance for just learning this now & from you!  Thank you again!  Your explanation sounds right?  I defintely did not change those.  Currently, I already have documents created in Pages 09 & Pages 5.0 on my computer.  Do I switch back & forth or should I remove Pages 09 from my computer?  If I remove Pages 09 will those already created documents be OK?  Maybe I should just switch back?  I also downloaded the new Keynote, will however I "fix" Pages be necessary for Keynote also?
Thanks again so much!!  People like you make the world a brighter place!!  :  ) StaySm:)ing & Being Brilliant!!
