I need basis ICH5R Info for Raid setup

I have been able to get as far as creating my raid array for the ICH5H, but when I boot, it goes directly to drive A and asks for a boot disk.  How do you load the drives and format the disks and load windows?  Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, apparently there is something wrong because I don't get any message about hitting F6 to load sata drives, like I do with the promise controller.  I wonder if I used the promise setup to load the ICH5R drivers would work?

  • Need a help on AHCI & RAID setup during Win 7 installation

    Hello,
Sorry for a newbie question, but I need to reinstall Win 7 Professional with my new rig.
    I would appreciate your help.
What are the procedures for the windows installation?
I would like to set up AHCI and RAID controller, as someone had suggested that Intel recommends RAID setup even for non-RAID configurations.
Here's the spec of my rig:
    Motherboard: P67A-GD65 (B3)
    CPU:  Intel Core i7 2600k
    CPU Fan: CoolMaster V8 (180W)
    RAM: G.Skil F3-17000CL9D (4GBx2)

    Thanks in advance

The board should comes with a Manuel for you to refer on the installation of different drivers for the controllers.

  • Best configuration for RAID-setup?

After reading the post about what FS would be best for 5x500GB, it occurred to me that I have to migrate my RAID-setup soonish and that I would like to hear some more opinions before doing so.
At the moment, my server is running 64bit Arch for 1.5 years now, and it is composed of new parts (C2D 8400, 4GB RAM and 3x320GB HD) with an 'old' 6-port SATA RAID-controller (HP-rebranded Adaptec 2605-card) that I recuperated from our previous office-server. Since I had never worked with RAID before in my life, I was very happy that installing an FS on it and installing arch on that FS went without a hassle.
Now I have to grow the capacity, and although I have some spare ports (3 out of 6 are free), I fear that I'll have to rebuild the FS, since I didn't install LVM. Rebuilding the array might include a risk to lose my data, so I'm thinking of just starting over and doing it right this time:
    1. Separate disk for the OS, not in a RAID-array
    2. 3-disk RAID-5 array, with LVM
    3. Partition the LVM in two slices (1 for work and 1 for 'play').
Are there any considerations I have to think of before doing this? I think Ext4 is the FS-of-choice for a server that will be doing mainly NFS (media), CUPS, and some HTTP/PostgreSQL...

All sounds good to me... I'm not personally a fan of RAID-5 just due to personal preference, but with 3 disks it's your only option really.

  • Using Disk Utility for RAID setup?

I just purchased 2 1TB Seagate Hard Drives 32mb cache 7200prm that I want to setup a RAID 0 (striping I believe) for Final Cut Pro for rendering. Well I also have a 3rd drive that is identical, question is does more drives in that RAID setup mean faster performance? 2 drives vs 3 or 4, etc.? Also what do you think that actual difference in reading and writing would be approximately?

You can find the max sustained, the average I/O, and minimum. From reviews and Seagate product spec details. There is some overhead for each drive as you seek and assemble the parts of a file.
The burst rate of the drive is likely around 135MB and average of the outer half a solid 100MB/sec.
The bandwidth in the Mac Pro totals 1GB for all drives, even though each is supposed to have 3Gbps.
SSDs are fast catching on for speed and fast system drives, even in stripe raid.
Don't mix 7200.12 with .11s or even different model/series/firmware. And Seagate has had its hands full with firmware issues for years, going back to the intro of SATA actually.
If you want one large volume and if having 200MB/sec matters or helps, you might want to RAID, even partition each drive first to 3/4 level and stripe that 3/4 together to guarantee 200MB/sec range.
But experiment for a couple weeks first.

  • Need Help with Firewire 800 Raid setup

Hello everyone. I am still a newbie with OS X as to most people here but here is my problem. I bought 2 external FW 800 HDD enclosures and install 2 500GB HDD's in them.
I daisy chained them and they work just fine. I would like to setup a Raid 0 on these drives. How do I do it? I go into the disk utility, it states to drag the disks or volumes in, "Cannot Do" and to hot create, "Which is grayed out!"
Can anyone help please? I would like to get this up and running asap.
One more thing, do the drives need to be OSX Journaled or can they be FAT32?
All the help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Need help urgently -- will this RAID setup work?!

At the office we have some old Powermac G4s. not sure of the operating system or anything. all of the graphics department uses brand new, dual processor, 2 GB RAM, powermac G5 beasts. i want to set up a powermac G4 with two 300 GB hard drives (mirrored), with a hardware raid controller. is that doable? i was going to get this card:
    http://trevorcvitkovich.com/December16/IMG_7728.jpg
and just two 300 GB SATA drives. how hard is that? i don't want to use any software based RAID. could this work? i looked inside the G4, and the motherboard has these weird PCI slots that have 3 holes instead of 4 that the card in the picture above does.
    how does that work?
let me know please, i'd like to get this done by the end of the week
    Regards
    ~Lorenzo

Mystical, technically everything sounds good, however, without knowing the OS or exactly what you are saying about the PCI slots it is hard to say for sure. But everything sound good to go.

  • What RAID setups work for each setup?

Can anyone point me to a source that can give me detailed information about what RAID setups are best for each situation. Our current situation is that we have:
2x Xserve RAID running on Xsan with two Xserve G5 servers, one for media and the other for Metadata.
We are thinking about using one whole RAID (2x LUN) for Media, and 1 LUN of the other RAID for metadata, and then the second LUN of the second RAID for switchable media (backup on HD's). So what RAID is best for media and what is best for metadata? Is it possible to set a whole RAID with two LUNs as RAID 0 or would it need to be seperate?
If someone has some info about what RAID setups work best I would be happy to hear about it!
We will be connecting 3x FCP machines through fiber, but other workstations will be connected through a deticated ethernet switch with 1Gb connection to the Xsan but 100Mb connection to the Switch.
    Best regards,

You can also try the Xsan Tuning Guide. It recommends that the Meta info be striped as raid 1. When you are in RAID admin and click on create array it will tell you which raids are good for speed and which ones are good for protection. Here is the link as well

There is also an app you can download to test the bandwidth of the volumes.

  • Best option for initial setup of HD's on Xserve (possible RAID)

I'm just about to set up a new network in a new office and have an Xserve with 3 HD's 2x700GB and 1x500GB drive.
Now i have a fair bit of experience with the server itself, however i have zero experience with RAID.
I would like to start automatic backups of the OS (which i do already in a round about way). And have several share points for users network homes and data.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to setup the HD's themselves, should i RAID? what would be the best option? etc etc etc.
All suggestions are very welcome and appreciated.
    Thanks
    Steven

No one can answer your question - at least not without more information.
When deciding disk layout you need to factor things like how much usable disk space you need - in this case for users' data. Are the users home directories on the server, or do they just upload files to the server for storage/backup?
What's the intensity of the data? Is reliability or performance more important? Would you pull your hair out if you lost a single file? a day's work? a week's work?
How much downtime could you tolerate if the server crashed?
These questions (and probably more) are important because it helps focus on the needs. For example, if the integrity of the data is more important than uptime you could mirror the two 700 GB drives for the user data and install the OS on the single 1TB drive. Of course this leaves you (slightly) vulnerable to a problem on the OS disk and you could be offline for hours if that disk failed. However, your user data would be mirrored and likely protected from disk failure.
On the other hand, if the uptime of the server is more important, you might opt to install the OS on the 700GB mirror, using the 1TB for user data, relying on backups to restore this disk if it fails.
Or, you might decide to put everything (OS and data) on the 700GB mirror, using the 1TB as the backup destination.
On the other hand you might determine that you need 1TB of user storage space, in which case you either need to use the 1TB for user data, or you need to stripe the two 700GB drives into a 1.4TB array, but then that array has no redundancy and the loss of a single disk will result in the loss of all data.
So, as I said, there is no one single answer to your question. You'll need to balance storage capacity and redundancy to find the best match for you.

When I reset BIOS they came back all enabled ( primary and secondary and all 4 SATA. How do I determine which channels are in use? Also which area in BIOS allows me to change from 64 to 16K? I'm a little lost noob (or due to age maybe some Alzimers?)thanks in advance.
    RAID is disabled by default.
Enable SATA as RAID for channels where are your HDD detected: (example: if you are connected your SATA disks to SATA1 & SATA2, configure RAID for  SATA1 & SATA2.)
after raid is enabled, and configured property leave BIOS (SAVE AND EXIT) you will need to setup your raid configuration, by pushing F10 to enter Raid setup after post:
hit F10 when menu popup to enter RAID utility.
    •     Now select Striping, Mirroring, Striping+Mirroring, Spanning.
    •    Next push the tab key, and select the striping block size you want.
    •    Push the tab key again, and select the hard drives you want to include in the Raid array.
    •    Then push F7 to save and finish the Raid array.
Choice Stripping mode for RAID mode and add both HDDs to array. select "Striping Block" to 16k.
then hit F7 when you done. at next menu make your array bootable by selecting array and hit "B":
    config with "Y" when asked.
NOTE: Information on both Disk will be lost.

  • How to enter ICH5R RAID SETUP MENU?

It is said USE "CTRL+I" enter ICH5R RAID SETUP MENU,but when my computer boot up , there only show press "CTRL+F" for promise 378 raid setup, not "CTRL+I"
even you press "CTRL+I" for many times, when computer is power on,it is nothing happen. If you don't install S-ATA harddisk ,you may not enter ICH5R RAID SETUP MENU? isn't it?
I can use "CTRL+F" enter promise 378 raid setup menu, and how can I enter ICH5R RAID SETUP MENU as the explanatory book said??

In BIOS set S-ATA as RAID, after that you will be able to enter the ICH5R-BIOS with ctrl+I. It appears after the promise BIOS.
