I accidentally must have formatted my hdd while trying it partition for win 7. Now I need a boot disk. How do I get it up and running again?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
After you get the disk out of your computer, is the disk a grey disk from another Apple system? If yes, you won't be able to use it to upgrade, as you need a black retail disk. The grey disks are locked to the systems they are manufactured for and identified on the label.

External boot disc for MAc Mini

Please forgive the naivety of this question but if some one could confirm this once and for all in simple terms I would be grateful.
I want to have an external hardrive on which I can place OSX so that I can boot from it, rather than the Mini's built in drive, not least so that I can run the disc utility on the built in hardrive. My question is does this external hardrive have to be USB or Firewire or does it not matter? My Mini is an Intel Duo with 2GB RAM running 10.4.9.

That's exactly right, yes. Since it's not a bootable volume as far as your mini is concerned, it won't give it as an option to install MacOS on it.
Incidentally, once GUID partitioned, you don't have to actually INSTALL MacOS if you want to use it in place of your internal drive. You can use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! to clone the internal to the external as a complete single operation, which will leave you with a bootable external that is an exact duplicate of the internal drive. After that, once the external has been tested out, you can then remove whatever you wish from the internal drive, or use it as a backup for the external.
Either/both CCC and SuperDuper! can be downloaded from www.versiontracker.com.

SSD or spinning disk for Mac Mini server?

I'm using a Mac Mini 2cd as a media server (operating over wifi), and the hard drive is dying - I'm going to replace it, and was thinking of an ssd (the os is on this drive, the media is on a large external). Would this provide any real world speed increases?

I would just run with a standard hard drive then they are much cheaper. You can get a 1TB for about $84
I have an old G4 Xserve that I use to use for that. But, it is just sitting somewhere collecting dust now.

That is fine. The only restriction is the the height of the drive has to be 9.5 cm or less.

You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered.
However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured.

Generally, it's ok to install on two machines as long as they are both yours and you only use one version at a time.

As a graphic design student I wanted to own a laptop that was capable of running Adobe programs and games, but I bought a 2014 Macbook Air; 128GB of storage, 4GB of memory, and runs at 1.4 Ghz. With this information will I still be able to run programs with no problem or will I need to buy a Mac Mini to run all the programs and games that'll be too much for my Air.

Reboot your Mac, as soon as you hear the chime press the option/alt key and hold it until the boot manager appears, select OSX to boot from.

How to make boot disk for MacBook Pro with Mavericks pre-installed

I recently bought a new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which came pre-installed with Mavericks (10.9.0). I want to make a bootable USB disk of the system software, and have successfly used DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) to make the USB boot disks for Lion and Mountain Lion. In those cases, however, I was running earlier versions of the OSX, and downloaded the new OSX version -- Lion and Mountain Lion -- from the App Store in order to make to make the disk. In this case, however, Mavericks was pre-installed, and I was unable to download it from the App Store (an alert said that it couldn't be installed on this computer... presumably because it was already installed). I would apprecite any suggestions as to how I can create the boot disk without the ability to download Mavericks. Thanks very much for any help anyone can provide.

Open App Store and locate the full installer download file (5.29 GBs) for 10.9.1. Download to your computer.

After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. Why is it a Unique version of Lion? The only versions of Lion are ones for older Macs, Before the Mid 2012 models came out, and a version that includes the newer drivers for the newest model Macs, Current shipping Mid 2012 models.
If you are talking about a version for the new Mid 2012 models then you will need to wait for Apple to update their Lion Download servers because right now they do not have the newest Lion version available on those servers.

First try this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Then...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
