I need DVD Studio Pro and another app that can do .*** or .ssa Files

Are there any good Mac OS X apps (preferably free to cheap?) that will export .*** or .ssa files of my subtiles?

To answer the question of why retail DVDs look so good... because they have more money at their disposal. You don't really think these are compressed with a program included with a $79 suite? Or even DVDSP. Commercial DVDs typically use a hardware encoder. And they ain't cheap.
In any case, we would need a better defination than "looks like sh*t". Color? Transistions? Pixelated? What resolution are you using? Next, are you using any motion (Ken Burns effect) on the images. If not, you should, even if only a little. DV was developed for moving images, not stills. I create slideshows fairly regularly with acceptable reuslts. Either we need to find something in your workflow, or maybe you do have too high an expectation. This may provide some insights into the complexities of a DVD:

  • Lion kills SoundTrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Color

After installing Lion on my cloned boot drive FCP 7.0.3 runs but SoundTrack pro, DVD Studio Pro and Color return an error message indicating Lion can't run PowerPC programs. They also have a white slashed circle over them indicating they aren't compatible.
This wasn't a widely advertised restriction of Lion prior to its release.
I'm thankful I have a fully operating Snow Leopard installation.

I don't know why you would have the PowerPC-only versions installed on an intel machine?  It's very weird, because they should be Universal. This may mean that you were running those apps using Rosetta under Snow Leopard, but Rosetta isn't installed with Lion. You should just re-install from the FCS3 DVD and the proper Intel versions will be placed in your Applications folder.
I just launched every FCS3 app under Lion and they all work fine, except for Cinema Tools (which unexpectedly quit.)

  • DVD Studio Pro and Motion won't work

I posted this in the Tiger forum and didn't get a solution so I'm trying here.
After installing Tiger DVD Studio Pro and Motion quit working.
Both applications open (in the menu bar at least), but neither one will open all of its windows and nothing happens when I click on anything in the windows that do open. Nothing's frozen (the menus still respond), but there are no windows to work in.
I booted into Panther from my Backup drive and DVD SP works, but Motion won't even startup.
I'm hurtin' here. Can anyone help?
I'm using DVD SP v2.0.5 and Motion v1.0.1 on a Dual 1.42 PowerPC G4 with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM and an ATI RADEON 9600 Mac Edition video card.

  • TS3968 This also affect DVD Studio Pro and compressor.

This also affect DVD Studio Pro and compressor, that were useless after upgrading to Snowleopard. Prokit 7 solved the problem. How come it doesn't come automatically with software update? Lost two hours on a crashed DVD project and looking for this very simple solution. Love you Apple, but this time you let me down...
After updating to Snowleopard, FCP comes up with a warning about unsupported enablerfiles during start-up. Prokit 7 didn't solve that problem. Anybody...?

    Right on, Eric.
I'm a devoted Windows man, but I must say that DVDSP is the best DVD authoring software I've tried so far.
As far as compressor goes, it depends what program you are exporting from and for what purpose. There are many options in there and I for instance found out that using something like a Photo JPEG compression rather than a DV PAL setting for a project that was all in DVD PAL gave a better output.
Compressor is a pretty big program and by trying different things out, you can probably find what you need.
Sounds like there could be a problem with your computer if everything comes out as crappy as you say...?

i purchased dvd studio pro and im trying to install it but when i go to click continue it gives me this  "you cant open the application gestalt tool becasue powerpc applications are no longer supported" what does that mean and how can i fix this ?

I note this information from Wikipedia: "DVD Studio Pro was a high-end software tool published by Apple Inc. to allow users to create DVD masters to be sent out for replication at production houses. Its tight integration with other Apple applications allows users to take Final Cut Pro and Motion projects and render them into the DVD format without encoding to intermediary formats. This streamlines the production workflow and reduces overhead."
If that is your intent, finding a substitute program that will run on your Mac may not be as efficient.  Others can advise you on alternatives, or you can post a new thread specifically with that question.
BTW: what Mac and what version of OS X?
If it is important to you to continue to use DVD Studio Pro, consider the option of installing Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels on your Mac:

  • Closed captioning issues DVD studio Pro and workflow

So I have been trying to attach a .scc file to a dvd for the optioin of closed captioning. (for 2 dyas now)  I did figure out a workflow to make it happen but all the suggested workflows online and in the book did not work for me and I have no idea why.
I have a HD sequence 1440x1080.  It has some old SD video in it as well.
The only way I was able to get a DVD with closed captioning was this workflow:
Go to HD sequence and select all in timeline so it is highlighted.  Command (apple) C so it is copied.
    Go to File> New Sequence.
Control click on new sequence and go to settings.
under general tab make sure that it is set to  720x480 with NTSC (3:2) chosen from the drop down menu
Pixel aspect is set to NTSC CCIR 601/DV and that anamorphic IS checked
    dominance : lower (even)
    frame rate 29:97
    QT vid settings DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
audio 48 khz 16-bit channel grouped.
    click OK
Then open SD sequence and command (apple) V to paste.
At this point I noticed that the SD video on the new SD timeline was expanded or blown up.  I had to control click each SD shot in the timeline (or do one at a time) and control click> remove attributes.  It gave me a few options to click and when those in dark font are clicked it will set your SD shots back to normal.
I tried Hightlighting the entire SD seauence and changing the attributes, but it effected the HD video also so it was easier to just adjust the SD shots in the SD timeline/sequence.
Now that everything was normal in my SD sequence, I exported out a QT video.
I opened up DVD Studio Pro and put my QT file in it.  Went to DVD Studio Pro preferences in the top left corner and made sure that MPEG-2 SD tab was open
    clicked 4:3 aspect ratio
    Start was 00:00:00  etc.
and for me drop frame was clicked. (my video was shot drop framed)
    click OK
Click Graphical view (or in outline view it would be tracks and video name) Click on Green "TV" looking  item (for me I wanted the first play on it)
Then look in your inspector for the tab called "other"
Click on "other" tab and then where it says file.... click on choose.  Navigate to where your .scc file is and hit ok
Burn your DVD and test it in QT and on a DVD player/TV to make sure the CC optioin turns off and on.
That is how I got it to work, but it was changed to a DV format and has some pixelation.
I read where many folks run their exported QT file from FCP in HD and open it in compressor and change it's size there and make a mpeg 2..Some send the video to compressor from the timeline to make a mpeg 2... some add the .scc file in compressor.... some run their SD file through compressor and change to mpeg 2.  Personally I had NO LUCK in doing anything in compressor (after running 2 days of tests) converting to a mpeg 2 in the DVD folder settings,... in using any of the program and elementary streams under the formats folder.  NOTHING worked with any type of mpeg 2  AS well as adding the .scc file to the video in either compressor or in DVD studio Pro.
WHY?  Why did none of that compressor workflow work?  Why didn't adding the .scc file work in DVD studio pro?
    Anyone have any ideas?

    You have two problems.
    Converting your video to SD
Getting the .scc file to play nice
    1st problem
I would export your HD sequence(self contained not QT conversion).
Many recommend and have had much success using Compressor to do the down convert(frame controls all set to best).
I prefer using FC to do the down convert. I find it more consistent. This adds a step but still prefer it. I re-import the HD file I just exported into my project and then create an appropriate SD sequuence.  Since your HD sequence displays 16x9 you will want to create a SD anamorphic sequence (I do 720x486 but you can do 480 too). Add the HD file to the new SD seq and then render. Export an SD file and then convert for DVD.
    2nd problem
I have not had success adding the .scc file in Compressor. It should work but OE and/or other factors have never allowed me to get this to work properly.
The .scc file is presumably made from your sequence time code or possibly the QT export TC depending on how you sent it out and what you got back. The .scc should be based on the sequence TC. By default tracks in DSP are set to zero based TC which will not reference the TC associated with the original sequence TC which was used to make your .scc file. You can change this by right-clicking(control-click) on the time area in the track and you should see an option for asset-based timecode. Once you have changed this try importing the scc file.

anyone know of a good IOS app that can play all media files, MKV, AVI, Xvid with subtitles across a home network, file share on a NAS or Windows PC?? I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm not affiliated w/ the developer, just a happy user that gave up fighting the apple podcast app a while ago.  I used to have a bunch of smart playlists in itunes for my podcasts, and come home every day and pathologically synced my phone as soon as I walked in the door, and again before I walked out the door in the morning.
Since my wife was doing this too, we were fighting over who's turn it was to sync their phone.
Since I've switched to Downcast, I no longer worry about syncing my phone to itunes at all.  I can go weeks between syncs.
Setup a "playlist" in downcast (ex., "Commute") and add podcasts to that playlist.  Add another playlist ("walk" or "workout") and add different podcasts to that one.
Set podcast priorities on a per-feed basis (ex., high priority for some daily news feeds, medium priority for some favorite podcasts, lower priority for other stuff).  Downcast will play the things in the priority you specify, and within that priority, it will play in date order (oldest to newest).
Allegedly, it will also sync your play status to other devices, although that is not a feature I currently use and can't vouch for.  It uses apple's iCloud APIs, so to some extent may be limited by what Apple's APIs can do.

  • DVD Studio Pro and Compressor suck!

I usually never do this, come to a forum and trash a software. But I must say that Compressor (especially!) and DVD Studio Pro simply suck. They are nowhere near a professional standard. In fact they are worse than other encoding and authoring softwares which would not even dream of billing themselves as "professional".
Everytime I encode something there are pops and pixellations. Most of the time in different places. To ensure that a video is encoded properly (and when I say properly I only mean without defects like pixellation etc), I have to encode it anywhere from 5 to 10 times, with the time expense of watching each version to make sure they are clean. Not to mention the extremely poor quality of encoding, even at best settings.
Artists, musicians, filmmakers - do not even try to use Compressor or DVD Studio Pro for your important projects. Look elsewhere. They will make your hair go white. Apple, shame on you for realeasing such a crappy product!

    Right on, Eric.

  • DVD STUDIO PRO AND TOAST

    Hi,
I use Compressor 2.0 and have been experienceing problems with the Encoding since there are problems variable bit rate in this version.
Is it possible to create an MPEG2 file in toast to be imported into a DVD Studio Pro project?
If not, are there any other programs that can create an MPEG2 from a Final Cut Pro Quicktime File that can then be imported into DVD Studio Pro
    Thanks,
    Curtis

You have a wide range of choices far better than Toast (which I don't think you can use as an encoder only). Look for posts about BitVice, MegaPEG.X or Canopus Procoder (PC only), or Google for MPEG2 encoders and see what you get.
Most of the folk I know use a range of encoders for different situations. There is always some debate about which is best, and ultimately you need to try them out and see for yourself which you prefer to use.
I can thoroughly recommend BitVice and MegaPEG as options well worth looking at on a Mac, and Procoder on the PC. There are plenty of others though... how big is your budget?

  • Need DVD Studio Pro - not Final Cut

I'm doing volunteer work for an organization that trains dogs for the disabled. All I need is DVD Studio Pro.... Why has Apple bundled it? The expense is far too high for someone who doesn't need the rest of the software. Is there any way to get DSP 4? Perhaps used?

On a Mac the only options are iDVD and DVD Studio Pro... unless you want to work in OS9 and can find (or afford) a copy of Sonic Fusion or Sonic Creator.
By far the best way forward is to try to find a copy of DVDSP on eBay, or to invest in the whole bundle...
On a PC the options are far more numerous, with lots of offerings from Sonic, plus Adobe Encore to get you started off. If you are looking for something a lot more sophisticated, then look at DVD Lab which is very reasonably priced and gives great access to the features of the DVD spec.
