I need guidance on using an i-pad with older people

I represent a UK Charity that is considering rolling out the use of i-pads to older people who attend day centres so that when they are at home they can access, very easily, information about local services, activities, friends, family etc. I have so far concluded that an i-pad with a mobile contract should allow them unfettered access the Internet  thus information and e-mails. It would not need another computer to piggy-back on nor a wireless router. Applications specifically tailored to older people who are living alone. I would like some guidance on the realities of persuading older people that the i-pad is not a 'computer' but merely a window to the world. I would welcome guidance on how to set up such a roll out programme, costs, pitfalls, unexpected advantages etc.Help !!?

I would try a few iPads first, may work for some just fine, others likely not at all.
Some of the drawbacks of the iPad for some seniors I've found are as follows:
1: can't scale the UI for their poor eyesight
2: touchscreen issues with colder fingers
3: UI has a lot of hidden and not clear cut references, lots of guessing, harder to learn
4: difficult to hold, no mouse, having to raise their arms to use, fragile device easily dropped.
5: some sites they use are not compliant, or use plug-ins the iPad can't use, like historical records, government sites and such designed for a desktop OS and a mouse pointer
Believe it or not, I've found Windows XP to be the best for seniors as they have had the most familiarity with it, but adopting to Windows 7 themed as close to Windows XP to be the most trouble free on newer machines.
Your results may vary and your learning level of the seniors you work with may vary.
Usually the ones are active will go out and buy their own iPad or computer they like, however with shut-ins your likely looking at doing everything for them and they are more interested in your company and may only feign interest. You'll find out the iPad is only being used while your there.
If you really want to help them, then give them something as close to what they already know how to use or others can assist to take the workload off you.
They mostly prefer a mouse, pointer and a keyboard over a touchscreen.
All I can suggest is s mixed approach, not all iPad and not all desktop computers, however you will find the desktop computers are considerably less headache, cost less , autoupdate etc., and break down less than a iPad.
You can set the desktop machine to do things automatically, it's always hooked to the power, the iPad needs to be charged, it needs this or that update and so forth.
Not knocking the iPad, and it can work for some, but likely not all.
I know as a young person it's tempting to think a lot of older seniors can grasp new technology as  easy as the young, but a lot don't, it's a whole new different way of doing things and it's foreign to them, take them so long to learn they they don't want to bother.
So sometimes it's just better to give them something as close to what they already know, your trying to help them remain active, not torture them with every new technological gadget that magically appears on the market, is popular now but won't be 3 years from now as something newer is released.
You'll catch on soon enough who you can use a iPad with or not, unfortunatly a "organization" is thinking a global rollout, when a much more tailored approach is better.
I've hope I've made my point.
Good luck

Yes. If the device doesn't have a connection to the Internet, then there is no way for it to report its position.

  • Using Windows 8.1 With Older Domain Controllers

Is there any document that would specify types of incompatibility we might expect when using Windows 8.1 with older domain controllers, either Windows 2000 or Windows 2003?
I assume at minimum that these older domain controllers would not have group policies that are able to support the full security policy feature set of Windows 8.1?    For such cases, how do we configure security policy on those 8.1 domain member

  • How can I scroll thru mail inbox using my touch pad with Yosemite, I  was able to use my touch pad to scroll mail before

I can not use my touch pad to roll down my mail box or within a individual mail item. I was able before yosemite?
My touch pad works for all other apps,

I think I am having the same problem.  I am using a macbook pro 15 and this morning it received an OSX update, it is now on 10.10.2.  I use Office365 email for work and suddenly I can't use 2-finger scrolling over my inbox list.  I can scroll through the email body and there is no problem with gmail inbox.
this is a real pain, when i attempt to scroll it attempts to scroll the whole web page, it doesn't seem to recognise that my mouse pointer is over the list of emails of my inbox.
i hope apple know about this and can fix it.

  • Using G5 iPod Video with older Firewire cable

I have an older iPod, the 15GB model that used the Firewire cable with the dock connector, but I just purchased a new 60GB iPod Video. It comes with an USB cable and not a firewire one, but I already have the power brick and stuff that uses my Firewire cable. Can I use my older cable with my new iPod Video eventhough it warns me when I plug it in?

You can use the firewire cable to charge the new iPod, but you can't use it to sync content onto your new iPod.
The power brick with firewire cable will charge the new iPod without any problems at all.

  • Need guidance on using ddi_regs_map_setup solaris system call

    Hi all,
Am a beginner in using Sun Solaris.
I am working on porting our source code from linux to solaris.
In Linux we are using inb/outb to read/write to keyboard data port(0x60) .
I know that there is an equivalent system call for inb/outb in solaris. But in man page(of sun os) it is mentioned that inb/ outb are obsolete. It was mentioned that we can use ddi_get8/ddi_put8 functions respectively.
ddi_get8 call requires ddi_acc_handle_t as a parameter which we can get it from ddi_regs_map_setup system call.
    Syntax for this call is:
    int ddi_regs_map_setup(dev_info_t *dip, uint_t rnumber,
    caddr_t *addrp, offset_t offset, offset_t len,
    ddi_device_acc_attr_t accattrp, ddi_acc_handle_t handlep);
Please let me know where does the 0x60 port number fits in the above system call and what does these parameters rnumber, offset, len corresponds to ?

    Hi,
The Fault_PC 0x13575e8 tells you exactly where you
die. I assume you have used this in mdb on
the core file to find you are dying in the ddi_get8 call?
Are you checking return value of ddi_regs_map_setup?
Are you sure the register you are accessing is in register set 1?
Are there other places prior to the panic where
the ddi_get/ddi_put routines work correctly? A bus error
here generally means the location you are trying to access
does not exist on the device. (It could also be alignment,
but not with ddi_get8). The address
looks like 1fe.02001400, which looks like a possibly
    valid address in I/O space.
I would print the value of wc->ioaddr to make sure
it is a valid virtual address.

  • If I use my I pad with the power source plugged in will it affect the battery ?

Is it harmful to the battery if I leave the I pad plugged in while in use?

I do it all the time.
It does need to be plugged into the wall, not into your USB (Most USB's give out so little power that using actually drains more than is coming into the iPad), but it works just fine plugged in.

  • Need guidance - replace entire iTunes Match library with new library

Been using iTunes as my music manager/player since 2003. Currently have about 5,000 songs which are a mix of selective CD song rips, iTunes purchases and Amazon Mp3 downloads. Lots of missing artwork, incomplete albums, wrong genres, etc. I use iTunes Match to sync across multiple Macs and iOS devices, including 3 Apple TVs. It all works OK, but I recently undertook a major project to re-rip all of my CDs/Box Sets in their entirety – about 20,000 tracks. I performed the new rips on a Mac Mini running Windows 7 in BootCamp using Roxio Creator to get a 'universal' Mp3 (256kbs) format and keep everything separate and apart from my current iTunes/Match libraries. Total library size came out around 80-85GB, saved on an external USB HDD.
Recently had my iMac 1TB HDD replaced under Apple’s recall program and looked at it as an opportunity to totally rebuild my iTunes library from scratch using the new, complete album rips. I’ve loaded the new 80GB library onto the iMac and am currently using TuneUp Media to ‘clean up’ metadata and album artwork on the new library. I've turned off iTunes Match to isolate the iMac during this stage of the process.
When cleanup is complete, I would like to totally replace my current iTunes Match library with the new larger library. I think the songs will sync OK, but I’ve put a lot if effort into cleaning up the album artwork and am afraid that, if I don't take some precautions, iTunes Match will overrule and mess up my new artwork when I activate it.
    My plan is to
From the iMac, first copy (or should I export) the entire rebuilt library to an external drive as a backup, hopefully preserving all of the artwork and metadata corrections in the process (true?).
On my MacBook Pro, copy my current Match library to a different external drive to ensure preservation of any unique tracks I may have missed in building the new library. Then delete the entire library – both local and Cloud. I should then have an empty iTunes Match library, correct?
Then, on my iMac, activate iTunes Match and let it upload/match all the new songs/data to create a new Cloud library with all the new albums, descriptors and artwork.
Do I need to individually deactivate Match and delete local libraries on all my other devices also, or does the total Cloud library delete I perform on my MacBook Pro then transfer to all my other registered iOS and OSX devices that have Match activated?

Thanks bmw249. I have good news and bad news. Good news: Apple very quickly deauthorized my computers so I was able to drop the lost computer that was taking up a slot and (I suspected) confusing iTunes Match.
The bad news is that this didn't make any difference. Nearly all the songs in my iTunes library have an iCloud status of "error" and when I turn on iTunes Match, it churns for a while before telling me that I already have 25,000 songs in the cloud and can't add any more. What I expected is for it to recognize that most of the 25K songs are the very same ones sitting in this local iTunes library. It should be substantially fewer than 25K because I also deleted 1000+ classical music pieces that I have sitting in Amazon Cloud, in hopes of freeing up space for my recently purchased and created music to be uploaded to iCloud. But no dice.
I am now downloading ~800 songs that iTunes thinks I have only on iCloud. I then plan to figure out how to deactivate iCloud and iTunes Match on this PC so that nothing will be deleted locally when I cancel my iCloud account (it runs out in March 2013 but I assume I can cancel and deactivate the account sooner). The "convenience" of this service isn't worth the many dozens of hours of hours I have spent trying to get it to work the way Apple says it works. Amazon Cloud (also costing ~$25 a year) has a limit of something like 20 GB and no specific limit on number of songs. I buy most music there anyway and have already uploaded most of the rest, so this makes the most sense. I really like the way iTunes Match can (in theory) keep all my music sync'd and smoothly stream to my iPhone even over 3G. Amazon Cloud takes a bit more effort but does much the same thing.
Thanks for listening. I'm assuming this is a "moderated" forum and that this post will soon be removed for my Amazon comments.

  • How do I improve my connectivity using the I pad with cell?

How can I improve connectivity on my I Pad when using cell service?

What kind of problems are you having?  The signal usually depends on the signal based on the distance from the tower and other natural things such as obstructions and things like that.  If your cell phone is going to have lousy service in an area, chances are, your iPad is going to as well as it uses the same towers

  • Need Help on using CAS Incremental Crawl with JDBC data source

    Hi,
As part of one of the e-commerce implementations, we are implementing a delta pipeline which reads the data from the database views. We plan to crawl the data with the help of CAS JDBC data source. In order to optimize the data reads, we want to use the CAS capabilities of incremental crawl. We rely on CAS to be able to identify the updates available in the subsequent incremental crawl and only read the updated data for any given crawl unless we force a full crawl.
We have tried implementing the above setup using JDBC data source. CAS reads from the database and stores it in the record store. The Full crawl works fine however; we observed some unexpected behavior during the incremental crawl run. Even when there is no change in the database, crawl metrics show that certain number of records have been updated in the record store and the number of updates differ in every subsequent run.
Any pointers what can be the issue ? Does CAS has the incremental crawl capability using JDBC data source ?
    Regards,
    Nitin Malhotra

    Hi Ravi,
Generic Extraction is used to extract data from COPA tables. And delta method used to extract delta records (records created after initilization) is timestamp.
    What is this timestamp?
Assume that, you have posted 10 records one after the other to the COPA tables. And we do initilization to move all these 10 records to BW system. Later another 5 records are added to COPA tables. How do you think the system identifies these new 5 records (delta records).?
It identifies based on a timestamp field (eg : Document created on ,a 16 digit decimal field).
Assume that, in our previous initilzation, say  "document created on" field for the last (or the latest) record is 14/11/2006, 18.00 hrs. and  timestamp is set to the 14/11/2006, 18.00hrs.  then when you do delta update, the system treats all the records with "document created on" field is greater than 14/11/2006, 18.00 hrs as delta records. This is how new 5 records are extracted to bw system and timestamp is again set to the new value besed in field in the records.(say 14/11/2006, 20.00hrs)
Assume that, you have two records with "document created on" field as 14/11/2006, 17.55hrs and 14/11/2006, 17.57hrs. and they were updated to the COPA table after 14/11/2006,20.00hrs (at this time last delta load is done)  due to some reason. How can you bring these two records? For this, purpose we can reset the timestamp at KEB5. In this eg, we can reset as 14/11/2006, 17.50 hrs) and do the delta again. So, the system picks all the records which are posted after 14/11/2006,17.50hrs again.  But remember that, doing this, you sending some of the records again (duplicate records). So, make sure that you sending ODS object. otherwise you end up with inconsistant data due to duplicate records.
    Hope this helps!!

  • Error 4450 when trying to burn audio cd....used to work fine with older version of ITunes....

Is Itunes not compatible with windows cd burner.....

I'm having the same problem using 700mb cd-r, but when I try to burn smaller size playlists (300mb) it works fine. I know that when burning as an audio cd the tracks about double in size, so this makes sense. However when I try to burn a playlist 400mb (ends up as 800mb on audio cd) itunes burns most of the songs but errors out on the last few. My guess is the cd runs out of room because itunes thinks it's a 800mb cd and tries to burn that much to it, when in reality it's only a 700mb cd. itunes will actually try to split a playlist that comes out to 1200mb across 2 cds, but still tries to burn 800mb per cd and errors once the cd runs out of room before it has 800mb on it. There needs to be some way to tell it the size of the cds, or at least an update where they fix the size detection. In the mean time it looks like we're stuck with manually splitting playlists so they're smaller than 350mb (if you have cds a different size than 700mb then just keep the playlist below half the cd's capacity).

  • Using GRaid Thunderbolt drive with older, non-thunderbolt mac.

I have a GRaid 4TB thunderbolt external drive. Can I use that with an older mac that doesn't have thunderbolt if I have a thunderbolt to firewire adapter?

It won't work.  No adapter exists at the moment.  At this point, a Thunderbolt display needs a Thunderbolt signal sent from a Thunderbolt compatible device.
MAYBE you can plug the older MBP into a Thunderbolt peripheral (like the Promise Pegasus RAID disk), then plug the Thunderbolt display into the Promise...but that seems like an overly expensive work-around.

No, as mentioned it is not useable as a true phone, and the carriers will not treat it as such,
You can make voice over IP calls with it, just as you can with just about any internet connected device.  But no cell phone company is going to let you use a cell phone plan on a data-only device like an iPad.
