I need help finding a training course for FCP X

I am on Larry Jordan's site, but that only involves watching videos.  I learn better by working on a project at the same time.  This newbie needs some direction.  I need a hands on training course.  Please help.

As some of the others have stated both Ripple Training and Lynda.com are excellent options. Lynda.com offers a very wide range of training (including Logic Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4, etc.) that you can access via subscription. If you want to work directly with project files then you will need the higher end subscription to download the course files. Lynda.com just updated their FCPX training to the latest version of the software. Ripple Training is also excellent, and comes from the guys behind the FCPX & Motion certification courses. Their training is offered a la carte, and will run you a few hundred dollars to get everything.
Another great option is MacProVideo.com, they offer both purchases and subscriptions and have a decent range of courses. Their new Film Craft series isn't about FCPX, but is absolutely worth taking if you're new to the industry. They have great FCPX training, but are much more geared towards music programs.
You aren't likely to find a one size fits all approach to your training needs, and honestly, if you've got the time, complete as many of them as possible. Both Lynda and Ripple offer excellent courses on the art of editing. Ripple Training's Motion courses are second to none.
One more option would be taking a course at an Apple Certified Training Center. I didn't do this for FCPX, but did for my Logic Pro X & Motion 5 certifications and it worked out very well. The downsides are that it's very expensive, but you get to sit with an instructor, ask questions, and at the end of the course you can take the certification exam for free (well, included in your class). You really can't go wrong as long as you keep your education moving forward.

  • Need help finding Ideal MP3 Player for my company to give as xmas gifts to our clients

<SPAN class=postbody>The company I work for is planning on giving away 50 Mp3 players to large clients--primarily because we started our own podcast site with daily Metals Updates ( investment company). http://podcasts.gbtg.net/ I picked up 2 Creative Labs Nano players, and found the setup was lengthy, and far from foolproof--if you are not very careful, the Nano would fail to be able to play the wma podcasts you push in from your PC. Worse still, I can not find a way to easily show cleints how to do an auto synch type of function, so the they can just plug the Nano into their PC at night, and yank it out the next day with the newly updated podcast in it...it would also be nice to delete podcasts older than 3 days or so.... Tech support suggested I try the sniffer function, which of course I had already activated---there was no discussion of how to use this functionally for podcasts. Does anyone have suggestions in Mp3 players better suited for this purpose, or for better software than the Windows Media Player or the Creative Media software they provide? Thanks, Dan

    danvolker wrote:
Thanks for the reply. The 2 units I picked up are Zen Nano's. While I understand they are supposed to function much like external hard dri'ves, and that is a simple matter to just drag files from the PC to the Nano "dri've", when I did that, the wma files ( the podcasts) would show in the Nano lcd, but they would not play. However, after installing all of the software ( both Creative with sniffer, and the Nano Explorer) the Nano player began magically playing the podcasts.... I had the same experience of two separate PC's, with 2 separate Nano's. I don't really know what specifically made the Nano's play the wma files--if it was the Nano Explorer , if there was some driver that loads when you get the Nano Explorer.... I don't think it was the larger Creative MediaSource software with sniffer---on one of the Nano's I purposely did not load the Nano Explorer initially, and when using the Creative Media source to push the files over, it still failed to play within the Nano. You could easily play the files from the nano, on the PC through windows media player--as if they were on a firewire or USB dri've. But the Nano needs to be able to play the files itself away from the computer. Maybe the nano explorer helped--maybe their was some auto loaded codec that finally arri'ved with the time online... I have no idea.
That's strange. Are the WMA files licensed? If they are you have to copy them with MediaSource or Windows Media Player.
Back to the media sniffer....What I need is relati'vely simple instructions I can send to my clients ( a largely novice computer user base, with essentially zero exposure to MP3 players...they are investors, not generation X'ers :-) The podcasting concept appeals to all of them, but I need to make it very simple to pull the MP3 player out of its Xmas box, plug it into the PC, and have it auto update. We can pre-configure each MP3 Player we send out--if there is a brand where this would help. With the Nano the hardware does not have any pre-config settings that will help. So I'm back to looking for a software ona CD that will install simply and make this auto podcast download a reasonable function for these clients to be able to handle. Making them choose folders, set the folders as a library, then set the deletion dates for old files, and the synchronization behavior in general is too much work for people who have never done any of this. Once they experience the podcasts for a few days or weeks, they will be incentivised to learn "advanced" configuration proceedures---but I don't want this to begin this way.
Really all you have to do is enable the Media Sniffer, and if the files already go into the default directory then nothing else.
Then you would also need to sync the player with the PC, which is essentially just following the syncing process.

  • NEED HELP FINDING THE RIGHT APP FOR MY IPAD!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M TRYING TO FIND A APP FOR MY IPAD THAT YOU CAN TYPE A LETTER OR PRESENTATION THEN CLICK PRINT AND IT WILL GO TO A WIRELESS PRINTER!!!!!!

There are a large number of word processing programs available. A simple app store search in the productivity section will bring up a wide range, from Docs2Go to Pages and many in between. There are also simple text editors, such as Elements and others which are cheaper, but not as full featured.
For printing, you need an HP printer that supports AirPrint. No special app on the iPad will allow you to print to any printer, just to those that are AirPrint enabled.
Being on a PC, I don't know of any other printing options. If you have a Mac available, you can install Printopia, and print wirelessly to any printer your Mac can print to.

  • Need help finding a Metal case for my Iphone

I sometimes work around heavy equipment and bump into things and I fear that I will break my Iphone so it is just sitting in a box until I can find something that will really protect it. What I would like is a metal case that has a metal cover that flips over the front glass part. I want to be able to have it withstand someone stepping on it and not break the glass or any part of it. I do have a metal case but it doesn't protect the front screen and I can't seem to find something that protects the whole thing. Has anyone seen what I am looking for and can point me to it. Thanks very much.
    UriahSky

    Uriahsky,
Any case you put around the iPhone should also be transparent to radio waves around the antenna. Metal is not.
There are several hard plastic cases that are radio transparent, but I am not aware of any metal cases that meet your requirements, and would still allow the iPhone to access wireless networks or use the phone portion.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Need help finding a good monitor for a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0)

    Hi
I've owned Macs since the 90's - the past 7 years have been using Imacs...  I'm going to purchase a Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.0) with the Nvidia 6600LE card.  Whats a decent monitor for it?  It's DVI output only as far as I can tell - I want at least a 22 or 24 inch monitor and want a fairly inexpensive one as I'm a poor man (Social Security disability).  Can anyone suggest one - I can't tell what screen resolutions are optimal for the card (googled till my eyes hurt) if I knew that I could start hunting CompUSA, Sams Club, etc.

Check out newegg.com. I just got the same G5 you have this past summer and a couple months ago finally decided it was time to ditch the old 21" CRT Viewsonic Ive been using for years.
I picked up a 21" Acer widescreen HD LCD on sale for $119.00 from newegg and could not have been happier..
Ive never bought anything from Acer before but its so far got no complaints from me other then, the DVI cable they give you is the wrong type to use with your G5's video card. Lucky for me it had a DVI-VGA adapter so I could get running. Its running just fine at 1900x1200 without any dual link DVI connecter.
One thing I like about newegg is you get to read user reviews and they are not afraid to tell you if something is bad. Theyve always got different models and brands rotating on and off sale so check em out and make sure you check the reviews and you can find a killer deal.
I think the Viewsonics I looked at in the same size were around $199 or so.. I wouldve got one but Im a broke and jobless kinda guy nowadays so had to get one as cheap as I could..

  • Need help finding an audio interface for my old ADAT

    Hello,
I've been using Cakewalk Sonar for about 3 years and recently purchased a Macbook Pro and am making the switch to logic. In Windows I was using a E-mu 1212m PCI audio card that was connected via lightpipe to a Behringer ADA8000 8-channel preamp that has ADAT lightpipe output.
The songs I do are 90% audio with midi only used very sparingly for maybe a piano here and there. I record drums with a 6 mic setup (2 overheads, 2 on snare, one bass, one hi-hat). I'm looking for a new audio interface to use with my Macbook Pro. I'm also looking at purchasing Logic Express as it seems like the only things in Pro that affect me is more channels than I use on songs.
I would really like to spend no more than maybe 400-600 dollars if possible. Based on reading these forums, the best thing may be for me to get a MOTU 828 MKII off eBay (they seem to be available for about 500) or PreSonus Firepod.
I've heard that some people love the PreSonus Fireface, but I'm not sure how the Firepod compares. Are the converters on the Firepod and 828 comparable or is the 828 significantly better?
Also, my behringer preamps seem OK but I wonder if the Firepod would probably have better sounding ones, I think I only paid 2 or 300 dollars for the Behringer one.
Any feedback at all would be great. Alot of great stuff on this forum I'm just having a tough time figuring out if I should ditch my existing ADAT preamp for a Firepod or use it with the 828 basically.
    Thanks,
    -Jayme

  • Need help picking Mac Book specifications for FCP

Okay. . .dumb beginners question here:
Which MacBook and how should it be configured would you order to run latest version of FCP?
I'm ready to order one and to order FCP.
    TIA
    Pending     Pending

agreed. a MacBook Pro is what you will need if you wish to take full advantage of all the software in the FCS1 bundle, even more so for FCS2.
My preference is for the 17". Although obviously larger and heavier, it has the screen real estate that you need for the Pro apps.
Internal hard disc, bigger but slower or smaller and faster? I'd go for the bigger but slower (unless you can get one of those new 200GB 7200rpm toshiba drives which is best of both worlds). Why wouldn't I go for the 7200 Rpm ? Well first, my internal is not my media drive. Even so, I've never actually had a problem with the slower laptop drives for capture or playback at a pinch, but I may have just been lucky in that regard. So, for me, given that discs have a habit of filling up with crap, and given it is not my primary media drive, then bigger is better.
RAM? As much as you can afford. 3GB is the current limit for the MBP's.
As we all know, OSes and app's have a RAM hungry nature which seems to know no bounds. As things progress, 3GB will not seem like so much.
External media drive? Yes of course, highly recommended. If you don’t have one then your internal disc will be eaten up by clip media in no time (especially if you opted for the smaller faster internal disc... And, as noted above, if you get an external drive for your media then the speed of your internal drive is les of an issue). There are a number of options for external HD. There is one primary questions that you need to answer. Do you envisage needing to edit in the field without any access to a power supply ?
If the answer is “yes”, then you need to buy a “bus-powered” solution ie one that can be powered just by plugging it into the laptop. This limits you to using a laptop hard disc in an external Firewire enclosure. As mentioned before, laptop drives have a smaller capacity than their desktop cousins (and they’re more expensive). The best bus-powered solution is either G-Technology’s “G-RAID Mini” or Lacie’s “Little Big Disk”. Both contain 2x160GB hard discs in a hardware RAID, and connect via Firewire 800. This makes them very fast, and gives them a larger capacity (320GB). They are very reliable but also very expensive. Single disc solutions are of course much cheaper. You can buy these from the big brand names too (Lacie’s “Rugged” line are supposed to be hard wearing), or you need not go with a ‘brand name’ drive at all. You can buy the discs and Firewire based drive enclosures separately in most computer malls, and then put them together yourself. These would not be RAID solutions of course, so not as fast and not the same capacity ... But much cheaper.
If “bus-powered” is not necessary then your other choices expand significantly. Currently the best (and fastest) option would be an SATA RAID. This requires using an ExpressCard/34 eSATA adapter in the laptop to provide the eSATA interface for the RAID. SATA drives/interface are very much faster than Firewire. You could add a single drive or an entire eSATA RAID. If SATA is overkill for your needs then you can choose a external firewire drive. My drive of choice for this is G-Technology’s “G-RAID” which has a large capacity, and is fast and very reliable. Again, its not cheap.
Don’t buy a USB harddrive. They cannot maintain a fast enough sustained data rate such as is needed for working with video.

  • Over from PC...Need help configuringing my Mac Pro for FCP

Just made the move a few weeks to Mac. Bought a Mac Pro ( and 2 Samsung T240 monitors) and am upgrading components for use with FCP. I have been editing for about 10 years (mostly volleyball highlight films and fishing videos) in Premiere Pro. I am currently using the Sony Vx-1000 but will be purchasing either the Sony EX-1 or HVR-Z7U to shoot and edit in HD while still doing some work in SD. I do maybe two or three 40 minute videos per year and some other shorter projects. I edit mainly for friends and family....not as a business. Here are the upgrades which I will be doing:
    1. Add 6 GB Ram to the already 2 GB's for a total of 8 1GB chips
    2. Install a Decklink HD Extreme card
These is where I need advice:
    STORAGE...
I am reading lots about external hard drives for editing. I am assuming that FCP would be on the operating system drive and the scratch disk(s) would be firewire (800) drive(s). I also read somewhere that Time Machine is not designed to back up video editing machines. I do not know if that is true with the smaller amount of work that I do. That would probably change how my storage is set up if Time Machine will not be backing up my files.
Overall I am a recreational editor and but would like a system that is current for editing in High Defintion (and I guess Standard Definition at times.)
Any advice would be much appreciated and I am really looking forward to the "Mac Experience"
    Thanks
    Kirk

Thanks for that Nick and Jerry.
I now think that the external hard drive posts that I was looking at were for machines that did not have the capability of adding internal hard drives.
I actually have ordered a 1TB Samsung HD103UJ SATA2 32M (as per the Barefeats tests). Hoping that it would be a suitable internal dive.
For the small amount of editing I do I am guessing that doing a raid would not be all that necessary.
And Nick, I do not think that I was looking for a bootable drive for Time Machine, just something that has a copy of my video clips from my different projects in case I have some sort of hard drive incident. I understand how running Time Machine during editing would not be a good idea, but would it be ok to use it to back up my video files if I just ran it each night after editing. I am taking it that FCP has an auto save feature also for my projects backups.
I had actually already ordered a Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 3.5-Inch Hard Drive for the time machine drive. Should I be getting a firewire drive for that instead of USB?
This is a brave new journey.....but I am really enjoying it.
    Thanks agian
