I need help in setting up a wireless connection

I need help in setting up a wireless connection.
I have a 2005 iMac G5 and currently I am using a Qwest DSL Modem with a Belkin router.
Qwest suggested that I buy a new wireless modem/router. It may be the Motorola 3347 or another wireless modem. I am worried about security when on the internet and have read about changing the SSID password and use the WPA for encryption. All of this is a mystery to me.
Also, I would like to buy from Directv the Linksys wireless adapter to use on my HD-DVR receiver to get their “On Demand Movies.”
My question is, does my iMac G5 have all of the security I need to use a wireless modem, and with the Linksys adapter can I view my photos or DVD’s in iMovie wirelessly to my TV in the living room?
I am concerned about security with a wireless setup, but it seems that all of the new TV’s have the ability to have a wireless connection to the internet.
Any suggestions would help me.
Thanks,
DaisyMay

  • Need help with setting up a PPTP connection

    Hello all,
    I am having trouble setting up a PPTP connection in Mac OS X "Snow Leopard". The ISP has provided the following info:
    — Protocol: PPTP
    — Login
    — Password
    — IP Address
    — Subnet mask
    — Default Gateway
    — IP Address of the VPN Server
    I am using the Airport Express as rounter, so here's what I entered in the Airport Utility on the Internet tab:
    Connection: Ethernet
    IP Address (as provided)
    Subnet mask (as provided)
    Router address (from Default Gateway)
    Then I went to Connections, and created a new PPTP connection, setting the properties of the latter as follows:
    VPN Server (as provided)
    Account name (from Login)
    Authenrification->Password (from Password)
    and chose "Send all traffic over VPN connection".
    The Airport is reported to have connected successfully, but the specified VPN Serverd does not ping, and when I try to connect via PPTP, an error is displayed saying that the PPTP-VPN server did not respond. Playing with different Encryption types did not help.
    This same connection, when set up on a Windows machine, works well so I think I must have goofed with the Mac OS X settings. Could you help me find out what I could have done wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Anton

    {quote}You do have more network devices, at least a dsl or cable modem and maybe a switch connected to it. Are your PC and the AX connected to the same modem/switch?{quote}
    No. There's only the Ethernet cable leading to some central (building-wide, or even wider) device. It was routed to my friend's apartment by the ISP people.
    {quote}It's a bit uncommon to manually set the IP address within the TCP/IP section of the VPN network settings like you did. That's usually set to automatically get an IP via PPP... Please try a quick test using PPP instead.{quote}
    Having the AX using DHCP and VPN using PPP makes part of the ISP settings unnecessary... Hmmm. Anyway, I did try PPP in VPN connection settings, to no avail. Alas.
    {quote}It's also suspicious that you cannot open a connection to port 1723 with the telnet command. Are you sure the VPN type is PPTP and not LT2P over ipsec?{quote}
    Yes, I am sure. The ISP's support confirmed it over the phone. Also they said they hadn't been able to set up any Mac with their network, but I am loth to believe the latter statement. And I clearly remember it was PPTP (not LT2P) in the Windows settings.
    {quote}lease verify the IP settings on your PC...{quote}
    OK, will do this Wednesday. Also I'll take a closer look at the VPN settings.
    {quote}So your PC is on the same network and the VPN works from there? Is the PC using 3rd party VPN software or the built-in software?{quote}
    No other clients, just a VPN connection configured using Windows built-in tools.
    Anton
    EDIT:
    {quote}'m assuming the Mac gets an IP in the 10.x range and gets online OK right? {quote}
    The AX is saying it's connected but there's no internet. This ISP is providing access to the internet through that VPN. The same AX works well with my MacBook at home, although I am using PPPoE.

  • Purchased extreme to replace modem/router DSL used telephone cord need help with set up

    Prior to purchasing Airport Extreme had a standard modem/ wireless router from ATT for DSL. I have two macbooks both dropped connections while online with older modem.
    Airport Extreme purchased to correct connection issues I need help with set up. The older modem just used telephone cord. I tried to use telephone with extreme it did not work.
    How do I get extreme to work as the modem and router ?

    How do I get extreme to work as the modem and router ?
    you can't. the extreme is only a router. you need a separate modem (or disable the wireless part of your old router and use it as a modem - if that's possible).

  • Need help w/ setting up ports to run a server for America's Army

    Need help w/ setting up ports to run a server for America's Army. I read wat u need to change the ports but i dont understand wat to put. here is wat the site says
    Q: How do I run my own server?
    A: Quick and dirty server info:
    1. Edit RunServer.bat to change the map.
    2. Run RunServer.bat
    Or:
    server.exe LAN MAPNAME.aao (Host a LAN game)
    server.exe global MAPNAME.aao (Host a Public game)
    Also: When you create a server setup and want to allow other users to join your server, you need make sure the following ports are open for outgoing and incoming traffic in your firewall: 1716 (UDP), 1717 (UDP), 20025-20045 (TCP), and 20047 (TCP). Failure to open these ports will prevent the server from accepting connections from other players or prevent other players from being able to see your server online.
    There are several settings that also need to be defined in your server configuration INI file (in the Windows version, these files are located in “My Documents\America’s Army Server Settings\{settings file name}.ini”).
    [Engine.GameEngine]
    ServerActors=Andromeda.AndromedaMBS
    [Andromeda.Andromeda]
    GameServerIp=
    Make sure that you set the actual IP address of the America’s Army Server under GameServerIp= (for example, “GameServerIp=000.000.000.000”). The supplied address must be your actual internet IP address, if this is left blank or you supply the IP address for your internal network (such as 192.168.0.x), your server will not be able to accept connections from the internet.
    If your server.ini file contains the setting shown below, please change the QueryPort setting to 20025. This setting can also be removed, as the default setting is port 20025.
    [Andromeda.AndromedaMBS]
    QueryPort=20025
    Punkbuster user fix correction.
    If [Engine.GameEngine] block has been changed to read as below:
    [Engine.GameEngine]
    ServerActors=IPDrv.AndromedaMBS
    Please add the following block to your INI file:
    [IpDrv.AndromedaMBS]
    QueryPort=20025

    Your images are not stored in the catalog. They are stored in folders on your computer. If you imported images that were already on your computer using the "Add" Option they are still in that same folder. If you imported images from your camera then they are in the folders that you specified when you imported. The catalog points to those images wherever they are located, and records all of the adjustments that you make to the image. When you send an image to Photoshop for further editing and save that image in Photoshop, it is normally saved back in the same folder as the original image.
    Images are not "saved" in Lightroom. The basic default workflow in Lightroom is to store all of the adjustments in the catalog, leaving the original image completely unmodified. The catalog becomes the central controlling mechanism. It is a database that contains pointers to where the images are located and a record of all adjustments made to those images using Lightroom. Properly managed, you only have those original master files and secondary files for the ones that you have sent to Photoshop for further adjustment. When you want to provide a copy for someone else, you use the export dialogue for that purpose. I often export JPEG images to share with others or to post on the web. After I have usedthe JPEG for its intended purpose I delete it.

  • Downloaded Epsom printer app need help to set printer up on iPad 3

    Need help to set up Epsom printer to ipad3 downloaded Epsom app can find the printer but don't know where to set up

    It's Epson, not epsom.  Epsom refers to epsom salt (magnesium sulfate).
    ... Anyway, iPads don't have printers directly set up.  You might interface with a printer over a WiFi.  That could be done either using Apple's AirPrint (if the printer is new enough) or maybe you have Epson's iPrint utility.
    If you have the iPrint utility, you simply open the utility, click the "maintenance" button in the lower left, and select the "Printer" on the top and set it up there.

  • NEED HELP TO SET UP SMALL NETWORK - WIRELESS SIGNAL FROM NOVATEL U760 USB

    Hello -
    I need help setting up a small network in my new home in Florida, which has no wired broadband capability - not cable, not dsl. My options are satellite (which I'd like to avoid) or wireless broadband via Millenicom (or now Virgin Mobile) using their Novatel U760 USB stick.
    Here are the network components - someone please tell me how to set this up:
    PC #1 (has wireless card, but I've connected it by ethernet to the router)
    PC #2 (no wireless card; connected via ethernet to router)
    MACBOOK, 1 1/2 years old (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs RAM), running OS 10.58, connected wirelessly to router.
    AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION, Model A1143.
    I'm not thrilled about using a wireless 3G signal as my primary one, (sprint network, claims 600 - 1400 kbps speed), but it costs 1/2 to 1/3 of what a slightly faster satellite signal would.
    I have not ordered this service yet. Before I do, I'd like a clear understanding that I can, in fact, set up my simple network, which I'd probably do the same as it's now configured with cable broadband - both PC's plug via
    ethernet into the Airport Extreme router, the MacBook connects wirelessly - AND,
    my question is this:
    Can I plug the wireless card - a Novatel U760 USB-stick device - straight into that USB slot in the Airport Extreme base station and will it automatically recognize that device?
    Or, do I have to plug it into the MacBook and somehow share that wireless signal between the 2 PC's (only 1 of which has a wireless card, so I'd have to get a card for PC #2)?
    And help anyone can provide will be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Em

    from the Airport FAQ #14:
    "Question: Can I connect my Soundsticks or other USB speakers to AirPort Express?
    Answer: No. The USB port is for connecting a printer, not for other devices."
    Im assuming other devices include USB modems.
    So, I would say your cheaper route would be to get a second wireless card and just share your internet connection from one of your PC.

  • Already have wireless network, need help for set up of time capsule for wired backup only.

    Hello all -
    I have a time capsule that plugs into wall and used a wireless network to back up computer.  It would always mess up internet afterwards so I would unplug the time capsule and reset internet until the next back up.  my time capsule now will not link into my computer. It just flashes amber.  Spoke with apple and was told to come on here and ask for help for setting up time capsule for a wired backup only and to mention that I have a wireless network.
    Hope any of this makes sense.
    Thank You!!

    Spoke with apple and was told to come on here and ask for help
    Really?  The paid professionals at Apple told you to post on a forum where users.....just like you....are trying to answer questions?  We'll try to help, though.
    For starters, please tell us the make and model of the modem/router that you have now that is providing your wireless network.

  • Need help with setting up Internet sharing to PS3

    Hey, so I am trying to use my Macbook as a wired router to my PS3 (My Macbook is on my wireless Linksys router and I have the cable needed to create a wired connection from my Macbook to my PS3. I had this setup working once before after getting a specific set of numbers from a google search but can't seem to find that page anymore. I've only been able to find threads on creating a wireless connection. So here is my problem. From system prefs, I am entering into my PS3 all the numbers my Macbook is giving me from system prefs (my IP address, default router, subnet mask, and DNS servers). But ever time I run an internet connection test I get DNS Error 80710102. If someone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

    Really?? I know this problem was solved before on the Apple message boards but I've been searching for it for quite some time and have yet to find that thread. Can someone help me with this??

  • Need help with set-up process

    Hi there, I am not tech expert hence I would require some help and clarifications. I bought an airport express recently. I own a Acer Netbook running on Windows Vista, iPad wireless version and a iPhone 3Gs.
    My purpose of buying the airport express was to create another wireless network and because I travel, I would like to use the airport express to allow my iPad and iPhone to connect wirelessly as most of the hotels only provide me with an Ethernet cable.
    Questions are....
    1) How do I do the initial set up? I cannot seem to set up my airport express using my netbook. It can't seem to detect. I have followed the following instructions.
    - Install the airport express utility.
    - Plug the airport express for power.
    - Open the utility, it has detected the base station.
    - Selected the option on setting up a wireless network.
    - It configured on its own.
    However, it doesnt work now, what do I do? Anybody who has simpler instructions for a noob like me?
    Also, once I am done with this initial set up and when I go overseas, is it as simple as plugging in their ethernet cable into my airport express and I can connect my ipad and iphone wirelessly?

    Welcome to the discussions!

    +1) How do I do the initial set up? It can't seem to detect.+
    The AirPort Express is broadcasting a default wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You need to log on to this wireless network on your PC first, then open AirPort Utility to configure the device.
    Any Windows box is going to have issues with the Windows firewall blocking an attempted connection or your anti-virus software may be doing the same thing. You may need to turn both of these off in order to establish a connection between AirPort Utility and the AirPort Express.
    You might also try to connect an ethernet cable directly from the computer to the AirPort Express.
    *Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup*
    *Click the Base Station tab* below the row of icons
    Name your Express, assign a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    *Click the Wireless tab*
    Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name = Your choice
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    Channel = Automatic
    Security = WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password = Your choice
    Confirm Password
    *Click the Internet icon*
    Connect Using = Ethernet
    Connection Sharing = Off Bridge Mode
    *Update to save settings*
    When you are at the hotel, connect an ethernet cable from the hotel's jack to the AirPort Express and power up the Express. Open your browser and hotel's log in page will appear so that you can agree to terms and pay the fees.
