I need help on final cut express hd

hello
I recently upgraded from imovie to final cut express, and i have no clue how to cut out scenes that i dont want!! i'm making a mountain biking movie and theres lots of scences that turned out bad that i want to cut out please help me learn how to cut scenes!!

Welcome to the family, glad you came.
There is a specific forum for FCE, back up one or two forums or try Home and you will find it in the FC area. FCE is a very powerful editing platform and it doesn't work anything like iMovie did.
Do yourself a big favor and take the time to run the tutorials. You will learn how to trim your clips and place them in the timeline with transisions. Each of your clips can be trimmed by dragging the in and out points around. It's a blast.
You will need lots of patience as you move from iMovie into the sophistication and creative flexibility of FCE. All of that creativity requires careful attention and you must learn how to talk to the application. It's not particularly difficult, it's just that there are so many different ways to do even the most basic things.

I recently bought a mac mini and I wanted to transfer final cut express 4 from my macbook pro.
Is there any way I can buy another serial number without having to purchase the software again? I already have it on a disk.

Is there a free vignette plug in for final cut express 4?

Thanks I tried it again and it seems to be working but I crashed like once or twice when viewing the footage. But after starting it up again it is working fine it is jsut that the footage has these white flashes in it when playing back sometimes. I am not sure if it is going to crash again or not hopefully it is fixed. I was just using the hdv setting for 1080i60. Im not sure if it was pal or nstc I just used the basic hdv 1080i60 setting. also do you think I should upgrade my ram and memory? Would that help moving it up from a 1 gig to 2 or 4 when working wwith hd footage now?

What acp card do I need to operate Final Cut Express?

I recently installed Final Cut Express and got a message that it cannot work without and ACP card. Which one and where can I buy it?

I should add that with the release of FInal Cut Pro X, both Final Cut Express & Final Cut Studio have been removed from the Apple store & authorized resellers. So there's actually no upgrade to FCE 4 available any more unless you can find a copy that may still be in some store's inventory somewhere, or perhaps on eBay. For example, B&H still seem to have it available, for $79.95 - but that could disappear any time. (On the B&H website, search for "Final Cut Express" then scroll through the list to find the upgrade package.

Help! Final Cut Express crashes on Log and Transfer

Hi,
I am using a Canon Vixia HFS20 (AVCHD) and a Mac Book Pro (running snow leopard) , with a 1 tb My Book as scratch disk.
I have upgraded the software.
In Easy Setup, I selected AVCHD 1920x1080i60, after checking the camera and seeing that it is recording with 60i.
Log and Transfer opens, but then final cut express immediately crashes.
Please advise! Thank you so much,

What happens if you remove the external drive and try a test capture to the MAC directly?
How is the external connected? eg. USB
Is the external formatted to MAC OS Extended?

30p with a Canon XA10 - need help with Final Cut 7 "FIELD DOMINANCE" setting and an explanation of "drop frames". Thank you!!

I shot footage using a Canon XA10 and there are issues with the HD quality not looking as crisp as it should. I am trying to make sure the settings in Final Cut are right. Need help confirming what should be in "Field Dominance" --- have seen discussions about making sure it's set to "none" but I'm confused as to what to do.
Also someone suggested I use "drop frames" to change from 30p to 24p within Final Cut. He couldn't explain how to do it so any input appreciated as well as any thoughts on whether this is a good option to try.

If you're shooting 30p, field dominance should be set to none. Since you need to use log and transfer to bring this material in to fcp, I would assume it would be set correctly automatically. Are you sure you've set the camera properly?
Drop frames will not change 30 p to 24p. Dropframe timecode simply refers to the number assigned to each frame which drops an occasional number (not any frames) so the timecode duration is the actual duration, since 30p videoi is actually 29.97 frames per second which each frame assigned a timecode number.
This is very basic video stuff and requires some basic knowledge of video. Wikipedia is a pretty good resource for much of this stuff plus there are lots of great resources on the web. Look up interlaced and progressive video, 24p and 30p.
And as far as judging quality, you can only get an accurate view of the quality in fcp when you have a video card attached to a video monitor. The viewer and canvas are only an approximation of what the quality is. Minimally, set the canvas or viewer to 100% to get a better approximation of the quality.

Imovie user needs help in final cut!

hi, i am an imovie editor who has made the smart move to final cut pro. but i am confused sometimes on what to do. i am editing a promo video for my school, i have an audio clip that runs the whole promo (voiceover)and i want to cut out a piece of it out. in imovie i would just "split" the audio at the beginning and end, reselect it and delete it. not sure how to do it in final cut. any help would be much appreciated. thanks

To do that same technique in FCP... use the B tool (for razor).
If you hit it once, it will only cut items linked at a certain spot... if you hit it twice it will cut the whole timeline.
Then... use the del key over by HOME and the media on the timeline will close when you delete the selected material. If you just want to LIFE out the section and leave the hole... use the delete key by the += key.

Need Help Installing Final Cut Studio Version 2.0.1 on Macbook Pro

I am trying to install an old version of Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Studio Version 2.0.1) on my macbook pro (OS X Mountain Lion). When I tried to install it, it said, "power pc applications not supported on this computer". I was told to "uninstall" OS X on my computer, install Final Cut Studio, and reinstall OS X Mountain Lion again. Is this true? If so, how do I do this?

There is a "bug" in the installer application of Final Cut Studio Pro 2 that will fail to work in Lion or Mt. Lion; it will work successfully in Snow Leopard and a subsequent upgrade to Lion or Mt. Lion after the successful installation of FCSP2 will continue to work.
Once Mt. Lion is installed you can use one of these two methods to install FCSP2:

Help needed for a Final Cut Express project Compression

Hi guys,
This is my first post as I usually find answers to all my questions reading through the various thread. I just haven't found an answer to my last pb yet hence the new topic. Hope you guys can help.
I have got this very simple slideshow that I need to burn onto DVD. The issue is that it's LONG. It's an hour and 17 minutes and i have no idea what is the best way to compress/export this so I can burn this on a single layer DVD.
I tried various options and it suddenly stops because I "only" have 13GB of free space on my macbook. 13GB!!!! How will this ever fit on a DVD? and this is with medium quality...
please help!

Woke up this morning and the burning never started because the file was too big. I exported the file from FCE and it was 16GB! iDVD never managed to fit it in my single layer DVD. Am I using iDD correctly?
I am thinking I need to compress this further on FCE right? I don't understand why such a simple movie (although very long) can take so much space. It's only about 900MB of JPGs and 120MB of music. I don't want to bring the quality down to "low" because it won't look good.
So far, I have been exporting using quicktime conversions and I tried the following formats: tried exporting in AVI and QuickTime Movie. For the compression type, I tried DVCPRO50-NTSC on medium quality (with AVI) and Photo-JPG & DVCPRO50-NTSC again (with QuickTime Movie) both on slightly better than medium quality. Results all were well above 10GB.

Help on Final Cut Express/Mpeg StreamClip

Hey, so my camera is a Canon T3i. My Dimensions is 1920 x 1080. 30 FPS. Codecs is H.264, Linear PCM; when shooting a video. When using the Mpeg StreamClip, i formatted/convert the clip into Apple Intermediate Codec, then later import it into FCE, put the clip onto the timeline and has the red line on top. Also before putting the clip onto the timeline, i did the Easy Setup, using the format HD, and used the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. Still I get the red line on top.
I used another format which is the Apple DV/DVCPRO- NTSC. It works on the FCE and i dont need to render, but it has the little black frame on both sides of the video clip.
My question is how can i make my video clip work on FCE without rendering using the format Apple Intermediate Codec when converting on Mpeg StreamClip, because i dont want use the Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC since it doesnt give me the 16:9 screen. The reason is that i want that nice quality look on youtube and i like the full 16:9 screen.

You shouldn't be getting the render line so you must be doing something wrong.
You are shooting at 30fps and not 60fps?
In Streamclip do this:-
File>Export to QuickTime and select Apple Intermediate Codec.
Do not alter any other settings.
Simply click Make Movie.

Help with Final Cut Express HD?

Please help...if anyone can help me with this problem...
I have installed FCE HD and updated with the new version. I am using WD external hardrives as a scratch for my video files. I can capture the videos fine with no problems, but when I open up the files...
I get a: "Media Performance Warning" box, and it says:
"It is highly recommended that you recapture the media to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback"
I am using 5 WD external harddrives...4 of them use USB and 1 uses Firewire to capture.
Some files don't have a warning while some do... can anyone tell me why this is happening and how can I fix this problem without trying to recapture everything again? Thank You very much!

Firewire verses USB is not though. USB in most cases let you down as a media drive.

I'm trying to time myself do something for a school project and I was wondering if FCP's got like a timer effect or something where I can type in the time I want it to end and put it on my video

no built-in counter overlay per se. but you could use the Effects > Video Filters > Video > Timecode Generator
(and crop of the info you don't want to see)

Final Cut Express 4

I need help with final cut express 4, i was told when when i purchased this software that it would work with final cut pro, i have tried to put my film from final cut pro onto express and it says that the file is too new, what does this mean and can it be fixed? thanks so much

is there no way that i can use them both together? because i was told by a man who sold me express that i could use both together. For example i could do work on my university macs and then bring it home and work on it at home.

Having trouble reinstalling Final Cut Express after uninstall with FCS remover.
