I need help opening Appleworks documents

I just got a new iMac and now I can't open any of my Appleworks documents. I have Office for Mac, but I have about 8 years of Appleworks documents that I need to open and read/print. How can I do this?

I am having the same problem. Tech 1 told me to drag the Appleworks file from my old laptop to my new one (MacBook Pro). Worked for a day or so and then stopped. Tech 2 told me to re-install Appleworks from my old laptop's software. Appleworks was not included as a separate file; instead was included except in Bundled Software. I tried to install Bundled Software on my new laptop and got a message stating I could not do that. Tech 3 told me I needed to purchase iworks to run convert the Appleworks files. I downloaded iworks free for 30 days and tried to open my Appleworks docs. Nope. Three techs have struck out.

i cannot open any pdf documents and i was able to earlier in the day, i noticed i have adobe reader X (11.0.03) which is differnt from my other machine that pdf's still work on and it has adobe reader X Ver 10.1.7

The license agreement has probably "frozen" and won't open with Reader.
Go to: C/Program Files/Adobe/Reader 11.0/Reader and double click the eula.exe file.
Accept the agreement and Reader should open fine.

Please type chrome://plugins in the Chrome address bar. Then, disable 'Chrome PDF Viewer' and enable 'Adobe Reader' plug-in as shown in the screenshot below:
Now, close the Plug-ins tab and restart Chrome.

Functionality of Pages and Numbers has little to do with whether it's runnong on Snow Leopard or Lion. Either way, if they open an AppleWorks document in SL, they'll open it in Lion. Of course, you have to understand that certain file types - particularly, AppleWorks databases - cannot be opened with anything other than AppleWorks, so you'll need to convert them with AppleWorks before upgrading to Lion.

Need help opening old Appleworks file

Hi all I have been searching the forums and seem to come up with well lets say I'm screwed,,,I am trying to help out my uncle who had a mac back in the day and had made some what appears to be some appleworks documents that I cant open,the documents are on floppies which I was able to pull some pictures off and convert them to .jpeg's but I cant open the other files,,,I have tried OpenOffice and Office for Macs but no luck,,,can anyone help with this or tell me how to do this,,I'm not real good with Macs seeing i've been only using one for 6mths ,,,,

You could use AppleWorks 6 in OS X or AppleWorks 5 in Classic to open the files. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4.
If there are just a few files (less than 10), you can e-mail them to me & I will convert them (to text, Word, Excel, PDF) & send them back.

Need Help Opening a Network Document in Forms 6i

Hello,
I am trying to launch a network document from Forms 6i running in Oracle Applications 11.5.10.
I have a column in on a form that shows document locations and I am having the user double click on the column in order to lauch the document. I am using the FND_UTILITIES.OPEN_URL package. This works great for web sites but not for internal network documents.
Examples.
Works Fine:
FND_UTILITIES.OPEN_URL ('HTTP://WWW.ORACLE.COM',_blank)
Does Not Work
FND_UTILITIES.OPEN_URL ('\\netwin\ERP\Documents\Setups.doc',_blank)
Now if I open an Internet Explorer window and paste the not working address into it it does pull up the document so I know the address is valid.

I have found a solution to this I stopped using FND_UTILITIES.OPEN_URL and started using WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT.
New working call to this procedure is:
WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT('file://'||v_url,'_blank');
Where v_url is the location of the network document
e.x. \\netwin\ERP\Documents\Setups.doc
When the window opens it will ask the user if the want to Open Save or Cancel if they press Open the Document is displayed.

I had an old iMac blueberry with OS 9.2 using appleworks. I just bought a MACBOOK and i got iWORK and MS OFFICE 2004 installed on it. How can i get my appleworks files to open up on my new MACBOOK.

AppleWorks 6 is a "package" that contains both a Classic (Mac OS 9) application and an OS X application. The rest of what's essential to AppleWorks 6's operation is included in the other items inside the AppleWorks 6 folder. AppleWorks will generate all needed items outside this folder when it is run.
The OS X application will operate (and operate well) on the intel based Macs using Rosetta, which is included with these machines. AW 6.2.4 and AW 6.2.9 (IN Mac OS 9, the version numbers on the splash screen and in About AppleWorks for these two are 6.2.3 and 6.2.8) are the most stable and least error prone in OS X; update before or after the transfer if you have earlier versions.
Remember also that your AppleWorks license allows for only one copy to be installed on a computer. If you want to continue to use AppleWorks on the G3 iMac, you'll need to purchase a retail copy to install on the MacBook.

Cannot open Appleworks documents

Hi,
I hope this is an easy fix. I clicked on the Appleworks icon in the dock and it disappeared. Went to the MacIntosh HD icon and clicked. Clicked on documents, and I see each on each appleworks icon, beside the titled document, a symbol similar to the "previous page/next page" box in the upper left corner of the screen. When I click on the appleworks icon to open the document, I get the message "there is no default application to open the document "(title of the document).cwk". Wants me to choose another application. Don't know what that means. Tried to update appleworks and "updater was unable to find an installation of appleworks to update in the specific update location". Don't know how appleworks suddenly became inacessible.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

The only things that should be in Applications > AppleWorks 6 should be items that the AppleWorks installer put there when AppleWorks was installed on your hard drive (most likely at the factory, since yours is an eMac).

All are folders, except for AppleWorks 6 (the application package) and AppleWorks Web Site (a web address document). They'll be listed in a different order than here.
Anything else in the AppleWorks 6 folder is likely something that you, or another user, has put there. Storing user's files in an application folder is generally a bad idea. User's files tend to be files that are moved around and occasionally deleted. Opening an Applcation's folder to delete anything opens the possibility of accidently deleting anything else in the folder, including the application itself. That may be what's happened here.
If AppleWorks has indeed been dleted from your hard drive, the next step is to reinstall it, then update the installed version to AW 6.2.9. Installation is done from the original Install disk(s) that came with your eMac. Instructions on doing that can be found in a couple of documents in Apple's Knowledge Base. You'll find links to both in this post by Peggy.

Can iWorks open an AppleWorks word processing document?
Can iWorks open an AppleWorks database? Does it import it into an iWorks spreadsheet?
I want to open my AppleWorks-based mail merge documents without having to convert them to Microsoft Office.

The iWork (no 's') applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. If you still have access to AppleWorks you can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object.
There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Pages can merge from an Numbers spreadsheet or AddressBook. Since copying & pasting from database to spreadsheet won't copy & paste the column titles, you will need to enter them manually & then define that row as a header row in Numbers in order to use it for merging with Pages.
Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I recommend using PICT for best results.

Will iWork open Appleworks documents

I am hoping to transfer all my Appleworks documents from my G4 Cube running 10.4.11 onto a new iMac running Leopard, onto which I am going to install iWork 08.
I have read many comments centred around this subject, but I'm still a little confused.
The version of Appleworks on the cube is 6.2.4 which is an update from my CD version 6.0.4.
Having transferred my documents onto the iMac, do I need to reload Appleworks, or will the iWork open these documents without Appleworks being loaded?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

It depends on what type of AppleWorks documents you have.
The three iWork applications, Pages, Keynote and Numbers will open AppleWorks 6 word processing, presentation and spreadsheet documents respectively.
If you have AppleWorks drawing or paint documents you will need AppleWorks or one of the few third party applications capable of opening those types. If you have AppleWorks database documents, you will need AppleWorks; no other application can open these directly.

ClarisWorks opens AppleWorks documents - how to fix this?

I have both AppleWorks and CarisWorks for Mac OS 9.2.2. I want AppleWorks to open my documents when I double click on them, but instead it opens ClarisWorks. All of those documents were created in AppleWorks before I wiped my system clean. Is there something I can set in Claris Works to not assoscaite files or something?

There is no need to have two versions of AppleWorks 6 installed. Although I do for a couple of reasons, it's not something I recommend for the average user. Beginning with OS X support in AppleWorks 6.2, the application is actually a package & has both Classic & OS X versions in one. The one for the system you are running at the time will launch, you don't have to do anything special. One package contains 6.2.3 & 6.2.4, another contains 6.2.8 & 6.2.9.
As I said before, your Mac should try to open the files with the newest version, 6.2.8/6.2.9, but ClarisWorks 1 is so old. Even though I do occasionally use Classic, I don't remember enough about OS 9 to advise on setting the default program for opening files. I can understand keeping ClarisWorks/AppleWorks 5 but what does ClarisWorks 1 have that you need?

"Some users have reported" is a mild way to put it. To answer your question "or is the software just not as good as 4.3?" more directly... it's only better in transparency between platforms. Oh, one other improvement- it DOES run faster, but then of course it would since it's so much more lightweight.
