I need Help Setting Up Wireless Router WRT54G on NTL

Hi, I've managed to setup a few home wireless networks in my time but I'm having problems with this. My gf's ISP is NTL and it is connected via a cable modem (rather than the set top). I registered my laptop using the installation software and the internet connection is working fine. I attempted to setup the router and I could connect to it, however I could not connect to the internet through the router. Previously with other routers I found an option where you could input the user/pass so that the router was automatically connected to the service, but I could not find this option. Does anyone who has setup this wireless router with an NTL setup / or anyone at all have any idea how I go about setting it all up?
Thanks in advance

I also found this thread which helps by showing when to clone the MAC address.
Using run cmd from XP's start menu and typing ipconfig /all will show the MAC address of your machine's NIC card, if you need it.

  • Need Help setting up wireless router

Hi, ive spent the week on the phone trying to reach all the various technical support people to help me, and getting no where, i wait forever and then get dropped.
I just got time warner cable in NYC (queens) and the modem and internet surfing works fine if I use a USB cable from the modem to my computer, the problem is the ethernet doesnt work, and I dont have drivers for ethernet, but im more interested in setting up wireless from the modem, to the wireless router to my computer with the wireless card.
I accidently installed some kind of microsoft tcp/ip thingy when surfing around my computer trying to fix this and now I cant use the wireless router and card.
I dont want to spend hours on the phone in a tech support message maze, so please help me thru PM.

Hi Mark, first off let me know are you able to go online directly with the modem, if computer is connected directly to the ethernet port of modem? if not, i think ethernet port of the modem is not working or may be it's defective or drivers for ethernet adapter is not installed , as you've mentioned you can able to go online with the USB cable, once computer is connnected directly to the USB port of modem...unless and untill ethernet port on the modem is not working you won't be able to configure the wireless router... router doesn't have USB port on it... anyways connect modem to the ethernet port of the  router >> computer (wireless), reset the router back to factory default settings by pressing reset button on the back panel of the router... release the reset button after 30 seconds, power cycle the network by unplugging power cable of the modem and router... wait for couple of minutes and power up the modem first and wait for few seconds once modem is rebooted, after that power up the router, check the light status power, WLAN and internet light on the router should be on... try connecting to "linksys" wireless n/w from wireless pc...check whether it works or not and let me know...

  • Need help setting up wireless on G5 tower

I recently inherited a G5 tower and I am trying to set it up with my existing wireless connection. I currently have a D-link router that works for my laptop.
I am 99% sure that the G5 tower has Airport. It has an airport icon on the top of the screen, and I can turn it on/off. Also, under About This Mac -> More Info it shows an airport extreme card.
After setting up the computer, I was dissapointed to see that it didn't pick up a wireless signal. It is about 25-30ft from the wireless router. I bought an antenna because I thought it would fix the problem, but it still doesn't find any networks.
Am I missing something?? I am new to Macs so maybe I have to type in the network name or something? I would think it would just show up as an option when I open Internet Connect. Please help! I have been trying to figure this out for weeks and it is driving me crazy.

  • Need help setting up wireless internet network

I have a 1 GHz iMac G4 (purchased in 2003) that has a dsl connection to the internet via an ethernet cable and the dsl modem that was provided by my internet service (earthlink). My friend recently gave me her imac - same model. I've given it to my son for his room and would like to set up a wireless network so I can get his computer on the internet too.
I've read enough here to figure out that our computers are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. But what other equipment do I need? How many Airport Extreme cards? an AirPort station?, a router? I'm clueless but very good at following instructions. So if there is an FAQ somewhere that would be helpful too.
    Thanks!

Sarah, Welcome to the discussion area!
You need a wireless router. You can use one of Apple's or a 3rd party wireless router.
You can connect one of the iMacs to the router via Ethernet if you want. Or you can add AirPort Extreme cards to both iMacs.

  • Need Help: Trouble with Wireless Router Connection on MBP

Hi all.  I just bought a MacBook Pro (my first Mac ever) and love, love, love it.  However, one glitch is driving me crazy.  I do *NOT* have an airport but I connect to my cable modem through my netgear wireless router.  When my MacBook Pro goes into sleep mode, I lose the connection to the wireless router.  I have to go unplug the router to reboot it for the MBP to see it again.  I think it has something to do with how it is assigning the IP address.  Has anyone else seen this issue?  Know how to solve it?  Thanks so much.

  • I need help setting up wireless system

I am trying to set up a wireless system for my laptop and am new to this and don't know if I can do what I want with what I have.  I would like to have wireless internet access in my home so I can surf the net in different rooms and on the porch.  I only have one laptop.  I also would like to set up my printer wireless.  This is what I was sold when I bought my computer and was told that this is what I needed.  Also, My internet service is DSL Highspeed Light thru my telepone coop.
Computer:   Gateway MT6821 Laptop with Vista operating system
     Printer:        HP Officejet 6310 All-in-One
Router:         Linksys WRT54GS (Wireless G Broadband Router w/ Speedbooster)
Print Server: D-Link DPR-1260 (Multifunction Rangebooster G USB Print Server)
I have hooked up the router and run the install program.  After reading some on this forum one question I have is can I run wireless without a pc wired to the router?  Any help will be appreciated by a novice.             Thanks

When I bought the Gateway laptop I was told that I didn't need a wireless card as one was already installed.  I was under the impression that after hooking up the router and running the install I could unplug the internet (ethernet) cable from the laptop and surf the net wirelessly, but that is not the case.  After running the installation I got a message that installation was complete and the WRT54GS shows as installed under my "network".  Is there anything I need to do, check, change, or add to make this work?

  • Need help setting up wireless file sharing

We have 3 iPhones, 3 iPads, and 2 iPod touch devices. We recently purchased the Apple air port extreme, air port express, apple tv, and a western digital external hard drive my book (for Mac) 2t. I need to know how to get photos from my phone to the hard drive wirelessly. My husband and I each have 1,200 photos on our phones we would like to back up to the hard drive. The air port app shows we have a hard drive connected, but we can't figure out how to move photos to it. Please help!

In windows when you do "map network drive" you need to enter "\\server\share" (without quotes).
In Vista, go to the Windows Button > Computer. The "map network drive" option is in the bar in the top of the window. You may need to enlarge the window or click on the little expand arrow to see it.
smb://server is used when you're connecting to a windows share from the MacOS.

  • I need help choosing a wireless router (Networking Noob)

Okay, I am very new to wireless networking.
I basically want to replace my current wired DSL modem with a wireless modem/router that I can still wire my main PC up to via Ethernet, and route a wireless connection to a laptop, and possibly some other devices (possibly a Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, TV, and other similar devices).
I have been trying to find out if the E-Series from Cisco actually act as a modem as well as a router but can't seem to find the information.
I do wish to have recent technology, but don't want to pay a fortune, so if there is a list of Linksys modem router combos you can give me then I can go research them further.
If there is anything else you think I might need to consider, I'm all ears
Thanks so much.  Hopefully I won't be a newbie for much longer on this subject.

The E series routers are ethernet routers. They don't have modems integrated.
The Linksys devices with integrated modem are the WAG models, e.g. the WAG320N.
However, I would rather recommend a ethernet router and a standalone DSL modem. DSL technologies evolves pretty quickly and it's possible that the modem you buy today won't handle the internet speeds in two years.
In addition, except for the latest WAG models (which can be configured as ethernet router on the first LAN port, i.e. "loosing" one of the four ethernet port) the DSL routers are generally only for use with DSL. If you decide anytime soon to switch to cable or satellite or FTTH you will need a new modem again.
On the other hand, an ethernet router may be good for longer depending on your requirement. It works with any kind of access technology DSL, cable, etc. as long as you have a modem.
Thus, my general advice is to get a standalone cheap modem and a separate ethernet router. Ask you ISP for the modem. Often, ISPs offer a simple modem for free or you get one "rented" for free. This way you have the guarantee that the modem works fine with their network.
You also have a much greater variety of wireless routers to choose from.

  • Need help Setting up Multiple Static Ip , 1 for each port of the fios router

Need help Setting up multiple Static Ip on my fios router
I have been trying to figure out how to set up multiple ip in my fios router.
However I kind of managed how to set up multiple static ip However the way I want it is for each port of my router to have an external ip signed to it. ( like 4 different modem in 1 )
Verizon gave me 5 static ip but they can not help me how to set it up.
Have anyone here done more then one static ip on different ports? I assume that the process will be the after the second static ip.

You want to set up Static Nat. You will not assign the IP to a port, but rather to a local machine. Figure out what machines you want your IP's to go to. Under the firewall section you will see static nat. Pick the machine you want and enter one of the IP's you were assigned.

  • I need to limit the range of my wireless router WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.

I need to limit the range of my wireless router   WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.  I don't want to put on a password if I can avoid it.   Thanks for you advice in advance.  Milwaukie

Trying to confine a wireless signal to your home is not a practical solution to security concerns.  The distance that a wireless signal will travel is mainly limited by the receiving antena and sensitivity of the receiver.  An ordinary wireless receiver can probably pick up your signal for 200 to 1000 feet.  A great receiver could probably pick up your signal from a mile or more.  The best alternatives are:
    a) convert your system to a wired system, or,
    b) encrypt your wireless using a good encryption method (WPA or preferably WPA2) and use a strong password.

  • Lost IP access to Linksys wireless router WRT54GS v.4. How to restore?

Apologies for the long post and multiple questions. If you can answer at least one of them, I will be appreciative!
While attempting to set-up wireless networking between my new Westell Model 6100G and Linksys wireless router WRT54GS v.4 (with most recent upgraded firmware), I lost access to the Linksys. When I hooked up the Linksys again via Ethernet to my XP PC with the modem no longer connected, I was unable to access it via IP 192.168.1.1. All I get is a blank web browser page (with the usual “diagnose, etc.” button). I assumed this is because the IP address conflicts with IP for the Westell, but I am also concerned if it is hardware failure. I have tried resetting the router, but no luck. I have tried ipconfig /all which gave me a different ip address. But when I tried to access the Linksys using this ip address, I was unsuccessful. I hooked up the router to a different pc with no present Internet access and tried IP 192.168.1.1, but still no luck. Trying the IP I got from ipconfig /all at this new pc failed as well.
Is there a chance I have a hardware failure? I had access last night when the linksys was at its original location (I only checked it once before turning in), but I seem to have lost access ever since I moved it closer to my desk and to a new electrical outlet. When turned on, the Linksys has green lights in the right places, so it looks fine, but, again, no access via IP.
If it’s not hardware failure, how do I find out what IP address the Linksys actually uses now if it is no longer 192.168.1.1? Or how do I change it?
Is a WRT54GS v.4 worth the trouble or should I start over and upgrade to a newer router?
Is Linksys the best choice with the Westell 6100G? The configuration procedures seem very complicated compared to my ease of router/modem configuring in the past.

"_when I setup the Westell modem in bridge mode, will I lose my Internet connection?_ "
    Answering my own question: "yes."
I found what looks like a good step-by-step guide to hooking up a Westell 6100 to a Linksys
    router at:
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/vz/4._Hardware#13600
It provides more detail and up-to-date illustrations than Verizon's instructions at
    https://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/Networking/SetUp/QuestionsOne/87126.htm
(which appear to be for an earlier version of the Westell 6100), although they are otherwise similar. The DSLreports faq confirms that Internet and IP access to the modem will be lost during the setup phase. For a "newbie" at such linking, this bit of information is very helpful!
Thank you, Telcoguru, for confirming that I should have followed the instructions exactly from beginning to end before becoming concerned and skipping steps.
I will close this thread and wait for a long lazy day, to try linking the Westell and the Linksys again. If I need to post again, it will hopefully be with more specific questions about specific steps that haven't worked as they should.

  • Linksys Wireless Router: WRT54G Version: 2

I was just curious, since I have been talking to someone about the Linksys Routers and they were saying that WRT54G Versions 3, 4 & 5, all work successfully. Then when I asked him about Version 2, he said that he THINKS that the router will work.
Can someone please give me an answer: Will the Linksys Wireless Router: WRT54G Version: 2 work with a MacBook Pro?!

I get from 3 to 6 Mbps wireless and wired, which is considerably slower than my other Windows-based desktop and notebook over my 30 Mbps cable connection. My Dell notebook and desktop consistently get 15 Mbps wireless and 22 to 28 Mbps wired. Mac OS is relatively new to me, so I haven't had a chance to read as much I need to about optimizing connection speeds. But, I can either fix it by optimizing it, or perhaps Apple will come out with a firmware update since some people have been complaining about slow connections speeds and dropping connections.
In my work, I have several computers going at the same time, and for typical Web surfing, I see no difference in speed between the 6 Mps on the Mac and the 15 Mpbs on the Dell---it's really limited anyway by the Web site server. I do notice a difference in download times, but even for very large files, the difference is noticeable but not a problem. And, there has never been a problem streaming video or downloading trailers, etc.
Of course, only five years ago, my cable connection was first 128 Kbps (which was high speed then), then they jumped it up 1 Mpbs, then 10 Mbps, and now 30 Mbps---so the 6 Mbps on the Mac still seems pretty fast to me.
Speed will always be slower over the wireless compared to your Ethernet connection, but once you get speeds in excess of 1 Mbps, you only see the difference in download times, surfing is the same.
