I need help updating my 3rd generation itouch to 4.2

So, I'm trying to update my itouch 3rd gen to 4.2 because its currently still at 3.1.3. I'm getting very frustrated because I will start the update, and each time it starts to backup my info, it will run very quickly for a minute, and then slow to a crawl and then a stop. I dont need it to backup. I have backed up my itouch multiple times already. and then occasionally it will actually download the software quickly, but wont install because it keeps trying to backup again. Can someone please help? I need a certain app but cant get it unless i have updated to 4.0. And I have also updated Itunes, to so im pretty sure that's not the problem. HELP PLEASE.

If your computer is running Windows, try temporarily disabling any antivirus and antispyware utility your system is running. Those can often cause this sort of problem.

You need to update the OSX on your computer. Going higher that 4.1 requires iTunes 10 or higher. iTunes 10 requires OSX 10.5.8 or higher.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

I want to update my 3rd generation iPad to iOS 8 through the OTA update. I have enough space as it requires 5.8GB and I have almost 10 GB. I clicked on download and install. It did download the iOS update file and then it says, "Preparing Update." In that part, it is very slow and suddenly it freezes then reboots my device to apple logo. When it goes back, it still says, "Preparing Update" and then it will freeze again and reboot. I don't know what to do. I want to have iOS 8 so bad. I have enough space and I don't run apps on the background. I have this problem over a day now. I even tried deleting the iOS 8 file and re-download it but same thing happens. Any suggestion or advice? Thanks in advance.

First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.

Can I use a usb data cable from a classic ipod with my 3rd generation iTouch?

I can't find the usb data cable for my 3rd generation iTouch but I have an old cable from my old ipod classic. It appears to be similar but is it electrically identical for syncing and charging or not?

If it looks the same it should be OK. Some older iPods used Firewire so it the cable has an extra connector (more that the dock connector at one end and a USB connector on the other end) do not use it.

I have a 3rd generation iTouch (64GB). Is it worth upgrading to the new nano? I know it doesn't have the space (I currently use 27GB for music), but my battery only lasts 3 days, even if NEVER being used.

You want to "upgrade" from an iPod touch to an iPod nano? The iPod touch is a computing device that runs iOS and third-party apps. The nano (even the newest one) is mostly only a media player. It does not run iOS.
Lithium-based batteries wear out over time and use. You can get it replaced by Apple or a repair shop. Here's info about Apple's service
