I need help updating my iPhone!!

Okay...I have a weird situation here.  I've called my local Apple store and Googled until I'm blue in the face and I cannot find any answers.
Please please please...I beg someone here to help me.
Here's my situation:
I have a MacBook...a very old one that has NEVER been updated.  I know, ignorant on my part, but that's besides the point.
It is running on a very old version of iTunes.  And it's been so long since I've updated my operating system that it wont let me get a newer version of iTunes.
When I tried to plug in my iPhone soon after I got it, I got an error message along the lines of, "This device is not compatable with this version of iTunes."
So...I tried to update iTunes, cant do it, because my OS is so out of date.  I dont even know what OS I'm on.  It's way before Leopard or Mountain Lion or any of that stuff. Whatever came with the MacBook when I got it 4-5 years ago.
My iPhone is STILL running on the same version it had when I got it a year ago. (4.2.6)
Nothing has ever been backed up...simply because I cant.
Now, my question is...
Can I plug my phone into my moms PC?  I dont necessarily care to back up my contacts/pictures up on her iTunes.  I have over 4000 pics on my phone and I'd hate to clog her PC up with all that. I just need to use her iTunes in order to update my phone to the most recent version.
Her computer/iTunes has never been plugged into another phone (she still uses a flip phone). So my iPhone would be the only device that has ever been hooked up to her PC.
What are the risks here, if any?
Is this possible?
Any help is MUCH appreciated.

If the iTunes on your mum's PC is the most up to date you should be fine.
Simply plug the iPhone in, make sure that if you have a keypad lock on that you unlock it. Then when iTunes recognises the iPhone, right click the little picture of the iPhone and press backup.
Once it's done that left click on the little phone icon again and it will bring up a summary page on the right. Click the 'Update' button and let it do its job.
Now when that is done, on the phone just check to see if all your data is still there. If it is you can just delete the back up from your mum's computer by navigating to C:\Users\<your mum's username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync <---- there will be a folder in there called "Backup", just delete that folder.
If it isn't you will need to use a third party app to retrieve the data from the backup because I believe that iOS 6 is incompatible with iOS 4 backups, well at least 5 was anyway.
If you have lost your data on your phone, don't delete the backup data from your mum's computer, I'll help you get it back on your iPhone before you delete it.

If the iPhone was hacked and unlocked via unofficial means, it has become locked again. Insert original SIM in the phone to activate with iTunes.

I need to update my Iphone but I don't know where to begin.  The phone is plugged into my computer, but I
don't know what to do after that.  Thanks for any help!!

Before updating, import all you photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) and back up your contacts (by syncing them with iCloud or another service such as Google, with a supported application such as Outlook or Address Book, or using an app like My Contacts Backup.  Then open iTunes, click on the name of your phone on the left side, go to the Summary tab to the right and click on Check for Update.

    Hi Michela27,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you have content on your iPhone that isn't on your computer, the best thing is to use the advice in this article to transfer it to your new computer before setting up sync:

You've posted to the iTunes Match forum, which your question does not appear to be related to. You'll get better support responses by posting to either the iTunes for Mac or iTunes for Windows forum. Which ever is more appropriate for your situation.

Minimally you need Snow Leopard or greater:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • I recently backed up my iphone to itunes, when after backing up a message showed that I needed to update my iphone. I clicked ok, and after updating, it said I had to restore my phone to its factory settings. I cannot find where it backed up pictures

I recently backed up my iphone to itunes, when after backing up a message showed that I needed to update my iphone. I clicked ok, and after updating, it said I had to restore my phone to its factory settings. I cannot find where it backed up all of my pictures from my phone.

If you backed up the device, all the data is in the backup. Restore the backup.
A better question is why would an intelligent person not copy the pictures from the device to the computer regularly, especially before attempting an update, as the device is designed to be used?
