I need lots of USB ports with New Mac Pro, now what?

because I'm in the audio business I needs lot of USB ports with my Mac Pro. On my current 2008 machine, that's not really an issue, with 5 ports on teh MP itself and I installed some USB hubs over PCIe that give me a total of 13 port. I'm not really sure what is the best way to get that amount on the new MP.
Oh, and I really like the stability of my current set up. Before I went with an external USB Hub that always gave me headaches with ports not being recognized.

The only two things I found so far are:
a/ going back to the external USB hubs, which I find very frustrating to work with, because instable with connection and I would need to add some interface to go from USB to TB (which are also rather expensive at the moment)
b/ use some external PCIe enclosures that are really expensive.
So I havent really found the right solution for my situation. Which makes me hesitant to migrate to new MP at the moment.

I have a belkin 7 adapter for additional usb ports for my mac pro. It worked fine without problems till recently when the message regarding usb port drawing too much power and the computer shuts the port on the mac pro down. The strip comes with its own power supply adapter. The attachments are additional hard drives used as backups and independent data. Other than disconnecting it are there any fixes?

You're getting the message because you're exceeding the available current, probably as a result of bus-powered drives. The power sources for hubs are rather small. Try using drives with their own power supplies.

  • What external harddrives do I need for use with new mac pro?

I just bought a mac pro late 2013 however I got the one with only 256 gigs of storage. I do a lot of video editing and was wondering if my firewire 800 owc hardrives work just as fast or should I upgrade to thunderbolt and usb 3.0 drives? My work flow is usually storing my footage on one drive and my project files on another drive. Would it really make that big of a difference to upgrade? It seems to me that when working in premiere..the actual mac pro is what really matters.

Would thunderbolt drives really make that big of a difference in terms of editing speed?
The model I use to think about this is bottleneck analysis. (A chain is as strong as its weakest link.)
ThunderBolt is really FAST. It is so much faster than the rotating drives that ...
...it does not get in the way at all (But it cannot speed anything up!)
Rotating drives can produce a single burst of data off the platters at about 125 MBytes/sec. FireWire800 is about that speed, so it will not provide much of a bottleneck. Gigabit Ethernet is a little slower, but in that neighborhood.
ThunderBolt-1 has enough bandwidth to support an eight drive enclosure with all drives working simultaneously. But it does not speed anything up.
If you transition to the fastest SSD drives in enclosures, all those numbers change. There, fastest transfer times are near 800 MBytes/sec, and Firewire800 and USB-3 get in your way.

  • Need help with new Mac Pro (2012)

    Hi for everyone!
Few days ago, I bought a new Mac Pro (Mid 2012) MD770LL/A for my recording studio. The workstation is really powerfull and silent, but it has one major problem for me: computer comes with pre-installed Mac OS X 10.7.3 Lion, and as I understand, I can't install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on this machine. In this case, some plug-ins and instruments, that critical for my works are unavailable for me now. For example - MusicLab RealGuitar and RealLPC thru the VST to RTAS adapter (I'm using Pro Tools in my studio) don't working correctly on a Lion OSX. Unfortunately, I can't find any solution, to fix it... Even on an official support website of that software developers. Secondary, I still need Rosetta for some applications.
In that situation, my studio can't fully work.
So, what I should do??? WHY is officialy impossible to install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a new Mac Pro, if its components is absolutely identic with Mac Pro 2010, that supported Mac OS X Snow Leo???
    Thanks!
With a big hope for a help!
    Alexey

    Hi!
Good news for anyone, who wants to install Mac OS X 10.6.x on a Mac Pro 2012!!!
As it turned out, the original installation DVD disc from the Mac Pro 2010, fully compatible with Mac Pro 2012! The images of DVD is quite possible to find on the Internet. Just checked on my system - boot from the fresh-burned disc, and Mac OS X 10.6.4 installed without problems! After that, updated to 10.6.8 - and it works!
Personally for me - it is great news!
Everyone have a nice day! Thanks!:-)

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter>
It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

  • Recommendations for audio interface with new mac pro to avoid latency?

    Hi friends,
I have a new Mac Pro on order for editing video in FCPX, but Presonus says my older Presonus Firebox won't work with Mavericks and the new Mac Pro. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement?
I only use the interface to drive 2 powered expternal speakers and a headset, so I don't need something super sophisticated.
As I read about units, almost all come with USB 2.0 connections. But the new Mac Pro only offers USB, Thunderbolt 2, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 1.4 Ultra HD inputs. If I can't find a fairly inexpensive audio interface with USB 3.0, I'd have to go through another connection to get into the Mac Pro.
The key for me is to make sure and avoid latency, a critical issue for editing video.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Duncan

    Thanks Mark and Smokerz,
Your point about USB2 working in USB3 ports is something I wasn't aware of. That opens a lot of doors for me. And I'll look into the Yamaha sound board as one possibility.
Thank you both for helping me.

  • VERY upset with new Mac Pro

I just spent over $4,000.00 for a brand new Mac Pro, 8-Core, Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” processors.
I'm still at the point where I may not be blaming this new computer 100%, but when you upgrade to this extent you expect everything to go faster. You certainly don't expect for things to take longer.
I upgraded from a G5 (not exactly sure what model) running 10.4.11, couldn't go any higher.
My biggest complaint is it takes LONGER to do things!!?? I feel like I'm back in 1999 or 2000. To open an Excel file takes, no kidding, 3-4 minutes. To open a Word file, about 3-4 minutes. I have the newest version of Office there is. Dreamweaver CS5 is slower than ever and jumpy, buggy, what ever word you wanna use. Sending files over to an external server takes 200-300% longer.
I'm really not sure what is going on. Maybe a font conflict issue as I brought all my fonts over from old computer.
    Thanks for any advice.

Sorry, and of course wish you had asked us first. And read through
http://macperformanceguide.com/index.html - check "topics" there are 100+ with guides to buying, upgrade etc.
One tip: Do a clean install on another drive
Don't migrate applications, install them fresh
    make sure everything is current
Your Mac boots by default and requires 64-bit drivers for 64-bit kernel mode
The idea is more cores isn't faster, faster cores are, and even stock 2.8 4-core is a worthy system. Next choice: 3.2 4-core or sweetest of all is 3.33GHZ 6-core
    Add RAM to 6 x 4GB or 3 x 8GB for good measure.
Avoid any plug-in or app that is PowerPC and needs to use Rosetta.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350
Fonts have been known to conflict, duplicates, even corrupt.
Of course hard to resist migrating. Or taking time, but G5 owners have had to redo everything and that does work.
A test: do a clean install on another hard drive, do the updates, try that and see how well it goes.
Keep boot drive to just OS + applications and mini-home folder
2nd drive for media library, data
3rd scratch, with a small 30GB Mac OS X just for repairs and emergency use
    Try a new user account.
See if you are booting in 32-bit mode
    Repair your system with FSCK
    Do Safe Mode once
Any cables, peripherals, out of date drivers for printers, external hard drives.
Hard drives that were formatted by G5 using Apple Partition Map should be reformatted to GUID. All. If you brought your old G5 system drive over, move the files to a data drive and reformat. Don't leave the OS from G5 around.

  • Why does Magic Mouse lag with new Mac Pro?

My magic mouse worked great on the old G5. Works fine an mini mac. Unusable on the brand new mac pro.
I have a $10 laptop mouse from an old pc that is wireless through a tiny usb connector that works 1000 times better.
    Why?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

I have three MM. One just does not work well. The other two are fine with the 2013 Mac Pro. Sometimes you have to clean the optical lens and sometimes they just don't work on any machine.

  • USB Connection Issues-New Mac Pro

I have a new Mac Pro (late 2013) that has USB connection issues.
First; it often fails to recognize a USB keyboard, or takes more than a minute to do so.  I tried it with two different keyboards, one a regular Apple USB keyboard and the other a Das Keyboard unit.  I tried it both on a powered USB hub and directly connected to the computer.  Neither of these affected the problem.  It happened both under Mountain Lion and Yosemite, and seems to be worse under Yosemite.  This problem DOES NOT occur on my Mac Mini, so the problem appears to be with the Mac Pro.  Most of the time unplugging and plugging the keyboard in again solves the problem.  This gets old.  I have gone to using a bluetooth keyboard but much prefer the USB keyboards with the numeric keyboard.
It also ejects the only USB drive attached to it.  It does not eject the two Thunderbolt drives.  The disconnection occurs when the Mac Pro is in the "sleep" mode; the "Disk not ejected properly" message is displayed when the computer wakes up.  This happens almost all the time.  The same drive does not exhibit this behavior when attached to the Mac Mini.  It is an older G-Drive unit.
Possibly related to this is the fact that the two Thunderbolt units (Pegasus R2 and Lacie) do not shut off when the Mac Pro is sleeping.  I wonder if the problem lies in how the unit "sleeps" and "wakes up".  I don't know enough about the internal workings of these things to know how to test for this.
If anyone knows how to fix this I'd appreciate some advice.

  • Slow render speed with new Mac Pro / NVIDIA 8800

I bought a new Mac Pro to replace a dual G5 because I have a number of Motion projects to finish quickly. My local dealer recommended the NVIDIA 8800 as it has 512 mb RAM (versus 128 on my old machine). I'm finding that the render time is worse than with the G5. I have yet to successfully render a 1 minute segment using Compressor (I've left it to run overnight several times with no success).
In Activity Monitor I'm seeing this message: CompressorTranscoder (Not Responding). But none of Batch Monitor, Compressor or Motion are unresponsive - not indicating any hung applications.
I've read that version 10.5.5 has compromised the NVIDIA card with Motion but haven't been able to get any reliable corroboration. As the Mac Pro shipped with 10.5.5 I can't really roll back to an earlier version.
Any advice? Anyone with similar experiences? I'm trying to render on a new iMac with 4 GB of RAM (with the ATI 2600 video card) but it doesn't seem to be working as it is an hour in and shows at least three more hours.

  • Odd Wireless Mighty Mouse  behavior with new Mac Pro?

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac pro and Wireless Apple Mighty Mouse & Keyboard.
The mouse however is not operating properly, it is jerky and slow to respond on a intermittent regular basis. I can move the cursor around the screen but it will stutter and jerk slowly then pick up ok?
I had the mouse and keyboard with my iMac and it worked fine. I have run all updates and re-installed but to no avail. The keyboard is fine.
I suspect it's a hardware issue with my new mac Pro but i'd love it if someone has any other possible causes.
    Thanks.

Hi, there's a quite a few people with similar problems, including myself.
My keyboard likes to drop it's connection for no apparent reason, which in turn likes to mess up my mouse and cause it to stutter for a while. Pairing up new devices can do this too, I've found.
It's been thought that some Mac Pro's came with their WiFi and BT wires incorrectly fitted, if you have a search you should find a link to the tutorial if you want to try switching them around.
That said, it didn't make any difference to my BT keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, so I switched them back.
I've been hoping for a software fix, but no joy so far, glad I got a three year warranty as standard.

  • Premeire CC 2014 not playing clips or timeline with New Mac Pro Late 2013 D700

I have used premeire cs5 and cs6 and never had this issue
I just bought a new mac pro and installed the trial of Premeire cc 2014
I import clips like normal, set my sequence and the play button does not work
in the viewer or in the timeline.  Can seem to make anything work
also I am on 10.9.5 which from what I can see should be fine.

    Hi Ernie,
Try this: create a new user with Admin privileges and see if you can get Premiere Pro to playback video once more.

  • Will FCP 7 Work with New Mac Pros?

Any indication of I will still be able to work in FCP7 on the new Mac Pro 2013? I'm not too keen on FCPX at the moment. Thanks for any info.

All true, however, FCS 2009 (aka FCS 3) does run with the current OSX (10.8.4) which is two full versions beyond the last supported one (10.6.8).
So, the real answer is, we'll have to wait and see how things play out.

  • Migration Assistant and permissions issues with new Mac Pro

    Hi There,
I've not had any significant issues with Migration Assistant in the past but I can't create a reliable system with my new Mac Pro.
After using Migration Assistant during the initial setup, my user account wasn't even transferred. I tried restarting but in the end, I followed these instructions to reset and run the assitant again: http://stationinthemetro.com/2013/11/10/make-mavericks-re-run-the-setup-assistan t
I've just finished running it for a second time, and while the user account is now on my new system, there are so many permissions issues that the system is unusable (I can't even run Safari). Creative cloud, 1Password, safari, Dropbox are all apps that give me Disk i/o or permissions errors.
If I look in the user folder, many directories within it have a red minus icon. I've tried fixing permissions using Disk Utility but something is not right.
In the past, the new system just boots like the old one but this time round, it asked me to create an account after Migration Assistant had finished - is this normal? I used the same username and password as before but I'm not sure Migration Assistantis working properly.
Does anyone know a full-proof way of fixing and transferring my account without having to spend hours downloading OSX for a full erase and install?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

    Thanks for the reply,
I didn't understand exactly what to put into AppleScript sorry (never used it before) - so I just ran the following from the Terminal:
    $ echo $UID
    $ sudo chown -R 503 ~
And restarted - everything works now - thanks heaps.
What had happened and is this something I did or did Migration Assistant just get confused?
I have 3 new Mc Pros to setup on Monday so just want to ensure those are hassle free.
    Cheers
    Ben
