I need some hand holding...

ok. so i'm on my computer alot, but i don't exactly know all of the names for things and how they work.
anyways, my internet has been so slow lately. i use the latest version of firefox. we are on a very speedy connection (my latest test had us at 9.94mbps) so that my husband can beat up on little boys playing call for duty, yet it takes me sometimes up to 30 seconds to load a page.
so i went to apple.com and found "how to troubleshoot a software issue". (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199)i opened another user account and this one ran fine. i am deducing (which i try not to do too often) that, based on what i read, the trouble lies with my one account.
so they gave me a list of things to do (having to do with preference files and other things that i know nothing about), but i actually don't even know where they are talking about to start my process.
does anyone have "an idiots guide to fixing your mac" that might point me in the right direction or have any idea what i am rambling on about?
oh. 2 things that might or might not be related but i have no idea:
1. last night, when i was opening up my new user account, i noticed a mac in my shared folder that wasn't one of ours. my husband told me to change our airport password, which i did and it disappeared.
2. for the past few months, my iphone has been losing my contacts. one day they will be there the next they wont. sometimes it will convert them to phone numbers with no names, and sometimes just delete them. syncing with my mac doesn't help as they will be missing from there as well.
thanks for any help. please let me know if you need more info.

HI,
First things first. If you profile is correct and you are running 10.5.6, you need to update your system software to 10.5.8. Download and install the v10.5.8 Combo Update
Launch Firefox...
1. From the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History... .
2. From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select the desired range; to clear your entire cache, select Everything.
3. Click the down arrow next to "Details" to choose what history elements to clear. Click Clear Now.
As for the Mac OS X... you can boot from your Mac install disc, run Disk Utility to Verify and Repair the startup disk if necessary.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
For help with your iPhone, post in the iPhone Forums
The links I posted may not be available due to maintenance but should be able to access them shortly.
My video may help you to understand preference files and how to locate them for troubleshooting in the future.

  • Need some hand-holding and bullet point direction

ok, i need some help. We shoot our church services on Sony PDW-700 HD XDCAMS. We shoot in 420 HQ (whatever that is). Once we finish shooting the service, we pull the source video off of the XDCAM disk using the Sony XDCAM transfer utility. I believe we end up with a .mls file. We then edit the source and send it to compressor and then to DVD studio pro and it gets burned to a standard DVD. What we end up with is a video with artifacts in it. What I mean by artifacts is wavy lines around the edges of movement.
What I need to know, from step 1 to step whatever, is HOW to get the source from FCP to DVD w/out artifacts. It seems that we should be able to produce a DVD that looks better than ours and w/out the wavy lines around the edges of moving objects.
What I'm looking for is something like this:
When we open FCP, are there any preferences we need to have set before we import our source or will FCP adjust our project settings to match our source?
When done editing, do we need to do anything special when we send it to compressor?
Once in DVDSP, what do we need to be doing to make sure it comes out looking it's best.
I realize I am asking a lot here, but we're not novices. We understand things like the format of our media, etc. We're looking for a list or bullet point process to get from Media to DVD and have it look it's best.
    Thank you
    Cliff

If you have any doubts regarding the format you shot,
look in the Browser, control-click the media file, and select Item Properties > Format.
That will tell you exactly what FCP thinks you're using.
Note that if Field Dominance is None, your clip is progressive.
In the future, you should ask your camera crew to shoot progressive.

You may want to simplify the workflow by setting your sequence up first.
Before you create any sequences, choose menu item > Easy Setup,
and choose one of the XDCAM presets.
    • Chose Sony XDCAM HD
    • Choose HDCAM HD 1080i60 VBR
    • Choose framerate 20.97
Once you do this, all new sequences will have that format.
If you've set your sequence up correctly, dragging a clip to the sequence will not produce this:
For best performance, your sequence and external video should be set to the format
of the clips you are editing. Change sequence settings to match clip settings?
If you click yes, you are not transcoding. You are setting the sequence format to be the same
    as what you shot.
The bottom line is that when you set the sequence to match the footage,
you should be able to play the footage without rendering. Of course,
once you start editing and adding transitions, rendering may become
necessary. Check out the note on rendering to ProRes 422 in this article:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/ex1_sd_outputyoung.html
Although he's talking about going from XDCAM EX to a PAL DVD,
most of the principles apply. In particular:
    • Set Rendering preferences to ProRes 422, i.e.
Sequence Settings > Render Control > Render > Codec
    • Do your HD edit.
    • When it's time to convert to SD (step 2 in the article) create a new sequence
with the settings NTSC Anamorphic. This will preserve the nice wide-screen look
of the original footage even when played on an SD DVD.
    • Step 4 of the article: choose NTSC anamorphic.
If your footage was shot interlaced, choose field dominance lower (even).
The compressor is NTSC, and the frame rate is 29.97.
In the advanced compression settings, note that it should be 16:9,
and Progressive if you're shooting or converting to progressive.
Check out the last section of this article:
    http://www.lafcpug.org/features/featurekeeping_thejob.html
where field dominance is discussed in more detail.

  • Upgrading from Panther to Tiger -- Need some hand holding

    Hello all,
So I'm a newbie to upgrading operating systems on the Mac but need to upgrade to Tiger in order to install Final Cut Studio 5 so I can use my new HD camera. I will upgrade to Leopard when it comes out, but I need to be able to edit my videocamera's footage now.
So...I've read so many horror stories I wanted to post about my system and some of my most used applications and see if anyone sees any potential problems, as far as compatibility OR not working once the upgrade is complete..
    I have a 1.8 Dual G5, 2 gigs RAM, running Panther 10.3.9
I use these applications FREQUENTLY and want to make sure they still work after doing a simple upgrade:
Adobe Creative Suite (not 2, but the one before that)
    Dreamweaver 8
Final Cut HD 4.5 (will I be able to open old projects with the new FCP 5, otherwise I won't need this afterwards)
DVD Studio Pro 3 (will I be able to open old projects with the new DVD Studio Pro 4 otherwise I won't need this afterwards)
iLife '06 (this won't be overwritten, correct?)
    iWork
Quickbooks (that came with my original system...will it stay too?)
Microsoft Office X for Mac (using Entourage as my mail program)
    Virtual PC for Mac
Classic OS 9 (I've read I should remove this before I upgrade? I never use it)
I think that's the important stuff. Some people tell me they've upgraded with no problems but I guess I read these boards too much to be that confident.
I've backed up my Docs, iTunes, iPhoto...anything else in my Library or something else you recommend I backup?
Do I choose Archive and Install for a Simple Upgrade or will it just say "Simple Upgrade" and not prompt me further?
Sorry if these are dumb questions...I'm just nervous I will have a big paperweight on my desk after this and I have mucho work to do right now!
    Thanks everyone!
    Mare

    Here are some suggestions:
    Important: Please read before installing
    1. If you have a third-party FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing this update. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.
    System Update Procedure
    A. Repair hard drive and permissions.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
    B. Clone your existing system to an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup or source volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    C. Consult the Tiger Installation Checklist.
You have three upgrade options. If you use the Upgrade installation option be sure you have repaired the hard drive and permissions first and made your backup. If you choose the Archive and Install option then you only need to repair the hard drive.
Neither of the above options will erase the disk. Some of your software may not work with Tiger. You will need to upgrade those programs. It would be best to do the upgrades to your software before upgrading to Tiger.
You don't have to remove your OS 9 installation for Classic. However, if you don't use it you can recover the disk space by deleting it from the drive. The OS 9 folders are located at the root directory of the hard drive and are:
+System Folder+ (Note this is NOT the System folder.)
    +Applications (Mac OS 9)+
    Documentation
Be sure Classic is not activated (System Preferences.) Simply open the System Folder and drag the System file into the Trash. Restart the computer. After the computer restarts empty the Trash then drag the three OS 9 folders to the Trash and empty.

  • Need some help learning cue points, etc

I need some help with a Flash project I'm working on. If any
Flash junkies out there are up for sitting down with me through
email or IM and helping me get to the point where I have a template
FLA doing what I want to do, I'd be willing to pay you. It wouldn't
be much, but it would be something. Here's what I'm trying to do:
I need to create an interactive talking-head style flash
presentation with a number of progressive download externally
linked FLV files, playing in succession, supported by movie-clip
text animations and supporting graphics which are triggered by cue
points in the video. I also need a simple navigation menu linking
to the FLV files. I've got some of this down already, namely, I've
laid the FLVs in and they are playing in succession. I'm stuck on
the cue point part. At this point I really just need some hands-on
help. I've bought books, I've scoured the web.
I'm easy to communicate with, and I'm good with computers and
comfortable in many multimedia design programs. Flash is very
powerful, but tougher to learn than I expected, and I'm at the end
    of my rope =P

My advice... start with a very simple "proof of concept" project before you attempt the entire package.
It will be much easier to scale up if you first have a very good understanding of what's going on.
So one simple video with just one cuepoint and only one button and additional display. You'll also have to work out the interaction of pausing the video when a cuepoint is reached or button pushed to display the graph, giving the viewer time to read the graph... then when the viewer closes the graph, the video should "resume".
Start very simple and build on that only after you understand the fundamentals.
Second, you mention "video reports"... plural. So that most likely means that you will need a video player with a "playlist".
This may mean that you'll need to learn to use a little .xml to bring in the playlist data. You may also find xml an excellant way to bring other data into you project.
At the link listed above there is an excellant tutorial on "Integrating Flash and XML"
    "Flash and XML"
    "XML Video Playlist"
    "ActionScript 3 XML Basics"
    "ActionScript 3 Advanced XML"
Personally I would not even begin a project like this without considering how I could use xml to feed data into the project.
Here's an example of a video player I created that has a playlist, thumbnails, categories, transcipts, "Now Playing" etc. All that data comes into the main .swf via various xml files. Super good way in input data into Flash.
    http://www.drheimer.com/video/
Yours is a rather ambitious project and will take awhile to gain the skill and assemble the pieces. So when you come to a new part... first create a real simple "proof of concept" model so you can learn how that section works. Don't expect to be able to assemble the entire project all at once.
    Best wishes,
    Adninjastrator

    Hi,
Can you mention the eclipse version you are using? And the platform in which you are trying to build?
I feel its always better to be platform specific when you go in for headless build. I can see that the configs value in your properties file is "configs=*,*,*". Try changing it to appropriate value and build your product. For example, I use "configs=win32, win32, x86" for building my product in 32-bit windows machine.

  • Need to remove a background but keep the image, in this case, some hand written lettering I want to put on a different background.

I just bought the Photoshop Elements 13 app for my Mac Book.  I always have trouble with the help menus and never give myself enough time to go through tutorials. So it's a simple question I have, I think.
I have some hand written lettering that I scanned to put on the back of a CD jewel case. I want to take just the lettering and place it over a different background.  How do I do this without having to cut out each individual letter to eliminate the background lined paper I hand wrote on? Could someone please point me in the right direction??

Is the lettering separate from the lines?
It would help if you post the scan. You can do that via the camera icon at the top of the reply box here on the forum.

  • I need some clarity

As scheduled in the roadworks thing I saw, work was to be performed on my road (by UK POWER NETWORKS (EDF ENERGY)) no doubt to power up the fibre cabinet, and this morning four vans appear, working on the cabinet again. When walking by I asked an OR guy how much longer it would be and he said not long at all now, so I can only assume they're almost ready to make it live (hopefully anyway).
Anyway, I need some clarity if the cabinet does go live very soon.
    1) I'm currently with BE, who have begun getting a reputation of losing customers due to them holding back on fibre products and having network capacity problems. To switch to BT I presume I ask for a migration authorisation code and then phone BT and give them that whilst making the order (or would it be better if I ordered on the website)? My phone line itself is with BT, not BE.
    2) When I signup to Infinity eventually, I would also like to scrap anytime phone calls as I plan to use VOIP/SIP technologies instead. What would be the best way to do this? Should I arrange this just before I order Infinity, or should I arrange this after I've been activated on Infinity?
    3) How accurate are line estimations for fibre currently? For example, I get roughly 19mbit sync on ADSL2+ Annex A at 3dB SNR with BT giving an estimate of 17.5mbit. I presume with fibre the estimation BT gives is rather conservative and is usually slightly 5%-10% higher in reality, unless of course you have a seriously bad line riddled with joints or what not? I consider my line quite good, with a 25.5dB attenuation at the mentioned sync and SNR.
    4) I'm not racist or anything, but I prefer talking to people in the UK, preferably with a English accent as I can understand them clearly. How is this typically with BT? And if it's not typically speaking to people in a UK call centre then is there a way I can, if needed, speak to someone in the UK (or is it just a matter of ringing back until someone from the UK answers my call)?
    5) Throttling; Based on the experiences people have had with Infinity, how has your experience been with this? I understand BT's throttling policy is targetted at P2P, which assumably covers services such as torrent, not actual downloads from websites or FTP. I have read the fair usage policy so there's no need to direct me to that, I just want to know the experiences of users on Infinity themselves.
    And finally...
    6) I have a Cisco 887VA router, which does ADSL2+ and VDSL2 (up to 100mbit, 17a Profile), after BT Openreach have installed their modem can I at a later time (e.g. after the 10 day settling period they recommend) change it so that my Cisco 887VA router directly connects to the VDSL socket, or is this against BT's agreement?
    Thanks in advance.

1 - Yep a MAC should be fine.
2 - do it at the time of ordering Infinity
3 - Pretty accurate, in fact most seem to be quite conservative
4 - Technical help is based offshore
5 - In my experience and according to BT only P2P is throttled
6 - you should be able to use it. Quite a lot of people use the Draytek kit with no issues

Remote control of a networked computer in your home? Why? Share the folders that hold information/data and leave it to that.
I use a version of Symantec's PCAnywhere to remotely control a computer in my office from my home. That's because I live 7 miles away from my office. I get lazy, so remote control is my answer.

  • I am lost and need some guidance

Please bear with me for being so explicit on my posting, but I don't have a simpler way. But need some ideas to create a simple, safe workflow that includes back up.
I only use my Int HD (350GB), to install and run Apps; otherwise, I use Ext HDs. I have approximate 150GB of images, and another 50 GB of misc. files.
I have the following Ext HD:
1- 2 TB FW/USB -got a great deal brand new
2- 1 TB FW/USB already in use. I have 1 Partition (250 GB) while I was using Tiger
I used it to create a Boot up Dr, backing up Apps. But no longer use it.
I have been having some difficulty with this drive; sometimes it doesn't get recognized or stays on. I will be replacing the electric power cord, and all cables.
I am not sure if I should invest the time to re-format the entire drive and eliminate the Partition or just leave untouched.
    3- 500 GB USB - secondary copy (non-RAI)
4- 350 GB USB - third copy (off site)
I am trying to decide how to use these drives, and hopefully, without the need to re-formatting them, but who knows. In addition, I would like to take advantage of TM for my back up.
5 Which DR should I set up as my destination DR for TM?
If I use the 2 TB is it better to set as RAID 0,better performance but if one drive fails, I'd be SOL, right?
On the other hand RAID 1, the redundancy factor would increase overhead. Any suggestion.
I also use Lightroom and would like to know how I should set it up to back up LR (non-image).
And lastly, about TM can I be select a specific source files for back ups? And can I back up different source Drives?
Is there a way that I could prevent TM not to back up Cache, because it will increase the overhead
Again, any suggestion would be appreciated

    crossover wrote:
I called Applecare yesterday and told me that TM only works with the Internal HD, no other DR, not sure about that. I usually get better answers here than wasting my time calling them, go figure.
That's just plain wrong. Some of them don't seem to know much about Time Machine except the basics (and, to be fair, most Mac users don't have data on external drives, so it likely doesn't come up much). But yes, TM will back-up any internal or directly-attached external USB or F/W drive/partition, as long as it's formatted Mac OS Extended. In fact, in most cases it will do that by default -- if you don't want something backed-up, you have to specifically exclude it.
I have never tried TM and not sure if that would be a good workflow or just use other Apps like the one you mentioned
There are advantages and disadvantages to TM, as with any other app. One of the main advantages of TM is the very fast, hourly, incremental backups of additions and changes. This gives you an excellent chance of recovering a previous version of something that was changed or deleted in error (such as "Save" instead of "Save as"), or somehow corrupted.
And there really isn't any workflow, once it's set up (which is also quite easy). TM just does it's thing.
First it does a full backup of everything on your system (less some caches, system workfiles, logs, trash, etc.). That, of course, is a lengthy process.
Thereafter, it will do an incremental backup hourly, as long as your Mac is awake and the external drive is attached.
It automatically "thins" your backups, including when the TM drive/partition gets near full, deleting the oldest backups to make room for new ones.

  • Please I need some help with a table

    Hi All
I need some help with a table.
My table needs to hold prices that the user can update.
Also has a total of the column.
my question is if the user adds in a new price how can i pick up the value they have just entered and then add it to the total which will be the last row in the table?
I have a loop that gets all the values of the column, so I can get the total but it is when the user adds in a new value that I need some help with.
I have tried using but as I need to set the toal with something like total
totalTable.setValueAt(total, totalTable.getRowCount()-1,1); I end up with an infinite loop.
Can any one please advise on some way I can get this to work ?

    Hi Jon,
The "correct" name for an iTunes Library file is iTunes Library.itl. Nearly all updates to iTunes involve some upgrade the library file. The pre-upgrade file is moved into the Previous iTunes Libraries folder, stamped with the date of the upgrade, and then used to construct a new library incorporating any changes that have been made to the data structure for the new build. Should this upgrade go wrong you can usually copy the archived file back into the main iTunes folder, give it the correct name, start iTunes and iTunes will do the upgrade over again. Like this...
Sometimes when iTunes isn't shut down properly the active library file gets corrupted. If you start iTunes in this state you may be prompted to locate a valid library file. It looks like you have connected to a much older library file at some point. What is less clear is if this is a recent event or an older one.
I suggest you search the entire computer for all files of the form *.itl. Ideally we need to find the most recently modified one that isn't corrupt, place it in the main iTunes folder, rename it as iTunes Library.itl and connect to it. Having placed a suitable library file in the correct location and renamed it, click the icon to start iTunes and then immediately press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to create or choose a library. Click choose and browse to the renamed/relocated library file. If that file won't work close iTunes, and try another in the fashion shown in the diagram until you find one that is satisfactory. No need to use the shift-start-iTunes trick again as this time each new file will be on the same path.
Once you've found the best of the available libraries you can use a tool called iTunes Folder Watch to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created, i.e., add in the new files, or delete the entries for tracks that have been removed from the media folder.
If for some reason the restored library contains broken links to the media I have a script called FindTracks that can repair them.
When you get it all working make a backup!

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!   First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 15 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
A bad internal PRAM battery can also cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!   Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Here's another Fw Faq.
