If it says there is no sim card installed it either can't find one physcially, or the card moved and lost contact or has failed. A new sim card can be obtained form your Mum's cell/mobile carrier if needed easily.
However this is irrelevant to whether or not the iPad can join a Wifi network. Its 2 different things.
For now ignore the Sim card message and just try to connect to her Wifi network. It is independent and should function regarldess of the sim card status.

iOS devices can only print directly to AirPrint printers. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are capable of using AirPrint.
To print directly from an iPad / iPhone you will need an AirPrint compatible printer or another device to act as a print server. That's great, but not what we want to do. I've been looking at all the boards for a solution to this and, you are correct. There isn't one - at least not one native to iOS. What I think EricB2 would like, as well as many of us, is the ability to take any audio stream (pandora, tune-in radio, etc.) and stream directly to multiple airplay devices from our iPads and iPhones without having to use the computer. Just walk into the house from the car, hit a button on the iDevice and start listening to the same stream we were listening to in the car on all of our home speakers. I know, this is like science fiction. My own opinion is that it would cut into Apples lucrative iTunes business model and really isn't in their best interest, so I don't think it will be happening anytime soon. Bottom line is if you want to use your Apple devices for whole house streaming, you need a computer and music from iTunes($$). Otherwise it's $$ out of Apples pocket.

every connection is a bit different. Generally, connect to the wifi, then you may need to open Safari, and may even need to try to get to one of your bookmarked pages to trigger the 'agree to our terms' page to come up.
As to it kicking you off every so often, there are sometimes glitches with the wifi on iPads, you can also be subject to any programming the hotel has. Like I've noticed various places that only allow you to log on for a period of time before having to relogin.
most hotels have 1-800 numbers, so you can always try calling that to see if their tech support has any tips for the frequent disconnection issue.

Install Splashtop2 on the PC and enable it to be controlled or ran from iPad or Reflection to simply allow iPad to serve as PC unwired monitor. With Splashtop and an Apple TV connected, you use the smartboard as usual, yet the PC and iPad can see the same content. The impaired child can even interact with the Smart Board via the iPad as if he were writing directly on the big screen. Erasing functions can be done by touching the Smart Board manual controls. My iPad is disabled because of a Bluetooth mishap (my keyboard in my coat pocket tried to enter my password too many times). So I can't enter my password on the screen. Unfortunately I didn't back up the last few weeks of documents in any way, via either iCloud or syncing. And I just can't erase all the work I've done--it's irreplaceable to me.
Is there any way to connect the iPad to a WiFi network through external software, maybe using the lightning connector?
I ask because in iCloud I marked the iPad as Lost (in Find My iPhone), so I may get another chance at entering my password if the iPad can get online to receive the signal. But because it's disabled it won't connect to a network.

The closest you can come, without having a 3G iPad is to have a cellular mobile hotspot like the Mifi or such device, use that to get to wifi, or to tether it to a cell phone.

Is your iPad seeing the Router SSID (Network Name) in the list of networks? If so what happens when you try to select it? Are you asked for a password? If the network isn't secure then it won't ask you for a password and you should just connect.
