I need to borrow a rack!?

Yep I suppose I could do that. I just felt naturally hesitant having a stack of patch panels and routing/NTE equipment just sort of left there without being secured in a cabinet. Even though realistically nobody would be going near them because the building won't be occupied by us yet. Some standard IT paranoia on my part there perhaps.

Spiceheads! We are moving our office (tentatively) at the end of August over the Bank Holiday. I am in a bit of a dilemma.Essentially, the issue is that naturally the likes of CAT6 cabling and telecoms has to go in before we can even look at migrating the infrastructure over. All this kit will need to be racked. The simple solution to this is just buy a rack but even an 18U unit is approaching 500 and we don't actually need to keep it! We already have a 42U and a 18U rack here, so we can take these with us to the new place and have all our kit in those. It's an awful waste spending that on a cabinet we don't intend to keep. But - as above - the issue is that the comms need installing before we can move, so we can't utilise our existing cabinets because they will only be collapsed when we move on that weekend.Ideally, I would borrow a rack...

And what do I do if I run 10.6.8 and iOS4? Do I need to borrow another machine just to accept conditions?

To run photostream on an AppleTV you need to sign up to their new terms and conditions but you can't do this from the Apple TV, you also can't do it from 10.6.8 or iOS4. So I need a machine running a later OS. Hence my comment about borrowing another machine . Once signed up it seems photostream will work with my iCloud account to which my older OS systems still seem to be able to access. I think I am in the right forum.

  • Need to borrow Adobe CS3 Standard for Mac installation DVD.

I recently installed a larger 1 Tb hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I intentionally did a clean installation and then copied the CS3 apps and system folders from my Time Machine backup to the new hard drive.
Bridge CS3 works fine and has retained my presets. However Acrobat CS3 and Photoshop CS3 launch and then give an error message, indicating that I need to uninstall and then reinstall the app.
Adobe technical support is unable to provide me with a copy of the CS3 media.
Help. I intentionally am running Snow Leopard on my primary partition just so that I have no incompatibility issues with Adobe Creative Suite 3 and QuarkXPress 6.52.

You have posted exactly the same question on the WAN Routing and Switching forum where it has already gotten some response. I suggest that we consolidate any discussion to that forum.

  • What do I need to connect to the internet

I have a mac book OSX 105.3 Leopard, which i purchased in the USA. Since arrivng in the Uk I have been ubable to connect to the internet. I was under the impression that once connected to a modem I would have the interenet. I tried connecting it to the cable modem in the place where I'm staying and nothing happens. It seems that nobody here has a mac, and there is no Apple store for me to go to ( Liverpool). I found one store that sells aplle products and they told me it need to be reconfigured???? The apple phone support are telling me it's the modem. I was going to get airport, but apple says that won't help. I've never had problems with any of my macs in the US, but here I feel stranded. Do I need to replace the cable modem with a wireless modem? Will this work as they are expensive and non refundable. Help!

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
It could be an old modem that is not Leopard compatible.
You may need to borrow a PC in order to check and/or download the latest modem firmware.
Also temporarily turn off your firewall.
Do you have the instruction book for the modem?
If the modem is a NAT type (most are) the you should be able to access it directly by entering its IP address. Here in the US, it's usually 192.168.1.1 or .251. Apple uses the 10.x.x.x scheme and there is another one.
If you manage to access the modem this way, you might need a password. The cable company or the manual should have the defalt userid and password.
If you manage to get "inside" the modem, then you know that the problem is partially solved.
You might also use the Mac Network Utility.app to debug your system.
I don't think it is a compatibility issue, per se, but simply some settings that have to be changed.
There are many Leopard users in England and perhaps someone there can chime in and be of further assistance.

  • Macbook died so now need to transfer my backup from TC to a new Dell

My main worry is transferring all the apps/music etc that we had in itunes. As this was my sons computer there is not so much data but he currently has none of his original purchases on his new computer. As he also lost his itouch prior to the computer dieing I have no other back up except in TC. Since the TC was only operating with Macs will it now transfer those files onto a Dell PC? Thanks for your help

No, sorry, Time Machine backups are in a rather complex format that Windows (and even Macs prior to Leopard) simply don't recognize.
You'll need to borrow a Mac to have any hope of recovering them.  The apps won't work on a PC at all, but you should be able to restore the iTunes library (or individual songs) to an external HD, then to the PC.
Unless the PC can read HFS+ (Mac-formatted) HDs, you should format the external with the Mac, with the MS-DOS (FAT) format, equivalent to FAT32.  If the Mac is running 10.6.5 or later, you can use the ExFAT format.  See #1 in Using Disk Utility for formatting instructions.
To restore selected items to an "alternate" location (ie, not the one they were saved from), see #16 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Catalyst 3850 rack mount kit: 3850-RACK-KIT or C3850-4PT-KIT ?

When purchasing a Cisco Catalyst 3850, do we need to buy the rack mounting kit to install it in  a standard 19" rack? 3850-RACK-KIT or C3850-4PT-KIT ? Is the 4-point kit really necessary, can the 3850 hang only on the front of the rack?

No, you don't need the C3850-4PT-KIT.  3850-RACK-KIT comes in the box and it is good enough as long as you rack it nice and tide. The reason some people use C3850-4PT-KIT is because the switch will hang from the back a little when using 3850-RACK-KIT and so if you don't like that than you want the 4PT.

    Need Output as below :
For parent profile 1, whatever i mentioned above is not correct. Borrowed 47 points from OFL to ONL to make ONL and also from OFL category has 176 points remaining after lending to ONL and using only 100 points, remaining 76 points are discarded. Need to deduct these 76 points also from child profiles. Output will be as below.

    1                  14          OFL       110            0                176          76              100   -47       -63
For parent profile id 2 --> ONL category has 39 points, so borrowed 61 points from OFL category to make ONL points 100.
Now need to populate tbl_link table at child profile level (i.e. child profiles 22,23,24).
Borrowed 61 points from OFL and need to deduct this points from the profile which has highest earned points, in this case deduct from profile 24 which has 31 points, from profile 22 which has 30 points. Need output like below

Now need to populate tbl_link table at child profile level (i.e. child profiles 32,33,34).
in this case ONL has 100 points, so move the remaining 9 points will be expired. OFL category has 223 points total. need only 200 points (i.e. mutiple of 100) for our process, 23 points will be expired and has to deduct from the profile which has highest earned points, in this case from profile 34. Output :

Now need to populate tbl_link table at child profile level (i.e. child profiles 42,43,44).
in this case ONL has 100 points, so move the remaining 9 points will be expired. OFL category has 169 points total. need only 100 points (i.e. mutiple of 100) for our process, 69 points will be expired and has to deduct from the profile which has highest earned points, in this case from profile 43.
    PARENT_PROFILE_ID  PROFILE_ID  CATGCODE  EARNED_POINTS  BORROWED_POINTS  CERT_POINTS  DISCARD_POINTS  USED  BURN_PTS  EXPIRE_PTS
    1                  1           ONL       53             47               100          0               100   -53       0

    1                  14          OFL       110            0                176          76              100   -47       -63
For parent profile id 2 --> ONL category has 39 points, so borrowed 61 points from OFL category to make ONL points 100.
Now need to populate tbl_link table at child profile level (i.e. child profiles 22,23,24).
Borrowed 61 points from OFL and need to deduct this points from the profile which has highest earned points, in this case deduct from profile 24 which has 31 points, from profile 22 which has 30 points. Need output like below
    PARENT_PROFILE_ID  PROFILE_ID  CATGCODE  EARNED_POINTS  BORROWED_POINTS  CERT_POINTS  DISCARD_POINTS  USED  BURN_PTS  EXPIRE_PTS

    2                  24          OFL       31             0                29           29              100   -31       0
For parent profile id 3 --> ONL category has 109 points, so no need to borrow points from OFL category
Output :

For parent profile id 4 --> ONL category has 109 points, so no need to borrow points from OFL category
Output :
    PARENT_PROFILE_ID  PROFILE_ID  CATGCODE  EARNED_POINTS  BORROWED_POINTS  CERT_POINTS  DISCARD_POINTS  USED  BURN_PTS  EXPIRE_PTS
    4                  4           ONL       109            0                109          9               100   100       9

  • I'm having a problem replacing the hard drive and restoring from a back up!

I only recently upgraded my 2007 (white) MackBook from Leopard to Snow Leopard so I could install the latest version of iTunes and sync my iPhone 5. I borrowed the discs from someone at work (because it's difficult to purchase them form Apple) and this worked fine and I've been happily using it since September. I use Time Machine to back up to an external hard drive which has always worked really well for me.
I'm now trying to change the internal hard drive (as the old one is full) but to boot up and format the new disc I need the Leopard boot discs that came with my laptop. I did this fine then tried to restore from a Time Machine backup and again all looked ok and after 3-4 hours it said it was complete and to reboot.
I rebooted and now everytime it boots up it comes up with the error (see attached)
I'm not 100% sure why it's doing this but I have a feeling it's because my Time Machine back ups are now for Snow Leopard and my original boot discs are Leopard. I could probably get hold of the SL upgrade disc again but I will need to borrow them again which could be a little difficult.
I have now put the old Hard Drive back into the laptop and it's working fine again but I need to work out what to do here.
Please please please can someone help
    Many thanks
    Phil Thomas

Huh!! Why couldn't I find this a few months ago? When searching on the Apple site it would only come up with options to upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion. I even spoke to people of some forums and no one else could find it either. That's why I ended up borrowing a copy because it appeared to be the simplest option. I wonder if this has been made available again since the iPhone 5 launch as I know several people who couldn't upgrade to the newer versions of iTunes.
For £14 quid I'll just buy my own copy.
    Thanks for your help Mike

  • My mac's keyboard is not working with my mac.the green light blinks and i cannot get onto my mac. everything on the support questions does not help because i cant go on the mac and i cant sign in

my mac's keyboard is not working with my mac.the green light blinks and i cannot get onto my mac. everything on the support questions does not help because i cant go on the mac and i cant sign in

If you can't sign in, then you can't troubleshoot and/or pair the keyboard until after that........ so, for that, you will need to borrow someone's USB wired keyboard in order to get signed in and to the Keyboard Bluetooth Preferences.

  • Macbook pro for lightroom editing?

    Hi all
I am considering buying a 15 inch macbook pro with retina display to edit my pics in Lightroom but have some questions.
I know that laptops are not ideal for photo editing but while I am a serious-ish photographer, I am not a professional and, after a long day's work at a desk, I like to edit my photos sitting on a sofa at night!
I would prefer 17 inches to 15.4 but apple don't do 17 inches any more, yet I am inclining towards apple for four reasons:  (a) I hear they're fast, (b) I hear the screens are great for picture editing, (c) I've had various frustrations with windows over the years, and (d) windows 8 in particular looks counter-intuitive.
But if I do go apple that will be a big change for me since I've so far been using a Dell Inspiron 1720 (1920 x 1080 resolution), which I've liked, though it's 7 years old and now sluggish.
I'd REALLY appreciate for any advice regarding any or all of the following questions -- thanks VERY much for your time in advance!
    1.  Is the macbook pro really a good deal better than the competition, regarding in particular its screen and speed?  (It better be for the money!)  One photographer told me she didn't like the retina display because it meant things looked very different on the screen compared with when printed.  Is that right and a worry?
    2.  I take it that, as someone with a LR for pc license, I don't need to pay more to install LR for mac on it?
    3.  I take it that it would be straightforward transferring my pics and catalog from a pc to a mac?
    4.  While I am inclined to get the 1TB storage I could get less if I used an external hdd (whcih would also have the upside that my wife could edit our catalog on her computer without needing to borrow mine), but I take it that would slow the macbook down:  both because an xhdd won't be as quick as a SSD, and because the link between xhdd and macbook would slow things down?  If so, it seems silly to pay for the speed and then lose it by attaching an xhdd.  Does that seem right?  (I take it one day we'll all edit our pics in the cloud, e.g. using dropbox, but currently that would be very sluggish I am assuming.)
    5.  I could always attach an external monitor, I take it, if I decided that sometimes I needed something bigger than 15.4".  Yes?
    6.  Importantly, it is cheaper for me to buy the macbook in the US.  Are there signficant downsides to buying a laptop for UK in US (e.g. different keyboard layout, inapplicable warranty, different power cord, etc)?
    7.  Finally, if I don't go for the apple, what alternative would you recommend?  I hear dell xps are good (though also max 15").  Also heard good things about HP envy.  The equivalent to my Dell, which I've liked, is I think the Dell 17R SE.  Any views?
Thank you in advance SO much.  I appreciate this is a lot of questions, but any advice you have under any of them would be REALLY appreciated.
    Thanks again
    David

You are welcome.  Just finished a chat session with an Apple support rep and confirmed the matte option no longer available.  Seems lots has changed since I bought my 17” 19 months back:).  They did say that there were after market screen films available from places like amazon
Have never used anything like that though.  My wife has a 2008 MBP 15” with gloss and I can say it is a nice screen finish, you just have to be careful of lighting from behind you.  All my iMacs were glossy and I did learn to compensate for the added brilliance the screen brought to the photos.  The new soft proofing feature of LR5 seems to better estimate the level of brightness of the printed work, compared to past versions of the s/ware.
In any case, in my opinion you really can’t go wrong with the apple product.  I bought my first iMac in mid 1999 and have never looked back.  I donated that machine to a pre-school in 2008, it was running OSX version 2 or 3 I think.  I did run Photoshop 7.0 on an IBM laptop for a time (windows XP).  I think I had one of the very first versions of Adobe Camera Raw on that machine.  I digress, sorry.
The chat representative did confirm that the 17” is out of production and I’m guessing Apple found the market for the big laptop just wasn’t there.  They did mention that 17” MBP’s show up as “certified refurbished” units from time to time.  Suggest you might explore that option with a local Apple store in the UK, assuming  Apple has store front operations off this continent of course.
Please feel free to contact me with further questions if you wish.
    Take care, Gordy

  • Yesterday I was told by the apple store in Lehigh Valley mall that the only resolve to my apple shutting down on its own was to buy a replacement. They insist it is a hardware issue. I now cannot open any of my apps or photos . I can use safari, but nothl

Yesterday I was told that my ipad which I finished paying off in March  (18)month loan , could not be fixed. The warranty had run out 150 days ago, it was now useless! The solution is to put out 299 dollars for a replacement! I am saddened, shocked and very diasappointed in apple products.  This is my only computer, I waited to get this version ipad so I could finance it, and am dependent on it for Bill paying, etc.. It seems not to be shutting down, so I am reaching out to this community for suggestions .  I now can not open any of my apps. If I tap to open apparently they open because when I tap to shut down they are on screen, but I can not access them!  Any suggestions? Or should I bite the bullet and find 299 to send to apple?

there are some things you can try. I'm sure you've done the reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds until you see the silver apple. See if it'll reboot.
You can also try to restore your iPad. You may need to borrow a friend's computer to do this.
If you have another apple store in the area you can make an appointment and take it in for a second opinion. however, once that device is out of its factory warranty period Apple is pretty much done with it. You get a year, two if you buy the extended warranty, then once it hits that deadline, all you'll ever get is an out of warranty replacement (which is what you were offered). Then it's up to you to decide if you replace it with your same model, put the money towards a newer model, or choose something else. (for me, I have an ipad 2, which is 2.5 years old, so if something goes wrong with it I either toss 249 at a practically defunkt device or put the money towards somethine else that will have a longer life span)

  • Lost & Found iPhone with Find My iPhone - Feature Request

Yes I found the lost phone and I'm very very grateful for the existing feature which works flawlessly once you get a hold of it but from a real life use case, there are things that can be improved that will make it more efficient and effective. This is a summary of feature requests that I figure from the real-life use case of Find My iPhone.
Earlier this week my friend dropped his iPhone on a cab and realize at the end of the day (he initially thought he left it at home) that it must have fell off his pocket in the cab where he can hardly remember the color of the cab let alone the license plate. Having said that I asked him if he had iCloud turned on (basically Find My iPhone in recent iOS) and so we checked. So here is where all the difficulties begin and please keep in mind that in a situation like this we're always in a hurry if not panicking.....
    1. You typically have more than 1 mobile phones:
a.) Where its most likely different brand, model, or OS (you don't buy two identical phones) so in this case he has a Samsung Android where iCloud page can not be rendered - it throws an error. So this didn't work
b.) You need to borrow your friend's "iPhone" to find it and not many people find it obvious that you need to download the Find my iPhone app in addition to just activating iCloud to track a phone. Thats another long step considering in some countries u have a really crappy 3G or sometimes on Edge
c.) If you are lucky your friend have an iPhone or an iPad, you go to www.icloud.com it doesn't do anything except tell you "how to turn on icloud", download Find my Friends, and Find my iPhone.....you need a laptop browser to be able to use the tracking feature....why????? I understand that it won't work with other brands of mobile phones but these are both Apple's!!!
    2. When you realize that you have lost your phone, you don't always have your laptop or an iPad - but you always have mobile phones let it be your secondary one or your friend's. Moreover, your laptop rarely have cellular connection so even if you have it, aside from the fact that it takes you 15 minutes to boot up your laptop, you also have to find yet ANOTHER phone to tether or find a 3G card to plug in to it so it can use cellular as oppose to just wifi, and then walk around with a laptop looking for the lost phone. And laptop don't have GPS, you don't know where you are relative to your lost phone.
    3. You are trying to look for your iPhone from another iPhone (the most convenient way) but you only see ONE dot that shows your lost iPhone but not "you" who are walking around looking for it so you have to:
1.) Open the Find My Iphone app and then see where your phone is located
2.) Open up Google Map (sad but true, Google map is currently the preferable map) to find where you are. Why Google map? In a less developed country, google maps works a lot better in detail.
3.) Try to find where you are relative to where the lost phone is across 2 maps and 2 different apps. But even if it was Apple map, its still 2 different apps switching back and forth.
Yes, the idealistic case which would disregard all this is that you have 2 Apple devices logged on to the same iCloud account then you can see 2 dots but not everyone have enough of that to make it useful :-)
    4. You use to have a send message button, lock the phone, make noise, and erase the phone. Now you need to first lock the phone before you can send a message. Understand that you should always lock the phone first but when you're panicking, making the feature obvious would help
    5. Would be nice to know the "percentage" of the battery and being able to shut down all the apps, dim the screen, and etc. to maximize the battery time before the phone goes dead might be helpful.
It was almost a miracle to get the phone back in a place like this where people tend to immediately shut down your phone and throw away the sim card once they get a hold of it. My friend was very lucky that the phone was in silent and fell into the crack of the backseat and the cab was parked outside the garage so the GPS location was absolutely precise.
Having mentioned that, iOS7 new security feature that requires your Apple login credentials to erase or turn off Find my iPhone. My question here being it says, find my iphone can continue to display message even after erased - if that is the case will I still be able to track it as well? What if I'm the person who erased it remotely, will I still be able to display message as well as track it?

This is a user to user community, Apple are unlikely to read your comments, if you have any suggestions that you think might enhance iCloud you can send Apple your feedback here.
We also can't speculate on what exactly iOS 7's new security features will actually do, all that's available is what has been said so far by Apple, anyone using a developer version is forbidden to discuss it anywhere but in the developers community.

  • IPod randomly freezes when playing tunes

My Ipod 30gb randomly freezes during a song. Sometimes it freezes for a few seconds and sometimes it can freeze for a couple of minutes. It then just carries on playing.
It is not always the same song and can include songs purchased from Itunes as well as CD's downloaded - i.e. it is totally random.
All of the songs play perfectly on Itunes. I have only about half filled the iPid so am not really in the market to upgrade.
It has only started doing this about for the last two months.
Could some dust or something have got into the IPod or could it be a battery issue ( although I try to keep it at full ).
I have downloaded the lastest updates of software ( 1.3 ) and always click on the update software buttom when am synching. I have also done a restore and all the other troubleshooting bits to no avail...
    Help....

    Hi,
Well my friend got me an ipod 20gb 4th gen from ebay. It randomly froze and unfroze the eventually crashed and the HDD had errors, i couldnt connect it to pc it kept falling and showinfg errors but it sometimes loads and plays songs and frezzes but anyway i maneged to get it so it plays songs and restore it now i need to borrow a friends wall charger to finish its restore.... Listen to the hdd it should just be a smooth wirr if it wirs up and down like mine did (e.g. spin up and then off) its a HDD issues and u need to fix it soon. if under warranty take it to apple or pay to fix it. i have no idea how to solve it but this might help. try this..put it into diagnostic mode by resetting it, and then holding select and the back arrow select all test and it will tell you if has issues.
diognosis test and what they mean
    A. 5 IN 1: This runs the following 5 tests at once (J through N as listed below): LCM, SDRAM, RTC, FLASH/CHECKSUM, and FIREWIRE/FW ID. If you have a 3G iPod, at the end of the test, your buttons will now play a series of sound effects.YOU MUST PRESS ALL BUTTONS WHOTH IN % SECS SO IT CAN CHECK THEM
    B. RESET: Can your iPod reset? Run this test and find out.
    C. KEY: After you start this test, you need to press all the buttons on your iPod within 5 seconds. If you don't do it fast enough, it will fail.
    D. AUDIO: Plug in headphones, but don't expect an electronic rendition of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. This test checks the audio subsystem. You will see a message that says "0X00000000 DONE" if your iPod passed the test.
    E. REMOTE:
This will test your iPod's Remote if you have one. Plug it in or the test result will be "RMT FAIL".
F.FIREWARE: Checks your iPod's FireWire port. A successful completion of the test will return "FW PASS".
    G. SLEEP: Will put your iPod to sleep. You will need to reset your iPod to wake it back up.
    H. A 2 D: Tests the iPod's power. Your results should look something like this: "3.7V 0X000000E2 CHG OK FW 1 BAT 1". The results will be different depending if your iPod is plugged into your computer, a wall outlet or is just running off battery power.
    I. OTPO CNT: Tests your scroll wheel. Results are returned in hexadecimal.
    J. LCM: The LCM is your iPod's screen. Keep pressing the "Select" button to toggle through several pattern tests.
    K. RTC: Tests the iPod's built-in "Real Time Clock".
    L. SDRAM: The RAM memory test. Hopefully it will tell you "PASS"
    M. FLASH: Your iPod has built-in Flash memory that stores firmware information. This test will tell you what Firmware version you have installed.
    N. OTPO or
Wheel A2D: Tests the A2D (analog to digital) input of your iPod's scroll, touch or click-wheel. You need to reset your iPod to exit this test.
    O. HDD SCAN: Scans your iPod's hard drive. This is a great way to see if you have a healthy iPod. This test will take a few minutes so be patient.
    P. RUN IN: Tests your iPod's chip sets continuously.
Try all test and try another hard rest and resotre even though you have if game andd no how open ipod dissconnect battery to hdd lead and leavee for 20 mins or discharge ipod and charge then see if it fixes it or clean ipod out being carfull not to break or touch anything
    hope this helps....
