I need to disable spotlight sometimes.

Like when I boot from a clone just to run Disk Warrior on another Mac, and Spotlight starts indexing the Mac, which can take hours on a Pismo, for example. Why is Spotlight forced upon us at all times? I can easily imagine several situations in which it could interfere and cause errors, with backup drives, for example.

so being in tiger the second time (the first time already lead to a total disc crash thanks to spotlight , of course i cant prove that) i find some useful hints here including spotless and easy find. i just dont understand why apple forces us to use things we dont need. at least they should allow us to have options like with spotless when introducing new, insecure technologies. i new very well from using mail in 10.2.8. that the whole work can be blocked through those indexing procedures, especially if you dont have the newest mac and a lot of data. so i switched to another mail prog and avoided tiger until today. now i cant avoid tiger any more if i want to use pro tools 7 or logic 7.2 (which is a shame, especially in the logic case) and now i have to deal with that indexing **** again. this is totally unproductive and hinders me from doing work.

I am working on an Group Policy Administrative template for Wetdog.exe, and it's awesome by the way. Just want to know what function to use (listed in "about:config" url) so i can turn this feature off entirely.
I don't want my users deleting browsing history, or have any ability to view it either.
Still, i want the browser to keep at least 30 days of history.
This is EASILY accomplished in Internet Explorer via GPO, but not so much in Mozilla with wetdog.exe and it's admin templates. I am using Windows Server 2003 enterprise edition R2 on 2 domain controllers, and Windows XP Professional SP3 client workstations with Mozilla 3.6.3 and the latest version of Wetdog.exe and it's admin templates.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

It can be annoying, but I think their motivation is good. They are trying to make things better for their customers and I think they have, even though sometimes it is annoying. I think it would be nice if they would advise us when the pages are going to be down for maintenance, In the mean time, you could have another E mail account so you can always get access to your E mail.

Disabling spotlight for Time Capsule

Hi,
I need to disable (please do not ask the reason, I just need) indexing for backups on the Time Capsule. I know that the help on Spotlight says Time Machine needs spotlight bla bla... and, it can't disable indexing for this. I just don't beleive it, because when I disable spotlight for good with the following command:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
time machine continues to function just fine. Everything seems perfect as far as the time machine is concerned. However, other apps (like Mail) which relies on spotlight for searching forced me to reenable the spotlight (with the following command) with tears in my eyes:
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
So, please help me to find a workaround for disabling spotlight/indexing just for time machine.
By the way I tried the following methods without any success, so do not bother to recommend them:
1) Including TM volume and/or Backup directory in the TM volume to the privacy list of Spotlight
2) sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/VolumeName and sudo mdutil -E /VolumeName
3) Erased .Spotlight-V100
4) touch .metadata_never_index in the root and/ot Backup directory of time machine volume
5) creating a dummy file named .Spotlight-V100
[rebooted in all instances...]
PLEASE HELP

So, you've read through the FAQs and couldn't find a solution, eh? Sorry, but I don't use TM nor do I muck with CLI commands that I don't fully comprehend. You'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to pop in.

Certain key commands in Photoshop/Illustrator activate Spotlight when I don't want it activated.
Frankly, I never use Spotlight anyway. If I need to find anything, Apple-F suits my needs perfectly well.

Unfortunately the people who drop into threads with arcane terminal commands don't seem to realize that the vast majority of users do NOT want to deal with a command line. You are correct to be terrified of Terminal if you don't know precisely what you are doing. There are free utilities to accomplish almost anything a terminal session can do. One such utility is Onyx and the latest version can disable Spotlight if you so choose. These utilities basically enter the unix commands for you by just clicking the desired action. You do not have to futz around with the Terminal application.
But take a closer look at Mike N.'s advice first.

Not sure where you read that but it is false. There is no need to disable anything before doing any "Updates".
It is always a good idea to do a Time Machine backup before you do any major updates and Especially when doing UpGrades so you can Roll back to that TM backup if the "UPGRADE" fails or causes problems.

PCI compliance, need to disable SSL version 2

I'm running OS X 10.7.2 and I recently failed my PCI compliance scan. I was informed that I have SSLv2 and SSLv3 and that I need to disable SSLv2. The company that performs the scan says that they can't help me do it and that I should call my ISP, ATT Uverse. I've done this and spent several hours being bounced around and they don't seem to understand what I'm talking about or how to fix it. So...my questions is how can I disable SSLv2?? I'm not very "code" savy so if you could walk me throught the steps that would be very helpful. I really don't wnat to try tech support with ATT again! TIA

Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Drag or copy -- do not type -- the following line into the window, then press return:
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple/ {print $3}'

Can you disable Spotlight?

I've long ago disabled the Dashboard function via an option in the OnlyX program as I never used it and the whole "widget" thing seems pointless to me.
Is there a way to disable Spotlight which is not permanent and reversible as I rarely use the Spotlight function and have read on various forums that the Spotlight application is a bit of a memory hog and by disabling it can improve overall performance, is this true?
I'm sure there's some plug-in/ application that can do the job, but I'd rather not have to buy a software bundle and that most probably can be done in the Terminal window.

Actually there is another way you can disable Spotlight. You'll need to use Terminal.
To disable Spotlight permanently type:
% sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
To disable Spotlight without doing it permanently:
% sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
To enable it permanently:
% sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
To enable it without doing it permanently:
% sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

User Settings in ALV - need to disable

Hi - I need to disable the user settings for ALV, I try from if_salv_wd_std_functions ~ set_dialog_settings_allowed( abap_false ) but is working fine for the screen, if I go to the column and do right click, the user settings are enable at the column level.
Is there any way I can disable the column user settings?

Hi Jason,
I simply set the WDDISABLEUSERPERSONALIZATION parameter of my component's apllication to 'X' and now i don't see the usersetting option when I right click even on the column of the ALV. You can try that.
To do so: double click on your application, go to the parameters tab, make it editable, in the parameters column get 'WDDISABLEUSERPERSONALIZATION' parameter and set its value as 'X'.

I'm looking for a script or Policy whatever to hide/disable spotlight on a client. Iam using WGM for policy's to disable some applications, but I can not find an option disable spotlight on a client. I hide a lot directory's systemfiles but if I type in the spotlight "terminal" on the client and click on it the terminal will start.
I've 400 iMacs on a school it makes me desperate.

One possible solution might be to change the permissions on the Spotlight app on all client machines. The command would be:
sudo chmod 600 /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search
That way only root can run Spotlight. One may be able to roll that out via a startup script, too.

I see how to disable the Options button, but I don't want to do that. I only need to disable the Internet Options menu item. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

All I can say is that if that's an absolute requirement, CHM isn't your thing. That option is simply part of the CHM viewer application that Microsoft is in control of. No way to change that to my knowledge,
