I need to hard reset a Palm TX but the Power button does not function.

I need to hard reset my Palm TX but the Power button does not function. Is there any other way to perform the hard reset or otherwise delete all of my data?

Hi,
PowerBtn from the Canuck Software HomePage.
NOTE: This is Not a Blazer friendly download and only for downloading using a Chunky Computer thingie.
http://www.canuck-software.ca/
PowerBtn will allow you to set a HardButton to turn the TX on and off in the same fashion as the PowerButton, if you want.
This setting will remain active while 'Enable' on the PowerBtn screen is active.
The user can select 'Disable' on the PowerBtn screen.
The setting will survive a Soft Reset. (Hi PG )
If the Palm PowerButton fails completely then you will not be able to do a Hard Reset.
The PowerBtn app has a 'Hard Reset button' which you tap and after a time countdown (you can cancel in this time) it will perform a Hard Reset. This is the same as the Hard Reset app mentioned above.
The 'Enable' and 'Disable' mentioned above do not affect the 'Hard Reset button'
NOTE: PowerBtn also has a 'Program itself becomes power button' feature but I do NOT recommend you use this.
If you enable this you will not be able to change the setting or use the 'Hard Reset button' because when you Tap on the PowerBtn Icon the TX will turn Off. The only way to change the setting or use the 'Hard Reset button' would be to Delete PowerBtn then install again.
You can also turn your TX On by pushing the 5WayNav Select (middle button) to bring up the clock then double push it. The TX will stay on at the same place it was in when you turned it off, in the same way it would if you used the Power Button
All the best, woz of oz

  • Is there a way to do a soft reset when the power button does not work?

After needing to enact my replacement repair warranty, I received a device (smae one and same serial) but the screen had unresponsive spoots, and dim spots, I decided to turn right around and send it back again.  I got a replaced screen again, but this time my power button doesn't work.  Now, this isn't too inconvenient for me except that I cant do a soft reset or power off/on in order to clear the cobwebs from time to time.  Does anyone know of an app, or another way to do this?  I'm simply afraaid of what iddues it may come back with if I send it in a 4th time.
    So, App?
Or, maybe a special keybaord combo I can put in like on phones? (IE  ##XXXXX#

To remove the Restrictions passcode, you need to restore the phone as a new device using iTunes. Hit the "Restore" button on the Summary Pane.

  • Kernel Panic: You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer.  I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro.  I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory.  My wife first noticed a problem with the display.  Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable.  The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer.  The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what.  Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic.  The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget.  It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc.  I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop.  He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other.  I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out.  Everything appered to be connected properly.  Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue.  So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire...  I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable.  I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive.  I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button).  The computer magically started up!!!  I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3.  I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive.  After some time the computer froze.  I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic.  I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze.  I managed to run Disk Utitlity.  I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine.  After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install.  Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again.  Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message.  Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc.  I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely.  I set up the computer as a new computer.  He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had.  He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure.  When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously.  Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze.  The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below.  After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately.  After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one.  Now the computer will not boot via any method.  It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down.  I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times.  I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference.  I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
    1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
    3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
    4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
    5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out.  I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer.  I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer.  If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else.  Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
    Thank you!

I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card.  I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012.  I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store.  I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no.  He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime.  When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board.  I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses."  I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it.  I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds.  Again...thank you both!

  • "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for seve..."

    Hello,
I have recently been getting this same message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." whenever I start up my computer. It happens about 95% of the time. I have been reading on different forums that I should reset the PRam and the NVRam and I have been doing so and it does help as it does EVENTUALLY start up (sometimes takes me 5-10 min. to get it to start up).
I have also read that it may be the RAM that is loose, so I did check that and made sure that the ram is properly placed (which it is).
I don't know what else I can do. Should I reformat and reinstall Mac OS X?
Here is the exact error form the dump:
    IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 64:87
    AppleACPIPlatformExpert::start failed
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x55c095): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"Macbook 2,1\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.26/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
    Debugger called: <panic>

Well just got around to installing the new HDD and RAM yesterday, and I am sad to say... that the problem persists. :/
I reseated the memory and made sure they were in there properly, and I also installed the HDD and ran DiskUtility before I erased/reformatted and installed a fresh version of MacOSX Leopard, then updated to Snow Leopard.
As long as I am using my computer everything works fine, the problem occurs when the machine is shut off or put to sleep for a long period of time. Because when I shut it off and turn it right back on a few minutes later it works, or if I shut the lid and open it 10-20 min. later everything works fine, it's only when the machine is off or asleep for long periods of time.
So, I do not know what else can be wrong.
Should I try to take out the old RAM and just leave the new module in and see if that works out? See if that specific module is faulty?

Tried all of the recommended resets and combinations mentioned, but the ipod is still not recognized.  Genius at apple said it may be a hardware error, "The button is broke" but all of the buttons and cords work and i proved it to him. He then said he doesnt know, ma Now what?

If it does not work on other computers then I agree with the Genius

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?

Place the iOS device in recovery mode usning this program and then then restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • My apps on my iPod touch only open for a second then close, I tried the reset option of holding down the power button for ten seconds still no apps that I have down loaded will open just the one that are on the iPod like music app store whether time etc.

My apps on my I pod touch will not open.  They start to load for one second close down.  I tried holding down the power button to reset it.  And that didn't work. Is the only option is to delete all apps and then reload them?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • What caused "You need to restart your computer.  Hold down the Power button for several seconds or push the restart button."

This was displayed in four lanuages.  When I restarted I was asked to submit an error report.  The gave programmer details and indicated my OS 10.4 had quit.  I was reading a news article on DailyMail.co.uk at the time.
I ran a Sophos antivirus scan on the whole disk and no threats were identified.
This has apparently happened a couple times previously.  I thought the computer had not booted up properly since it had a black box where this message appeared and the machine was unresponsive.
Any suggestsions for cause and/or solution.

Apple won't work on it anymore. And, take it from me (hard experience: three boards changed and the G5 finally croaked from the graphics chip problem) you don't want to bring it to an AASP either, because if they are able to get a new logic board from Apple, it will croak in short time also. These were not refurbed properly. And, by now, the caps on a refurbed board will be ancient, anyway. In addition, there is a serious potential issue with the graphics chip. There was a repair extension in effect for both issues, the caps and the chip, but it's long since gone.
There might also be bad caps in the power supply.
Those three bad caps, and possibly others, are enough to bring this machine down.
There are some delicate soldering skills involved in replacing the caps. Most people with experience recommend practising first on a disposable board.
You can get a set of the caps which will fit properly from

There's also badcaps, who I think will work on these.

And there are one or two others who will do the repairs. I can't remember right now, but I'll look into it and post here again, probably tomorrow.
Basically, I don't think you want to put any big money into this.
EDIT: just remembered another. There was another one located in Oregon and I think he's now out of business.

Get the caps and maybe have some local guy work on it.

I am unable to power up my Mac pro desktop. I have tried resenting the smc and still does not work...any suggestions?

The warranty is worldwide. You should not need your receipt, Apple will have a purchase record - or at least a manufacturing date record and you should not be even close to the end of the one year warranty.

  • I've reset my iPod but the Apple logo does not go away

I 've reset my iPod - the Apple logo has been displayed for over 10 minutes.  Is this normal?  Should I plug it back into iTunes?

The iPod firmware is corrupted and you need to go into DiskMode and Restore the firmware.

  • When I boot up my machine, the apple logo comes up and the little pinwheel comes up as if it is loading up. Then another screen comes up stating "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds...." any thoughts?

I have already tried to start in safe mode. No go. I tried the single mode option as well. Volume ok. I don't have the os x disc. The computer was given to me because they could not fix the problem. Not computer smart. Does anyone have any ideas?

Apple may still supply the original restore CDs/DVDs for a nominal fee.  Have your serial number and model information available when you call them. You do not have to be the original owner.

  • HT1551 My iTunes music library disappear from my AppleTv 1rst generation, and would not accept it back. The Video part works find, but the Music part does not. I reseted to Original factory settings, but still has same problem. Any body has any suggestion

I have a 1rst generation Apple TV and My Music disappear; after trying several times trying to get My Music back, I opted by resetting it back to Original settings with no avail. The video part is find, all my movies are there, but when it comes to the Music nothing shows up.
Does anybody know what could be happening here and have any suggestions how fix it ?

So, when you go to Devices->AppleTVname->Music in the left panel of iTuens, you have:
    1. "Sync music" checked
    2. Either "All songs and playlists" or "Selected playlists" plus actual playlists selected
    Correct?
And of course, in those actual playlists, there is music?
Is htis iTMS purchased music, or mp3's?

  • I need to reinstall lion but the control-r does not work

My Macbook is about 3.5 years old and runs with Lion.  The System Preferences froze what in the process of changing the decktop wall paper. So I forced quit and repaired permissions/rebooted.  That did not clear up the problem and I tried Verify Disk.  The result showed that the is a HD corruption and I need to reinstall an O/S before I can repair the disk with the Disk Unitlites.
However, I purchased Lion through the App Store and the instructions state that I need to press Control-R to get the Apple menu that will start the process. ("OS X Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery HD. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up.") This doesn't work but I wonder if that means hold these keys down WHILE or AFTER the restart happens.
    Please advise...
    M

Control was a brain freeze... I meant command.... Bygones.
I did get it working and Lion is now reinstalling. The time estimate started at five hours but it's, thankfully, going faster than that.
    I appreciate the help guys!
