  • Installing an HP Laserjet 4050 printer on Windows 7

I have an old HP4050 laserjet which has had light use and thus has plenty of life left in it.   Until recently it was connected to a Windows XP PC's parallel port.   It was also used over a network by Windows 7 PCs using the HP PCL5 universal driver.
I have now reconnected it to the parallel port of a PC running Windows 7 (SP1) x32.   I have installed the PCL5 universal driver - but I cannot get it to print.  I had to buy and install a parallel port card, as the PC didn't come with one - I haven't been able to test this separately so there is a small chance this could be faulty, even though it is brand new.
Bizarrely the driver configuration panel appears to be picking up the configuration of the printer - it knows for instance that a duplexer unit is installed.   And yet it won't print from any application - nor will it print a test page.
Any ideas how I can sort this?
    thanks
    Richard

    Hi MAX22,
Even though it's your computer but your user account might not have sufficient privileges to install the software.
    Please try the following :
    > Enable the hidden Admin Account on Windows 7 ( Ref :  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-wi ndows-vista/ )
Reboot and try installing in the new enabled Admin user account and check.

But APEX learning software does a check to see if my system has Adobe Reader and it says I still need to install it. What's up? This has happened to me numerous times throughout the years. I need to get to the bottom of this problem. Thanks for your help.

You still don't give us the message you are receiving.  My guess: you are trying to open a PDF in a browser that uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • HT4651 Mac OSX 10.8.4: I found Java visualvm on my applications through utilities. When I try to open, it says I need to install a runtime.  should I dump this? Is it safe?

I'm a Mac OSX 10.8.4 (i-mMac): I found Java visualvm on my applications through utilities. When I try to open, it says I need to install a Java 6 SE runtime.  Should I dump this java even if I don't use the runtime? I've heard all Java is unsafe. What do you think?

Java has had extremely serious issues with security on Macs for more than a year at least. It has been responsible for most of the malware that has infected Macs since early spring of 2012. Patches have been issued now and then, but Java is so full of holes that this hasn't really helped. (Often, new vulnerabilities have been found and exploited the next day.)
It is true that there haven't been any KNOWN Java exploits on the Mac in a few months. (I stress the word "known," because a lot of the malware over the last 6 months has been targeted very tightly on specific individuals or small groups, making it harder to discover.)
Bottom line, you should not trust Java in a web browser at this point. If you must use it, you should take great care.
That said, Java is fine to use for running apps on your computer. (Just as fine as running any app.) It is only really dangerous when enabled in the web browser. You can install Java if you need to, as long as you disable it in your web browser.

  • Installing multiple copies of one printer (HP1102W) on the same computer

OK here is the setup, we have an activity that needs, useing multiple computers, to support 2 different locations with the same physical printer, in this case the HP1102w.
Our computers are running Window 7.
We will move the printer between the locations for use on different days of the week and want to avoid reinstalling the print driver each time we change sites.
Each site has its own wireless network with the same basic wireless network setup (ip address etc , open network). Fortunately the same IP subnet 192.168.1.0 but with different SSIDs.
We have setup the printer at both locations but we have to make configuration changes to the setup to support the different SSIDs which is a pain that is subject to errors.
What I am thinking of doing is to install the printer at each location using the smart install. This will create two different instances of the printer on each machine.  Is this possible or will they get in each others way?
Can I do this and then just change which printer is the default machine at that site?
    Will this work???
If not what alternatives do I  have.
    Thanks
    Marty K

I think theoretically that will work.  You will just have to reconnect the printer to the router each time.

  • Connecting a 1994 HP Laserjet 4MP printer to my new iMac

Hello all. I just recently bought a new iMac, and I am having difficulty getting an older HP Laserjet 4MP printer to communicate properly with the iMac. I originally thought that I needed a parallel to usb cable, so I bought one of these, but the computer would work briefly for one print out and then fail to print again. I then read the printer's manual, and it indicates that if you are going to connect the printer to a macintosh computer you need to use a standard 8 pin localtalk cable. I still have my original localtalk cable from when I used to use this printer with an older powermac in the early 90s, but I cannot find on the internet, or in any stores, a female 8 pin to usb adapter.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what I might try, or perhaps recommend a place to purchase the correct adapter / cable? I really like this printer and it has been working great, so I hate to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for any replies you all have. If I cannot come up with a solution I might just buy a new printer.

    D. P.
I wouldn't bother with any 8 pin arrangement as that is putting a further complication in the chain.
The Keyspan USB to parallel adaptor cable is on this page.
    http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Parallel.spml
I have used this cable on three Mac OS's (10.2, 10.3 and10.5) without the need to load any driver for it. The Mac seems to know what it is.
However, if you can send a page to the printer with what you have, then I am unsure, if what you have is sufficient, or if the keyspan version somehow handles the Input/Output data transfer better.
I am reluctant to advise you buying this if it is not going to change anything without first investigating if the driver you are using is causing this one page then stop behaviour.
When you click in Print and Fax, highlight the HP and where is says Kind it may say
Generic postscript Printer, whereas it would be better if if said GutenPrint v5.13.
However I did not have to do anything to get this setting, Leopard just found it.
You could select the printer again, with it switched on and in the left hand panel, control click and choose Reset printing System, as this may reset the driver to GutenPrint.
If that fails to set it, click on *Open Print Queue* ... then Info, then click on Driver and select GutenPrint v5.13 from the list, and see how that goes.

i hav eprinter connected with router and have ip address aswell.
    need some help.
    thanks
    Aazam.

    Hi HP-M1
I understand you would like to setup the printer on the network and you have it connected by a ethernet cable with a valid ip address.
If the printer is still listed in devices and printers folder we can create a new port with the ip address. If not run the add printer wizard.
Go to start, devices and printers, right click the printer, go to printer properties, select ports tab, select new port, click standard tcp/ip address, next, type in the ip address for the printer, next, finish.
Make sure printer is online by right clicking the printer, show whats printing, click printer button at top of screen, make sure use printer offline isn't checked. If it is click it to uncheck it.
If you require further assistance please provide the following so I can assist you better.
What operating system are you using? (winxp, win7, win8, win8.1)
What is the printers ip address?

  • Can't install drivers from HP for laserjet 1022 printer on my new computer with Windows 7.

I have a laserjet 1022.  I can't install the HP drivers provided on the HP website onto my new computer.  When it asks me to connect the printer, the printer is recognized, however the message continues to say waiting for the connection.  I have tried all of the suggestions listed on the forum by both HP and other individuals, including down loading the drivers from other countries.  Other attempts when downloading the drivers ends up with a message saying that the download could not be completed.  I have tried other USB cables and that doesn't work.  I love HP products but I really need help on this one.  HELP!

    Hello DayTrader,
When you connect the printer and if the message continues to say "Waiting for Connection", please try the below step..
Go to Device Manager, ( to do so , Right click on Computer icon, Select Manage, from the left pance m click on Device Manager , which would display the Device Manager on right pane.)
There should be Yellow bang entries ( Yellow ! mark ) with printer name on it.
Right Click on each of them and select Update Driver.
Select "Browse my Computer for driver software "
Click on Browse button to point to the CD ( if you are using the CD to run the installation ) else copy the path where the drivers have been extracted if you had downloaded it. Usually it will be in folder with name starting 7z... under TEMP folder .
    Then Click Next button .

  • Replacing HD With SSD, Need To Install OS X (Not Clone Old HD) On New SSD

    Hello All!!
I am getting a new Samsung 830 series 256GB SSD today which I am going to put in my 2011 (late year) MacBook Pro 15". I would like to put the new SSD in with a fresh installation of OS X (I don't want to clone my old hard drive). Can anyone please outline the steps to do this or put a link to a web page that explains it in nice simple terms?
I have tried searching around but I can't seem to find any page that is helpful. I did find one website that explained how to put the OS X on a USB flash drive. They said to download OS X from the App Store but when I checked it was like $27. I don't want to pay for a newer version of OS X I just want to put a fresh install of the version I already have (10.7.5) on the new SSD.
    Thank you!

Believe it or not, a clone of your old boot drive onto a blank powered, Disk Utility formatted GUID / OS X Extended (Journaled )external drive is the safest choice.
This gives you something to boot the computer with in case of trouble with the SSD, when formatting it and reverse cloning everything back on.
I know what you said, you want a clean install of OS X. However in 10.7 and later to install OS X fresh needs the Recovery HD partiton to be booted from, on the boot drive, to download 10.7 from Apple's servers.
So the object here is to clone your old boot drive clone to the formatted SSD of everything, OS X and Recovery Partition (plus any Apple hidden gems), then when that's completed, later boot into Recovery HD and wipe just the Macintosh HD partiton clean and clean install OS X there again.
There is only one software that can do this and it's Carbon Copy Cloner. Superdupes can't clone Recovery HD.
Just use the CCC's default setting to clone one drive to another. Hold the option key down while booting  to enter Startup Manager, where you can select which drive you want to boot from.
To first format any blank or soon ot be overwrtitten drive, use Disk Utility to select the entire drive and Partition: Options: GUID and OS X ext. jorun., as the format.
To erase the Macnitosh HD partition, hold command r boot from the SSD to enter Recovery HD and select the Macintosh HD partiton in Disk Utility to erase it. Then quit and floow the instructions to reinstall 10.7 fresh from Apple's servers.
