I need to make a pdf document, already made in photoshop, 'page turn' and then add it to my website as an e-brochure. I know I can do this in indesign but indesign will not open pdf files for some inexplicable reason. Any ideas how I can do it without completely starting again?

please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.

I need some (make that lots of) help with buttons
Hi,
I am a new designer and I am working on my first web site for free. It started out as something I was capable of doing but it has now expanded into a site that is challenging for me. Anyway, I am having a lot of confusion with with making flash navigation buttons for the site.
This is what the person wants. In the up state he wants the button label in text only. In the over state he wants the text with a gray line behind it that slowly expands onto the page. In the down state he wants the same thing but have the text color change and the line color to change. This line is also suppose to stay on the page until the user moves the mouse again. Ultimately the line should also stay fully extended for a sub-menu.
This is what I have done. I have been using action script 2 so I can use the behaviors panel. I made two different movie clips, one gray and one white, using shape tweens to slowly expand the lines.
I started out with the lable only and turned it into a button. It showed in the "up" section of the time line and I put a fram in the "hit" section (layer 1).
Next I inserted a new layer (layer 2) and put a keyframe in the over section of the timeline and made a gray box for behind the text and attached my gray movie clip to the end of it. I put layer 1 above layer 2 so that the text would show through. I did basically the same thing for layer 3 in the "down" section
except changed the colors to black and put a keyframe in layer 1 to change the text color.
Now this is what I get when I play the movie in flash. I have a button that the "hand" appears in only one very small section of it below the text. It does not appear when I hover over the text. When I "hit" the line keeps repeating the movie. I know this is a behavior but when I use the behavior panel to put in play and stop it shows the event as none. As for my black line in the down section, it plays so fast that it might as well not be there. How on earth do I stop it and get it to remain on the page? I also should tell you that I know very little about action script just in case that is the direction that I need to go.
ThanksYou'll probably have to spend some time learning how to create buttons and movieclips that do what you want, which is what you are in the thick of at the moment. For the small area you say reacts to the mouse, the Hit frame is used to define the area that you want to be reactive... so if you had a tiny dot in the normal frames, you could add a big dot in the Hit frame to make it easier to get the mouse to work with the button... the Hit frame content does not display.
For the movieclips, you need to add stop(); commands at the end of their timeines if you don't want them to loop.
Another approach you might consider is to create your buttons as movieclips rather than as button symbols. Going this route gives you much more control of how things behave, but does involve some actionscript to make them behave as if they were buttons for the various states. Some people do not use button symbols and will only use movieclip versions of them. -

Apple claims that because I did not drain my battery frequently and kept it plugged in for extended periods of time, that it is my fault the battery is failing. I disagree because I was not ever told to consistently drain my battery before recharging or not to keep it on and plugs in for extended periods of time. I do keep my desktop computer on most of the time and that is why I have kept my Macbook air on for extended time periods. I feel that Applecare should cover this battey issue and not charge me for replacing the battey. I feel I should have been told to not keep my computer consistently running on with poweror the battery will fail. Has anyone had this problem? Apple should replace my battery under Apple care as my battery does not keep a charge anymore.

Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above: “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.

*If you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
And best "tip" is if its near a socket,...plug it in as long as you can (especially at home) since cycle count on the battery are the "miles that wear out the tires (battery)", however again, not plugged in all or most of the time.
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count. *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific. As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.

Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance. Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.

There is no way to export Faces information.

If space is an issue then move the whole Library to an external drive:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Am running Tiger 10.4.11; just got Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (regular OS disk, not upgrade). When I install Snow Leopard, will it wipe everything? overwrite Tiger? Do I need to make backups of applications and files to reinstall after Snow Leopard Loads? thanks!

No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...

But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
* Mac computer with an Intel processor
* 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

I received a PDF file containing 10 pages of a newsletter that needs to be turned into a book using InDesign. Is there a method that I may use to take the pages from this PDF file and make a book with 10 pages in InDesign?
for a 'simple' book:
create a new indesign document with 10 pages--uncheck facing pages in the setup dialog--set the page size, margins, bleeds--then--go to file>place>locate the PDF--check the checkbox that says 'show import options' choose 'media' from dropdown menu -- choose (pages) ALL-- double click the file name (the PDF)--this will load all 10 pages to your cursor--go to page 1--click with cursor (this will place page 1) go to page 2 and click, page 3 click, etc etc--you can go back and re-position the pages later...
note: if the plan is to print and staple the book, you will need 12 pages--and also note--the placed art will not be editable. -

It's not different from taking documents with you if you want to edit them.

How is it blocked. Is it not letting you access that site or is it the photos that are not loading?
If it is the photos not loading, with Shutterfly on display, click on the site identity button (for details on what that is see the [[site identity button]] article) and then on More Information. This will open up the page info dialog.
First select the Permissions panel, make sure that "Load Images" is set to allow (selecting Use Default should also work)
Next select the Media panel, then click on the first item in the list. Use the down arrow key to scroll through the list. If any item has the option "Block images from (domain name)" selected, de-select the option.
This should hopefully resolve your issue, but also see [[Images or animations do not show]].
Some add-ons can also block images, for example if you have AdBlock Plus installed, make sure that you have not accidentally created a filter to block the images.
