I need to move some flip videos to external storage.  What kind works w/ macbook?

My macbook gives me a messages saying my startup disk is almost full.  To free up some memory I wanted to move some flip videos to an external drive.  What kind is compatible?

MG,
What we might need to do is to change the question.  What computer do you plan to use the data on in the future?  For example, if you have a newer tower, just move the hard drive to the new tower.  If you want to use the data, what about an ethernet LAN to get the data over?  If you want to archive the data, how do you store the second drive?  What are your plans for the first drive?  If the new software will not recognize the old file type, the data must be exported.  Just getting files to another hard drive will not finish your journey.
As Allan said, knowing the exact model and year of your tower is important.  My suggestion is to find a user group near you.  Please post back with more information, including the name of a large city near you.
For example, our user group just experimented with a 1983 Apple IIc that predates the Mac.  It started right up, read files from 1984  and saved them from a 5.25" floppy to a 3.5" floppy.  That 3.5 floppy will go into a platinum G3 which will read PRODOS files using Apple File Exchange.  That G3, with a USB card, will allow saving the files to a USB flash drive.  But, somewhere along the way, some software has to read the file and convert it to data that is useable by current software.

    Yes, you could, because in this case you would have something like a backup in the cloud. BTW, personally I also like Flickr. Flickr offers you 1 TB (1000 GB) of free storage and automatic upload for photos since iOS 7 (it is a very attractive offer, at least for me)

    When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room. I have very little room left on the hard drive and need to move an iPhoto library.

    i have a lacie, and i encrypted it.  i had to wipe it, because it kept dropping off over and over and re-logging in.  so unencrypted i went.
    at some point it wasn't recognized at all.  sometimes disk utility would open it, but then it got to the point that it wouldn't recognize it either.
    i hadn't realized that the power supply was dysfunctional.  but i was able to recover it using disk warrior at the last deep breath it took.  the disk itself still works, but not in that housing.

    Ensure that the external is correctly formatted
    Drag and dropped the files

  • Need to move music from laptop to external hard drive

    My laptop is getting full. I need to move either some of my i-Tunes material to my external hard drive or all of it. I tried to click and drag it over but it would not go. I am a computer dunce so any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Iphoto: How to safely delete or move photos.  I have over 7000 photos.  When I deleted some, I found that the event still shows up with a blank frame.  Can I move some photos to an external hard drive but leave the pointer in iphoto?

    iphoto: How to safely delete or move photos.  I have over 7000 photos.  I would really like to move tsome of the older photos to an external hard drive. (They are backed up in Time Machine, but I like the immediacy of having them available.)  So question 1 -  is it possible to split the iphoto library so that the directory tree points to an external drive in some cases?  And if that doesn't work--I am willing to export and delete some of these photos.  However, an earlier delete left me with events that have a name in the event folder, but no photos.  Question 2 -- How do I properly delete photos so that all references disappear?
    example:

    Warning: Time Machine is not an Archiving application. It keeps rolling back ups. That means if you delete something from the source Mac it will eventually be also deleted from Time Machine. How long that takes depends on the amount of disk space TM has. So, remember, backing up in Time Machine is not the same as Archiving.
    For the blank thumbnails: This can happen if you try delete too many photos at one go. Experienced users suggest you should delete in batches of 100 or so.
    Yes you can split the Library, where some of the Masters are stored locally and some on an external disk, but really, you don't want to do that. iPhoto's file management tools are limited at best, and if the path to the files changes then you could find yourself repairing the links to the files - all of them, one by one.
    Better: Have your entire Library on an External Drive.
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    If you want to have a smaller library on your internal disk:
    Here's one way to do what you want:
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
    Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
    As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
    You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • In PSE8 I need to move some files into one file - how to do?

    When I added some photos of a trip from my camera to my PSE8 Organizer instead of going in as one file by date loaded they went in under separate files names. Now I have a large amount of files and want to move them into one file. How do I make a new file that I can move them to and how do I move them? Do I do this in photoshop or do I do this in windows My Pictures. I am using Win7.

    Can you give me a little more info please. When I click on the display button it shows some dropdown menus, what do I click on next? What left hand panel do you mean? I'm always nervous about clicking on things in PSE, it usually ends up changing everything around then I spend hours trying to get everything back to how it was. Thanks.

  • Help needed.. trying to display video to external TV

    Hey guys,
    I am trying to setup my T61P lappy to display video to my external TV via the VGA port. I was able to get  the desktop background to display on the Samsung LCD tv but could not see anything else such as desktop items.
    I set the laptop up using the fn-f7 option in presenter mode. Not sure what is going on here to not see info on my TV. was trying to watch a movie on the TV with no luck..

    I have a new Lenovo T61, that my company bought me, i personally have a Toshiba laptop , that has an S-video output on it, i have to, on occasion, run powerpoint from it to a TV. Where it then comes out of the TV. And into a projector, for some of the shows that we do. My , or there Lenovo, only has the female VGA. Output for another monitor, but the driver that is in my Toshiba appears to be the same as in the Lenovo T61, so where can i get a VGA to S-video, or RCA. cable, and will this work for the: Intel Graphics media Accelerator, 6.14.10.4860. It runs XP in it,because of all the private, programs that we have were written for XP. Please help! I.T. Is always to busy, and only the top guy seems to know what he is doing,  which means I just get someone who spends 4 hours, making calls to him, and then telling me, he will get back to me soon! HEEEEEEEEEElp! i'm not a real computer wizz, but i figured out how to do it on my Toshiba, so if i could find the cable i think i could get-r-done, I'm sick of using my computer, for there shows.

  • I need to move my ITUNES to an external harddrive.  I have a few questions based on what I have read.

    1.  I have the old style organazation, the ITUNES Music.  From what I have read I need to go to "Library" and first "consolidate" and then "reorganize".  Is that correct and do I need to worry about the order.  Or should I just check both boxes at the same time?
    2.  I understand I can either move the media or move the entire ITUNES file.  It seems it is better to move the whole ITUNES file.  Is that correct.
    3.  My understanding that if the external drive is disconnected, the links to the music could be broken.  The best thing to do is:
         A.  Set all ipods to manual update.  This will keep ITUNES from starting every time the IPOD/IPHONE starts up.
         B.  Move the entire ITUNES file.  This way it will start with a message that the Library cannot be found and one can just cancel the startup.
    Correct?
    4.  One will have to "tell" ITUNES where the new Library resides.  To do this in Windows, hold down the "alt key" and start ITUNES.  Correct?
    5.  Before starting make sure ITUNES is updated to the latest version.
    Is this pretty much the steps and have I missed anything.  I just want to make sure I am doing this correctly so that I don't screw up my links and have problems with ITUNES finding my music.
    Thanks for any comments or feedback.

    As far as I know there is no reason not to tick both boxes (if available) then click OK. Once the library has been "Rearranged" that option becomes redundant. Once the process is complete you can close iTunes, rename the folder iTunes Music as iTunes Media and start iTunes again. iTunes should automatically correct the media folder preference to match the new location but double check under Edit > Preferences > Advanced.
    2.  I understand I can either move the media or move the entire ITUNES file.  It seems it is better to move the whole ITUNES file.  Is that correct.
    Yes.

         A.  Set all ipods to manual update.  This will keep ITUNES from starting every time the IPOD/IPHONE starts up.
    Not necessary, when your devices are connected you can however untick Open iTunes when this device is connected and under Edit > Preferences > Devices tick Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.
       B.  Move the entire ITUNES file folder. This way it will start with a message that the Library cannot be found and one can just cancel the startup. (Then connect the drive and start as normal)
    Correct.
    4.  One will have to "tell" ITUNES where the new Library resides.  To do this in Windows, hold down the "alt key" and start ITUNES.
    Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you start iTunes, keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the folder you have moved/copied to your external drive.
    5.  Before starting make sure ITUNES is updated to the latest version.
    No strictly necessary. The steps for moving an iTunes library have remained stable over many builds. Consolidate & rearrange as in step 1, either move or copy the entire iTunes folder to the new location, then connect with the shift-start iTunes method. Copy is slightly safer. Once you are happy it is all working you should ideally backup the new version of the library before deleting the original.

  • Help needed to move 2 libraries onto an external harddrive.

    Hi I have 2 iTunes libraries, one for my iPhone and one for my iPad. I organised my life this way so it was simple and I didn't have to faff around (besides I'm not too great at technical stuff!!). I am at a stage now where my iTunes (both libraries) has taken a huge amount of space and I want to move it onto an external hardrive. What's the best way to do this?
    Many thanks in advance

    Two libraries is about the most complicated way to organize things.  It sounds like you have multiple copies of some if not all of the media in two or more locations which is what is taking up space.  Again, this is about the most complicated and least intelligent way of managing content on devices.
    Simply create one library and manage the content on the devices by playlists.
    Regardless, moving iTunes libraries is as simply as moving the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the current location to the new location.  Then while holding <SHIFT> launch iTunes.  When prompted, choose the option to select the library and point iTunes to the new location.

  • I need to move my profile to an external drive but the edits I make to the profile.ini file don't seem to be working

    I am using a Mac, and need to have my profile be on an external drive. I edit the profile.ini file per the instructions I found here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb
    but it's not working. I must have the path wrong. Again, I am using a Mac. Here is the info in the profile.ini file:
    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile=1
    [Profile0]
    Name=default
    IsRelative=0
    Path=Macintosh%HD/My%20Passport/Thunderbird/Profiles/o6fqy09d.default
    Default=1
    Do you see anything about the path that looks incorrect? The "My Passport" is the external drive.
    Also, if there was an updated disk image for Portable Thunderbird, I could try setting that up but all I can find is a very old one which I tried but it won't update.
    Thank you,
    Todd

    The "My Passport" external drive must be mounted somewhere in the file system. That's the path you need to use.

    If you just dragged files to the external HD, this should not result in files appearing in the trash, unless there are other steps you haven't told us.
