I need to open document of unknown origin

I have several old word processing files that won't open with anything I have: Word, Pages, TextEdit, etc. When I try top open in TextEdit all I get is extensive paragraphs of gibberish.
These are old. I believe I might have been using Nisus at the time.
Any ideas on how I can open these?

Thank you very much! This confirms me that I need to open itunes in my account to let the others access to my library and playlists. This helps to understand how it works but it doesn't make me happy. I don't always have my account active, even less itunes open. I expected that it could work like iphoto, that all the users can access, independently if the I'm logged in or not.
It's an improvement suggestion to Apple, to make itunes libraries work like iphoto.

If you're pretty sure that they're Nisus files, about the only option you have is to go to Nisus.com, download their free trial of Nisus Writer Pro or Nisus Writer Express, and see if it will open and save older Nisus files.
Here's what's in their support FAQs:
What happens to my old Nisus documents in the new version? Will Nisus Writer Express be able to read them?
Nisus Writer Express is able to read the text layer of your classic Nisus Writer documents.
If, by chance, you open an older Nisus Writer Classic file (any file created by Nisus Writer version 3.4 (which still runs in OS 9) through 6.5), we call it untitled on purpose so as to protect your earlier work. Give the file a new name and leave the old one on your hard drive for a later version of Nisus Writer Express.
As we add features to Nisus Writer Express, those Nisus Writer Classic documents that used those features (for example: graphics on the graphics layer and cross references) will open correctly in Nisus Writer Express.

I'm not sure what you mean by it making accessing files more complicated. I have both Pages 4.3 & Pages 5.1 icons in my Dock as well as Numbers 2.3 & Numbers 3.1. I continue to use the iWork '09 versions for my everyday needs. As long as the new versions are in your Applications folder & the '09 versions in the iWork '09 folder, Software Update will not have a problem updating them even if Apple should come out with a new update for the '09 versions.
Because I have moved the new versions to an external drive & renamed the apps because I want '09 to be the default apps, I do have to remember to move them back to my applications folder & restore the original names before updating. But since you like the new versions this "complication" doesn't apply to you.

You won't be able to buy Pages from the Mac App Store on 10.6.8. You need to reload it from the original source.

I just got my mac a month ago so go easy on me but I was just working with the pages that was already on it, and then today I know it updated, and now I am unable to open a lot of my documents!:( Idk what you mean by the icloud version lol sorry! As for the version, when I open pages from my apps and click 'about' it says version 5.1? And when I open the document it just goes grey and kind of blinks and doesnt open? You have two versions of Pages on your Mac & are trying to open Pages 5 documents with Pages 4. Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.

Well, here's what I found out that works for me...
I had a Pages icon on my dock, and launching it brought up version 4.3. But I went to my Apps folder and found the new updated icon there and when I launced that it brought up version 5.01. So apparently the Apple update process left two versions launchable on my iMac. Weird...

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

You can add the icon of the missing Pages on your Dock or open Pages from the Apple menu > Recent Items list.
Or you can archive Pages 5 so that it doesn't automatically open.
If you are unhappy about this review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store.

The documents I’m trying to read are already saved on my computer, under various different headings, I know that we have a server, so I only assume these documents are saved on here, as I said before I’m not good with all this techno stuff. I do my work each week ( on a payroll system) and save the documents for each company, they automatically go to the correct place. I never request for them to be saved in a certain place ( well not that I’m aware of) . I then on occasions need to open up this information, it is then that I can’t read or open the documents. We do have a tech help, but they are off sick until the 5th Jan, hence me trying to work out if I can fix this problem through this help site. Its ADOBE Reader that I’m trying to use.

Exactly the same by my iMac.

I can play the same video with VLC player but not with QuickTime.
QuickTime and iTune can not play anything at all.
VLC Player however can play all medias without any problem.
All my apps are uptodate.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got Pages 5.0, but you still have got Pages 4.3, so Pages 4.3 is being opened instead of the newest version, being this the reason why you get a message telling you to update Pages to the most recent version.
If you don't need the old version, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete the old Pages icon or move it to an external drive. I don't recommend you to do this, as users are complaining about the lack of features of the new version.
Instead, what you can do is to put the new Pages icon in the Dock by dragging it from the Finder window to the Dock, so you can open the new Pages version from the Dock and you can open all your documents with it after opening the application
