I need to re-install imovie

I deleted iMovie because it was frozen, while generating thumbnails, but I can't re-install iMovie.

You cannot lose your current projects or events by reinstalling.
Still, a good rule of thumb is, "If it is important, back it up."

  • Is it possible that my iMovie could be corrupted and needs a re-install?

I'm still struggling with multiple problems/issues. I recently imported video files that apparently +iMovie did not like!+ They imported with no apparant problem. Upon play back though, my entire computer froze.
I'm now having new problems, in that, If I try to import more than 3 clips at a time, my computer freezes up... (iMovie compatible clips, not the ones that made it crash).
As a test, I re-installed iMovie on another drive, and was able to successfully import the same group of clips (about 15 at once) that had caused the computer to freeze, without the computer freezing. Unfortunately though, the clips when viewed were jerky. This could be a result of this iMovie version being 7.1.1, not the most current version, which is 7.1.4.
This is due to an entirely different problem, in that, even though I have the most current version of Quick Time 7.5 (149.5), I wasn't able to down load the iMovie update for 7.1.2 or 7.1.4, because the download was stopped accompanied with a message stating that I needed Quick Time 7.5 to proceed, which as I stated, I already do have.
    Any advice or suggestions?
I'm just wondering if I somehow damaged the iMovie app. when I imported those unfriendly clips?

If you sent the iPhone to Apple to be refurbished, then the iPhone you received back is very likely NOT the phone you sent. Check the paperwork that came with the refurbished unit.

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.

  • After installing  iMovie 4 my Bookmarks have disappeared!

Actually, several things happened after installing iMovie. My ethernet adapter wouldn't work, but fixed that...kinda. It will now recognize my ethernet adapter if I plug it in after I boot. I also can no longer find my Download folder. There were three Download folders. One was the temporary one (I'm talking about that little Download window which pops up so you can see what you're downloading). Another one had all my downloads. Another, for some reason, had only 4 downloads from when I first began using the Powerbook 7 years ago. That one I can find. But the main one is gone. I just installed the update for iMovie (4.0.1) but that didn't do anything. Previous to installing iMovie I renamed my "Home" icon, but after the iMovie install it has reverted to the old name and when I try to change it back it says the name is already taken. I tried using Finder to retrieve the name I had changed the Home icon to, but it doesn't come up with anything. Is there a way to revert of they system settings before I installed iMovie 4?

I doubt that anything related to iMovie will fix your problem. iMovie has nothing to do with your ethernet adapter or with Safari's downloads folder and bookmarks. You probably need to go to the OS X discussion area.

  • Cannot install iMovie HD update 6.0.1 on my iMac G5

    Hi all -
I'm running on 10.4.5, and have iMovie HD 5.0.2 installed.
When I try to install iMovie HD 6.0.1, I get the alert "cannot install on this volume. An eligible iMovie HD application was not found in the location Applications/iMovie HD.app"
Did I miss the 6.0.1 boat by only having 5.0.2?
Do I need to purchase 6.0?
    Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    sirstewart,
Assuming you have an iMac with the built-in iSight, you're sort of right that you need iMovie HD 6.
Here are some workaround tips (admittedly not very satisfactory):
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051217210335199
iMovie HD 5 does work with the stand alone version of the iSight camera.
    My advice: Buy iLife '06!

  • Installing iMovie 7.0.1

I am trying to install iMovie 7.1.0. I have iMovieHD 6.0.3. When I try the install from iLife '08, I get the message: "You cannot install iMovie Update 7.1 on this volume. An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location / Applications."
The requirements for the install are iMovieHD 7.0.1. I cannot find any download sites for iMovieHD 7.0.1. Is there a work around for installing the latest iMovie (iMovie 7.1.0)?
I have OS 10.4.10 on a G4 DP 1.25 GHz with 2 GB RAM. Thanks very much.
    Eric

I have iLife '08. I bought it specifically to solve the iMovie upgrade issue I had. But the installer will not install iMove 7.1.0. When I try the install from iLife '08, I get the message: "You cannot install iMovie Update 7.1 on this volume. An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location / Applications."
The requirements for the install are iMovieHD 7.0.1. I have iMovie 6.0.3. I tried re-installing iMovie 6.0.3 from my iLife '06 disk and trying again to install iMovie 7.1.0 but I get the same message. I think I need iMovieHD 7.0.1. I cannot find any download sites for iMovieHD 7.0.1. Thanks for your help,
    Eric

  • Can't install imovie

I had it installed them when an update came up said I needed more space so opened up 1gb and uninstalled iMovie and now can't install at all - how large is the app??? I purchased it so would like to have it on

If iMovie 08 is not installed, you cannot install iMovie HD6 from the free download.
I don't think that this is correct. My iMac has the PowerPC chip, and therefore IMovie 08 could not be installed. Installation of the rest of the iLife 08 suite was completed without a problem. Once that was done, I learned (I forgot how) that I could get a free download of iMovie HD 6. The only difficulty that I encountered was what I described in my previous post, which was not finding the new program in the dock.

  • Having Trouble Installing iMovie 6 with iMovie 08

A few weeks ago, I had to take my computer into the Apple Store with some issues. They did archive & install but none of my applications were saved, so the only thing left on my HD was pre-installed applications. iLife '08 was there (and I've used all the programs multiple times) but I needed to reinstall iMovie 6. When I opened the pkg file, it tells me "Please install iLife '08 before installing iMovie HD 6."
Does anyone have any ideas why this could be happening?

    Welcome to discussions!
Another user had the same problem. he wrote:
+"This last suggestion of trashing the iLife'08 applications and receipts and then performing a reinstall worked. I was able to download iMovie HD 6. Not sure why the preinstalled iLife'08 was not being recognized but the reinstall did work.+
+For those following the thread from the beginning, doing an Archive & Install did fix my new User issue. Now when creating a new User, they have the same hard drive space as everyone else. I did try and download iMovie HD 6 after this step but before the trashing of the preinstalled iLife'08 (as described in the paragraph above) and that did not work.+
+Thank you to everyone that contributed; very much appreciated."+

  • Installing imovie 4 and imovie 5

I have imovie 5 installed and wish to try and install imovie 4 (reasons see below) and use both. I have read various posts about this which involve renaming the “current’ version and then loading the other. (Ideally, it seems, I should have renamed imovie 4 before loading 5 …).
    A. Should I rename imovie 5, then load 4? And does renaming 5 simply mean the ‘name’ in Applications or are there other bits that require the change?
    B. Alternatively, would it make sense to load imovie 4 onto another internal drive and run it from there?
Reasons: I have huge amounts (and I mean huge amounts) of video to edit, and I find the most efficient use of my time is to download a whole tape, during which time I go away and do other things. Then I do a very rough edit – cutting out ground shots, and other stuff I will never need. In the past under 4, this was easy enough and all I did was trash the rubbish – and in fact do a more detailed basic cut (no transitions of course) - leaving me with a manageable size file.
Now because 5 is non-destructive, I am left with very large files. To cut back I have to save relevant portions to another drive and then trash the original. However, of course this leaves the ‘new’ or ‘edited’ material as one clip which I then have to cut up again.
By using 4, I can do my cuts, then do the final edit in 5 (and eventually 6,7 8 etc).
While I understand all the arguments about non-destructive approaches, I still believe there should be an option to get rid of unwanted footage forever (after all, film studios traditionally throw away unused film that has ended on the cutting room floor!)
Yes, storage is much cheaper but I already have archived work filling two 250GB drives (I like a back-up). At my rate of usage, I reckon I will be buying two new 250 GB drives every three months – which isn’t so ‘cheap’ after all….
    All comments/suggestions appreciated.

Just an update to say I have achieved (mostly) success! I persisted (checked several other sites) and came up with a solution to reloading iMovie 3..
As I explained, when I first tried iMovie was greyed out on the original install disk (along with other iLife applications) when I tried to install even though I had moved iLife from the receipts folder.
So I tried agin, this time renaming Imovie HD as HD5, and moving iLife 5, and all imovie files from Library receipts to a new desktop folder. This time when I installed from the disk, I went to customize and this time, iMovie was not in grey (htough others such as iTunes, iDVD were still grey as might be expecetd! So I installed it succesfully. I then moved the the receipts back - though iMovie already existed in the Library! (I guess it went into Receipts from from the disk, thus creating a similar name!).
Where I was not so successful was that I was unable to upgrade to 3.0.3 - when I treid to install it, I got the message that no program could be found to update. As it is I am happy with being able to use 3.0.1 - though I have to admit I have not tried to download anything from my camera yet!
The point is really that I am getting there - I think! Hope it all makes sense.
Many thanks for your help. I may yet rewrite and post this advice again for anyone who might need it. What I now know is that in future, when I upgrade, I shall rename existing applications in iLife so that I have them in case I need them and don't have to go through the whole process again!

  • Installing iMovie HD 6

I have a new MBP and iLife '09. I absolutely hated the last iMovie ('08?) and very much liked iMovie HD. I have some family movie projects that I really want to continue with iMovie HD.
I have my original iLife '06 disk and wanted to just install iMovie HD. But when you select custom install, it has both iMovie HD and iDVD '06 grayed out, which I assume means that it will install both. Since I have iDVD '09 installed, I don't want to clobber it with an older version.
Somewhere I seem to have read that iMovie HD was downloadable from Apple's web site. I searched and see that there are downloadable updates but I don't see the real deal.
Anyone know if a) iMovie HD is downloadable or b) the standard install won't clobber iDVD '09?
    Thanks,
    Mike

The download links that you see on the Apple site are only upgrades from version 6 to 6.0.2 and 6.0.3
Generally the old iLife 06 disc has version 6 and you use those links to upgrade it to 6.0.3.
Now installing iMovie HD through the iLife 06 disc MAY affect your version of iMovie 09 and iDVD, however all you need to do is re-install iLife 09 and everything will be sweet again.

  • Cant install iMovie 6 owning iLife 08'?!

Hi, I own a Macbook purchased few months ago, just before the new line came out... :P.
On it I found pre-installed iLife 08' including therefore iMovie. I needed some features that were lacking on imovie 08', and seraching aroud this forum i found out that iMovie 6(having those features) was available for download to users owning iLife 08'. Excellent.
From this post (on which i also left a comment):
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8745892#8745892
I Found the link and downloaded it.
I tryed to install it but it said: "the installation cannot continue as I need iLife 08' installed".
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks.
Ps: i am not sure if this post will count as "double-post" having left a comment on the that link i just gave. If so I am sorry, I thought that being the question marked as solved it was closed.

    Thnx all!
I have done as suggested and all went fine!
Fortunatly i had already downloaded iLife06 HD before they removed the link from the site ;P
Firewire... I know some people really like it and am sure they have all the good reason in the world to do that. But so far, I have never used it in my all life.
    Thanks all again!

  • I can't install iMovie HD 6.0

    Help!
I already downloaded iMovie HD 6.0 but i can't install it. I says that i need to install iLife '08 first in order to install imove HD 6.0 but i already install iLife 08
All of my Idvd, Imovie, Itune etc are all 08 version so still, why i can't install iMovie HD?.......so what can i do??
I really need it ..... I think iMovie 06 is better than iMovie 08 because in iMovie 08, all of the effects and themes are gone.
    Thank so much
    =Biw=

    Hi Biw,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
I too had the same problem and now have the fix.
First make sure all applications are closed and go to: Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts
Delete the receipts that have to do with iLife: iWeb.pkg, GarageBand.pkg, etc. pretty much, the ones that start with i, even delete the itunes receipts. For example, iTunesX.pkg and empty trash.
Once you've deleted the receipts for the iLife '08 applications, go into your Applications folder and delete the actual iLife '08 applications as well: GarageBand, iTunes (you will not loose your music if you delete the application), iMovie, iWeb, iDVD, and iPhoto (You will not loose your photos if you delete the application) and empty your trash.
Next, restart your computer and after it restarts, put the iLife '08 DVD into your Mac and go through the installation.
After installation of iLife '08, you can run Software Update and get the first round of updates for iMovie, GarageBand, iPhoto, iTunes, etc.
After the first round of updates have been installed, try the iMove HD 6 installer again and it should work, It worked for me.
Once you install iMovie HD 6, you can grab the second round of updates for the iLife '08 applications through Software Update.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
    Hope this helps.

  • Install iMovie HD 6 on intel machine with iLife '09

I recently bought a new intel iMac with iLife '09 preinstalled. On my old PowerMac G5, I had iLife '08 installed as well as the free iMovie HD 6 for iLife '08 folks who didn't like the new iMovie. I prefer HD 6 so would like to continue using it. In order to install iMovie HD 6, I need to have iLife '08 installed in its entirety. Is this going to mess up my already-installed iLife '09? iMovie is the only app for which I want to use an older version.

iMovie 06.03 and iMovie 06.04 are believed to be the same program. Except in one area. iMovie 06.04 "looks" to see if you have iLife 08.
If you have iMovie 06.03 you should be able to just copy it onto your new Mac.
Look at what install disks you still have. Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up .pkg installer packages and lets you install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package.
If you have iMovie 06 you CAN download the upgrades for it from Apple.
Also post your question in the iMovie 06 area, you will find many iLife 09 / iMovie 06 users there.

  • I installed iMovie 05  but it replaced iMovie '08!

    Hi,
I needed to install an earlier version of iMovie to be able to make a clip with sped up footage. So I used my iLife '05 install disk and installed iMovie HD (5) but it overwrote iMovie '08! Argh!
Then I read that Apple allows people to download iMovie HD (6) so I have to have the full ilife '08 system for it to install alongside.
How do I remove iMovie '05 completely? Will I have to re-install iMovie '08 off my leopard disk?
If only speeding up/slowing down was in iMovie '08
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Rowan

You will need to reinstall iMovie 08. However, iLife 08 is not part of the Leopard system. You would have had to purchase it separately, so you should have the iLife 08 disk, and you can reinstall iMovie 08 from that. Then do any updates for it. You should find that your iMovie HD5 is now in a file that is named iMovie Previous version, or something like that.
Then, go here to download iMovie 6.0.4:http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Once that is installed, you can just delete the previous version folder with iMovie 5 in it.

  • I can't install imovie

I just went into the apstore to try and install imovie, but when i hit install it says i need 10.9.2 or later to install. all of my software is up to date. not sure what i can do about that. i dont have an old version or anything. i looked through the application folder and searched my finder
    anyone have ideas?

Back up your data and try upgrading to Mavericks. If you get told that the computer’s incompatible, install iMovie from the computer’s original disks or a retail iLife DVD.
