I need to recover my old home folder that was protected via FileVault

Hello,
One day last year, my PowerBook G4 up and died on me... that it would boot up nicely but it would not get to the log in screen. I pretty much assumed that the PowerBook G4 was DOA and I bought a 15" MacBook Pro a week later. Now, I had a lot of important files in my home folder (i.e. scan of a Canadian visa, a large music library, etc) that I wish to restore.
I've purchased an enclosure last week and I put the hard disk that I extracted from the old mac into the new enclosure. I have been trying to recover the sparsebundle file which has my FileVault protected files because, even though the hard disk will mount and I can see my old Applications, Library and other folders, I can't find my home folder's sparsebundle. I was wondering, does anyone here know of any way that I can recover the old sparsebundle? Note that the hard disk has NOT been used since that happened and I have not changed the file structure on that hard disk (in other words, I have not been saving or deleting files or formatting the drive).
So, does anyone have any ideas? I know that PhotoRec doesn't exactly try to find sparsebundles (after all, sparsebundles don't have a header that they recognize, they only recognize these files) but it has been successful at pulling old Apple EULAs and old Apple TV ads from the hard disk (apparently, the former owner was a fellow Mac geek, who knew? ;-P ) as well as assets and icon sets from (mostly) old versions of Apple applications, a whole lot of plist and txt files that aren't my personal files... as House said, "a lot of apples, no candy bars". ;-P So I know files *can* be restored from this hard disk, I'm just looking for the candy bar in a sea of apples.
Specific details about the old computer:
12" PowerBook G4, 1GHz
160 GB hard disk
had the latest version of Mac OS X 10.5
the computer was updated regularly
All of my applications, the library and System folder seems to be intact.
No changes have been made to the hard disk since the loss, other than placing the hard disk in an enclosure.
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)

Hi,
Your recurring payment didn't go through since Skype was not able to withdraw money from your PayPal account. It might be that credit card linked to your PayPal account expired.
I'm sorry to say that if subscription is not offered anymore then Skype can't attach it to your account anymore. You can use subscription until it's recurring, but if subscription is not offered anymore you can't sign up to it again.

  • How can I get 10.8 to recognize my home folder that was moved to another drive?

I installed an SSD in my MacBook Pro a while back and replaced the optical drive with a regular SATA hard drive and moved my user folder to the larger drive. Unfortunately, Moutain Lion didn't like that, I can no longer log in to my account (I am assuming the relocated user folder is the problem, perhaps it is not?). Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Are you able to log into the machine with a different account (like an administrator account)? If so, open Directory Utility (/System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app) and go to the "Directory Editor" tab, and select your user in the list on the left (the one that you moved to the second drive). What is the value for "NFSHomeDirectory" for that user?  The upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion could have reset this value (since having home directories on drives other than the boot drive (I think) isn't supported). Have you tried reapplying the procedure you used to move your home folder to the secondary drive prior to the upgrade?

  • Enabled FileVault - 24hrs later it's still "Deleting old Home folder"

So last night I enabled FileVault and told it to securely erase the home folder. Now, I know it was big. I had probably around 90GB in my home folder. Had about that much available on the drive, too. It has been sitting on 'Deleting old Home Folder' since I got up this morning. I started the process about 24 hours ago. Could it really be taking this long, or has it hung? I have backups of everything, so it's not a big deal if I have to cancel it and rebuild my home folder. I just want to know how long I should wait before I throw in the towel.

If you have a 90 GB home folder, it'll take forever. (And also be INCREDIBLY unreliable-do you really need every single file encrypted with U.S. Department of Defense level security?)
I recommend you make individual encrypted disk images for the private files.
    Good luck!

  • FileVault: How long does "Deleting old Home folder" take?

Hello, guys. I'm comparing FileVault and PGP WDE. I enabled FileVault on my MBP about 16 hours ago with about 30GB in my user folder, and it's been ""Deleting old Home folder" for at least 10 hours now.
I've not been able to find any accounts of how long this is supposed to take. Has anyone actually waited 16+ hours and had the thing complete?
I understand the pros and cons of using FileVault, but am wondering if the thing is supposed to work.

I didn't have enough free space the first attempt, and FileVault warned me. I freed up some space and moved some of my personal files to an external drive, and it allowed me to continue, the second time around.
This is my first FileVault attempt -- I'm really paranoid, and have two backups, just in case it fails!
I just did a hard reset, and my machine booted up properly. Now, I'll see if it is working OK...

I need help identifying an old Macintosh game: it was a painting game where you rode a roller coaster to an art museum and you got to pick what kind of art work you were going to make. It was animated, 2D i believe. This was the early 90's and I've been trying to hunt it down. I think there was some kind of animal in it, a giraffe maybe?

Could you be thinking of Microsoft Home's "Fine Artist" for Macintosh, as shown in this Amazon.com listing?  This program was bundled with the Performa series of Macs during the mid-90s.

How do I recover a folder that was accidently put in trash and deleted?

If you don't have Time Machine enabled on your Mac you'll need to use a file recovery applicaiton like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage.  FileSalvage had a demo mode to let you know what it can find and recover before you have to purchase it.  However, it won't be able to recover the folder, only the files in the folder.
Other possible file recovery applications can be found at MacUpdate.com by searching there for "file recovery".

  • [SOLVED] Add a user that will use a home folder that already exists.

I have been reading the add user information but am still unsure the proper way to do this.  I would like to create a user in arch that has all the super user, wheel, etc. permissions.  I would like this user to the home folder that already exists and was created on my Ubuntu partition.  Basically I have a dual boot between Ubuntu and Arch and want a user to share the home folder named "J" and not have any permission problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    J.

Yeah, as I said above I didn't think the username part was necessary.  But the uid and gid are how the system keep track of file owndership.  So that is the important part.  One of the first things I had to learn about stuff when moveing from osx to linux is that the two use very different uids and gids for their systems.  So while I was still dual booting, I would always use 501 as my uid so that I could easily share files.  That way I could keep default file permissions in my home (or /Users in osx) folders.

  • How to remove the old email address that was hacked from my iCloud account when iCloud won't let me?

How to remove the old email address that was hacked from my iCloud account when iCloud won't let me?
Pretty much the the email that I used (but didn't verify) to create my iCloud account was hacked and now I can't remove it from my iCloud account due to the iCloud password also being changed by the same person and the fact I had "Find my iPhone" app on my phone also??? I had to change my iTunes email as well but that was far easier so yeah :S.
Please help. I live in NZ, out in the country, so reception is rare and so is getting into the nearest town that has an Apple Store.
    Thanks

If you truly change your existing Apple ID's email address to a new email address, follow these instructions: iOS 7: If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud
If you created a whole new Apple Account because you couldn't access the old one after being hacked, you will need to contact the Apple Account Security Team. Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security

I shared a photo stream of 174 pictures but only 20 are showing up in the folder that was sent out. Any solutions?
    Help much appreciated!

Upload to the shared Photo Streams can take a long time. Sometimes hours. Did the photos appear by now in the stream?
Is the iCloud status o.k. ( iCloud Support webpage)?
Did you share from your mac or from a mobile device? And where are you checking the stream? On your Mac? If you are uploading from a mobile device - is the battery fully charged? Uploading to the Photo Stream is the first that will be suspended, if the device needs charging.
have ypu exceeded any limits? Daily hourly upload rates? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858

I would recommend you use a program called senuti that allows you to copy your songs over to a new computer from an iPod. Unfortunatlly you have to pay for the full version but it allows you to have 1000 free song capacity of copying over and a movie counts as the capacity of 1 song.
