I need to reload system software on G5 tower but DVD drive is dead ...

My G5 tower won't boot. It hangs up just as the blue progress bar reaches all the way to the right. I'm sure I need to reload the system software, but the DVD drive is also on the fritz and I can't use it. I put an old G4 TiBook into target disc mode, hooked it up to the G5, held the option key down at startup and I was able to get the G5 to boot – so I'm sure the hard drive is not dead.
Any suggestions? How can I use an apple system DVD disc and reload the software? Is there another way? I looked at some old G4s I have lying around, thinking I would pull a drive out of there and use it, but it just looked too hard to do. Is there a way to use Carbon Copy Cloner? I have free firewire drive space. Can I just copy the system file from the G4 TiBook onto the G5?
Sorry, I can't tell you the OS, I think it's 10.4.?, but I forget!

reboot the G5 from the Ti target disk, slip the DVD in when you hit the desktop, tell it to reboot from the DVD - open the install OS X icon from the disc, enter pw & click restart.
another thing you might try is imaging the dvd to a firewire drive or partition on the Ti book... backup the tibook first if you resort to that.

  • What's the safest way to reload system software

What's the safest method to reload system software on an intel iMac? My wife's iMac has been behaving erratically.  I have run hardware and virus scans and found no issues. Virus software is Saphos and up to date. Problems began after a brief (5 second) power failure in the neighborhood. My Mac Pro seems fine. Both were on and connected to the internet at the time. I've run a full backup on the iMac so all important files are protected. What next?

Also, your system may have been slow because you installed antivirus software.
    DO NOT reinstall Sophos Antivirus.
OS X has it's own built-in software tools to help in detecting or blocking of potential malware.
Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus is you, the user and your brain.
Don't visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.
Don't install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or sources.
Java is a vulnerability right now, if you do not need it, don't use it.
Use a browser filter and pop-up blocker
Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.
Install security updates when they become available
Educate yourself as to what threats are common and active.
In effect, use your brain as the AV filter.
Follow that advice and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won't feel the need to have to install antivirus software.

Do I need to reload all software to convert to Maverick?

No, Mavericks will install over your existing system leaving all of your apps, settings and files intact. if you're upgrading from Snow Leopard you might find some of your apps no longer work though. You might want to check the compatibility table befire you get any surprises http://roaringapps.com/apps?index=a

  • Reloading system software

When is it advisable to reload my system software?  What kinds of problems can that help with?  What are the possible pitfalls of doing so?  Finally, since I've done some system upgrades online since installing the original system, would that cause problems?

    >When is it advisable to reload my system software?
Only if nothing else solves your problem, and you want to determine if you have a hardware versus a software problem.
    >What are the possible pitfalls of doing so? If your data is not backed up, you could speed the demise of your hard drive.  Backup your data first before doing anything.

    >Finally, since I've done some system upgrades online since installing the original system, would that cause problems?
Only with incompatible software, or filling your hard disk beyond a usable capacity.  Users have found Mac OS X baulks when it gets more than 85% full.

  • Need to reinstall system software but App Store says "downloaded."

I have been waiting for an answer from Apple support, in vain. Does anyone here know how to reinstall the system software if you don't have the disks, and the App Store says "downloaded?"
Or do I have to wait until Apple somehow wakes up and resets my purchase?
I wish they had sent me disks.. Sigh.

There are no longer any system disks, everything is downloadable now. The installer deletes itself after a successful install, so you need to save a copy before using it.
If you need to reinstall OS X you now use OS X Recovery.

If you need to upgrade another Mac you own, then log into the Mac App Store on that Mac and download the installer to that Mac from the Purchases pane.

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,
    Bilil

  • How do I install original system software on a replaced MacMini Hard Drive?

My Mac Mini model A1347 Hard Drive crashed last week. I drove 250 miles to an Apple Store which did not have a replacement drive in stock and was too busy to fix it if they did, so they referred me to an authorized technician in the area. He had a drive, but not the time to install it. But he was kind enough to give me very precise instructions which I followed carefully and now have the drive installed and apparently running fine. I also have a very good Time Machine backup for this computer.
Now - my question is how to I reinstall my software on this computer, since the new drive is blank? I have the original install disks, but the instructions assume I want to reinstall over the existing system, or erase and replace it. Nothing about putting it on a new drive.
When I start up the computer, it asks me for a startup drive (the ?? icon). When I put in the original install disk, the Apple logo appears and it starts trying to load, but never does, and eventually my monitor goes to sleep with nothing happening.
    Any trick I'm unaware of?
I've also tried the startup with the C key down. Same thing.
    Thanks.

You did not tell us what version of OS X you were using. If it was Mountain Lion then you should be able to boot from your Time Machine backup as follows:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon for the Time Machine backup drive.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Do I need a RAID system or just a larger external hard drive

Hi guys... I am working in my fathers company and running the media side of our small business. I do our website, print media and also our video production....
I have an iMac and it is running on 500gig of storage and 8meg of RAM.... I have almost filled up my hard drive and I am looking into to getting into to doing a lot more video work....
I need more storage, but I am not sure whether to invest in a RAID system or should I just get an external hard drive...
At what point is a RAID worth the investment ?
    Thanks guys
    Harrison

RAID provides a level of redundacy should one of the hard drives in the array fail.
I would only invest in RAID if you are able to support the RAID array and understand its limitations.
Remember RAID is not backup. Don't be complacent about backup.
A larger hard disk is simplier to manage than a RAID array.
As with any mission critical data, you need a robust backup strategy.

  • Possible to create system software disc on USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9

Is it possible to create a system software disc on a USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9?

Hopefully, those dvd's are the correct ones. If not, it's possible to download the AHT for many models from Apple, & either make a bootable drive, or replace the files in the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics folder.
see  Download and run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) from a USB drive.
There are additional download details in the comments  for some later models.

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD drive is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when the DVD drive in my iMac G5 is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

You need to set up the FireWire Target Disk mode installation with the iMac as host, so that it runs its own install disk. The G5 tower should be the target, so that you are "borrowing" only its DVD drive.
Shut down the iMac. Put the iMac install disk into the G5 tower, and reboot the G5 tower into TDM by holding down the T key. Connect the FireWire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down the option key. Hopefully the iMac startup manager will see the install disk that is in the tower; if so then select it and boot from there.
