  • Help, I need to replace my hard drive in my hp pavilion a6863w how do i do this?

The hard drive surface test and seek test failed,  A seagate 2TB SSHD. I want to install it and I am sure I can do it but I need to know if I should leave the bad drive in and just add this one, if I do this will I need any other cables, if so, I would rather just take out the old.
I have the recovery install discs that I made when I first bought it. I have used these b4 to reinstall.
I just need to know the steps if I add the 2nd drive or the steps (if I need a cable) to replace the old drive with the new drive. Would this drive be considered my boot drive? When I ask for the steps, I am more concerned with the turning off the computer and what things I need to unplugged, etc. Then once the new drive is in place, do I simply run the recovery discs or is there an easier way?
I tried to run a backup but it stopped and wouldn't let me. I have all my important things like photo's movies, etc already backed up.

Remove the old drive, replace it with the new one and use the recovery disk set. Choose factory image recovery.

I've always had the theory that if you put two computer power cords in a drawer they will breed and you'll end up with a lot more!   My parts drawer is always full of them.  They like to knot up by themselves as well!  Maybe that's how they breed.

Ok when you refer to "memory" that is the Random Access Memory which is temporary memory the processor (worker) uses to store stuff while it's using it. Power goes off whats in the memory is gone.
Your storage drive is where data is pernamnetly stored if the power is on/off.
So what you really mean to say is your storage drive is filled up and you need to make some room.
You have a TimeMachine drive, what this does is makes a image of your internal storage drive as a backup method, it also allows some "back in time" restoration of your previous deleted files depending how much space is on that drive. The more space, the less data you have, the more days you can go back in time to retrieve something.
Unfortunatly the TimeMachine drive is not a extra space storage drive, it automatically rotates what appears on your internal storage drive. So if you delete something from the internal drive, it eventually gets deleted from the TimeMachine drive.
So you need to make some more room on your internal drive, this is rather easy, all you need is ANOTHER external drive and connect it to the Mac. Give it a name like ExtraStorage#1 and thenyou will have to decide which of your User files you really don't need on the internal drive.
For instance the best choice would be to move some movies out of your Movies folder to another MoviesExtra folder on the ExtraStorage#1 drive.
Movies take a LOT of drive space and you can always copy them on or off, or watch them from the ExtraStorage#1 drive as well. But if your going to do this a lot, you should consider getting a Firewire 800/400, USB 3,2,1 combination drive as Firewire 800 is fastest and decently priced (Thunderbolt is very high priced and overkill at this time)
The other things like Documents are quite small, Pictures can take a lot of space if you have a lot, but if you need them on the internal drive then that's better. Music one tends to use a lot or manage playlists and such, but perhaps some music you may which to move off or "prune", I suggest always burning data DVD's of music especially for extra backups.
Once you have freed some room on the internal drive, this liitle neat program will show you what is taking the largest amount of space on your internal drive.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
After a scan, right click on the big squares to "revel in Finder" to show you what's taking the largest amount of space, be warned it also opens up hidden system files and folders, which you won't be able to move. So concentrate on what's inthe Users folder.
Likely if you have a lot of Movies this is the biggest culprit on most standard internal hard drives. Also if you have something in iTunes that's auto-downloading something like PodCasts and not deleting the older ones and you forget. So go there and fix things and that can free up drive space.
If you bought a small SSD with your new Mac, then the price of that SSD has come back to haunt you with low storage space, you will have to think carefully what you can live without on the internal drive.
Once you have slimmed things down, TimeMachine will update to reflect your slimmer internal drive. What this means is there is only one copy of your data on the ExtraStorage#1 drive.
You need to maintain two copies of your data at all times on seperate hardware, so now you need ANOTHER storage drive (ExtraStorage#2) to copy everythinng of ExtraStorage#1, or else if you drop or have a mechanical problem with ES#1 all that data will be gone!

  • What cable do I need to connect my 27 inch iMac to my Cinema Display

What cable do I need to connect my 27 inch iMac to my Cinema Display to have two displays?

It depends on what type(s) of video input you have on your TV. If you've an open HDMI port on your TV, you can use a Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort) to HDMI adapter and it will carry the sound also. See -> here.
    Good luck,

Right click your document, hover over "Open with..." and then click "Other".
    Find TextEdit and click "Open".
TextEdit will then do it's best to open your document.
If you have iLife, do the same but instead of opening with TextEdit open with Numbers, Pages, Keynote, e.t.c.

  • Need replacement for damaged power connector

The power connector (plug) for my 30" cinema display became irreparably damaged and I need to replace it. This is the connector that plugs into the power adapter.
This seems like a simple problem, but I have just spent a couple of hours trying to find a replacement connector or cable without success. There must be a way to do it.

I am also looking for a cable for my 23". I have an easier problem than yours, as it is the cable at the DVI connector that failed. As a temporary repair, I have spliced on a generic DVI connector for a very ugly fix. I was quoted over $400 for replacing the entire cable at my nearest Apple Store. Building in the cable was a diabolical design. I am still searching for a wrecked display so I can salvage the cord.
In your case, you have a much easier splicing job if you can find a cable with a good power connector, but I can tell you that finding a cable is going to be difficult. I have been looking for almost a year. Good luck.

  • Broken power connector: repair advice

I have an 867 MHz TiBook. The tip of the charging plug broke off inside the jack, and I have not been able to extract it with long skinny tweezers. As a result, I can't charge the battery (which was at about 5% when this happened) or use the TiBook.
Does anyone know whether there is access to this jack from inside the case, if one were to remove the bottom shell? I would appreciate any and all advice, hints, cautions, etc. on this rather frustrating and tricky repair problem.
    Thanks
    Jusitn Harlow
867 MHz Titanium Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have the same problem but on a PB Ti 500MHz which does not have a replaceable DC-IN card. The connector is soldered on to the logic board.
I took it off, removed the broken off tip and had to extend a contact as it was missing a tiny piece and not long enough to make contact with the tip on another adapter. I used solder to extend it and everything is working fine again.
However, I view this as a temporary fix. What I'd like to do is get a replacement connector to solder on the logic board but can't seem to find a source for them.
Failing finding the right connector part I was thinking of getting a DC-IN card and removing the connector from it. I assume they're the same connector. Anyone know for sure?
Also, I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get a new plug for the broken power supply. Seems a shame to trash it just for a broken plug.
    Thanks.

  • Where do I find the power adapter for my Cinema Display?

I have recently aquired an older style of an Apple Cinema display. It didn't come with a power adapter, just the DVI cable coming out the back. I have done some research and understand that power and usb and video signal come through this one cable, but I have also come to know there is supposed to be a converter power box type thing between the display and the monitor. I can find boxes similar to the one I believe I need on Ebay and other sites, but not the exact one. They vary in style somewhat. Wondering if someone could steer me in the direction of where to get one and help me understand more of what I need and how it all works? The model/serial number on the monitor is CY3041XSLFA, it's a 23" Cinema HD Display, made in 2002. - Thanks -

If the display uses the Apple Display Connector (ADC)
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.j pg/800px-AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
you will need a DVI to ADC adapter.

They are also available on eBay.

  • Cinema display how to fix broken cable?

The connector of the power cable that goes into the power adaptor from my 30"cinema display just cracked, so now the monitor won't power on.  It's a fine working monitor, but how the **** do I fix this?   The cable is fused to the monitor itself.   It's obviously out of warranty and I'm very handy.  Is this something I can attempt to fix myself somehow?   How much would a service center charge to fix something as simple as this?  It's just the very tip of the power plug that's cracked open.

    Thanks for the reply Malcolm.
That's what's so baffling and why I had to ask the question here.
I'm using a HDCP compliant monitor (or at least it should be on an Apple monitor purchased late 2009-early 2010) and I still get an error. Everywhere I've checked it says the 24'' is HDCP compliant. Maybe I just missed the upgrade somehow?
Also to note: my old laptop was purchased post 2008. So the HDCP measures would have already taken affect and I was able to play HD videos just fine.

Manoj: Just to be clear, could you please let me know where you are facing issues while trying to sign in?
You: I tried to sign in from the reset password email you sent but it did not work when I reset the pass word
    Manoj: Okay.
Manoj: May I know if you are able to install the Photoshop Elements 13 application?
You: Another email has been received with same link to reset the pass word that went to Junk Mail. So what should I do?
Manoj: I am sorry for the trouble caused.
Manoj: Open Adobe.com on your system.
You: I inserted the disk and input the serial number but can not get past the ID & pass word. It says the combination does not work
    Manoj: Okay.
Manoj: Not to worry. Please open Adobe.com in web browser and try to sign in there.
You: I have Adobe.com open and input my birth date. Now what do I do?
    Manoj: Thank you.
Manoj: Now try to continue the installation.
You: The page just give a bunch of marketing or sales items but no launch the program info.
    Manoj: Okay.
Manoj: May I know if you are still unable to login with Adobe sign in details while the installation ?
You: Now my CD Disc drive with the CD in it has refused to word. I have no way to sign in. I tried to get the set up through my control panel but it says install is trying to work and to retry but that will not work
Manoj: Please check if there is an installation window which is already opened and try to continue with the installation process.
Manoj: Check the task bar if there is the installation process is going on.
You: Nothing is going on with installation. The disc drive light is not on. Basically it is locked up and I can not open it
You: I tried the sign in button again but just got the same window to reset the pass word.
    Manoj: Okay.
Manoj: Please close the installation window.
Manoj: Run the set up file now and start the installation process.
You: I closed all of the windows except this customer care window and my email
    Manoj: Thank you.
Manoj: Now open the Disc drive.
Manoj: Run the setup file and start the installation process.
You: Okay the disc drive opened and is open now
Manoj: Now please continue with the installation process.
You: Do I just insert the Disc again?
Manoj: Yes, please insert the disc.
    Manoj: Open the application folder.
Manoj: Run the setup file and start the installation process.
You: It brought up the install window and when i clicked on the install button it saad that installer was running and that I needed to close other adobe windows but only the customer care window is open
You: It also has the disc drive locked up again
Manoj: There might be an installer file running background.
Manoj: Please press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together on your keyboard to open Task Manager.
    You: OK
Manoj: Now go to Processes tab.
Manoj: Click on Show processes from all users option and then check if there is any Setup.exe process is running.
You: FireFox.exe *32 is large and running
    Manoj: No, please ignore it.
Manoj: Check if there is a process named Set up.exe running in the processes tab and end the process if it is listed.
You: There is no Set up.exe running listed on the page
    Manoj: Okay.
Manoj: Try to start the installation now and check.
Manoj: May I know the status please?
You: I went to the Applications list and there was two Elements 13 there and one was running. I now have just one running but when I tried the installation again it just sent me to the sign in page which will not accept my old or new pass word
You: I now have two programs running Adobe elements 13 and customer care via FireFox running
    Manoj: Okay.
    Manoj: Thank you for informing.
You: The disc is not inserted at this time
    Manoj: Please insert the disc.
Manoj: Copy the folder contents on your disc and then try installing the application.
You: How do I do that?
Manoj: Please insert the disc, open the disc folder, copy the entire Photoshop Elements 13 folder to the desktop.
You: This says it will take 50 minutes to copy them. Is that correct as i have to go some place soon?
Manoj: The files are huge in size, so it will take a while.
You: It now says there are 14 minutes remaining
    Manoj: Thank you for informing.
Manoj: If you want to try installing the application later, you can try installing the application from Desktop by running the setup file from the desktop app.
You: There is still 8 minutes remaining. When this gets loaded to the desk top then what do I do.
Manoj: Once the copy of files is completed. Remove the disc and then open the desktop Photoshop Elements 13 folder, run the setup file in that folder to start the installation.
You: Ok. It still says it will take another 5 minutes to load
    Manoj: Thank you for informing.
You: Now at 2.30 minutes remaining
    Manoj: Thank you for informing.
You: Ok. The loading to desk top must be done & I have removed the disc
    Manoj: Thank you,.
Manoj: Now open the folder which we copied now.
Manoj: Run the Setup.exe file from the folder.
You: i tried running the set up file but it says other items are open. I tried to close the one for sign i again and it will not close.
Manoj: May I know the error it is showing as while trying to close the other installation window?
You: The sign in window keeps asking for a ID & Password. When i put them in is says I must reset the pass word
    Manoj: Okay.
Manoj: Close that previous installation window which is asking to reset the password and run the setup file now from the new folder which we copied now.
You: I said it would send notice to my email but I checked both the email and the junk mail and nothing arrived
Manoj: Robert, since the previous installation is started from the disc, we need to close that window and start installing from the desktop Photoshop Elements folder.
You: Ok I got everything closed and will retry
    Manoj: Thank you.
You: The installer initiation ran and now I am back to the same problem.. When I try to sign in it says I need a new pass word but nothing happens
Manoj: Okay, Please allow me 2-3 minutes while I check and help you.
Manoj: Thank you for staying online.
Manoj: May I have your permission to connect to your computer remotely and try to solve the problem while you watch?
You: yes but I am running out of time.
    Manoj: Okay.

You: I have onlly 10 minutes left before I must leave. I can be back by 2030 (8:30 PM) if that will work
Manoj: In this case, I will leave this open, please contact us back when you find free time so that we will continue from this point to resolve the issue as early possible.
Manoj: Is that okay for you?
