I need to replace the hd on a macbook early 2008 what is the best hard drive to use would like sad if compatible

what size do i need

An SSD will work - just as long as the drive has a form factor of 2.5" x 7, 9.5 or 12 mm, it should work in your MacBook Pro (the 'norm' used to be 9.5mm but there are  a lot of 7mm drives being introduced).
If you're considering SSDs I can recommend either the Samsung EVO series or the Crucial M500 or M550.
See -> Upgrading your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive.
If you decide that you don't need a SSD, you can always go with a Seagate SSHD (a portion of the drive is solid state) or just a regular HD (and my recommendations there would be HGST or Toshiba).
Good luck,
Clinton

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

  • I need to replace the internal hard drive on my PB G4

My hard drive finally bit the dust and I had to remove it to send it to someplace to hopefully recover the data.
Meantime, I want to get a drive quickly to install it and put a new system on it in anticipation of receiving my data.
What are the specs/interface for the PB G4 hard drive and what are the good drives to look for and the ones to avoid for it?
    thanks,
    Shel

What are the specs/interface for the PB G4 hard drive and what are the good drives to look for and the ones to avoid for it?
You can use any parallel ATA or ultra ATA or ATA-6 drive (all basically the same thing). You cannot use a serial ATA or SATA drive, like those used in the current Apple notebooks. You have a choice of drive speed, 5400rpm is pretty much the standard today or 7200rpm, which carries a price premium for the speed. Seagate comes with a 5 year warranty, if that's a consideration. Most others are 1 or 3 years. If you scan the forums, people seem to like Hitachi and Seagate, although there are other brands that work well too. Some people shy away from Toshiba notebook drives, although you can find posts where the owners have had success with them (they have been a particular problem on 12" Powerbooks).
Two online sources are OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ and http://www.newegg.com/ .

  • HT1386 I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  Now my iTunes says my iPhone 5 is no longer an authorized device.  What should I do?

I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  I had to rebuild my iTunes Library by dragging my music folders in my iTunes Media into the iTunes Application and rebuild my playlists manually.  After plugging my iPhone 5 into the computer USB, it immediately recognized my iPhone 5, showing: last backups, space left on my iPhone & all options available.  I then checked the box to manually manage music etc.  The problem I am now having is that when I actually try to drag music from my iTunes to my phone a prompt comes up saying that my iPhone is not an authorized device.  What should I do?  Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    jrmetzger,
iOS runs on iPads and iPhones; OS X runs on Macs.
Given your situation, I’d highly recommended that you purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter, so that you can test both your old disk and your new disk externally, since it might be that the problem is due to a faulty internal SATA cable rather than due to faulty disks.

If you failed to burn recovery discs, you can obtain them from Toshiba at Get Recovery Media here.
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 70 of the User's Guide.

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced

  • What is the Best Hard Drive for a Powerbook Pismo 200 and best size for sto

I have a Power book G3 Pismo 2000 which came with a 10 GB Hard Drive. It is almost full and I want to upgrade the Hard drive to a bigger and I do not know the best hard drive and what is the maximum space I will need? Can you recommend size and Manufacture?

I bought a 80GB Toshiba for my Pismo. It seems to work well. I believe the largest drive that will be fully recognized is a 120GB drive.
Here's a good place to see your options. Go to this web page at OWC and get a listing of your upgrade options for your Mac model.

You can get the product models and specs, and shop around, but OWC has pretty good prices.

  • What is the best backup drive to use to backup a windows xp pc and to transfer that data to a new iMac i5 May 2011 and then to backup my iMac on it?

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

  • The best hard drive format for sharing XP and Mac

Hi, I just bought a external Hard drive and I would like to format it, but I don't know which format to use since I'm going to sharing the hard drive with XP(work) and my iMac(personal). I don want share using USB not network. thanks

    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu one. Set the format type to MS-DOS. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
The drive should be usable on both a PC and a Mac.

  • What's the best hard drive I can put in my mac book 6,1?

What's the best hard drive I can put in my mac book 6,1? Is there a solid state hard drive available? I've been through two hard drives in the last 3 years, which i primarily blaim on how much I have to move my computer around at work while the drive is spinning.

Yes there is and SSD for your Mac.  I just ordered an SSD for a MacBook 6,1 from OWC.  http://www.macsales.com/
    Also check Crucial and Kingston.
I ordered the DIY Upgrade Bundle: Mercury Electa 3G SSD.
That MacBook is only capable of 3 GB/s so the 6G SSDs are overkill.
I recently upgraded the memory from 2 GB to 8 GB.  It cut the boot time by a factor of three.  That is only a $100 upgrade.

  • I have a sony HDR-SR5 camcorder and need to empty the iternal hard-drive. I have downloaded onto Picture Motion Browser and woud like to know if this will have stored all of the data on the hard-drive so can go back and edit later.

I have a Sony HDR-SR5 camcorder with a 40GB internal hard-drive. I need to clear the hard-drive as it's almost full. I have managed to download the footage onto Picture Motion Browser, but am wondering whether PMB will have stored all the info from the camcorder hard-drive so that I can edit later.
Also, I would like to back-up on another hard-drive, but when I have tried this I can't view the footage stored on the hard-drive so am not sure whether I have backed up sufficiently and in what format? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful...

    >I have managed to download the footage onto Picture Motion Browser
Isn't Picture Motion Browser available for Windows only?  If so, why are you posting in an Final Cut Express forum?  My apologies if I'm incorrect.

I need help picking the correct/best hard drive upgrade for my MBP. It is the 15" 2GHz Core Duo. Came with a spacious 90GB drive.
    Suggestions and recommendations very appreciated.

It will take almost any 2.5 inch sata drive.
Take a look at www.newegg.com and www.macsales.com to see what's out there and how much it costs.
Toshiba have a 320gb 2,.5 inch drive in the works, but it's not quite out yet and will be expensive.
