I need to reset my admin password, no cd, help!

Hi community,
I recently had my faulty hard drive replaced and picked it up today. Luckily they were able to save my data but not my programs. To re-download them I need my password. I assumed it was my old password, but it's not accepting that?
I have been able to sign in with my apple id but I can't select the option that says 'allow user to reset password using apple id'.
I don't have the filevault thing on and I don't have the original Mac cd, I've lost it whilst moving or something?
Help!
Darbsielle

If you needed a password to download programs from the Mac App Store that may be a completely different password then you use to Logon to your Mac. Although it can be the same. Mine isn't
Resetting the password on your Mac will not help you with, or change, the password on the Mac App Store. That only resets the password for logging into and installing program on your Mac.
If when you said "I need to Download my Programs" you REALLY Meant I Need To Install my Programs to the Mac then yes resetting the system password will help with that.
Download and Install are Two Totally Different things. But like a lot of computer users they don't distinguish the difference between the two terms. Maybe you are one of those. But they are different.

  • Macbook Air Lion OX S 10.7.5 Need to reset second Admin Password

I have three user accounts on my Macbook Air 11-inch (late 2011 model). Two are designated "Admin" in the "Users and Groups"
I changed one user account password, thought I saved the password hint via email to myself and now find I cannot log in either the new password or the older one. It is one of the two user accounts that are designated "Admin"
The other Admin user account works just fine and I have not lost that password. It is the original Admin account that I set up when the computer was new.
FireVault is turned OFF for the disk "Macintosh HD"
If I understand this correctly, since this MB Air has FireVault, I cannot reset the user account password using my Apple ID.
So how do I change the password?
Would I restart by selecting "Recovery disk" at book by holding "Option"?
Or would I restart while holding "Command+ R"?
I've never had to do this before, so I am a bit hesitant to start rebooting with either of the above methods.
Repeating that, yes,  I do have the master password for this Macbook Air. My software is up to date. There are two admin user accounts and I have lost the password to only one of them. Running OS X 10.7.5
    Thanks for any help.

  • How to reset the admin password for Mac OSX 10.5.8

I have a 2008 Macbook Leopard version of the Mac OSX 10.5.8.  My DVD optical drive does not open, and I need to reset the admin password because we have forgotten what it is.  Wondering if it is possible doing it at home some step by step process I am fine with deleting all the contents saved on the macbook as well.

Not without the optical drive. You would need to insert the install disc to reset the admin password.
But you may be able to do this in single user mode >  10.5: Reset a user's password in single user mode - Mac OS X Hints

  • How do i reset my laptops permission without resetting my admin password?

Listen, I have a school laptop and ofcoarse they have put their own tweaked operating system on their that blocks me from accessing different parts of my laptop and opening any third party apps. As any mac person like myself I have worked my way around the permissions by using a 'ksadmin' file in a particular MacOS folder. You would think now that I have worked this out why would I need to reset my permissions. Well it's because I cannot drag anything into the applications folder and there are some games and files that the 'ksadmin' will not run. The purpose of the 'ksadmin' file is to trick the containing folder that I am actually an administartior of this laptop. So could someone please tell me how to reset my permissions without resetting the admin password. If i reset the admin pasword (I have before) they will find out!
    Thanks
    Daniel

Then, I'd give it back to them and insist on one with the factory-provided OS. Barring that, put a bootable backup/clone onto an ext HD, boot into recovery mode, wipe the drive, and restore the OS. That will be Apple's nonbutchered OS. Then, on first boot use the Setup Assistant to migrate from the backup/clone.

Also, can you please give step by step directions? I am not the best with technology, so I need to know exactly what to do. Please help!

Insert a compatible Mac OS X DVD, restart with the Option key held down, and use its Reset Password utility. If the computer has a firmware password set, you need to know that.

Boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

    1. Should be possible to do that; go to the Utilities menu and select 'reset password' before starting the installer. (while booted from the DVD of course)
    2. Standard installation of SL only replaces system components; applications, user data and preference settings should not be affected.
    3. But you do have a backup just in case, don't you?
