I need to transfer files from a PowerMac G4 to a PowerMac G5, how do I get both computers to read MY Passport drive?

I have formatted the My Passport drive as a MS-DOS (FAT) but the G4 which is running on Mac OS 10.2.8 can not see the drive on the desktop. The G5 (Mac OS 10.6.8) has no problem reading the drive. I have about 7 GB of data that I need to transfer from the G4 to the G5. How do I format the My Passport drive so that both computers can read the drive? Is it possible?

A faster alternative is to connect the macs with a firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode. No external drive needed.

I need to transfer files from a friends iPad to my desktop. Is this possible? If so, how?

Depending upon what the files are - The easiest way to do it - in my opinion - would be to email the files from your friend's iPad to you. You can't sync to another computer and email should work just fine. You email the files from within the app in which the file is saved or created. Most apps will have a tool icon or an arrow icon at the top if you tap on - it will give you an option to email the file

  • I need to transfer files from my old power pc os x 10.2.8 to my new mac 2.7 i5 os x 10.7.5 how do I do it

i need to transfer files from my old power pc os x 10.2.8 to my new mac 2.7 i5 os x 10.7.5 how do I do it?

I have been asking this question to several people also.  I have used the program Super Duper to backup my old PowerPC G5 Mac to an external hard drive.  The answer I received is as follows:
When you first start the new Mac, you'll be asked if you want to "copy from another Mac". Point this at the old Mac, or at the backup volume created by a full "Backup - all files" of that Mac, made with Erase, then copy or Smart Update. That'll automatically bring in your applications, account information and data.
Of course, any "copy protected" or "activated" applications will likely need to be reactivated: after all, it's a new Mac. Other than that, though, you should be ready to go on the new computer.
I have an old computer at work and a new Mac at home.  I decided to test this by bringing my backup home to see if my new iMac computer would read it.  It worked!  I feel confident I can now transfer my old backup information to the new work computer.

Assuming that "original" means a G3/CRT iMac, not wireless. The G3 iMacs didn't have Bluetooth. The good news, though, is that any standard USB keyboard and mouse will work with them, even the ones designed for Windows that you can pick up for ten bucks or so.

  • What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro (it has been taken out of the computer) to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfer files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

  • My hard drive fried, and I need to transfer files from iPod to My Music

I've seen articles on transferring music from an old computer to a new one when you still have the old computer. But, my hard drive completely fried, and I need to know how to transfer the files from my iPod to the new hard drive. I thought I saw an article that actually contained a video on how to do this, but now I can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

  • What exact FW cable do I need to transfer files from PowerPC iMac to new iM

My husband bought a Belkin 9-pin to 4-pin 800/400 cable which is what guy at Apple Store sold him but it doesn't work.
Need to use PowerPC G5 as Target Disk Hard Drive to transfer files to new Intel iMAC & would appreciate someone telling me specifically what part on Apple Store website to order.
    Thanks,

You would need the 9-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable:

    Regards.
EDIT: the 9-pin to 9-pin Niel linked to would also work if you have the current or recent iMac that has a FW800 port.

  • I have iphoto '08 version with an imac osx 10.5.8. It will not read my RAW files  from my Nikon D800 - a very new model. How can I get it to read my RAW files?

my somewhat old imac osx 10.5.8 with iphoto '08 will not read my RAW files from my new Nikon D800 camera - a new model on the market( 5 months or so). How can I get iphoto to read my RAW  files?

iPhoto 08 would not read RAW files from that new a camera. You need to upgrade so you can get more up-to-date version of OS X and iPhoto. Another possiblity is see if iPhoto 11 will run on 10.5.8, if so you should update. You can also attempt to run Software Update and see if it finds a newer release of iPhoto 08 that supports newer RAW formats.

I keep trying to put my CR2 files on photoshop elements 11 and I can't. It keeps saying my camera is not compatilble. I use a Canon Rebel T5i. How do I get it load? Do I need to update my program? I really need to get this images up and editted asap! Help, please!

You should be able to open the Canon Rebel T5i/700d camera raw files with pse 11 if you update to camera raw 7.4
In the pse 11 editor go to Help>Updates and hopefully that should download and install camera 7.4

  • Need to transfer files from iBook G4 To New Macbook Pro 13" HELP!

My iBook G4 has a firewire 400 port, whereas the Macbook Pro has an 800 port. I am about to order a cable so that I can transfer my files via migration assistant, but just want to double check here to see if it will work. (I am getting VERY confused about all this 6 pin 9 pin business!) Could someone please enlighten me? As far as i know FW 400 ports are 6 pin and 800 ones are 9 pin?
Anyway here is the cable i am considering buying:

  • How do i get My Documents files from PC to work on my new macpro, how do i get My Documents files from PC to work on my new macpro, how do i get My Documents files from PC to work on my new macpro

I have just purchased my first Mac after using PC for years. I dont need to move programs over but I do need to get my document files to open and be useable on the Mac. I have Office on the PC and Office for Mac on the Mac. I have tried copying the files to a portable drive, plug into the Mac and can open both Word and Excel and can edit however cannot save the edited document as it tells me the file is read only and then that the disc might be full, which it isnt as I have checked.
Is it because the portable drive is NTFS format and the Mac wont recognise this? If so what do I do?
    Thanks hopefully

Yes, this is exactly what is causing the problem. Macs cannot write to NTFS formatted drives, only read. You must move the documents to the internal HDD/SSD of the Mac to be able to edit them.
Or, since you say you don't want to move the documents to the internal storage, you'll need to format the external HDD as FAT32.

I just bought an iMac and need to transfer files from my PC.  I have an external USB drive but iMac says it can read it.  How do I transfer these files?

If you don't need to write to the drive from the iMac, just plug it in and copy the files off. If you do, install software such as the NTFS-3G drivers.
