I need to transfer video from a Sony DCR-TRV530 to iMovie11.

I have successfully transfered my Sony-produced video tape to my older iMac, but now that I have changed to a new iMac with OS 10.8.3, I can no longer do the transfer. Apple's guidance has not helped. What do I do now?

This camera works with Macs. All DV format cameras work, but Apple does not list them individually.
It depends which new Mac you have. You need a Firewire Port. Newer Macs would have Firewire 800. However, the very newest Macs do not have Firewire, but have Thunderbolt instead. For these you need a Firewire cable plus a Firewire to Thunderbolt Adapter.
So, if you Mac has Firewire, you need a 4 pin to 9 pin cable like this.

If your Mac has only Thunderbolt, you need the 4 pin to 9 pin cable mentioned above PLUS an Apple Firewire to Thunderbolt Adapter.

"It's vital to research your computer purchases before you make them ... especially when you spend so much money, you need to be sure it'll work with the devices that you already have."
I agree with you...to a point. I knew my 13-inch aluminum had no firewire, but I had no idea Apple would leave me high and dry by creating a product that would not accept DV video by any means. That's like producing a computer without a headphone jack. It's unconscionable for a company that promotes easy video editing and creation as one of their primary selling points to put a product like this out there. I have iMovie and I can't even use it?? Who thought THAT was a good idea? I upgraded to Mac for a reason and I'm deeply disappointed.

  • Hi, what's the best way to transfer content from a Sony dcr-sx31 to an iMac

Hi looking for some help please. I want to transfer video from my Sony dcr-sx31 to an iMac for editing and creating DVDs. I've heard that this is not straight forward so hoping someone  can give me the best approach or some top tips please

Thanks for the update. The labeling around here is about as counter-intuitive as they could make it. This forum is for original iMacs with  PowerPC ("PPC") processors that were made from 1998 to late 2005. All iMacs since then have Intel processors--very different beasties--so they get a separate forum here:
    iMac (Intel)
That where you find your gurus when you get your new iMac. Typically, forums for older models like this get less traffic and therefore fewer eyeballs than forums for newer products,
However, you may get faster response for contacting Sony. I recall their Mac support being hit or miss depending on the product line.
    for editing and creating DVDs
Also note that new iMacs come with iLife BUT iLife no longer includes the DVD creator program iDVD on preinstalled bundles. Apparently people have been able to get it by calling Apple and protesting that there computer did not ship with all the components that are in the iLife Boxed set. YMMV

  • I can not transfer video from my sony handycam DCR-HC36 to ivideo in imac

I can not transfer video from my sony handycam DCR-HC36 to ivideo in imac. Help!  THANK-YOU!!

Take both back to the salesman in the store and ask him to show you how it works, or, if he can't, then maybe you want to make an exchange or return. Unfortunately, it appears that the salesperson didn't look carefully enough at the camera specs to realize that the MacBook doesn't have the video input needed. You can capture the audio from the camera through the MacBook audio line-in, but that's about it.
You need some kind of USB TV/tuner input device that has the plugs needed to connect to the camera and import the video into the MacBook. Cameras with FW ports allow direct uploading of the digital video to the computer.
An external DVD drive that can load the miniDVD's in its tray is another possibility.

  • I need help importing video from my Sony digital 8 camcorder

Help !! I bought a new imac g5. When I try to import my video from my sony DCR-TRV460 it shows only a blue screen without sound. My camcorder is connected via firewire. I open iMovieHD, then connect my camcoder. I turn on my camcoder and set it to play/edit. iMovie starts controlling my camcorder (rewind, play, etc...) yet it onlys shows a blue screen when playing. It does the same if I use the import button. When it starts playing, sometimes it shows a scrambled digital image, then goes to blue screen. Can anyone tell me how I get my imovie and camcorder to work together? Thanks

Can anyone tell me how I get my imovie and camcorder to work together?
Yup! but you have to keep an open mind here...
First-if your camera can control the camera but not see the video,
    *Open Garageband
    *Play a note or two
    *Close Garageband
    *Open iMovie
    The camera will work now-REALLY!!
    If not, look here:

  • Buying a 2010 macbook...what cable do I need to transfer video from my cannon mini dv camcorder?

    Hi
I'm confused as to which cable I would need if I want to transfer video from my camcorder to macbook?
    Please help???

The only input plugs on the 2010 are USB. If you want FireWire you need to get a MacBook Pro.

  • HT201177 What cable do I need to download videos from a sony camcorder to my iMac desktop

I have an older sony digital handy cam that records on tapes.  I want to copy a video to my imac desktop.
What fire wire cable do I need? I bought a cable from best buy 4 pin to 6 pin, but it does not work.
Do I need to buy it from Apple?

Is it Digital? If not you'll need an Analog to Digital converter.

  • Need to transfer videos from ipod to pc

Hey guys, I just bought a second hand 5th gen 30gb iPod and I want to keep the videos that are on it now on it. I want to transfer them to my computer incase I need to do a hard reset and lose everything.
Also, how do I delete some of the videos off of my ipod and keep some? Sorry I am a new user. Also there is not enough room on my harddrive to put all the videos on the computer
Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh just wanted to add, I know there are many programs that transfer the music from the ipod to the pc but i can`t seem to find one that will do the videos.
I also checked the Knowledge base and didn`t find any ways that would do it without me having to be at the computer for hours. I am not being lazy and not looking, I just am having no luck.
Oh, and if I find one I will post it here too. Thanks again

  • I need to transfer video from a camcorder to my iMac what cables needed?

I have an old Canon Optura 300. I just realized that it still has a tape in it with important memories I would like to preserve. I suppose I could get a disk made, but I would rather do the transfer to my imac myself and have the "tools" needed. According to the Canon tech I spoke with, I need a DV IEEE1394 4-pin cable. But since that's a firewire cable I will also need a converter in order to use it with my iMac. Does getting the "Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire" adapter make sense and is it the right way to go in order to transfer the video onto my computer? Do I need anything else to complete this transfer?
Just checking—I know there's no better place to go for my answer than this site.  Thanks, Joan (still OS X 10.8.5 for now)

OK, so that part is correct. Then, do I just hookup and it automatically goes onto my computer? What will capture it, or will it simply show on my desktop and I need to open it with...what?

You can use Image Capture located in your Applications folder.
Connect the camera to your Mac.
    Launch Image Capture
Select Image Capture from the pop up menu (bottom left corner of the iMage Capture window).
At the bottom of the window click the pop up menu to select the folder where you want the videos stored.
Select the Import or Import All button at the bottom of the Image Capture window.
