I need to unplug and restart Airport Express

I need to unplug and restart Airport Express once or more every day. Time to replace or just reset?

but that's not the problem: Just had new cable broadband installation with new modem from TWC two weeks ago
No guarantee that the installation is working correctly, just because it is new. I had to have my ISP come back out twice in the week following the initial installation. Each time, after fiddling around, the "tech" said that everything was perfect. It wasn't. The ISP finally replaced the modem, and I haven't had a drop in months.
Problem may trace to one Mac running OS 10.7+ and the other 10.5+ - there are different levels of Airport Utilities for each
Does not make any difference.
I'll take it to a Genius Bar and get it checked - or replaced.
And, if it works perfectly there....as it likely will....you might want to think about a possible Plan B.
If the Express is 5+ years old, then it might be a good idea to replace it, if possible.

  • Need to unplug and re-plug airport express every time I want to use it

    Hi there,
just bought an Aiport Express (new generation), the sole purpose being to stream i-tunes music from a Macbook Air and Ipad to my old analog stereo without having to hook it up with cables.
The airport is "joined" to an existing wifi network (non apple product) which works flawlessly with all my other Apple products. The Airport Express is connected to the stereo using a normal minijack/phono cable (works 100%). Setting up the airport express was a lot more complicated than anticipated. Could not follow instructions (the airport express icon does not exist in my mac os (should be under wifi) ) and had to fiddle a lot to get it set up - including hooking it up with cables to my macbook just to find and configure it with hotline help.
Finally I got it working and once it is connected, it works flawlessly.
A continuing problem though is to get it connected:
Even the led is green, neither my macbook air nor my ipad (3rd gen) can find it unless I unplug (power) the airport express, wait 30 sec, plug it back in, wait another 3-5 min before the Led is green.... then sometimes I can find and use it but not always. Pressing the reset button is less succesful...
If it was wrongly configured, then it should just not work, but the annoying part is that it works most of the times - when i unplug (=restart and not reset it). Have others had similar experiences?
This is so annoying that it forfeits the purpose and I will have to find another hardware solution soon unless I can get it fixed.
    So my questions would be:
Was it wrong to buy/use an airport express (new gen) to play itune usic from my macbook on my old analog stereo?
If this was a wrong purchase, with which hardware can I play itunes on my stereo without cables from my macbook?
And if my purchase is correct, any ideas how to make it more reliable and easy to use?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    thank you
    Yogesh

Update: 2 months later and several visits to Apple care who insists the device works. It still doesnt work. I have spent countless hours following advise found here on this forum but all to no avail. Apple you dissapoint me!
Have now shelved the AE and am looking for better hardware/brands to stream itunes to an analog stereo using wifi. Any (non Apple) recommendations anybody?
    Thanks

  • Poor network speed with 1st generation time capsule and multiple airport express 5Ghz. My network speed slows to a crawl when not close to the time capsule. I get the range that I need, but the speed is painfully slow.

    Hello,
I have a first generation time capsule running 802.11n (b/g compatable) and the airport expresse's are the newer 5ghz models. I have 3 airport express's and I have the range that I need. I can run the time capsule using 802.11n 5ghz, but I loose the range and can't connect to all of the airport express's. My computers and mobile devices run 802.11n. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase the network speed. Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Thank you

Unfortunately, you are experiencing one of the downsides to 5 GHz. That's because the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals.
After all, you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain potential speed but in return, you must give up penetration power and distance capability.
In order to work well, 5 GHz signals need to almost have a line-of-sight relationship between devices. Unless you can achieve this, you will do much better to leave the Time Capsule running at the 802.11n (b/g compatible) 2.4 GHz Radio Mode and allow the Express devices to "extend" that network.
As for the location of the AirPort Express devices in an exended network, that is critical for best performance. That's because the Express can only "extend" the quality and bandwidth of the signal that it receives. Post back if you need a few more tips on how to find the best location for the AirPort Express devices.
Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Unfortunately, no.

  • Attempted to set up an HP wireless printer and my whole network is now a mess.  HP help told me I had too many signals, as I have a Time Capsule 4 Macs and 4 Airport Express set up.  Anyone else figure this out?

I attempted to set up a new HP wireless printer.  It is unstable and HP support says I have too many devices since I have a time capsule and 4 airport express either extending my network or being used for a different printer or stereos.  Anyone else find that their Airport Express/Extreme interferes with a wireless printer. If so, what's the point?

I have a similar model, the  HP 8500A here in the home office that I originally hooked up using wireless on an AirPort system consisting of an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule and 2 AirPort Express devices.
The HP was originally hooked up to the "main" router using wireless as a test to see how wireless would perform. No issues with setup or performance over the first few weeks. I did eventually change the device to connect using Ethernet once I had room to move the device near the AirPort Extreme.
HP is pulling your leg with the advice about too many devices. The AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule will handle up to 50 wireless devices. In my case, I did nothing except follow the setup procedure and restart the entire network....something that I always do when I make any change to the network.

  • I have an eMac which I want to connect to my home wireless network. My router is D-Link-601 tech 802.11n. My emac is wireless ready but does not contain an airport card. Do I need a card and an airport station? What else?

I have an eMac which I want to connect to my home wireless network. My router is D-Link - 601 tech. 802.11n. My eMac is wireless ready but does not contain an airport card. Do I need a card and an airport station? What else?

You need the Airport card OR Airport Express but not both.  Considering the age of your machine, I recommend Airport Express as you will find other uses for it whenever you replace the eMac.
To set up the AE, you do need OSX 10.4 or higher.

  • Upgraded to iTunes 11.0.5 and now Airport Express doesn't work

Just installed the iTunes 11.0.5 update and now I can't get my Airport Express to work.  iTunes won't play and says it can't recognize the Airport Express device.  Even when re-booted at both the iMac and the Airport Express - the link is broken.  iTunes won't even play the media when the Airport Express is selected -- but the Apple TV and the Computer both work well.   Never had this issue before the 11.0.5 update.  Any thoughts or assistance?

Thank you very much for your reply. I did find 2 previous iTune libraries but they seem to be empty.
Your advice on back up is gratefully noted ... I always assumed Time Machine would do the job.
I guess like many people I've spoken to it's time to move away from Apple ...a declinig market may be the only thing which will make them realise they need to be more responsive to and respectaful of  the millions of individuals who have been their loyal customers for many years.
My business has started moving to Windows and we have been surprised how good it is and products like Office 360 are fabulous in the business environment. We have heaps of iMacs ready for the scrap heap!
I am now looking for an alternative to iTunes. Not an easy feat but clearly there is a huge market opportunity out there for someone to produce a decent product. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

  • What is the maximum distance between a time capsule and an airport express?

What is the maximum distance between a time capsule and an airport express?

You can only "extend" the signal one time, so you need to have the AirPort Express located approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance from the Time Capsule to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
I doubt that this will help much since you have a very challenging setup. Wireless is really only for "same room" or "nearby rooms" around the corner.
To do this correctly you will need to use an Ethernet cable connection from the Time Capsule to the AirPort Express, which could then be located close to the xBox.
If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, you might look at a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send a "psuedo" Ethernet signal over the AC wiring in your home.
This will not be anywhere near the performance of a regular Ethernet cable, but it will likely be much better than wireless.
Since Ethernet over powerline (EOP) is somewhat unpredictable, you would want to have a very clear understanding of the store's return policy in case things don't work out as hoped.  Any computer / electronics superstore will have a selection of powerline adapters to choose from.

  • I want to connect a powered outdoor speaker to an airport express - is that all i need - how close does the airport express have to be to the speaker - how do i connect them?

I want to hook up an outdoor powered speaker to an airport express.  How do I do this?  Which airport express thingee do I need?  I want to plug in the airport express thingee inside and connect to speakers outside.  Is there a length limit to the minijack cable I can use to connect the them?  Do I need a base station thingee and an airport express.  I am only going to use it to stream i tunes music to it.  Thanks.

    No.

  • Can you help with D-link and two airport express stations

I currently run a Dlink 604 wireless and 1 Airport express for iTunes in my front room.
A Express is also linked to the Dlink via a cable.
All works fine - G4 dual running OS x 10.3.9
I would like help with a couple of things please:-
    1. I have no current security on my Express, so anybody can use the net connection through it. How do I change this and still be able to use my tower and laptop?
    2. I have a second Express from work that I would like to use upstairs. It does work but requires me to swap the network to use it for iTunes and then I have no internet.
It was formatted at work so has different ip numbers etc.
Can I make this station join my exisitng network?
As my lap top is wireless will I be able to surf through it upstairs?
    Thanks
    JohnO

    1. You need to open the Express's configuration in Airport Admin Utility and change the Wireless Security settings to WEP or, preferably, WPA or WPA2. When you attempt to connect to the network from your computers, you will be prompted for the password.
    2. The easiest thing to do is to hard reset the second Express and then use the Airport Setup Assistant to configure the second Express to join and extend the first Express's network. To do a hard reset, hold down the reset button until the LED starts flashing rapidly.
BTW, I know it can work because I have the exact same setup (D-Link DI-604 and two Expresses in an extended wireless network).

  • Hi , i need help for resetting my airport express as a repeater since this one is already register to old wifi. thanks

  • My computer won't start without unplugging and restarting, My computer won't start without unplugging and restarting

My computer as failed to start twice without unplugging and restarting.  What is the issue here and do I need to address it.  My mac is approximately five years old and I recently added Snow Leopard.  Love computer and don't want to change

I recently had a PC which had similar issues. When it was cold, it took couple attemps for it boot and after that it worked without any problems. Problem was capacitors, when they fail or are near total failure they might still work when they warm little bit (same thing sometimes applies to solder connections under chipsas they expand in heat and might form connection again) and this was the case with that PC. After replacing them all was back to normal.
    I would check capacitors.

  • TimeCapsule and 2 AirPort Express (11n) - cant get WDS to work

Hopefully someone can help me - I am running out of ideas ...
Its about a Time Capsule (TC) and 2 AirPort Express 11n (Express 1 and Express2). Express1 is supposed to extend the TC's WLAN so that Express2 can join in.
My WLAN is set to 11n only - 2.4GHz, but I have tried other radio modes as well. I "allow this network to be extended". I have set up Express1 to "Extend my Wireless network". Everything fine so far. TC and Express1 are coming up with the green light.
Now I try to set up Express2 to join the WDS as a remote base station connecting to Express1. In Express2 I choose "Manual Setup":
"Base Station": assigned a name (Express2) and I set a new Password
"Wireless": "Participate in a WDS network", set the Network Name, Channel and Radio mode
"WDS": set as "WDS remote" and WDS Main correctly to the AirportID of Express1 as I want Express2 to connect with Express1
Now I click "Update" and after the reboot Express2 remains flashing amber and I cannot connect to it anymore.
I have read the help pages several times and nevertheless I dont know what went wrong.
I have done tests with choosing "Join a wireless network" but ended up the same.
Can anyone help? Has anyone set up a WLAN running like I want to do it?
    1000 Thx for any hints!

Can anyone give me a few pointer on how to rewire
    ableton with le7.2??
The problem i have is that rewire DOES show up in the
environment page, but i just dont know where to start
from there. I always get intimmidated by that
    environment thing in logic.
First, you don't need to do anything with the Environment if you don't need to send MIDI TO Live. If all you want is to get audio FROM Live, follow these instructions:
    1. Create a new track in the Arrange window. You should be given the option to create a ReWire track. If so, select it. Your new track appears in the arrange.
    2. In the parameters window on the left of screen, you'll see a value called "Channel". Click and hold, then select "Audio", then "Rewire", then "Ableton Live", then "Mix L/R"
    3. Now launch Live. Any audio you play should be piped into Logic via the channel you created.
If you need to control Live via MIDI from Logic, all you need to do is create a Rewire object in the Environment, call it "Live", and change the "Device" parameter (again in the parameters box on the left of the screen) to "Live" and change the "Bus" parameter to whatever device you want to control within Live (or Reason, or any other Rewire slave). This is detailed on page 238-239 of the Logic Pro manual, which is available here (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/LogicPro7_ReferenceManual.pdf).
Sorry that I'm not in front of Logic at the moment, and some of the names of things might be slightly different. But this should get you started.

  • I have a "n" time capsule and "g" airport express

Hi, I'm trying to extend the range of my Airport Time Capsule (1st generation "n").  I have a "g" Airport Express and I've been trying to set it up as a remote base station (or do I mean "relay"?) to strengthen the signal in a distant room.  It's not working!  Is the problem that you can't use a "g" express with an "n" Time Capsule???  Do I need to buy an "n" Express, or is there something I'm doing wrong?

I'd suggest reading the Designing Airport Networks manual. There is a section on setting up a WDS with a Time Capsule and an Airport Express.

  • Time Capsule and older Airport Express

    Howdy,
I have an Time Capsule sharing my internet connection and creating my house's wifi network. I have an older 802.11g Airport Express in my living room that joins this wifi network and I use it for Airtunes. Is there a way to share my internet connection via the ethernet port on this Airport Express? There does not seem to be an "Extend a Wireless Network" option in the Airport Express configuration, like there is for the Time Capsule. I tried setting up the Time Capsule as a "WDS main" and the Airport Express as a "WDS Remote" but could not get it to work.
    Mikael
    Austin, TX

I just went through this today after receiving my Time Capsule. The answer is yes, you can make it work, but it is a little frustrating.
In the TC, set it for WDS main and put the Airport ID of the Airport Express in the box for that. Ensure that everything else is set right, like channel and security. Update the TC and after it says it is updated and is just waiting for the TC to come back online, close the airport utility.
Then reopen the airport utility, select the Airport Express, and set it to WDS Remote. In the box, put the Airport ID of the TC. Update the airport express and wait for it to report the update. then close airport utility.
I just waited after that and then reran Airport Utility and both were there with no errors. But that was after a few frustrating efforts.
If this doesn't work at first, unplug both of them and wait a short bit, then plug in the AE and then the TC. It should then work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can AEBS, wired Airport Express and WDS Airport Express devices be mixed?

I have been using an AEBS and three Airport Expresses (non N)in a WDS network using mixed b/g/n with two b/g mac minis, a b/g/n macbook and a b/g macbook for several years but have noticed the speed and reliability flucuating. I wish to do more music streaming and would like to improve the speed and reliabilty.
I have cat5 in several locations in the house.
Can I use the AEBS as a base wired to two Airport Expresses in different parts of the house(probably set as bridge) to extend my wireless g network and stream music to fixed points and then extend the network (?wds) with a non wired Express near one of the wired Express devices?
    Thanks
    Jim

My Macbook with "n" runs on the 5ghz network...it must be pulling that directly from the AEBS.
So I would guess that your AEBS is actually a simultaneous dual-band 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ... correct? If so, then it would certainly make sense that the MacBook is connected to its 5 GHz radio.
My wired AXs will be in two very different areas of the house. Is it possible to wire them as bridges, then set each as a WDS base to extend to their local area?
I assume that you intend to create two different WDSs ... correct? If so, this should be possible. You will need at least four AXs to do so. Each WDS would have the main base station connected to the AEBSn by Ethernet; configured as a bridge, and as the main in the WDS. For each of the mains, you would have another AX configured as the remote.
Since the mains are both configured as bridges, all wireless clients connected to either WDS should be able to see clients connected to either WDS or the AEBSn.
