I need to update from Mac OS X 10.5.8 to 10.7

I need to update my software. I bought a new Iphone5 and need itunes 7, but need to update software before I can do that. Is it possible to jump from Leopard to to Lion?

No; you need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.6 or newer to install Lion. Since iTunes 10.7 requires 10.6.8 and that's also a free download for people running Mac OS X 10.6, get a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store, and unless you have another reason to upgrade the computer's OS past 10.6.8, don't bother.

  • Need to update from Mac OSX 10.2.8...

I know, it's ancient... can I not just upgrade/update to v10.3.9 (mostly care so I can use an iPod w/iTunes)? Do I have to buy v10.3 (is this Panther or something?). Could this old OS be the reason I have such terrible luck with the internet (connecting sometimes, page loading, freezing...)? I know no one w/a mac to ask to help me, so it sits doing nothing... thanks! Maybe I should just give up.

    Welcome To Discussions Christine!
Some information in addition to the previous great replies.
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
In addition to AppleRescue, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, such as Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
As previously posted, once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac does meet the Tiger System Requirements, and you consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here.
Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

  • Need to update from MAC OS X server 10.4.11 to MAC mini server, any tips?

Hello I am having issues to migrate from a Mac OS x server version 10.4.11, processor 2GHZ PowerpcG5, to a brand new mac mini server running mavericks.
I been reading posts in the communities saying that I will need to get a snow leopard first(?) can I get MAC OS X snow leopard, or it needs to be MAC OS leopard server?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I do not know for certain, but what little experience I have with Server, my guess is that you'll have to get 10.6 Sever.
It's not available online, but might still be had by calling Apple & asking for... Part Number: MC588Z/A
Or, you might repost in one of these areas...

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • HT1444 I need to update my Mac version 10.4.11  can I instal the version OS X Lion Update 10.7.2

I need to update my Mac version 10.4.11  can I instal the version OS X Lion Update 10.7.2 as an update

If your iMac has a PowerPC processor, you can upgrade to OS 10.5 Leopard, which is the max OS.
If your iMac has an Intel processor, you can upgrade to OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, and possibly OS 10.7 Lion.
You have to buy OS upgrades. Updates to later versions are free from Apple's site.

Backups are not just for when updating your system. Hard disks fail. Disasters happen. You should be backing up your data, or ideally your entire system, regularly. If you haven't got one already get a large external hard disk, Firewire or Thunderbolt capable, and download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone (so that you can boot from it if necessary) of your system. Run CCC at least monthly, and every time before updating software, and daily if you change data that you can't afford to lose daily.

  • I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers.  I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8.  What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine?  Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?

Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

I always run a Time Machine backup before updating anything and recommend you run a backup as well. Paid apps should migrate over without any problem. If you have problems with VPP codes not transfering over properly, you can talk to your Apple SE or contact VPP for Education support and they can help you. While I haven't experienced any problems with updating, its never a guarantee that others will have the same experience.
    Good luck!
