I need to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.6.8... what's my next best option?

Can, and should I, upgrade from Mac OS X 10.6.8 to OS X 10.7.5... I've never bought anything through the Apple store but they don't appear to be helpful in providing guidance. Thank you.

Some people find issues with Mavericks 10.9.x in their older
Macs which were not exactly built with it in mind. So be
sure to have a backup plan where you could go back, first.
A tested-bootable clone on suitable external HDD is a good bet.
There have been some issue with third-party driver or other
support to make older hardware work in 10.9.2. Also some
older applications that ran fine in OS X 10.6.8 may not later.

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Mac OS X 10.0.4 was the last update for the 10.0 (Cheetah) release. There was a free update to 10.1 (Puma), but that was distributed via CD at the time, for the "early adopters" who bravely installed Mac OS X 10.0, and that can get you up to 10.1.5 with additional downloadable updaters. But I do not think the 10.1 update it is available as a free download, so you cannot go beyond 10.0.4 without obtaining a Mac OS X installer disk for a higher release.

Unless you intentionally select the "erase and install" option in the Mac OS X installer, your previous data (including a Mac OS 9 installation) should be retained on the drive.

The best option would be the one (OS) that meets your needs of what you want to do AND if you meet ALL the OS system requirements. Suggest that you read the system requirements of the OS you are interested in to make sure you meet all the requirements both hardware & software.

You will need to purchase a retail copy of the Tiger installation package. Since Apple no longer sells them you will need to look on the third-party marketplace. Try eBay or FastMac.com. Be sure you get the retail version. It consists of one DVD with a black label and large gray "X". Do not buy gray labeled OEM versions as the are machine specific and may not work. Do not buy an Upgrade disc as they will not work either unless you have a previous version of OS X already installed.
Since you failed to tell us the specific model you have we can't tell whether yours requires a firmware update. If it does it must be installed while booted directly into OS 9.1.
Your computer also must have at least 256 MBs of installed RAM (512 MBs or more is recommended) and at least 6-8 GBs of free space on the hard drive. A 500 MHz CPU or faster is recommended.

You can migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard - when asked to confirm that you have Lion on your Mac, just lie and say 'yes'.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it. You should delete your MobileMe email account from Mail.

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

Safari is download as an update to OSX.
It maybe yo have to update OSX version to get the latest Safari version.

Hi all,
I'm trying to upgrade from Mac OS Z1-9.1 to Mac OS X.3.2 using my spare and old G4.
I have the Installation CD's but for some reason the G4 isn't reading them so i can't update. Do i have to connect to the internet (currently no connection) to upgrade as far as possible first or is this "giant leap" from OS9.1 to OSX.3.2 just not possible in one go..?

Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to again purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD, on them.
The discs should also not say "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately."
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.
