I need to upgrade to iOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard but have a nonfunctional disc drive. Can I download the software or get it on my computer any other way?
I gave my 2010 iMac to my father but it has a nonfunctioning disc drive (cannot read any type of disc). It's operating on OS X 10.5 Leopard. We need to upgrade him to at least OS X 10.7 Lion, but judging by what I've read so far, we cannot do that without first installing OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I cannot find a way to download OS X 10.6, and having the disc shipped is not an ideal option. Does anyone know of a way I can download a legit copy? Another option — though I'm not sure it'll work — is to order the OS X 10.6 disc, transfer the files from the disc to a USB key on my newer Macbook Pro, then bring it over to my dad and install it on his iMac from the USB key. Does anyone have experience with this who knows if it will work or not? Thank you!

Need to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 but have a broken CD Drive - am I out of luck?
I have a Macbook from 2006 that is still kicking, except for being extremely out of date with the OSX. What would be the costs associated with upgrading, if this is even possible? My CD Drive has been broken for years. I'm encountering more and more sites that either can't operate on the version of Safari I have. Is it time for a new laptop? I'm struggling with the cost of Macs, but then again I've never had a virus in 8 years! Thanks!
If your Macbook has a core dup processor you can on,y upgrade as far as 10.6.8 but if your macbook is a late 2006 model with a core 2 duo you can upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. Keep in mind that older apps written for Power PC will not run beyond 10.6.8 and while Lion will run in 2gb of ram it won't run well. Snow Leopard is a solid system that I believe is still getting security updates and is probably your best choice at this time.

They already damaged you Mac by fooling with the BootCamp partition without knowing what they were doing. I wouldn't suggest haveing them help you do anything.

First, see if you can boot into the Recovery HD. Restart and hold down cmd-r until you see the gray screen. It should boot into Recovery. If your Mac shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, it will boot into Internet Recovery if it cannot boot into the Recovery HD on the hard drive.
They should have tried this at the store. -
ITunes can't download the software upgrade for my Ipod
I have a new Ipod Nano 8GB. When I connected to Itunes it tells me that there is a new software update available for it (I think it was version 1.1). ITunes then tries to download it.
The trouble is that I don't have broadband, and have no plans at present. My dial-up connection took over 3 hours to download ITunes when I first got the Ipod. I would be quite happy to let it take as long as that to download the software upgrade for the nano but I tried several times and the line kept dropping.
Is it available anywhere as a stand-alone download? (I can download using another machine I have access to which cannot have itunes installed on it)

- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

I had been thinking about upgrading my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion for months now and I finally decided to do it. I had already backed everything up and done everything to make sure I don't lose anything. The upgrade finished and I restarted my mac, it has been stuck on the start up screen. What can I do?
If it's truely stuck, force quit the machine by holding the power button. Then power back up. Do this only if you're confident in your backup.

Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find. Patriot is another brand recommended by ASC contributors but I have no experience with them.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. -

I need to re-install acrobat pro 9 - from where can I download the software?
My original purchase of Acrobat Pro 9 was downloaded online. I have not other copy and I need to reinstall to deal with corrupted files. Currently I am unable to download updates.

I've had two lapstops die within the last seven months. Last time I had to "deauthorize" all five computers, then re-up, since I couldn't deauthorize from the dead laptop. Now I need to go through it all again, but I understand that this can only be done once every 12 months. What else can I do? Can I get into the account and just deauhorize the dead computer?
You can try contacting Apple and explain that you have been using Windows PCs that last only a few months before failing. Perhaps they will make an exception to the 12 month wait.

I upgraded to mountain lion from snow leopard, but now some of my applications do not work, most specifically I would like to use my photo studio, but now it tells me that powerpc is no longer supported. Does anyone have any fixes to this problem? I would really like to continue to use software that I already have! Thank you for your help!
PPC software will not work in Mountain Lion because there is no longer any Rosetta emulator. You will only be able to run your older software by creating another partition on your hard drive on which you can install Snow Leopard. It need not be a large partition since you can still keep your files and programs on the main partition. You could also install Snow Leopard on an external drive from which to boot the computer.
To resize the drive do the following:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss. Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
After you create the new partition boot the computer from your Snow Leopard DVD and install Snow Leopard onto the new partition. -
Can I Upgrade my Black Macbook to Snow Leopard?

I have a black macbook that I got in early 2008. It has 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and it is on version 10.6.8. I do not have Snow Leopard though, and I know this because I cannot download the upgrade to Lion and other things that require me to have Snow Leopard.
So my question is, can I purchase the Snow Leopard Upgrade in the apple store and upgrade my black macbook to Snow Leopard? Then will I be able to download the free upgrades to Lion and Mavericks and such? I want to be able to use my two macbooks to share the mouse and keyboard between the two using SynergyKM, but this black macbook does not have Snow Leopard. Please help!
