I no longer have the gift card that I entered into my iTunes account.  The account shows my balance but when I go to purchase a song, it is asking for me to enter the redemption code and not applying my credit.

Some time ago, I entered a gift card into my iTunes account.  I did not use it all and the balance shows up in my account.  I no longer have the gift card. When I go to download a song now, it is asking for the redemption code instead of just taking the cost from the balance.  What can I do?
