I notice my fan whirs fast during streaming video; is there a workaround?

My fan gets up there (I am thinking it's in the 5000s RPMs, if I remember my reading correctly) when I'm playing streaming video (on netflix, using Silverlight). I get no fan noise when playing downloaded video (like an .mov) in Quicktime or MPlayer.
I have tried elevating my laptop so that the center part of it is totally free. The fans still go.
I am wondering if this is an issue with Firefox in some way. Are other browsers better at streaming video?
The sound may be necessary, but it is slightly annoying. And I notice I am getting slightly annoyed with it.
Misha

Are you both running Mountain Lion?
I get the impression that my mac runs hotter when watching any video (streamed or not) since installing ML than it did uner Snow Leopard, but I haven't confirmed this with any solid empirical testing (perhaps I'm just more sensitive to what's going on under the hood now than I was before).

Mac mini 2011 2.3 GZ. When I watch Youtube streaming video fullscreen or video chat with someone on Skype, the fan kicks into high gear and gets really noisy. Fan gets to about 5200 rpm and CPU up to 75C. I don't get the heat or fan noise during avi/Quicktime/VLC playback, or an Skype, audio alone. I don't recall this on my 2009 Mac Mini. Is this normal?

  • Safari Crashes Computer during Streaming Video play.

So, for the past week or three I've been having some problems with Safari on my Old Macbook Pro, namely that when I'm trying to watch streaming video it'll freeze up. But not always. And it's only the video that freezes, not the sound. That'll play fine, but I'll only get a still image. At first I thought it was Hulu, but it's been happening on quite a number of video sites. So... yeah.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what did you do to fix it? Is there an update I need?

You need to uninstall the version of Flash Player plugin you have and reinstall a new copy.
    Go here to uninstall Flash.

As with any software installations, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Computer sleeps during streaming video

Bought this lovely second hand G5 and its great except it goes to sleep while watching streaming video online.
I have tried watching videos from such sites as; YouTube, MySpace, CollegeHumor, ect. on both Safari and Firefox. Anywhere between 30 seconds to a minute into the video my computer puts itself into sleep mode.
    HELP! Suggestions?

Hi LaPotter, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sounds like a Heat/Video card problem.
Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.

  • Netflix streaming blocked, is there a workaround?

I just upgrade from a Gen 1 iPad to a new iPad Air2.
On the Gen 1 I was able to stream Netflix during lunch with the netflix app. Other folks around me on this same network no longer could on their PCs or iPhones.
Bring the brand new Air to work today, app launches but cannot stream no error just loads and loads.
Apparently there are 'aliens' that are blocking streaming because they are anti enjoying downtime when you have a break.
I relize that there must be something either with the tech of the old ipad or the older version of the app that was sneaking through the aliens survalence.
Does anyone know what the difference might be, would it be something within the app version that they changed perhaps a protocol being using? I tried to search but either it was not useful or about using VPNs.
Or is the new iPad Air itself using newer technology and getting captured?
    This is all on WiFi
Just wondering if there is any change I can make (not setting up VPN bc that will probably be flagged) or download an old version of the app to possibly be able to enjoy Netflix at lunch again.
    Happy Holidays!
    Thank you
    Mackitten

What you'd have to do is this:
    1) Trash the Netflix app that's in iTunes
    2) Connect the old iPad to the computer
    3) Right-click on its icon in the sidebar & choose Transfer Purchases
That should bring the old Netflix app into your iTunes library. You could then delete the current version that's on your new iPad & install this older one.
You can usually install an old version of an iPad app onto a newer iPad, it's just the reverse that's not doable.

  • My fan is extremely loud when i stream videos...

my fan is extremely loud when i stream videos...is this normal? My laptop is only a month old

It isn't uncommon that your fan should run when streaming videos, especially flash.
Is you laptop properly ventilated ? ----> If it's resting on the bed, cushion, carpet or some other soft surface that could be blocking the vents, or which doesn't allow heat to dissipate, your laptop will heat up more than usual, and hence the fan will have to run faster.
Is your laptop on a cool surface that is ventilated? (like a wooden table)?
Are you running Lion? Ever since I upgraded to Lion my fan is almost always running, video or not.

  • Problem viewing streaming video in some wifi networks, but not others

When I am at work (university), I can not view YouTube videos or video streaming from news sites such as cnn mobile on my ipod touch 2g.
    <m.cnn.com/videos.jsp?ckey-cnn)06#__1_>
When I called Apple support, they had me reset-restore. I still had the problem. I went to the Apple store Genius bar and the problem no longer existed, the videaos downloaded and played from both sites!
But at my diner and at work, I get the message, "This movie could not be played" in a popup box with an OK button. The same message appears if I use the YouTube application. I click on any video, and the same popup appears. In Cnn the popup is preceded by a shaded capital Q that looks like the blue Quicktime Q; in Youtube the pupup is preceded by a YouTube icon in gray with the "Tube" surrounded by the rounded rectangle, their icoon...
At the Apple store the popup never appeared, and the videos downloaded and played.
I have no trouble playing movies I have downloaded from iTunes.
I did not have this problem when I initially got my iPod Touch, and I think it appeared after one of the last two system upgrades, but I am not sure.
I am curious that it the problem happens at two places, my diner and at work.
The speed of my wireless work network, as judged by the ipod app speed test is 9915 kbps download and 6971 kbps upload, so plenty fast.
The first time I noticed this issue was with the application "At Bat Lite" which also won't play video highlights at work.
I do not have WiFi at home
Any thoughts about what would cause this lack of functionality apparantly only at some networks but not others?
Oh, one more piece of data: at work a Macbook will play YouTube both on ethernet and using wifi...
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions,
    Paul

It seems I have two networks available at work, one is behind our firewall, and I login to it. This is the network that I can't view streaming video. There is also a "Guest" network that I don't need to login to. This one works with the YouTube and the news site videos.
Thus, I conclude there is a setting that WiFi network administrators can invoke that specifically can block streaming video on some protocols (whatever the ipod touch uses) and not others (whatever the Macbook uses). But the same router hardware supplying the Guest network does not block these protocols. Presumably this has to do with security on one side of the firewall(?)
Anyway, apparently outside of the WiFi controls available in the ipod touch settings.
    Weird...

  • Why can't I can't stream videos or attach documents/pictures to emails

About 2 months ago, I started having problems w/ Firefox. It started that I couldn't attach a document on my email. Then I noticed that I could no longer stream videos on websites such as Hulu. I still can't stream videos and when I try to attach a document to email, I get a red warning saying the document did not attach. I had to go back to Internet Explorer to perform these actions.

I don't know. They play just fine on mine. Haw are you trying to view them?

  • Apple TV disconnects when streaming video from iMac.

I am using my Apple TV to stream video from my iMac to my TV using AirPlay display.  Every 5 minutes or so, it disconnects.  The video freezes on the TV but will continue playing on the iMac.  Then after a few seconds it disconnects completely and the apple TV will return to the menu screen and I then have to reconnect.  I also have noticed that it only disconnects when streaming video.  I'm able to use the Airplay to display what's on my computer screen and it works fine without disconnecting. I have no issues with the connectivity of my internet, there is always a full signal. I've been searching for answers on this and have found similar issues have happened to other users but none of the suggestions have worked so far.
    Very frustrated... please help!

  • Live streaming video issues

I look after a little old ladies PC in Australia from Canada.  She used to watch live video from a webcam in Canada looking at the snow & ice but now with a new HP PC she can't view the live feed... or to be more precise she can view it but the site won't load properly and displays a still image.
If the browser is refreshed the image updates but is a still image.
We can see the time-stamp so we know there is a snapshot of the video being taken but it won't update with the live feed.
I did read other posts about similar issues but can't seem to find an answer.
I have updated her Windows media player, uninstalled then re-installed both Flash & Shockwave to the latest versions but still the video won't play properly.
She can watch other live streaming videos but there just seems to be an issue with this one in particular.
I have tried the same webcam feed from other PCs in Canada and the UK with no issues.
She has an HP610-1010a Touchsmart with ATI Radeo HD5570 graphic card installed.
Can anyone suggest something else I may be overlooking...?
    Thanks

  • Watching streaming videos on TV through iPad mini

My parents have an iPad mini. I got them a subscription to netflix and would like to buy a cable to connect iPad mini to their tv so they can watch streaming videos on there. A rep from Apple told me that there is no such cable and I must buy Apple TV.  Is that correct?

  • Streaming video and bluetooth stereo

I have the Blackberry Curve with T-Mobile with v4.5.0.81 and the Motorola HT820 stereo bluetooth headset.  I am able to listen to regular music and videos on the microsd card on the HT820, but when I play streaming video online there isn't an option to activate the HT820.  Is this a limitation of streaming video online, a BB software issue, or a setting I need to change.  Thanks!

The curve 8330 handles some streaming formats... With the MobiTV app I'm told you can watch streaming video of various cable channels including news and discovery channels and such. You can also view some video clips from www.youtube.com Not the flash clips of course! As far as streaming audio you can download slacker radio and flycast and have a semblance of streaming audio. I'm hoping for winamp/real audio type support of streaming media very soon to listen to various internet radio stations that aren't included in the aforementioned radio apps. Sidenote: Money rules everything, everywhere

  • Ram upgrade to 2GB - fan running faster

I have just upgraded my intel mac mini from 512 MB to 2 GB using a kingston upgrade kit (KTA-MB667K2/2G).
The system is performing a lot better but there is an annoying "trouble": when 2 GB are installed the fan is running more fast and more often then with 512MB.
During my tests, I have see that while using OS X the system is able to regulate the speed, it goes from very slow to very fast but it moves to fast more often then before and the system is definetly making more noise.
The bigger problem happens when booting using windows XP: when 2 GB of RAM are installed the fan is always running at top speed or near to top speed.
That is not happening while using the original 512 MB.
I have tried to reset the SMC by using the apple istructions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
but it didn't make any difference.
I have double checked all wires,I have switched from 512MB to 2 GB and from 2 GB to 512MB three times(!) but nothing has changed:
    - when using 512MB fan runs slow;
    - when using 2 GB fan is still able to change speed but is running fast more often.
Further more, to test, I have also left disconnected the fan speed cable in the front side, and in such way the fun starts at max speed and runs at fast speed all the time. So it is not a trouble with such connection.
    Is that normal this behavior?
Does anybody have noticed any fan speed difference after RAM upgrade?
About BootCamp and XP running fan at max speed, could be that reinstall them could solve the "always on" fan trouble with 2 GB?
Thanks a lot for any help.

I have some updates about the problem.
I was thinking that it was a my fault about some missing setup needed when installing more ram to mac mini.
So, today, I have moved to a local apple center and I have asked them to install the RAM for me... they do, and it happens the same thing: the fun was running very fast quite often under OS X and was always fast under bootcamp-XP.
I have asked them why this happens and if that was normal, but they have no other mac mini with such amount of ram and they never see it before. They suggest me to test it for a week and eventually to give them the mac for a day to make some hardware tests.
Later, back into my office, the noise was too high and too annoying so I have called again apple to explain the situation.
They told me that they have no reports about similar problems, that it should not make more noise when adding RAM. They suggest me to try remove and reinstall better the RAMs or to try different RAMs (I am using kingston kit KTA-MB667K2/2G).
So I have also phoned to kingston support, and they say that it is a strange bahavior, that they don't have reports about that too. They are now investigating the problem and they let me know something in next days.
They also put to my attention the fact that the computer is able to see and work well with the 2GB memory, so the memory is working correctly. They think this is something related to apple hardware/firmware and could be that apple should fix it in next realases.
Unfortunatly, all this new infos and all the time lost for a "simple" memory upgrade didn't solve my troubles and I still cannot use the mac like I need.
So I have continued my tests by changing the kensington Dimms with other 2 GB dimms by Nanya technologies that were installed on my centrino duo notebook.
Mac mini was able to see and work well with them too, now the fun speed is a little bit slowly then using kingston ones but still more fast than with 512MB.
Bootcamp-XP is still not usable due to high fan speed and the high noise. OS X seems to control better the fan speed but it goes high there too for any little thing you do.
So I have made one more test suggested by kingston:
I have started mac mini while only one kingston dimm were inside.
In this way the mac mini was making some less noise that using the two nanya dimms, but it was still to high.
The last test I made was to check the cpu temperature with different amounts of RAM and results were interesting.
Using OS X with 512MB, the cpu temperature is about 33 C while iddle; if I try to start parallels desktop with guest windows XP, temperature goes up to 40 C and the fan is still running at quite low levels.
Instead, while 1 GB of RAM was installed, cpu iddle temperature was 35 C and starting parallels desktop will result in temperature levels till 50 C.
So there was a difference of about 10 C.
While doing these test I have left the mac mini open, so once stopped, I was able to quickly feel the RAM temperature with my finger and it was quite hot.
I didn't try temperature with both 2GB dimms, but I belive it will be surely more high.
So what I am thinking now is that probably apple is aware about higher temperature inside when using more RAM, so the bios starts the mac mini with the fun running faster because it detects the 2 GB memory.
OS X is able to control someway the fun so it is not always running fast (but quite often) while using boot camp with XP becomes impossible due to the fan always at max speed.
I don't think apple's rams could work at lower temperature than kingston ones, so the dubt now is that things are correct in this way.. so intel mac mini with 1/2GB could be a shame due to high level of fan noise... or... my mac mini has something wrong.
Is anybody here with a mac mini and 2 GB of RAM?
Anybody could make some test about that?
Thanks a lot for any help
