I only import referenced pictures, why y do I have large  Aperture library?

Firstly, thank you all for your answers to my previous posts
You are helping me wonderfully in migrating to Aperture
Given my increasingly limited disk space and other management reasons, i only import referenced pictures leaving them in their original locations.
1. I seem to have a what i think is a large and growing Aperture library even though i save no images to the library (eg 1.2G for 2000 pics averaging 300K in size). Is this just the overhead required for using the application and all its edits, previews and references or could i be doing something wrong?
2. If i drag and drop a picture into a project and folder, will it always be a referenced picture or wil it depend on some setting somewhere to determine what happens with a drag and drop import?
Thanks in Advance

I'm a relatively new Aperture user, but I think your library size is comparable to what I'm seeing, and it is previews, editing info etc that takes up the space.
As I understand it, if you drag and drop within Aperture, a referenced file will simply be re-indexed in the new location but remain a references file. If you drag and drop from a folder outside Aperture into Aperture, you will import the file rather than reference it. So far, from my experimenting, you need to use the import dialogue to keep it to referenced files.

I have an iPhoto library with only Jpeg's in it. I just installed Aperture 3.5 and imported several RAW photos in Aperture. Shouldn't I now have an Aperture library?

Should I create an Aperture library and import all of my photos from iPhoto to the new Aperture library? Then delete my iPhoto library entirely?  Just trying to get my library structure correct from the get-go as I plan to shoot only in RAW.
That is not an easy question. There are still a few glitches with the unified library approach. For example, the new iWork applications will not yet show the Aperture library in the Media Browser, only the current iPhoto library. If you are using iWork with your photolibrary, keep it an iPhoto library.
And it is unclear, what will happen, when Aperture or iPhoto will be upgraded to newer versions. Right now you need the latest iPhoto version to be able to upgrade older iPhoto libraries, if you want to open them in Aperture. So probably you will need to upgrade iPhoto as well, if you keep your library an iPhoto library, when both Aperture and iPhoto will be upgraded to Aperture 4 and iPhoto 12.0 or similar. In the long run it will be safer to convert the library to an Aperture library, if you do not want to keep updating iPhoto, but that can wait.
If you want to convert the iPhoto library to an Aperture library, back up your iPhoto library.
Then create a new Aperture library (with File > Switch to Library > Other/New ) and then import your iPhoto library into Aperture using the command "File > Import > Library" and select your iPhoto library.
You will need plenty of space on the drive with the new library. Merging a library into another one will  temporarily a lot of working space and may take a long time - several hours for a large library, without visible progress.

  • How do I import a large Aperture library from an external disk?

I have a large Aperture library, about 110GB of photos, it currently resides on an external USB3 drive for space reasons.  I'd like to migrate this into Photos, but every time I try I get an error: "There is not enough disk space to migrate your library. It is estimated that you need at least 21GB of additional free space."
From finder, if I get info on my Mac's main drive, it says I have 297.51 GB available, and on disk, my Aperture library is 105.8 GB.  There is almost 3x as much space available as I should need!?  And after the first time I tried this I freed up an additional 30 GB of space and still received the same message, still claiming to need 21 GB of space.
My drive has FileVault enabled, would that matter?

I experienced the exact same problem. I have a iPhoto Library in another volume (or partition) with very small free space, while main/system partition (Macintosh HD) has big enough free space.
Turned out, the one that should have big free space is the volume/partition that contains original iPhoto Library (to import from), not the system partition. So, I freed up some space, reopen Photos app (while holding Alt key), and select the iPhoto Library to import. It works!

  • Why am I seeing my entire Aperture library on ATV?

I have Aperture selected as to where I want iTunes to get my photos from. I then have the box checked for SELECTED albums etc and then went through and only checked 2 or 3 albums leaving the rest unchecked.
When I go to the PHOTOS section within my Apple TV, it is showing me my complete library of photos!! I do NOT want all those images showing up, just the ones I selected.
Anyone know why this is happening? I checked my iPod and its displaying exactly the albums I want to see but for some reason Apple TV is showing me my entire library of photos.

    no replies....wow

  • In 10.8 I opened Preview and saw my Aperture albums and then chose the desired image to work on.  In 10.9.2 Preview/File/Open only shows on the LHS every single pic in my Aperture Library - I can't select directly from the parts of the Library

This is my first time using Apple Support and I inadvertently put the entire question in the discussion header. Please refer to it. I'd appreciate any help.
    Thank you

Download the demo and activate with your serial number:

Be sure to follow the special instructions.
You will also probably need to run the un-installer first to clean up the old files.

  • TS2518 What happened to all my images or why are they not in the aperture library after upgrading to 3.2.4 How do I find them?

I have recently upgraded my Aperture to 3.2.4 after doing so I found my library has disappeared, how do I search for it or find it again? Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you fix this?

Have you checked the size of your apparently empty Aperture Library, if it really is empty? Sometimes a filter prevents the contents from showing. Are all search fields (in the Inspector, the Browser) cleared?
Sometimes an Aperture Library is written to the top level of your system drive, if you are having disk trouble.
In the Finder menu bar click "Go" > Go to Folder
    and enter a Slash-character :  "/", hit return
This will open a Finder Window at the top level of your system volume. Browse from there, if you can find a trace of your aperture library, but be careful not to change or delete anything.

P.S. do you have a backup of your aperture Library?

  • My computer has 16GB of memory, but premiere elements only reports 4GB.  Why?

My computer has 16GB of memory, but premiere elements only reports 4GB.  Why?

    olsenj46
You have not given us enough information to help you.
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
For Premiere Elements to take full advantage of your computer resources it needs to be a version that runs as a 64 bit application in a 64 bit system. If you have Premiere Elements 10, 11, or 12 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit that will be the case. If you have Premiere Elements 11 or 12 on Mac 64 bit, that will be the case.
All others, Premiere Elements will be a 32 bit application running as 32 bit in a 32 bit computer operating system OR a 32 bit application running in the 32 bit compatibility mode of a 64 bit system. Key thought here is that, 32 bit system has maximum supported installed RAM = 4 GB and 3 GB or less of that are available.
Please fill in the necessary details so that we can go from generalizations to what you actually have.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • How can the artist view pictures in music be updated in IOS 7?  My device (Ipod Touch 5th) used to have the artist pictures but when I restored it from factory default, it only used the pictures from the album.

Please help.  I have updated to the IOS 7 and there was a cool feature in the Music app wherein when you view an album artist, i think apple updates the picture of that artist from their gallery.  But when I decided to restore to factory defaults, it never came back and only uses the picture from the albums.

I have the same problem.  After a full restore my iphone 5 does not display the artist photos, but it does show the correct album covers once i go into that group.  Instead i get a grey box with diagonal writing saying the band name but no picture.

  • Why are my masters offline in aperture after restore from vault (not referenced)

I really hope someone can help as I am at my whits end!
I recently had to do a clean install of lion and so dutifly backed up my Aperture 3 library to a vault. 100% of my library was managed and I have never referenced files and always avoided it.
I then restored the aperture library from the vault.
When the new library opens all the files and project organisation is there, but quite a few images are showing as offline.
I have noticed that the number of offline images is going up by the minute. Something is changing the state of the images.
I have checked inside the vault and all the masters are there, but for some reason aperture things they are missing. When selecting the "offline" images and then consolidate masters it gives me the alert that there are no referenced files!
I have tried repairing and then rebuilding the database but this has no effect.
Does anyone know whats going on or how I can recover the situation?
I really do look forward to some help from you guys.
    Many Thanks.
    Brad

    It seems so Puzzling Shutter.
I have the Aperture Library and the Vault both on the internal hard drive.
I prepared the vault yesterday and according to aperture it was up to date (updated it several times to make sure)
My vault was on an external hard drive and I copied it to the mac before restoring.
Once I restored. The library is the same size as the vault.
When I use the meta search bar in aperture and select show offline images it shows 144 but each time i come out of the all photos view and go back in this number creeps up!
When I then go and check the vault (on the mac) and the library, the file arent there either but the size of the library and vault hasnt gone down.
Do you think it could be because I copied the vault to the mac before restoring from it. Do you think I should try restoring from the vault as it is on the hard drive?
    I really appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • I'm organising my Aperture library today and I'm going to go through my photos folder, import the images to Aperture and then delete the original folders. Just curious if deleting the source folders is a big no-no or not.

Topic title basically sums it up.

Alright. For my case was, my source files are inside the Document folders. Since importing the pictures into Aperture, deleting the source files/folders did not cause any problems with Aperture.
Whether it is a good idea or would depend on how comforatble you are with the idea in the first place. On one hand you can save up precious hard disk space, while on the other if the Aperture library gets corrupted, you might lose everything. Of course, having a backup of the Aperture library helps, as well as a time machine backup of it. On top of that you can also have an Aperture Vault to backup the library to a external drive.
In summary i think a reasonlable backup plan is just as important regardless of whether or not the source file is in which location. For my case, i only have the Aperture library as all of my source. A time machine backs up everything including my library, in addition to that, i also use Aperture Vault to back up to another external drive just in case.

  • Change Imported Files from Store in Current Location to Aperture Library

    Aperture Newbie
I have chosen to import my files by using the Store Files: drop down selection "In the Aperture Library". That is what I prefer.
However, I accidentally imported a large selection fo files and chose the Pictures folder instead of the In the Aperture Library selection. Is there a way to change it without removing the pictures and re-importing. I've done a lot of edits on the pictures in this project and would rather not start over.

  • Preview and Pictures lost in my Aperture library after Leopard Upgrade :(((

    Hi,
So I was using Aperture 1.5.5 on Tiger 10.4.10 with bench of folders and pictures in it. I backup my Aperture Library file, and then reinstalled my whole system with Leopard, then reinstalled Aperture from original CD, then did the upgrade to 1.5.6 and then put back my Aperture Library from my backup.
Then I start Aperture and begin of bad surprises When I click on a picture, it displays just one instant the preview of it, then I got a marroon background with and text that says (I translate as it's in french on my computer): Picture format not managed !! What does it mean ?? all these pictures opened smoothly with previous version of Aperture on TIger !!!
If I do a right click on that, picture displays correctly !!!!
Also something bad, I have some folders which contained bunch of pictures where I can see in list on left correct number of pictures, but when I select it, it looks empty (I have checked by hand in Aperture Library files and pictures are still there !!
What's wrong ? I must confess I'm pretty disappointed by how Apple manage migration to Leopard of that program where update to make it fully Leopard compatible is released just day of release of Leopard
    Thanks for your help
    Vincèn

    Vincèn,
have you double-checked that Aperture uses the correct library (in Preferences) ?
Did you try pulling the Aperture prefs over from your backup also ?
And did you try a rebuild (depressing Cmd and Option during Aperture startup until the message comes up, choose Rebuild now, get a Coffee).
    Note:
Even if all your images are referenced it's a good idea to use a Vault, as it backs up the structure (not the referenced images, of course).
Also ranting doesn't help getting answers. Asking a straight question is best, OK ?
I, like you, did a clean install and everything works just fine (everything, nor just Aperture).

  • Importing Series of pictures -- Why only 4?

    I have a group of graphics files called logo1, logo2, logo3,
etc. There are 15 of them. When I choose "import to stage" and
select the first file, I get a message that Flash will
automatically import the other files in the series. This would be
great. However, when I choose this, it only imports 4 of the 15
files. I've tried different names, even just naming them "1" "2"

    preference I need to reset?

No preference I have ever heard of - i have no idea why this
would happen - there must be something
wrong with the 5th image? How big are these images?

  • If I move a picture from one project to another in aperture why doesn't the jpeg change folders if all my pictures are referenced?

I started importing all my pictures into Aperture and have been debating whether to use a managed or referenced library.  I'm leaning toward referenced, but before import everything that way, I do a couple of "test drives".
In Aperture, I moved a photo from one project to another expecting that the jpeg in finder would move from the original folder to the new one, but it didn't.  Anyone know why?  Is there a way to make this happen?  Is it bad that I want this to happen?  Should I just use a managed library.  I like having control of the actual files (thus wanting to go with a referenced library).
    Any thoughts?
    Mark

In Aperture, I moved a photo from one project to another expecting that the jpeg in finder would move from the original folder to the new one, but it didn't.
Mark, Aperture does not store the originals organized by project, but by the date of the Import Session. So moving an image to a different project will not change, were the original file is stored.
This has a big advantage for backing up the originals. If they never move or change, you do not have to backup the originals other than directly after importing, if your library is referenced. And even incremental backups of a managed library are quicker.
Is there a way to make this happen?
You can always use the command "File > Relocate" to move the original files anywhere you want.
Is it bad that I want this to happen?  Should I just use a managed library.  I like having control of the actual files (thus wanting to go with a referenced library).
If it is bad, will depend on why you want to have control of your originals. If you just want to know where they are, it is o.k., or if you don't have enough space on the drive with the library and need to split the library across several drives. But it would be bad to move, edit, or access the referenced originals in any way. Let Aperture do the handling,  or you will be risking broken references.
Aperture has several buil-in ways to show you the original: The "M" key will switch the Browser to the original, "File > Export > Original" will give you an exact copy of the original, or you can relocate the file to another folder.  I simply open the aperture Library in iPhoto, when I want to view my managed originals. iPhoto has a command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original" that will show you also the managed originals in the "Masters" folder inside the Aperture/iPhoto Library package.
