I only want to restore my files, no system files on a new install of SL OSX

My MacBook Pro i7, bought in April 2010 runs like a dog. Beach balls quite often just opening apps like Safari. Generally anything I do on it results in beach balls more than normal. I don't see anything out of the ordinary eating up CPU or memory in Activity Monitor. I have repaired permissions, reset PRAM, run ONYX, and I just can't get this machine working like it was on a fresh OS, so I want to put a clean OS on it from scratch.
On my Time Machine, I have it setup to only back up my files, mainly my Itunes library and Aperture library and my Documents folder.
Can I reinstall Snow Leopard clean, with Itunes and Aperture all updated, then import these files?
I was thinking that I would install Snow Leopard and Aperture, and then update the system, and then somehow restore all my files from Time Machine.
Is this possible?

IMO, a clean install is a waste of time. I've not done that and my current version dates from Jaguar and migrated through two previous machines. Clone your current boot volume, boot into it, and then reinstall Snow Leopard on top of it. That should fix your slowdowns. If so, run Software Update and bring it up to date. Once that's working like you want it, erase your original boot volume and restore the clone. If the updated clone doesn't improve performance, see these and then repeat the drill.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    Firstly, you cannot selectively restore content from your iCloud backup. Secondly, your contacts are not part of your iCloud backup.

    I recently had to replace my 2009 Macbook Pro's hard drive.  I had the apple store upgrade the OS to Mountain Lion while it was in being repaired.  I want to restore all of my old data and files.  If I perform a restore from Time Machine, with a date prior to having the hard drive replaced, will it revert back to the old OS?

    No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.

  • I want to restore the preinstalled OS X Maverick on my new MacBook after upgraded installed Yosemite gets stuck at load bar

    Hi,
    After my free upgrade to OS X Yosemite
    on my new MacBook with preinstalled OS X Maverick,
    the MacBook starts with the new colorful Yosemite-Screen
    and I can login to my MacBook-Account succesfully;
    but then, after my password is accepted
    the Yosemite load_display_line loads to a 1/3 only and the Yosemite stucks at this point.
    As offered during my tries to fix the problem on the MacBook,
    I had my MacBook checked by Apple
    and received the code for "no problems, my MacBook is alright": ADP000.
    Is somebody here who knows how
    to restore the preinstalled OS X Maverick on my new MacBook
    after the upgraded installation of Yosemite?

    Here's how:
    Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
    Partition and Format the hard drive:
    Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Backup and restore of Windows 7 system files, photos and files, etc.

    I want to backup all my Windows 7 system files and everything on my laptop to My Book on file E, external storage as my laptop may quit on me and I have no backup of files - also my CD drive is not working on my laptop so have bought the external storage.
    The back-up did not complete to My Book because an Error Code:  Ox8078002A and Internal error: (OxC0003005) appeared in a window.  I called My Book WD support and they said it was a Microsoft error as they did not have your codes.

    Although I'm trying to find a device driver fix for this, from what I've read, the Seagate 3TB USB hard drives are reporting the sector size of 4096 instead of the 512 that Win7 backup requires, and so it will NEVER work.  Since this USB drive is reporting
    4096, it should be much faster doing an image backup, IF the software supports it.  But, most of the image backup software is still looking for that 512, and most is much slower than it should or could be.
    So, here are the choices today:
    Using Windows 8 will NOT fix the problem, since Windows 8.0's Windows 7 backup (that was still included in Win8 as an option) still has the 4096 / 512 problem
    Simply use a different USB drive, or modified one.
            Seagate's 2GB drive reports 512, so that should work.  (I've used it successfully on another Win7 Box
            I've heard reports that WD's hard drive does not have this problem, so try that.
            Remove the drive and direct connect it using a SATA cable
            Reformat the drive in away to report 512 to Windows
    Talk Microsoft into fixing Win7 backup
            Unlikely, since they have "moved on" to "file history in Win 8 and 8.1"
            Microsoft removed ALL the Win 7 backup ability from Windows 8.0 in Windows 8.1
    Talk Seagate into fixing the USB drivers
            Research if it is Microsoft's USB driver, or Seagate's, or another third party
    Find someone to replace the device driver so that the drive can report 512 or 4096 on demand
            This last option doesn't sound quite as hard as it looks, assuming you are already in the device driver business and have the capability to do it and do it properly and safely
    Get a "storage consumer report" before buying any hard drive, OS upgrade, or new PC to make sure that you can adequately protect your computer.  And, IMO, Windows 8.1's storage solution will fail to deliver what most users need, when they need it, IMO.
    I will try to update this or repost this elsewhere when I have updated information on how best to solve this problem.  Simply do a Google search for this tag:  #OCAWin7BackupFailsSeagate3TB and that may return my updated results.

  • Mackeeper has left files....will a new install of Mavericks mean all Mackeeper stuff will be gone?

    I am uninstalling mackeeper but it seems there are files still left........will a new install of Mavericks mean all Mackeeper stuff will be gone?
    Or how do I get rid of everything related to it?
    Tx

    You may have to reinstall to completely uninstall. See -> How to uninstall MacKeeper.
    With the newset version, all you hsould have to do is to drag the MK icon from the Applications folder to the Trash. You'll get a warning to confirm that you want to completely remove the crud.
    No need to wait until Mavericks is released - get rid of it now!

  • Spotlight Treating Files as System Files

    hi,
    after ugrading to snowleopard i noticed that spotlight fails to show certain files when i type their names in the search field. i have already tried the obvious solutions such as rebuilding the index without any success.
    few things i noticed:
    - the files are on a volume mounted on /Volumes/Data
    - the files are in a subdirectory "private"
    - they are contained in the spotlight index
    weird thing is that if i do an mdls on one of the files spotlight does not show i am getting this:
    mdls /Volumes/Data/private/entertainment/music/nightwish/albums/Oceanborn/Sleeping\ Sun.mp3
    kMDItemContentCreationDate = 2008-11-11 15:46:43 +0100
    kMDItemContentModificationDate = 2009-09-14 14:26:42 +0200
    kMDItemContentType = "public.mp3"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "public.mp3",
    "public.audio",
    "public.audiovisual-content",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
    kMDItemDisplayName = "Sleeping Sun.mp3"
    kMDItemFSContentChangeDate = 2009-09-14 14:26:42 +0200
    kMDItemFSCreationDate = 2008-11-11 15:46:43 +0100
    kMDItemFSCreatorCode = ""
    kMDItemFSFinderFlags = 0
    kMDItemFSHasCustomIcon = 0
    kMDItemFSInvisible = 0
    kMDItemFSIsExtensionHidden = 0
    kMDItemFSIsStationery = 0
    kMDItemFSLabel = 0
    kMDItemFSName = "Sleeping Sun.mp3"
    kMDItemFSNodeCount = 0
    kMDItemFSOwnerGroupID = 0
    kMDItemFSOwnerUserID = 502
    kMDItemFSSize = 6023788
    kMDItemFSTypeCode = ""
    kMDItemKind = "MP3 Audio File"
    *kMDItemSupportFileType = (*
    MDSystemFile
    why is it considered a system file in kMDItemSupportFileType? i also noticed when i do an mdls on the "private" directory it is also considered a system file/folder.
    all other files that are shown by spotlight do not have the MDSystemFile type. is there any way i can get this fixed so that spotlight does not consider any of my files on /Volumes/Data system files anymore and shows them?
    any help is appreciated...
    cheers
    --bruno

    The problem is the name of the folder "private"--evidently Spotlight will only regard a folder of that name, no matter where it is, as the same class as the official /private folder, which is a container for system files. While Spotlight will index anything it considers a system file, it won't display search results containing such a file unless you explicitly tell it to.
    I'm afraid you only have two choices:
    1. Rename "private" to something else
    2. Do your Spotlight searches by Command-F and put the option for System Files in your drop down list so you can access it reasonably quickly
    I suspect the easiest is to just rename the folder, dropping the "e" will solve the problem. Indeed, "privat" is a perfectly good word in several languages. Pretend you speak Catalan, that's kind of classy.

    My problem is a variation on what appears to be a constant theme around here. Windows XP will recognize my 4G iPod Nano (16GB). It even gives it a drive letter. However, iTunes will only display the Software Version and Serial Number on the DEVICES Summary tab page. • I only wanted to restore my settings but i ended up restoring everything (i.e. all data got deleted), how can i get my pictures and books back?

    How can i return my phone back to what it was 10 minutes ago and no i haven't backed up my phone since last year so i do a restore from what i have in my computer, this will only return my phone back to what it was a year ago. please help.

    If you haven't backed the device up in a year, and you did not copy the pictures and other data  off before restoring it, then your stuff is gone.
    It is important that you back up your data, just like with your computer, regular backups are vital for recovering data when things happen.

  • Does Firefox have an equivalent of IE 9's System Restore? Quote: " It helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time."

    If, for example, when using IE 9, I download something that causes my computer to misbehave, I can use IE 9's "System Restore" capability to revert my hard drive back to a point in the past when the drive was running correctly. The software will show me the "safe points" in time to which I can revert; I select one of the proposed times, run System Restore, and the computer will work as it did at the time I selected.

    amin.mina.it -- You are right. Windows System Restore will restore your system to whatever the date you dedicated. If you are having any problems with your PC, or even problems with your browsers, you can always choose to restore your system to an earlier date. Please read this thread for further details.
    http://support.mozilla.com/ast/questions/727284
    If you are having problems with Firefox only but not your PC, you can just follow cor-el's instruction to do a clean reinstall instead. If you decide to do a System Restore, and having problems with Firefox afterward, follow cor-el's instructions also to fix the problem.
    Good luck.

    Hi shuvs,
    Based on your description, you would most likely want to set it up as new, then simply add your iTunes account info during setup. There are also several other ways to add your existing content to your new iPad. You may find the following page helpful:

    I see that you purchased your notebook in the US but are from India.  Your notebook go a virus while in India and you did not have your recovery disks so you installed Windows 7 Ultimate  and you would now like to return you notebook back to factory.
    Did you create recovery disk after setting up the notebook for the first time?
    When you installed Windows 7 Ultimate did you format the entire drive including the recovery partition?  To check go to Disk Management and click on show hidden partitions.  Is the recovery still there?
    If so and if you have not yet created your recovery disk you can do it now.  Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 7)
