I open the case to solve grey startup screen - what could it be?

Lately I've attempted to wake my powerbook after moving between home and work (generally by bike) and get no response. Cold reboot and subsequent attempts at startup result in a chime and grey screen with no apple. Booting from startup disk and looking at disk utility shows a HD with no volumes that appears unformatted. Resetting PMU, PRAM, NVRAM doesn't help, however if I open the case (i.e. take off the keyboard), tweak the various cables, tighten any loose screws, blow off the dust for good luck, etc., then put it back together, the machine works like there were never any problems....for anywhere from a day to a week, when the same problems happen again.
To be fair, I give the machine a good workout and have for the past 3.5 years; daily half-hour bike rides in my laptop backpack (mostly smooth, but some bumps), every workday spent docked to my work keyboard and monitor, thus running with the case closed and an occasional paper or light folder on top of it, and about 3 years ago it took a spill and as such has a dent on the lower right where daylight can peek in. But the HD seems fine (when it's mounted) and all the various slots and ports and cards seem to work (again, when the system is actually working).
Any idea what this could be, or even how to test? Could an errant wire misplaced cause a short, or some small bit of dust be getting in the way? What problem would be fixed by unscrewing and opening up, then closing it all back up without doing much of anything, and yet be brought back by a transport home?
thanks for any advice or test recommendations. My current plan is to take my friend's old powerbook with a busted display, and swap in my display and HD, on the assumption that my logic board is somehow wonky.

Well, yes, that's logical and all, and probably right, but as a poor grad student I'm interested in wishful thinking and squeezing every last inch of functionality out of the machine while I can before I plunk down 2 months (or so) pay, folly though it may be. I can't bear to throw technology away unless it's truly dead.
Is there any component that you (or anyone out there reading this) guess might be likely to short?
And speaking of shorts, on the lower left corner of the powerbook (i.e. the corner closest to the "z" key), under the hood, near where the dent is as it turns out, is a wire covered in black insulation that appears to be connected to a little card nestled in against the lower wall of the case (the wall parallel with and closest to the space bar). The wire runs about 1/3 of the way up the left side, then abruptly stops, and i noticed the very end is not insulated, i.e. I see silver wire. As this is near the bumped part I wonder if it's moving about a bit and can cause a short...I put a piece of scotch tape over the exposed end just in case. Anybody have any idea what this is or if it could be the problem? My guess is a bluetooth antenna or some such. I've never used bluetooth on this machine so I don't know if it's faulty.
Speaking of shorts part 2, one of the times I opened the computer I noticed one of the little metallic spongy pads that run down the right side of the case, near the power button, had come loose and was out of place, so I put it back in place. It seemed pretty uncritical, though maybe I'm wrong?

  • How do I open the case of a Zen 20Gb (overgrown Micr

Creative helpfully haven't given this model a name to distiguish it. The one I mean is 20Gb and looks like an overweight Zen Micro,?How do you open the case? There is a very small Torx like screw, but what size and where do I get the tool? Is that actually the way in?Are there any tricks to ensure it's not damaged when opening?Anyone have a very dead or damaged one available for an autopsy? (I'm happy to pay)? Thanks in advance.

    Tom,
Problem solved is a good answer. Hope you are operational. If not quite, then my earlier iMac DV SE upgrade post can be found below. Parts details and a link to a color step by step upgrade guide.

The things we have heard about additional heat are true. I was concerned about unit longevity, so I went into the Brookstone store at the mall and picked up a "Variable Speed Desk Fan" for $30. It is low profile, and laying on its side, blows gobs of cool air into the back of the iMac. Noisy but effective. Will run for 2hrs and auto off.

Hi, no eMacs had G3s, only G4s. Is it maybe an iMac G3?

  • My G60 has a loose screw. How do I open the case?

My wife's G60 has a screw rattling around inside. We can't use the laptop (which she relies on for college courses) until I can get the screw, put it where it belongs and be sure we don't short out the motherboard. I tried taking the case apart, but with all the screws I can find removed the case still will not come apart. Anyone know of an exploded drawing or instruction set for opening the case?

  • Starting a MacBook Pro without opening the case

I am using a docking station and an external monitor. Can I start my MBP without opening the case to push the button?

Thanks, I have been doing this. My problem is that after some days I feel I should shut down and then it requires a start. I am currently removing the MBP from the dock and starting it. I then put it in clam shell mode and put it in the dock. It can take quite a few goes to reactivate the conncetion to the monitor and I am trying to short circuit this problem. I have not been able to find a way to do this. When I used to use PC laptops with a docking station, the keyboard and the docking station had start buttons after a shut down. I have now returned to Macs after quite a few years and this has been my only problem.

  • Macbook pro ( v 10.6.2, 2.53 GHz) iSight green light constantly on from startup (even before the grey startup screen).

The iSight green light seems to always be turned on on my macbook pro. I've tried rebooting, but the light comes one even before the grey startup screen comes up.  The camera works fine in Photobooth etc, full picture, unlike all of the other posts. I already reset PRAM, and it didn't work. The laptop was recently refurbished. Thanks! Any help would be appreciated.

    See this article.
    I don't think it's a RAM problem.  It's really a corrupted file or a damaged hard drive.

  • IMac won't boot past grey startup screen

It's a 2008 intel iMac running ML and bootcamp with Win7
It was working fine yesterday then I tried to start Aperture. It bounced on the dock but wouldn't open.
I tried a restart and it just gets to the grey startup screen with the Apple logo and spinner
I can start it from an external drive and I just tried to start from Bootcamp and it starts and runs fine
I have repaired and verified the disc and it says it is fine
Something is stopping it booting into ML
    Any ideas?
    Allan

Thanks, I already tried most of those. I followed the other suggestions ( already failed safe boot) and when it got to " take it to Apple" I just restored it from Time Machine and it all works perfectly.
It would have been nice to fugure out why it wouldnt boot, something must have been corrupted.
I dont know if its anything to do with it, but when I got the restored system booted up and downloaded all my emails, there was an email in my outbox with no recipient field filled in but a link to some iffy website in the message field.( Something like burnt gate)
    I deleted it.
    Maybe my first Mac virus?

  • I purchased creative lightroom presets. I see the zip file in my download file and I try to import to LR but it just keeps creating a bundle never giving me the option to import (greyed out). What am I doing wrong?

I purchased creative lightroom presets. I see the zip file in my download file and I try to import to LR but it just keeps creating a bundle never giving me the option to import (greyed out). What am I doing wrong?

Try unzipping the file first. I have no idea regarding your level of technical expertise so advanced apologies if this is really basic. A ZIP file is a compressed file containing one of more files within it. To access the files you will need to expand it. If you double-click on it first, it should open up for you. If it does not automatically expand, you can select the files and copy them to a new folder. The copy will unload them into an uncompressed form. Once they have been uncompressed, you should be able to import them.
If the import is still giving you problems, go to your Preferences, click on the Presets tab and click the Show Presets Folder button. You can then copy your purchased presets into the folder shown. You will want to copy them to the User Presets subfolder.

  • Stuck at grey startup screen with spinning grey wheel

Software update wanted to install a new version of airport. Clicked ok and appeared to install. Restart then yielded grey startup screen and spinning wheel and it stays stuck there. Original MacBook Pro with 2Ghz Core Duo. Any ideas?

Hi, I have an i Mac but was having the same problem last week - getting stuck at the start up screen. I had no idea what to do but started a discussion and someone suggested the repair utility and it also told me everything was fine. Then she told me to do an Archive and Install and in the end that got everything working again. I don't know much about computers so I don't know if this will work for you, too, but it might be worth a shot. Try this...
Triple click anywhere in the line below to select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it.
    cmd /k netsh winsock reset
Press the WinLogoKey+R to open the run dialog, then Ctrl+V to paste, then press enter/return.
You should get something similar to this:
Reboot the computer and the problem should be resolved.
If it doesn't work then perhaps a full tear down and rebuild of iTunes will fix things. See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for details.

    Hello there, Nina2800.
It sounds like you are having issues connecting to the iTunes Store and getting a blank page.  The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for verifying connectivity:

If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store, a software conflict or your internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking your access.
Update iTunes to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. To configure your firewall, please refer to the "Blocked by firewall" section in this article.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Click here to find out how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you are receiving a specific error message you may want to see, the "Specific Conditions and Alert Messages" section in this article as needed.
If the issue still persists, contact your internet service provider and confirm that the ports and servers in this article are enabled over your network.

  • How to get rid of the SAP BPC "three globes" startup screen?

    Hi,
I am trying to figure out how to get rid of the SAP BPC "three globes" startup screen when we start BPC. I do not want it to pop up.
I looked at VBA behind the workbooks but could not find anything. Could not make the sheet invisible.
Is there a way to get rid of the screen? This is the screenshot

Re: How to change the logo, (3 Globes) on the launch page

OK then, now v7sp03 for microsoft has hit the shelves, you can change the logo !!!
    It is quite easy.
Have the logo file ready in either BMP, GIF or JPG format.
Put it in your "Server Install -> DataWebFolders[Appset]" folder (so where you keep your files).
In ApplicationSet parameters, add the parameter COMPANY_LOGO and in the options type the name of the file you just put on the server.
Now if you restart BPC for Excel, the second excel page that pops up should be showing your new logo or graphic (mine did).
The use of the logo has been documented in the admin manual -> working with appset parameters
    Some tips.
I wanted not to clutter the filesystem so i put my logo in the appsetpublications folder and added the path accordingly in the parameter (so now it reads appsetpublicationslogoname.jpg instead of just logoname.jpg).
If you do not supply a name (only the parameter), your second Excel window (normally holding the graphic) will not appear. That could be an alternative too if you find that whole thing annoying.
Hope this helps you build great BPC apps,
    Edwin van Geel

Recently, I restarted my MAC and I'm not able to place images in AI or open AI files with images.
Sometimes when I do place a jpg, it just shows a box.
    Some errors include:
    • This file is not readable.
    • Can't open the illustration.
    • Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation.

As Monika said, we need info about the file and exact system info. Sounds like the files are damaged or locked at the operating system level, which in turn could indicate file system issues....
