I opened Firefox today (it is my default browser) and it acted like I had never used it before. ALL MY BOOKMARKS ARE GONE!

The question pretty much says it all.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Whenever I opened Firefox Start Page, all my bookmarks were displayed on the left side. I accidently hit something, and now all my bookmarks are gone.

Firefox has a Bookmarks Sidebar you can open and close using Ctrl+b. That's pretty easy to hit if you're trying to bold something, but if a website doesn't intercept it, then it affects your sidebar.
Was that it?

• If Firefox is set as the default browser, and any application attempts to open a new window, this fails and I get the error "Firefox is already running..."

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
Test Cases:
All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.

Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable.

• I use firefox 16 on windows 7 with Xmarks and now all my bookmarks are gone.

I recently began using Xmarks with Firefox 16 on a Windows 7 platform. I got some sort of an error message (I think from Xmarks) regarding "Bookmarks". I clicked on the message to fix the problem and zapp all my bookmarks were gone. I found my "bookmarksbackup" profile file. but can't get it to open. I suppose that I need a JSON viewer. I downloaded a opensource viewer that looked good, but still don't get anything that remotely resembles my old bookmarks. I thought that I might be the victim of a virus, but I'm probably just the victim of my own ignorance.

hello pianonanda65, please refer to [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]

• My computer crashed and firefox no longer recognizes me as ever having used it so my profile/bookmarks are gone, I can only find todays info in profile. Help.

Is the old profile hidden somewhere on my computer? Or is it gone forever?
I am using Vista. The computer is about to die (keeps making clicking sounds) along with losing my firefox profile, it forgot how to find all my docs and pics but I was able to recover them by doing a system wide search. Odd thing is, the computer can still locate all of my husbands information even though he also had stuff running when it crashed.

Do you still see any profile folders with a random name in this location?
* C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
%AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Windows 7+ versions are hidden folders.
Try to delete the profiles.ini file (if it is still there) to force Firefox to create a new default profile.

*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
A Firefox "reset" creates a new profile and some of your data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, form data) is automatically imported and your current profile will be moved to the desktop (Old Firefox Data), so you can check for the presence of such a folder on the desktop

• Firefox 4.0 is my default browser, and I am receiving a script error message when I try to view online images in Family Tree Maker 2011, a genealogy program. Have not had problems until Firefox 4.0. Can't seem to find a setting in Firefox to fix this.

Error is as follows: Line: 63 Char: 4344 Error: Unable to get value of the property 'offsetHeight': object is null or undefined Code: 0 URL: http://yui.yahooapis.com/combo?2.8.0/build/yuiloader-dom- event/yuiloader-dom-event.js&2.8.0/build/dragdrop/dragdrop- min.js&2.8.0/build/stylesheet/stylesheet- Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? Y/N buttons."

I see. Well, I just tried to make IE my default browser, but it did not solve the problem. I receive the same script error when I view the image. (I may not have explained this thoroughly enough at first - I do get to view the image after answering the error message, but the print button embedded in the window doesn't work. Before, I never had a problem with viewing or printing.)
I imagine that at this point I will either need to communicate this to the IE people, or possibly revert to an older version of IE.

• "Updated" Firefox and all my bookmarks are gone

I've already clicked on "show all bookmarks"-- but the library's empty. So I clicked on Import and Backup, and Restore the previous bookmarks to earlier today (and yesterday and the day before and...), and after being told this will replace the current list, I get a "unable to process backup file" dialogue box. I also can't find where it is on my C: drive (is it not saved under program files/mozilla firefox?). Where did they go, and how do I get them back? I can't lose them!!
I'm using Vista, Service Pack 2

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

• After updating (no response from Firefox) all my bookmarks are gone

I kept getting a "Firefox does not respond" message and couldn't open Firefox. I went to the help page and the said to click on the update. I then could open Firefox, but all of my bookmarks had disappeared. That was yesterday. I'm now back to "Firefox does not respond". What is happening and how can I solve the connection problem AND restore my bookmarks?
Really frustrating.

Hello,
Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.
#Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
#*Click the ''[[Display the Firefox button menu instead of the menu toolbar|Firefox button]]'' to open the menu and click on ''Bookmarks''.
#*Click the ''Bookmarks'' menu and click on ''Show All Bookmarks''.
# At the top of the Library window, click the "Import and Backup" menu and select Restore.
# Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
# In the new window that appears, click OK.
# Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.
For more information, see the [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]] article. For other solutions, see the [[Recover lost or missing Bookmarks]] article.
If that is not working... try to troubleshoot the places.sqlite file.

• I recently got my laptop updated and Firefox was deleted and now all my bookmarks are gone. Is there any way to get them back?

I had over 20.000 bookmarks and I really want them back. Please tell me theres some kind of backup system. Been using Firefox as long as I can remember and I love it!

• Firefox did an update on 5/4/2011 and now all my bookmarks are gone?

why did all my previous bookmarks disapear when i started firefox this morning it was like i never had them at all i cant even go back in the history to find them i tryed to relogin on my pc and the whole reboot thing but nothing
OMG they are gone and now i have places i can not get into cause they are gone!!!!!!!!
To bad firefox has to update like every 3 months

When did this happen?
Firefox 4 saves 10 rotating backup, one each day that you start Firefox. So you can try to restore the bookmarks from an older JSON backup. The file size can be an indication about how many bookmarks are in the file.

• Firefox has been updated, and all my bookmarks are gone, but i have them on Firefox Home on my iPhone. What will happen if I sync in Firefox on my mac?

Will my bookmarks come back to Firefox on my mac? And how can I save the bookmarks on the mac, so this dosn't happen again.

Are the bookmark backups gone from the profile? I would try restoring them first before anything else. The profile for Firefox is in the Library for the user account. The easy way to find the profile is to click "Troubleshooting Information" in the Help menu and then click the button "Show in Finder". It is possible to backup bookmarks to another directory outside the profile from the Backup and Restore button in the toolbar in the bookmarks library window. That way you have a backup set of bookmarks you can restore even if the profile goes missing.

• When I open Firefox, it goes to a blank page instead of google, like I had it set up. When I go to a bookmark, nothing. It won't load anything. HELP!

When I open FF, it used to go to google. Now, I just get a blank page with the tab that says, "New Tab". When I click on the home button (suppose to go to google), it will change to "connecting..." for half a second but remain on the blank page returning to "New Tab". It is set to not use a proxy as it should be. It is not set to work offline. I do not have a firewall preventing it from accessing the internet. IE works and I have no problems there.

hi cnlbell,
Have you tried going to the General Preferences tab and verifying that google is set as you home page? I'd suggest you try setting about:home as your home page. It's a cool FF page with a google search bar. Then tell Firefox to display your home page on startup. These options are all in the General Preferences panel. Try that and let me know how it goes!
Hopefully this helps!

• Since installing Firefox as my default browser, and removing Internet Explorer 9,which was awful, my Homepage screen is just in the middle of my screen with very small print and empty space on each side of it. Can the be fixed?

Three days ago I installed Internet Explorer 9 as my browser. When I tried to sign in to my email on my homepage I couldn't.
I contacted my service provider and they said that Explorer 9 was not compatible with them as it is in Beta form and also in test mode.
They suggested that I remove Explorer 9 and install Firefox, which I did. Then they said it was a good idea to have more than one browser at a time and to go into the Microsoft site and download Explorer 8.
I tried this and it would not let me go back to Explorer 8 only forward to 9 which I reinstalled.
After all of this my Homepage only fills up the middle of my screen and I have empty space on either side of the picture. When I browse, the site I go to opens up to full page, but the print is much smaller than before.
I don't know what I installed to make my viewing so much smaller or my homepage to shrink.
Also do I really need 2 browsers or can I just go with Firefox?
If so, how will not having Internet Explorer affect my browsing?
Firefox is set as my default browser and I am enjoying using it, I just wish I had my Homepage back to full screen!

When going to a website the picture was small - tried changing the Zoom size , tried Zoom Reset - the text did change size but the layout distorts - found under View - Zoom - Zoom Text Only was checked --- Removed this check mark and the website returned to normal size and Zoom worked normally again. I am 99.9999% sure I did NOT check this myself and there is no one else on the computer to cause it. Maybe this will help.

• I had to restore my computer to its original settings after a crash. I backed up my files before hand so I didn't lose data in memory. When I ran Firefox from it, my bookmarks are gone. How can I get them back if I can?

My computer had trouble starting for a long time. Taking it to the shop didn't help. Today it just wouldn't start at all. In a desperation move I restored it to its original settings as if I just bought it. I chose the backup files version so that I didn't lose any data in memory, though I do have to restore some settings. When I ran Firefox all my bookmarks are gone. Everything is in the My Backup folder. How can I get my bookmarks back if I can?

As always, iphone will sync with one comptuer at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.
The backup that itunes performs does not include any itunes content. You should keep everything on your computer and should always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
