I photo images have gone AWOL

I recently had a brief power outage. My Imac G5 was asleep at the time. When it rebooted, the photo library was empty. I downloaded a test version of file salvager, which found the missing files. Before purchasing this software, is there a way to reclaim the photo files and why would this happen? Do I need to repair Iphoto before attempting the file recovery? Thanks.
imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If you did a search for the folder names Originals, Modified and Data and nothing came up, then I don't know what to tell you.
Usually when someone opens their iPhoto Library and it is empty, it is usually because the data files got messed up in the old library and iPhoto can't read them to open the library. It will then create a new library when it opens. In the new library there will be no Originals, Modified or Data folders until photos are imported.
In your case, if doing a search for the Originals, Modified and Data folders comes up empty, it means either those folders got deleted somehow along with the photos in them. If the data rescue software comes up with jpeg files, the files it comes up with are files that have been deleted from the hard drive, but have not been overwritten yet. It can recover all the files that have not been overwritten.

Have just updated my phone with the latest update and all my photo's have gone to internal storage. how do i get them back in to my camera roll so i can view them on my phone.

Pictures are not designed to be kept in the Camera Roll... that is simply temporary storage for when you are taking pictures.  Try reading this and this to see if it clears it up for you.

  • All my Photo Booth images have gone - after power cut!!

OK, I was on my iMac when a power cut effected the whole street. I don't know if I had Photo Booth open at the time but now I've noticed after I logged back in that all 50+ images in my Photo Booth timeline have gone. It now says 'no images' at the bottom.
Where the **** could these have gone? Also, I was silly enough not to back any of them up...gutted

I've just looked in my Photo Booth folder where the images are kept and they are all there!! It would be nice to get these back into the 'timeline' at the botom of the PB app, does anyone know of this can be done at all?

  • And my photo's have gone too...

    Help!
Seem to have a similar issue to the last post but as a recent convert from PC I'm no mac expert and got lost in the thread. Any simple advice would be really useful...
    Using an 08 iMAC 20" / iPhoto 7.1.4
Library was set up and working fine.
Uploading images from the camera (Canon Ixus 330) and the operation timed out.
Got a [restart] message, mac restarted.
    iPhoto library is now empty.
Starting up the app displays the [no photos] message
In Finder the picture folder contains the iLibrary, the iChat icons folder and booth.
iLibrary is 3.5GB - approximately the same size as it was when the photos were showing???
There's nothing in the trash or anywhere else I've looked.
Any advice would be really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

    Have you followed TD's suggestions?
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that fails then you have a damaged database file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • ? I recently reinstalled Photoshop Elements after having printing problems my photo files have gone

I recently had problems with printing on my HP printer and discovered it was to do with PSE
After reinstalling PSE on my Mac I could now print photos again but all my photo files were lost. I have reinstalled PSE in the past but not had this problem.
    Can anyone help?

It may be that application is not opening the default catalog that was set before uninstalling the application . Please search for pse<version>db file e.g. if you are using pse10 than .pse10db file. There may be multiple files. Please look for folder name, folder name would be same as catalog name. Once the particular folder has been found go to File->catalog, click on Browse button, browse to folder location and select it open catalog.

  • HT4858 Is there anyway to get back icloud photos that have gone over the 1000 pic limit?? i have lost some very important photos

    please help

There is a little chance that your pictures are included in your last iCloud or iTunes backup, if the photos were stored in the camera roll. Otherwise they are probably gone. For the future I would suggest to start saving your photos additionally (in iPhoto etc.) on your Mac or PC or any other cloud storage like Dropbox.

I have updated to OS X mavericks and all of the data that was on my macbook is not there. I have tried changing users but there isnt another account there.
Will everything be deleted or will it be hidden somewhere? I am devasted to lose all of photos/music. Can somebody please help me out?

I'm just happy your data is still there.

  • Iphoto 8 - thumbnails have gone AWOL in event folders.

I can see all of the events and all of the albums.  When I hover over each event/album, I can see the photos.  When I double click to open an event or an album, there are no thumbnails, only a single large photo (able to scroll - but not able to see all at the same time).
    How to correct this?!?!?!

NEVER MIND - I found a way to resolve the issue.

  • Can Time Machine retrieve Keynote presentations that have gone AWOL in the cloud?

Does Time Machine store old icloud presentations? I had one and was going to back it up locally on my HD, and now it's missing from the cloud. I am hoping I can restore it somehow by locating it in Time Machine.
I know I can restore earlier versions of a file if I have the presentation to open. I don't even have that in this case.

    1)  How Time Machine Works its Magic
    2)  How do I view or restore selected items?
    3)  How do I use the (not so intuitive) Time Machine display?

  • Safari an App Store have GONE AWOL  ?

Hi over the last two months I have used up far more of my Mobile Data than I use normally, for two months running I am fast running out of Data with 2 weeks left, I get 500mb allowance and I am not a heavy user.
Tonight I panicked and switched off a lot of DATA using settings in Settings.
But now I find I havent got SAFARI or the APP STORE anymore, which are two items that cannot normally be removed from the Menu, there might be more items missing as well, but I can't think what they might be.
Does anybody know please what I have done ? and how can I get Safari etc. back again  PLEASE
    Tim

Swipe down on the home screen and type in a search for each app. If the apps somehow ended up in a folder, it will indicate which one.
Check any alternate home screens by swiping left-right
Settings app > General > Restrictions to see if Restrictions are on, and if Safari and the App Store are turned off.
Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout
Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
And for the record, 500 MB isn't much data at all if you consider video and other streaming sources, or any significant file download.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

I can see a preview of the photos, but I cannot access or edit them.  They say "the folder cannot be located" and "the photo is missing".  I have gone through multiple Adobe tutorials to try and recover them to no avail.  Any tips?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.
The solution to reconnecting the folders is given here: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

How can I move someone's hair from one photo to another and place it on another person? I have gone through every instructional video you have and have not been able to master this

Open picture B, the one you wish to select the hair from to add to the picture.
Use one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, to select the hair. You will see an outline ("marching ants") once the selection is complete
Go to Edit menu>copy to copy the hair to the clipboard
Open picture A, then go to Edit>paste
Use the move tool to position the hair from picture B.
In the layers palette you should see picture A as the background layer, and the hair (B) on a separate layer.

  • I recently added many photos to my Library.  Now, in place of some event key photos, I have "palm tree" grey images showing a date but no images

I have a large iPhoto library (about 130,000+ images).  Recently I added a whole lot from another Library, and now I have a smattering of many grey'ed out "palm tree" images, like events, only just showing drawings of palm trees.  I think the photo images are there (I hope they're not lost), but they don't show up in the "Event" format.  Even the Photostream "Events" show palm trees and blank.  Both libraries are on an external hard drive.
While the additional large number of photos were being added, there was a message, "Import completed" (I believe), but also a message that the whole computer had run out of memory and locked up.  I have 8 GB of RAM in a MacBook Pro about a year old.
I've had this problem before (with the Palm trees) but can't remember how to solve it.  Something about re-indexing the library by holding down the control, option and/or command buttons while opening..??  Maybe?  Would sure appreciate help with this.  Thanks

What format is the external drive?
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

I have just used migration assistant to import photos (using an ethernet cable) from my PC. It has worked but they have gone into a new user on my MacPro. How can I merge them into the one user account.

How many pictures (or how many bytes) are we talking?  Now that the pictures are imported one way to cross users is to use a removable drive (although large volumes of files preclude this).
The other is to login as the user where the pictures are, then copy them into the public drop box of the user where you want the picture.
The arrow is showing (in ths example) copy files from the Pictures folder for my user to the guest user accounts public dropbox.  When you do this you may have to authenticate and you won't be able to see the results of the copy until you log in as the other user.
All users are in the folder "/Users/"
