I-Photo quits
I-Photo quits unexpectedly I try to open up the app and it tries to open but then quits very quickly, and a window pops up stating it quit unexpectedly, and try to re-open. But it will not open. I tried to shut down the computer, and re start. But this does not work. I cannot find out what version I have either, because it doesn't stay open long enough for me to find out.But in the pop up window it does say I have version 9.2.3 for I-Photo Not sure what to do. I do have the latest software version for the computer itself 10.6.8. I do have an external time machine back up using a 500GB Seagate external hard drive. Any suggestions would be great. I was going to copy and paste what was in the pop up window but I am afraid I may be exposing some content that might be private.
Remember this was a test...
Back to the original library:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I photo quits everytime i click on a photo.
I photo quits after about 10-15 seconds of moving the curser over photo's or if i click on a photo, however it will remain running if i don't touch it i can still access the top bar ie. file, edit, photos events without it closing. when it closes a message pops up saying Iphoto quit unexpectedly a report will be automatically sent to apple, I then have the option of reopening it or just clicking ok. I dunno if it is relevant but my computer has been running slower than it ever has over the last 3 years even though i still have just under half the memory free (113GB free space).
thank you for taking the time to consider my problem

What is the error message, when Photos quits? There is probably a panel with a "report" button. Press this button and copy and paste the first 50 lines of the error log into your next post.
Also, try to launch Photos with a new , empty library. Hold down the alt/options key, when you launch Photos and select to create a different library. -
Photos quit unexpectedly and I then lost over 300 pictures
I was using Photos to edit pictures. The program "quit unexpectedly" (I received the error message). When I reopened the program, over 300 photos had been deleted. Where are they? Can I get them back?
I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures
Do you mean importing photos? If so what were you importing from? If it is a flash drive why not just re-import from it? Where did you scan them?
As to backups - you really need to always have your backup running - without good backups you will lose all photos sooner or later

when I click on a photo that i had edited in photoshop elements 3 then iphoto quits. What does that mean. So what do i do. I just updated to ilife 06 a week ago.
mostly the same as the above with a few added steps to speed things up. None of these are my original ideas, I just gathered them up and cobbled it all together... Issue or symptom
After updating to QuickTime 7.1.3, iPhoto may unexpectedly quit while attempting to import or edit certain photos, in particular those previously edited with Photoshop Elements 3.
Products affected
• iPhoto 6.0.5
• QuickTime 7.1.3
Solution
Apple is aware of the issue, which is caused by QuickTime 7.1.3 and that they were working on a fix. No ETA for the fix unfortunately. There are several workaround options for this issue.
A permanent work-around "fix" from Apple:
If the issue is due to editing the image from Adobe Photoshop Elements, this fix should resolve the problem moving forward:
Set Photoshop Elements as your external editor from iPhoto preferences.
Open Photoshop Elements.
Choose Color Settings from the Photoshop Elements menu.
Enable Full Color Management.
Go back to iPhoto and open the affected photo in the external editor (Photoshop Elements).
If Elements 3 presents the "Missing Profile" dialog, select either "Assign Adobe RGB (use the current Working Space)" or "Assign sRGB".
Save the image in Elements 3.
Now you should be able to view or edit the photo in iPhoto without issue.
If you have a large number of images that have been edited in Adobe Photoshop Elements, try the following fix:
Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library Folder (I just used Copy 'n' Paste from the Finder).
Shutdown any running apps.
Locate the 'Embed Chosen Profile' AppleScript in your Library\Scripts\ColorSync folder on your Mac OS X start-up disk. If you don’t have this see the Old Toad note below.
Make an alias of the above script (⌘L) and then move the alias to your desktop.
Locate the problematic photos from within your iPhoto Library's sub-folders and drag them (a folder at a time is necessary) to the 'Embed Chosen Profile' script alias on your desktop. You will have to run the 'Embed Chosen Profile' script against photos stored in both your Originals and Modified folders within your iPhoto Library Folder. You do not need to run the script against the photos in your Data folder (because the Data folder only contains thumbnail images). Unfortunately the script doesn't process folders that contain sub-folders (which is pretty much how iPhoto organizes your iPhoto Library). So you have to select the 'actual' parent folder that contains the images that you want to fix. A way to do the entire library at one time is the following:
Open the library folder and type Command-F and set the search criteria to:
Kind is Image
Size is greater than 200 KB
Name ends with .JPG (Note: this fix will not work with .TIF, .PSD, .GIF, PT Mac files, Photostitch files or others. You will need to open these in Photoshop Elements and resave them.
In the search results window select all the files and drag onto the alias file for the Embed chosen profile AppleScript. That will do all of the files at one time.
The Script should run and ask you to select a ColorSync Profile. Navigate to System\Library\ColorSync\Profiles and select the 'sRGB Profile' (this is the profile recommended by Apple). select either "Assign Adobe RGB (use the current Working Space)" or "Assign sRGB"
The script will then embed the selected sRGB ColorSync profile into each image that was contained in the folder that you dragged onto the script icon at step 5. Once all of your images are fixed, you can restart iPhoto and see if it has resolved the problem. This may take about an hour per 1000-2000 photos depending on photo sizes and speed of Mac.
It's worth rebuilding your iPhoto Library, just in case any of the crashes have caused the library database files to become corrupted. To do this, shutdown iPhoto and then restart it again whilst holding down the CMD (⌘) and OPT (⌥) keys. Then select the option to Rebuild the iPhoto Library.
Once Apple issue a proper fix (hopefully an updated version of QuickTime), you may revert to your backup iPhoto Library, but for now at least, this should get you up and running!
Additional information
This issue only appears to affect PowerPC-based models of Macintosh.

Photo quits unexpectedly while 'Preparing Library'?
Once I updated Yosemite, I opened Photos and it would prepare my library and I saw the percentage go up. I left for about an hour and when I came to check up, Photos was at 14%. 10 mins after, it was still at 14%. I forced quit (now regretting it) and decided to try again. I did this four times and Photos would quit unexpectedly. For something so new, it takes way too long. I do have 19k of photos and videos. I don't know if that's why it takes so long. My iPhoto is useless at this time because it would be Updating Thumbnails and then become unresponsive immediately. I have no idea what to do now.
Any advice would do. Thanks!I tried for over a week to get Photos working. I would wait for the next release. I am back to using iPhoto. You need 9.6.1 on Yosemite 10.10.3. If you were previously on iPhoto 9.6, then you can get the update for 9.6.1 on the app store. Under purchases, click update, wait for the download, restart, and then you should be able to use iPhoto again.

How does this problem present itself? Do you get a ! or ? when you click to edit?
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that doesn't describe your problem, post back.

Help please - unable to open missing photos 'browse' dialogue box
Hi All,
new to the forum, but long time LR user.
I have a problem with LR v.3.4.1 I have a few missing photos (quite a few actually) in my catalogue from when I moved hard drives in v1. I jumped from v.1 to v3. But used to be able to find them still.
Now when I click the ? icon the browse dialogue box won't open. Double clicking only switches from thumnail to full size - though there are no index images of these photos.
I've checked the drives, the images still exist. I tried re-iporting the images to see if that would bring them up as duplicates, but the LR finder would not see any images there.
Since switching from v.1 to v.3 I have done quite a few shoots, and I'd be sad (no mortified!) to loose either bit of editing work.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
DamianI should say, this is the case for both my Macbook Pro running v10.5.8
and my new today, iMac running v10.6.7 -
Using the new Photos app on multiple devices - confusion!
I find the recent way ios/Photos handles photos quite confusing. I am not too concerned about not having a Camera Roll, but seeing how not having this creates strange behavior when editing/deleting photos, I can see how the Camera Roll is definitely necessary or the whole thing needs revamped to handle things better.
Here's my set up:
iMac with iPhoto
iPhone 5s with the new Photos app
iPad Mini with the new Photos app
The one things I DO like is that whenever I take a photo (or upload in the case of my iMac), the photo is duplicated across all devices. That means I could take a photo on my iPhone and then edit it on my iPad Mini which has a bigger screen. (Well, so I thought..but read below.) Yes, you could do this with Photo Stream, but having all photos in one place is a bit easier to remember and find. I also like that when I delete the photo on the device that I took it on, all photos on the other two devices are also deleted. Easy. Thanks.
But that is where the ease of use ends.
If I delete the photo on any other two devices (i.e. the devices that I did NOT take the photo on), it only deletes on the devices which I didn't take the photo on. In other words, it leaves the photo on the device which I originally took the photo on.
To add to the confusion... if I edit the original photo, the edits do not get duplicated to the other devices! I see the original photo on the devices with which I did NOT take the photo but the edited one is on the original device I took it on.
Let's add even MORE confusion....if I want to edit the photo on a device it was not taken on, I then get a notice that it has to be Duplicated before I can edit it. Well, okay, I do that and then edit it. However, I now have the original showing up twice on the device it was originally taken on...the original photo and the now duplicated photo--it's the EXACT same photo since no edits get carried over from the other device.
I believe all of this is because of what happened when ios 9 combined the functions of the Camera Roll and Photo Stream together. It exhibits both behaviors but since you cannot be sure which photo was taken on which device, you have less understanding what will happen when you try to delete a photo or edit it.
Here's the key headache....What happens if I want to make sure a photo is deleted from ALL my devices and I don't remember which device I took the photo on? I will have to check every device just to be sure! I can't even open up iPhoto on my Mac and delete it from the Photo Stream album because it will remain on the original device. So, I have to check all devices and also iPhoto on my Mac for good measure in case I actually uploaded a photo there--which I do since I am scanning in old photos.
Key headache #2...you end up with duplicates of the photo if you edit the photo on any device on which it was not taken on. You also get different versions of the photo. You end up not knowing which photo was the original. To be sure to have all edited photos eventually on you iMac, you'll need to sync all devices physically to iPhoto.
Who has time to track all this?
What should happen is this...all of the photos, including their edits, should sync exactly on all devices. My Recently Added should look exactly the same across all devices and carry over any edits...now that is what I would call Continuity and Handoff! But as it stands, we don't have anything close to this...is more like Pandemonium and MixUp!
This is really a mess and way too confusing to keep track of. I can only hope this get resolved when Photos on the Mac is released.Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always. -
I deleted a photos from iphoto, later I found them in imoive, how do I move the photos back to iphoto?
Hi Canadian Beaver Tail!
You may want to try restoring the photo in iPhoto, using the instructions suggested in the following article:
iPhoto '11: Delete or restore a photo
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2398
To restore a deleted photo:
If you haven’t yet emptied the iPhoto Trash, do the following:
Select Trash in the Source list.
Select the photo you want to restore.
Choose Photos > “Restore to Photo Library.”You can also drag the item out of the Trash into an empty part of the Source list.
If you use Time Machine to back up your computer, you can recover a photo, an Event, a folder, an album, a project (such as a book, card, or calendar), or a slideshow even if you deleted it from the library and emptied it from the Trash. To restore photos, quit iPhoto, open the folder containing your iPhoto library, and then open Time Machine. To open Time Machine, click its icon in the Dock, or click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose Enter Time Machine. For more information on using Time Machine, see the topics in Help Center. In the Finder, choose Help > Help Center, and then search for “Time Machine.”
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
Cheers,

Can i choose which photos to put on iCloud?
My iCloud account is full. I would like to choose which photos, etc. are exchanged between my devices. I have a son who also puts his photos (quite a few of them) on my Mac, and I don't want them to always show up on my iPhone. I can't find any info on how to pick and choose which ones go on and which ones don't.
Thank you.Turn of automatic uploads in iPhoto by going to Preferences>Photo Stream and unchecking it. Then you can beging manually adding them to photo stream as described here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmd946962 under "From iPhoto or Aperture".

Cannot access photos on the phone - iPhone 3G 16GB
Hi there
I am no longer able to access the photos on my phone - even though I have a suspicion they still exist. Background info as follows:
I was transferring photos from my iPhone 3G recently to my WinXP PC at work, I had about 200-odd photos (quite a few of which I wanted to keep), and the phone rebooted part-way through and stopped transferring. I got about 15 of my 200 photos. From memory, the Windows transfer wizard also froze. I read up on a few threads in this forum about the phone rebooting, but they didnt seem to help (unless i didnt find the right thread).
The problem I have is this:
I can no longer access the photos on the phone. If I go into the Photos from the home screen, I get "No photos. You can take photos using the camera or load photos onto your iPhone using iTunes" - much like there are no photos.
However, i'm suspicious they still exist, because occasionally i'll come across something in my phone that still displays one. Contacts - sure, because they're in the contact file. But surely things like my background/wallpaper arent, and that still currently shows a photo that was in my photo album.
In addition, the iPhone no longer appears as a camera device on my work computer, or my home computer, so something is obviously wrong. It just doesnt pop up. It does however show in iTunes, so the connection is fine.
I'm also looking forward to upgrading to iPhone OS 3.0 on public release, but should I hold off? Is this likely to extinguish any remaining existence of my photos when it updates?
I saw suggestions (via Google) of the photos being in a differently numbered folder - 999APPLE or similar that i'd be able to access via SFTP, SSH, etc. but these all seemed to apply to Jailbroken phones, which mine isn't, and I don't intend it to be.
Please help! I may have a few family members wanting to kill me if some of those photos are gone! All suggestions greatly appreciated.Welcome to the discussions,
If you did not backup or sync your phone afterwards or have an old backup of your phone, your pictures are probably gone. And only photos taken with the phone would be part of the backup, in reduced quality, as all photos are optimized for viewing on the phone.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
On a Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
On Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
On Windows Vista: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

"Review Photos" Action not working
I have a workflow set up to get the selected folder (full of photos), get all items in that folder and any subfolders, and let me review them, then import the selected photos into iPhoto. However, when it gets to the "Review Photos" action it basically stops, not showing me the window, and just gives the spinning gear. When I checked to see if the results given to it by the previous action were photos, they were. When I tried this with only a few photos, it took it a (long) while and then it finally told me that it the action "Review Photos" encountered an error. The only thing I did that I can think of that would make this happen is that I did go into the contents of the action in Finder, although I did not mess around with it at all. If anyone knows where I could re-download this action if that was the problem, I would greatly appreciate it. If this is a known issue, does anybody know a fix? Thanks.
This sounds very similar to my problem with Automator 2.02/OS 10.5.4. I created a "cull photos" workflow a while ago which I thought was working - I select a folder, review the images in the folder, and label/rename the rejected photos (and, yes, it would be more than nice if I could deal with each of the three categories rather than only one!).
I opened the workflow tonight and it hung on the "Review Photos" - timed out. I deleted the Action and inserted another, presumably identical action, and it worked. Or so I thought. I managed to correctly rename and label several rejects among 20 photos before I quit the action.
Changing the action slightly to accept multiple files (I had ~700 to process and it was extremely slow) and pre-labeling the selected input files, I ran the workflow again. This time the review photos action on 20 photos quit after the first was accepted. I ran it again and it managed to continue after a reject, but passed nothing to the next action (reporting an error in the log - the action "...Next after Review Photos" was not supplied with the required data).
After several attempts to run it, the action started "spinning" every time and failed to complete. Ever.
Replacing it with a "new" "Review Photos" seemed to work, processing 5 selected photos, but again failing by not providing the next action with the appropriate file names.
None of the images are corrupt, I have selected small numbers of images to avoid overloads, I have saved the workflow, and I have closed and re-opened Automator. I find only this discussion topic which appears similar. What might be happening?
Are there alternatives to "Review Photos", which is a pretty poor applet anyway?
