I-pod cannot update because all the playlists selected for no longer exsist

What does this mean?? I have tons of songs on my itunes, but now I have 0 on my ipod and can't figure out how to transfer them. THis is a new problem, they used to transfer just fine...HELP

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:

Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

Cannot upload because all the playlists that are selected..

Can someone please help me!! What does it mean when i plug my ipod in.. and it says "Cannot update because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exisit..? Even though I have all my playlists on the side and everything?

If you have deleted a playlist, it will still try to update it untill you tell it not to. In iTunes, go to iTunes>Preferences and click on the iPod tab. There, you should be able to uncheck the playlist that it's trying to update.

Doing the iPod Updater took 2 1/2 hrs. It did not help.

My family has 2 ipod shuffles. After purchasing a Nano recently, I inserted the cd that came with it. Apparently the existing iTunes software was removed and reinstalled. At any rate, the library still shows all the original songs, but when the Nano is plugged in, iTunes immediately gives a prompt stating "Songs on the iPod *** cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist." The library is there, the playlists that were there are there, and I can play the songs on my cpu. Is there anything I can do besides completely uninstalling everything and starting over?

The iPod cannot be updated because one or more playlists no longer exist.
For versions of iTunes from 7 onwards, the option to "update selected playlists" is now under the "music" tab in the summary screen.

I accidently deleted the playlist selected for updating thing...

i was adding new songs to my ipod and i guess there were too many songs there so it asked me if i wanted it to choose some songs randomly...
so i chose "ok" but actually i didnt really want it to choose songs on its own so i deleted the list that was automatically created by itself and decided to delete some songs on my own...
after doin that, i tried to update it but now it says i cant do it because i deleted that list...
it says "songs on the ipod "stephanie kim" cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exists"
i turned my computer off and tried it again several times but it wont work...
and all the songs in my ipod are gone now...
is there anything i can do?

I deleted all my playlists selected for updating!!!

There is no music on my ipod and I can't figure out how to get the stuff from my library onto my ipod. I deleted all my original playlists thinking I was saving room. I know i'm an idiot. How do I get the music on there!! Help!!!

My Ipod was "off power" for so long that it "forgot" all its music. Now when I plug it in to my base computer, rather then synching it says "songs on the ipod "name" cannot be updated because all the playlists for updating no longer exist"

Cannont update because all playlists selected to update no longer exists.

When I connected to itunes today, itunes states that the songs on my ipod cannot be updated because all the playlists no longer exist. I opened up MY playlist under just my name and there is nothing there. My library is still there and all the playlists I created are still there. Mine, the one that appears when the ipod connects, is empty. So I went to edit and selected a few playlists and then itunes stated that the dick couldn't be written to or read from. I also tried different ways to get that library in my list. I don't get it! I went to apple support and discussions, and the only thing I haven't done so far is to RESTORE my ipod. It I do this won't I lose my library on itunes and all the work I'be put into it??? PLEASE HELP. This should be more user friendly!

I recently bought a 1GB iPod Nano from a dude on craigslist and I updated it once, but when I try to update it now a message comes up that reads:
"Songs on iPod 'jerm' cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist."
Also, when I updated it yesterday, it said that the iPod didn't have room for all of the songs on my iTunes...but I only have like 75 regular-length songs on there and the 1GB is supposed to hold 240. Anyone know what's up with that?
After it informed me of this last thing, it made me a playlist of a "selection" of songs from the iTunes and updated it with those.
I deleted that playlist today...may that be related to my first question?
All of this doesn't make sense. Can anyone shed a little light on the subject?

I had this problem with my 4GB iPod nano and I tried everything that you said to try. I did accidentally delete the iPod Selection playlist and I tried to make a new smart playlist. When I did this I got an error message that said "The smart playlist contains one or more conditions which are empty of conflict with one another. This will result in never matching any item. Are you sure you want to save this playlist?" I tried to upload an old library onto my iTunes and it was successful, however, my iPod would still not sync. Do you know what i can do to fix this?

If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".
