I-Pod Hard drive loud and doesn't work

I've had my ipod for about a year now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. However, last week it decided to stop working all together. When I turn it on the apple symbol comes up and the hard drive gets real loud and hot, nothing else. After a few minutes it either shuts off or runs till the battery dies. Finally, when I connect it to my PC nothing happens. It's not even recognized as being there. The only thing I can do is reset it, even after talking to tech support and trying to run through the diagnostic buttons, nothing happens. I can't seem to find any of this in the forums.

I have exactly the same problem since 2 days: My iPod 4G (40 GB) died. More specificly, the harddrive is out of order. I formated it, updated via the iPod update application, but it still has severe problems and they become worse. For example, I can hear the iPod trying to start several times until it is up and running (sometimes it never makes it). Or, when I copy songs on it it suddenly freezes. Or, when I try to play a song, it is not able to open it. As I said, it's dead or at least dying.
It is out of warrenty, however, I got this iPod as a replacement for a previous one during it's warrenty in summer 2005. I guess it only can be solved with a new harddrive (or a new iPod ).
Any experience with Apple's policy in such cases? The harddrive should not be dead after a few months.
Is there a (free) diagnostic tool available to find the exact reason?

  • External hard drive disappeared and doesn't mount

    Hi all,
we're using a MacMini Server at work. As backup we use an external drive and Time Machine. It has been working nicely so far. However, two days ago the external drive just disappeared. It neither shows up on the desktop nor in finder or - and that's really strange - in Disk Utility. We tried all USB ports on the Mac - nothing. We connected the hard disk to four Windows computer and it worked fine (we couldn't access it as it's a different file system but it recognized a hard drive being connected).
Other USB devices work fine on the Mac. Keyboard, mouse, no problem. Just the hard disk and, that's also strange, all other USB storages also don't work. We have a USB card reader for SD cards. The card reader seems to work (the light is on), but the SD card isn't recognized. We also tried two memory sticks in all slots - they don't show up. Neither in disk utility nor in the finder.
Has anyone of you came across this issue?

had a similar problem with a SanDisk multi card reader,.. no idea why, just flakey.
    - also check the CAPACITY of your cards, some card readers can only READ a card to a maximum of 'X' eg 8GB card, thus if you put eg a 16GB card in, they crash out..

  • My Hard drive crashed and doesn't appear on installation DVD

I was working on my Mac and accidently opened Preferences. I then clicked on the mouse/keyboard settings. I got the spinning color wheel for a while. I couldn't force quit or anything. I restarted my computer. I got the flashing folder/question mark. So I put in the 10.4 installation DVD and was going to do a disk utility on it. When it prompted to select a HD to install on, nothing showed up. I have two 150G hard drives. Earlier I was having problems with it and I was able to partition from one to two HDs. Everything was working for 4-5 months just fine until this happened. What do I do to get the Hard Drive to show up or do I need a new HD? Thanks for all your help.
    Greg

When you get sounds like that, it usually means that a HD is failing.
Partitioning means that you divide the HD space into two or more partitions. For example, on a 150GB HD, you divide it into a 100GB partition and a 50GB partition. I don't understand what you mean by "when I got it, they were partitioned together".
Do both HDs have a bootable system (10.4.x) on them? Several things to try if both have a bootable system.
Depress the Option key at startup. This will activate the Startup Manager & a window will appear with bootable HD icons. You can click on an icon & then click on the right arrow.
You can disconnect the ribbon cable from one HD & then try booting. If you get the blinking ?, then power down. Reconnect that HD's ribbon cable, & then disconnect the other HD's cable & then try booting.

  • Deleted Items from Hard Drive folder and now nothing works ...

    Hi All,
Under the 'Search For' heading in the right hand column of the grey box that comes up when you open your hard drive, there are the heading All Images, All Movies, All Docs .... I've deleted about 2600 files from the 'All Images' folder and now my iPhoto won't open as there is nothing in it, and my Entourage crashes when I try to open it.
I've obviously deleted files that were needed for these applications. The items are all still in my Trash, but I don't know how to return the files to their original homes. Can anyone help please?
    Thank you

V.K. - thank you for your help. I've manually moved all my photos back to iPhoto and that's back up and running.
The problem I'm left with is how to reinstate the correct files to Entourage. Even if I could identify which files are part of that application (can anyone help with that?), I'm still not sure how to put them back into Entourage. Is it simply a matter of dragging them over to my Entourage icon?

  • I just had the seagate hard drive replaced and the fan is running loud

I just had the seagate hard drive replaced and the fan is running loud

Is your iMac a late 2009 or newer model? Did Apple do the replacement or someone else? There is a documented issue where Apple changed the hard drive heat sensor from outside the drive to inside. If you install a replacement hard drive in a late 2009 or newer iMac that's not an Apple-sourced drive, two things happen ... the fan runs like crazy and the Apple hardware test doesn't work properly.
You can read these OWCS blogs here and here on it.

  • Can anyone help me to transfer everything I have on my Ipad on to a new computer.  my hard drive crashed and a new one was installed and I do not want to loose all my apps or music.  Please help

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for help and maybe someone can help me please.  My hard drive crashed and dell installed a new one.  I have two iphones and an ipad with all my apps, music, amd photos.  Can anyone indicate me what to do so I do not lose everything when I plug in my phone.  Thanks

Naturally you should have a recent backup of your "crashed" hard drive. If you don't, well, hopefully you've learned a lesson but that doesn't solve your current problem.
If all your apps and media were purchased from the iTunes App Store, don't worry about them. Redownload all your apps and media, then allow iTunes to sync with and wipe your iOS devices - which will also put all the apps and media on them. You'll lose your settings, and any data which resided only on the iOS devices, and of course you'll need to organize your iOS folders and home screens and whatnot. But you won't really lose much, and without a backup this is your best choice.
If you have media from sources other than the iTunes App Store, look at Senuti or similar applications designed to copy media from iOS devices to computers. Use that first, then sync as I described in my second paragraph above. (I mention Senuti because it's popular. There are other options which work just as well, and some are even free.)

  • How do I transfew all of my music from my iPod to my iTunes? I had to wipe my computer because my hard drive crashed and it will only let me sync my iTunes to iPod.

My hard drive crashed and I had to wipe my computer. When I plug my iPod into my computer, it asks if I want to sync my (empty) iTunes account to my (full) iPod, but doesn't give me the option to put my iPod music onto my empty iTunes account. All I want to do is put my iPod's music back into my iTunes account, but can't figure out how to do it. I had some music backed up, but when I put it into iTunes, it won't play the songs (has an ! next to it) even though I purchased the songs from iTunes. I've tried authorizing my account, but nothing brings my old account back. Any help would be appreciated.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • Trying to restore my Mac OS  after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

I am trying to restore my Mac OS after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combinationcommand-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • How to back up to external hard drive? and DVD?

I am having a terrible time trying to back up my iPhoto Library. About 1,000 photos, using about 1.6 GB of space. I want to back up to both DVD-R (4.7GB,16x speed).
When I go to iPhoto Help, it tells me I "can back up to DVD and/or external hard drive," but it doesn't tell me how.
I've tried going to the DVD by "Selecting All" in iPhoto, and then dragging to the DVD icon. Nothing really happens when I do that to show me copying progress, or something like that. When I do double-click the DVD, it shows icons taking up no memory. It also did not pick up all the photos, about a half dozen short. When I tried to "Burn," it failed. (I do have the combo-drive capable of burning DVDs.
Haven't tried to go to the external hard drive yet. What would be the correct process there?
What I need, I think, is the step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, those blank icons that showed up on the DVD prior to my burn attempt seemed to indicate JPEG format. Is that the format I want? Is that the default in iPhoto?

The best way to back up is to use a utility such as DejaVu or any of the many, many alternatives that you can find on MacUpdate.
Essentially, to back up iPhoto you make a copy of the Library on the external Disk.
The most basic way to do this is to drag the Library from the Pictures Folder to the External.
You can back up to DVD in two ways: The Share -> Burn command will create a disk that is readable in iPhoto. Or you can simply drag the Library from the Pictures Folder to the DVD and burn it using the Finder.

  • Hard drive death and invisibility

the other day, my hard drive seemed to die. i made a silly mistake - i had accidently gotten myself down to about 5gb free on my macbook pro's internal drive, and had then forgotten and started downloading more things. i guess i was downloading for a little while, then i shut down my computer, left the house, and got on a train. on the train, i plugged in my charger and started playing around on ableton live (resource-intensive program). everything was running fine for about 20 minutes (and nothing more was downloading at this point), but then my computer began to freeze. i thought it was just the program, as it can be a little buggy at times, but then then the whole os locked up and i had to do a force-shutdown.
then my woes began. i turned the laptop back on - and got the flashing folder with the question-mark. around this time i remember how full my hard drive was, and i get a bit concerned. i try a few things to get it to boot, but no joy. i resign myself to a train ride with no laptop. when i get home, i boot from the install dvd, open disc utility, and it shows only my dvd drive. hard drive invisible. as though has just vanished. so i assume it's a dead drive. i plug in an external through usb, and install the os onto this. computer boots fine, though a little slow (to be expected, usb). my internal drive still doesn't show. i try diskwarrior, and that it doesn't show there either. so by now i've resigned myself to an unsalvagable (within my price limits) drive. so today, i went and bought a replacement drive and a set of screwdrivers. i had to buy a slightly higher-end drive, as it was the only one they had in stock - a western digital 'scorpio black'. i get home and open the laptop's guts and install the replacement, then boot from the dvd. disc utility doesn't show it. i open the guts again and check that i installed it okay, and i'm pretty sure i did. i've opened it again about 4 times since, to check again and again. it always seems fine. when i do system profiler (from the boot disc or os on the external) i get the "there was an error while scanning for serial-ata devices".
then there's the problem that i'm really broke, after buying the replacement drive, so i can't buy an external enclosure to test that the drive(s) work, to see whether it's a drive issue or a laptop issue. could i plug them directly into the desktop (that i write this from), to test them? or would i need adaptors..? i know that my desktop (windows) case wouldn't support 2.5" drives, but if i secured it in place by other means, would the connectors work? as a troubleshooting thing.
any ideas? my guess at the moment, it must be either:
    - the overloaded drive did something bad to my hardware (the bit that controls the hard drives?).
    - a powersuge on the train did something nasty (maybe?)
    - my first drive is dead, and the replacement drive isn't appearing for a different reason (it's a 3gb/s drive, i read that there was a firmware upgrade required to get these running - but i downloaded the update on the external os, and it said the update wasn't required).
    - everything is toast. and i have to use windows.
it seems relevant that everything works fine when running the os through usb. it's just that internal drives don't appear or work. and it's also relevant that i can't send it away to get repaired, 'cause i have no money.
after all this, i got stressed and drank beer. so please excuse any silly errors and my extensive storytelling. and thank you so much in advance.

    miinna,
Did you ever figure out the problem?
I am working on a friends mac and it has the same exact issue. For some reason my Lion hard drive boots as ab internal, but any blank or snow leopard drive won't even show up in the disk utilitiy. I can install/read from an external drive. I get the same "there was an error while scanning for serial-ata devices" error.
I'm wondering if it is the SATA cable or something worse.

  • HT1420 I have a number of devices linked to a single iTunes account. Of these devices, two of the originals were computers whose hard drives failed and I was unable to die authorise them before the failure occurred. Is there a way of deauthorising them on

I have a number of devices linked to a single iTunes account. Of these devices, one was a laptop whose hard drive failed, and one was an iPad which died. My question is if it is possible to remotely deauthorise these devices or is it necessary to deauthorise all devices on the account and then reauthorise those devices which are still current.
    Thanks
    Tan Anu

iPads don't count in the number of authorisations, only computers count. Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but if you have 2 or more computers authorised then you can 'deauthorise all' (which you can only do once every 12 months) and you can then reauthorise the computers that you still have and need (deauthorising a computer doesn't remove any content from it).

  • Macbook Pro hard drive beeping and won't start up

    Hi
Last night my 13" mac book pro started beeping. I turned it off and restarted it, the beeping continued on restart and only showed a blank grey screen.
I took the cover off and realised the beeping is coming from the hard drive. It doesn't seem to be a RAM issue, I reset the PRAM and took out and replaced the RAM and it still continued.
Any idea what it could be?
    Thanks

Boot OS X Recovery, or your original System Install DVD if your Mac shipped with one, and run Disk Utility.
Most likely your hard disk drive has failed. It may or may not be repairable enough to recover its data, but it almost certainly needs to be replaced.

  • JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP

Is there anyone out there using a JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP. Would like to hear what you have to say about file types, conversion, etc. Was hoping for a quicker download, but converting is taking about as much time as download tape. Any suggestions?

I "might" be able to help.
I, too have a JVC hard drive camera. Not the same model as you, and not HD, but still the same idea. One big difference between our cameras is that your camera creates a "TOD" file, and mine creates an "MOD" file. The difference between the two may void my advice, but I doubt it.
I had similar problems converting to a file useable by FCP. I finally called JVC, and they told me to get "Capty MPEG Edit EX". I dropped the fifty bucks and it works great. A little slow, but it works. I still think it's better than capturing tape.
I HAVE learned though that buying a hard drive camera was somewhat of a mistake. By compressing the video to be saved on the drive, we've already lost something. My needs don't require super high quality 3 CCD video, so it really doesn't matter that much for me. I don't know about your needs.
Secondly, I've downloaded a free program called MPEG Streamclip. It works great. It's a little quicker than Capty and it was free. Also, I took one of my MOD files and changed it to TOD, and it opened just fine. Also, when exporting with MPEG Streamclip, if you choose "Export To Quicktime", use the default "Apple Motion JPEG A" setting and choose "unscaled" for your video and 100% quality on your sound, there is no need to render in FCP. BIG time saver for me. Now, somebody that knows way more about this than I do could probably flame me and say I'm "converting crap to crappier" or something, but it looks pretty good to me, and it works for what I'm doing.

What exactly does this mean? Your iMac doesn't authorize anything. Are you getting an error message or what message are you getting with regard to authorizing? The iPad is not authorized? What?
    No do not restore yet.

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If neither helped, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utillity. The startup disk may need repairing.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
    Make sure it says: Verified
